I've Requested That This Stove Be Removed From the Market - FireMaple Maverick Wood Stove Review

What I have today for a review is a wood stove from a company known as FireMaple. I’ll cut to the chase, this is one of the worse products that I have seen ever!
I’ve reviewed a lot of wood stoves over the years and this one here is unlike anything I have seen before - in a bad way!
Very little about this stove make sense and without a doubt it should be avoided at all costs.
The design is terrible, it has some major problems and it is exceptionally dangerous.
The Maverick needs to be removed from the Market!

I have read in the comments on the FireMaple website that this stove is compatible with the Z1 propane adapter and according to those reviews the stove works without any issues on that fuel. The web site says nothing about this capability and the instructions specifically state not to use any fuel other than butane/propane mixture.

You mentioned contacting the company and asking them to take the stove off the market. Have you considered contacting the Consumer Products Safety Commission and documenting your concerns for them? They might be able to either put additional pressure on the company, or force them to pull it and issue a recall.

Thank You for sharing the dangers of this product. Over the years I have seen many careless people leave campfires burning when they break camp, or just leave them burning unattended for hours while they are away. This stove has the ability to be disasterous especially when used by people who regularly practice carelessness.

Even if it was meant for smaller fires.. you’d be burning through the tiniest of twigs just almost instantly and the coals would fall out of the feeding ports. In order to build a bed of coals hot enough to cook on (which is what people are saying the intended use is) you’d need to build a larger fire and let it burn down. Twigs burn out in less than a minute sometimes. I think some people have just never experienced building actual fires or trying to cook on one

Last I heard fraud was illegal. But often not prosecuted. For a product from an overseas seller the prosecution can become very difficult, and legal action effectively limited to against import of the item.

Let me start by saying that I agree, Firemaple should recall this immediately. That said, you blaming the company for the reviews is hard to justify. If the company is tendering those reviews or making them up, then that's one thing, but me saying, "XYZ product" is good or bad has nothing to do with the company. I have lots of FM gear and so far, it's all good. Let's see how they respond before we start calling them disgraceful. They aren't responsible for people's reviews.

Um no... you are not supposed to feed this from the top. You are supposed to put the grate on top and use the ports so they stay blocked with the unburnt sticks hanging out. As the sticks burn you feed them in. This is how side feeeding stick stoves work. This stove is not meant for a huge fire loaded from the top. Despite it's looks, it is not meant to be used as a fire pit.

I have a folding stove with perfectly vertical walls. Embers still occasionally fall out of the feeding port. Just because you use one of these doesn't stop it from potentially starting a fire. You still have to use the exact same fire safety principles as if you were going to build a fire directly on the ground.

No doubt it is poorly designed. But even with a simple fire ring of stones, the ground should be cleared of any combustables for a minium of 3 feet around your fire. I was taught that in the 1970's in the Boy Scouts ! Yeah, the stove sucks but if you follow the 3 foot rule down to bare dirt, it shouldn't start any unintentional ground fire.

Most people out there that are weekenders will not be the ones to take responsibility for the use of this like that. 9/10ths of the Hikers I have watched on the AT thru-hikers here on the tube well, there are only 2 or 3 that actually scrape away the leaf matter and other stuff when using their stoves, MSR or otherwise. I am surprised that more forest fires have not been blamed on hikers. Look at how many do not even drown their fires. People find the firepits from the last group still smoldering when they get there late in the day. Many people are still really stupid about their fires and how they use them. Even Dixie from Homemade Wanderlust does not clear her space with her little stove, just sticks it in the leaves. Said something to her and no answer, duh.

You're right, but at the same time, anyone making a wood stove should be constructing a stove that minimizes the risks of fire regardless. There is no reason for a stove to be designed like this.

Besides what you stated, we teach the Scouts today to not make a campfire unless it's in an existing fire ring. Not only for safety, but to avoid creating a new dead spot on the ground and leaving a mess behind. Imagine if every hiker through built a new campfire, we'd have dead fire rings all around and most of the nearby brush would have been stripped. Some would undoubtedly start cutting green wood thinking it would burn.

Also... if you use the feeding ports correctly, the stciks you are slowly feeding it will block 99% of the ashes and flames from coming out of them. Don't complain about the ports and then build a fire that is obviously too big for the stove on top of it. The wosrt thing firemaple did here imho is the advertising photo that insinuated that that much wood should just be plopped in the top and lit up without using the feeding ports as they should be.

I have to admit I am not a genius, and I'm definitely not an expert in the camping field, but even I would have looked at that and thought well how do you keep the guts in of the fire? The whole point of the stove to begin with is to keep the guts in one place contained and not dangerous. There's a simple-minded thought from a person who's not an expert in the field. Lol! Fire Maple used to be fairly decent, but they have really gone downhill lately, right into the negative numbers. The last stove I bought from them was their Lava Multi-fuel stove. It struggled to start on kerosene, even with preheating the hot bulb with a gas torch. It ran poorly on gas as well, flickering and coughing out for no reason. The last time I tried to run it on kerosene (in case I had missed something) the fuel line failed, turning into a flamethrower that could have been deadly. I was very glad I was outside with nothing flammable nearby and with a fire extinguisher at the ready. If I'd been inside or in a tent, I may have been seriously wounded or even killed. Needless to say, that stove was destroyed with a sledgehammer so it could never be used by anyone ever again and went into the bin. It was not worth it. *I will never buy from them again.*

Looks like this stove is made for use in an existing fire ring where the ground where you'd normally build a campfire anyway. Basically a grill for your campfire.

The point I lost a lot of trust in amazon listings was many rechargeable batteries with listed capacity 3 times what I knew to be state of the art. A lot of products on that site are from 3rd party sellers, amazon just serving as a front end with no oversight on the actual seller or product.

Hey Luke,,,, I own this wood stove,,,, I knew from the beginning that I would need to add a little modification to it. I purchased a grill plate for cooking/ charring vegetables;. It has holes in it. I made a pattern of the 2 open feed ports and cut 2 triangle pieces (with 2 top tabs that fold over to hold it on. I place them on the inside of the stove and made them slightly larger than the feed ports. I also use a small round pizza pan (about 8”)as a ash pan to protect the ground. The additional plates I made to keep the feed ports safe are working well. I add wood from the top. Any warping has been minimal,,, So for me, things have worked out,,, Joshua

These days it seems the bigger a company gets, the less attention is devoted to actual product development. And this is an excellent example. If FireMaple indeed tested this stove (in real life, with real fire), how could it ever have moved on to the production phase? Perhaps they skipped the proofing process between their concept and production phases. Whatever the case, that’s one reason I am a huge fan of FireBox products. True, I can’t always afford them. But the company is transparent to the point where they video their own product testing, whether good or bad. And as such, they excel in perfecting their designs so that the end result is quality, well thought out products that do exactly what they’re intended to do.

Thanks Luke. All very valid issued. Without the feeding ports and with larger tabs on the ash plate, and some legs to get it off the ground, it might be good. As open as the top is, fuel could be fed from the top but with those holes in the sides, nope. In this part of the state there are layers of peat due to pine forests. Peat can and does burn underground for a long ways. Since there are no rocks here, putting it on rocks is a no go. I fully agree. Bad design. Firebox stove is versatile and made well

Just bite the bullet and invest in a Firebox. Had mine for more than 3 years and never had a problem. The 5” stove doubles as a safe campfire pit also.

Get a firebox and be done with it. Miles above the rest. No seperate peices. Just folds out. I had mine for about 6 years now. Whipe it down with some veggie oil after use. Be warned though... stuff can fall out of the loading ports on a firebox too. In fact.. all stoves like this will spew out some embers from loading ports that aren't currently being fed stciks. Firebox suggests using a piece of carbon felt under the stove. It works very very well to catch embers without igniting. You could probably use carbon felt under this firemaple stove too... but the firebox is going to be much easier to set up and probably getting a fire going because it has good draft from the bottom even with the ports blocked with sticks you are feeding it. The most important thing: Do not leave any stoves like this unattended!

In the conditions where this stove is dangerous, I would also consider most other wood burning stoves dangerous. I would use them if I also would feel safe to make a campfire. My home made rocket stove feels pretty safe to use though.

None of these stoves are really dangerous unless you build a fire that is too big for it (as in this video) or leave it unattended. There is nothing here that is going to "suddenly catch fire and burn things down" that a little water or the heal of a boot couldn't head off at the pass if you keep yer eyes on it. Most of the danger here is from ignorance.

Be careful Luke, I have seen other YT'ers get into legal troubles with manufacturers over product reviews. Seems more common lately. I have no affiliation with this product... just something for you to think about as a content creator. Good luck though!! The outdoor enthusiast community appreciates honest reviews. I dont use wood burning stoves. I prefer propane gas canister stoves.... MSR/jet boil and the likes for backpacking.

Stick stoves rule. You can boil water in minutes with just a handfull of sticks. Burning with a small flame roughly the diameter of a quarter in a firebox nano. You could probably do it with this stove too. It becomes dangerous when you try to use it like it is being used in this video.

This is why, even though the Solo Stove is way overpriced for what it is, I like that it contains the ash and embers and you don't have to worry as much about anything causing a fire. Unlike the cheaper versions I've seen that only have a small round dish/plate that still leaves a chance for embers to hit the ground/earth. I'm just waiting for it to go on sale.

I have the smallest solo for hiking, love it. Can do wood, alcohol with an evernew or trangia or even esbit. And yes its self contained solid and safe as. I have the campfire for camping and the Bonfire for home. Extremely efficient wood burner and smoke free.

I have several Fire Maple canister stoves and they are decent, not up to MSR or Soto standards, but not bad. This stove is unacceptable especially in California with our forest fire issues and I urge the state to ban its use here.

You always have to be skeptical about Amazon reviews. I've read reviews that were not even commenting on the correct item. I was debating on getting a cheap China make camp stove/pit. Earlier this year you reviewed a similar store called the SkyMac, which also had such a hot underside, that you packed some folded aluminum foil to protect whatever surface it was being used on. This is not a different version that you have reviewed in this video is it? And, if not does it have similar liabilities? Thanks for your always great work!

I found the same issues on a test at home. I use mine as a holder for sterno type canisters. Place pots on top and cook that way but only at home.

One question, can the stove be put together backwards to put the bends inward? And 2 is this product marketed as a fire pit such as the solo stove, or a small fire grill? Some products aren't designed to be a fire pit, just a small fire stove/grill. From the looks of the video, there was just to big a fire for the product.

I saw another video you did that included this stove and your intent to ask this to be removed. I commented then and you did not respond. I think my comment was that people who buy these stoves (and there are a lot of them that burn wood) should be smart enough not to put them where the embers can cause other fuel around the camp to catch fire. The burn box is big enough that if there is a hot enough fire, the metal will warp. The only cure for this is to use heavier gauge steel and a smaller box to limit the size of the fuel (twigs). designing it so that it has legs to lift off the ground might be a better idea too. Thanks for your great product reviews, they have helped me to make decisions about gear that I have purchased.

I recently purchased this a few weeks ago before seeing this video and I couldn't agree more . I used this one time and refused to use it again due to safety. This seriously needs to be taken off the market. I requested a refund for the product. Still waiting for that to happen

Me and some friends accidentally started a root fire with one of those heavy duty steel fire rings you typically find with designated campsites at state parks, etc. Luckily my buddy caught it in time and acted accordingly. I will admit to our own wrongdoing with not paying attention and overloading the ring and letting firewood/coals spill over. I’d also put some blame on the state park for building a new campsite in an area where the top soil was a mix of peat material and old leaf dander with roots exposed, and I’d be amazed if we were the only ones to have this issue. That all being said, this wood stove would look to be a prime, if not GUARANTEED, culprit of a root fire since it’s design basically allows hot coals to fall on the ground.

Luke, how about clearing the ground around the stove before you light it off? Or maybe clear the ground and make a fire pit and start an old school campfire. You seem overly agitated with the stove when you have a simple solution at your disposal.

Thank you for this video. I agree, this stove should be pulled from the market and, better yet, recalled. It is simply amazing that such a dangerous design made it to market. There must have been no testing. I can tell you, based on events I observed first-hand, that just a little wind can spread embers and ignite fires downwind in the blink of an eye. That is why it is recommended that combustible materials be removed from within a six-foot radius of any fire. Personally, I use an isobutane or propane stove, with an Esbit for backup. Light a fire? Only in the most extreme circumstances.

Spend the money and buy the small Otzi wood/briquet grill. I'm used the medium one many times and had zero issues.

Good review. It looks like it would be safer to operate upside down if not for it wouldn't have an ash plate at all. It's design looks like it would also be easy to top over causing the whole thing to collapse.

Ive seen a lot of 5 star revies of products that boiled down to ' havent used it but it was delivered quickly/looks good. I.e. things that really don't matter. Its also possible that those reviews are from wetter/ colder environments where the drawbacks may not be as obvious. And final possibility is the reviews were paid for. So im glad weve got luke who has sense and credibility when it comes to his reviews.

I have the smallest of the Winnerwell Foldflat fire pits and find it to be excellent. Very well constructed from thick stainless steel, really easy to use and clean and hasn't warped at all in the half a dozen or so times I've used it so far. Not cheap but worth the money for sure.

Yes I have the larger one and also got the internal plate to suit, no complaints from me after probably 20-30 uses. Good quality materials and nothings warped, agree not cheap but will hopefully last a lifetime

My first thought when I saw that stove was that it was upside down, and given there are slots an ash plate might fit in the top, maybe that's how it was originally designed but something when horribly wrong on the way to mass production. If I had to use it, I'd flip it over. The ground would get burned either way. At least then burning wood falling outward wouldn't be a problem.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw you use this stove system on a prior tarp adventure, Luke. I saw the coals and embers falling out from those sloped walled feeding ports and thought, Why did they design it this way ??? All they would have to do is either make the feeding ports as indents at the top of the walls, or add a flange to the bottom section of the feed ports in their current position. Either way they have to make changes to their product soon to hopefully prevent anyone unaware of the danger of this stove from causing a wild/house fire.

I believe the feedports are properly angled for correct usage. You should lay the sticks so that they are in the center of the fire, but still sticking out the port (this will block embers from coming out). As they burn, you feed them in. This is pretty much the angle you want them at. If you don't want to use feedports and want to use this stick stove as a fire pit (as shown here), then you can use some steel mesh over the ports from the inside. However, I don't believe using this as a firepit is a good idea. Really, you should clear any debris from arround any stick stove you use and consider bringing something to catch the embers (this is not a problem unique to this particular stick stove). You should not load this thing up to where the fire exceeds the diameter of the ash plate... let alone have so much wood in it that you can't get the grate on... or leave it buring unattended. No different tha any other stove. The danger in this video came from the improper and careless use.

I seem to remember that the same company had a similar challenge with a titanium stove. It was so thin that it buckled during use and it was ultimately dropped from the line up of products.

Thicker stainless plate,perforated side plates attached to let in air but no burning debris out of the stove and some legs to raise it off the ground to keep the stove running cooler.Interesting know one in production caught that.

Luke, are you able to reverse the panels meaning changing/flipping them so the concave are now convex-ed, thereby holding (again) the ash pan in place? I do realize that does nothing to help your other concerns for burning debris falling out of the ports. As always.... thank you for your honest reviews. It will be nice to hear what FireMaple does regarding these concerns!!!

Wow! That is a shocker, yet FireMaple does put out some really nice products. Looks like that one got past the common sense dept. One point that you made I find so very true with a great deal of products from many companies...Totally BS, probably purchased reviews of items. Like 300 glowing reviews that come out 1 day after the product is made available at an online platform. I get a kick out of reading some of them.
