Just a little tip, when you're putting a grip on don't cover the hole in the end so air escapes and the grip goes on much easier.

Even if you never make it to the open or past regional qualifying Pete, this series is the one of my favourite. It ticks all the boxes of being fun, informative and realistic. Can’t praise enough the transparency you give that it’s hard to be successful in golf in terms of competition

I switched to these and my game improved dramatically. More importantly, my arthritic hands do not hurt and I can play 4 rounds a week and practice at home. I have broken all my fingers multiple times and have a hard time gripping grips that are "my size." I ignored the experts and put these on. No regrets and no going back!

Hi Kevin, Just out of curiosity what were the experts saying would be the negative impact of changing your grip sizes? I’ve only recently returned to playing golf after a good 12 year break and find in the mornings after playing or practicing my hands and fingers are really stiff and sore which need to be cracked/ popped for relief.. lessons I have received from local Pro has changed my grip and fixed a lot of issues but I have been wondering for a few weeks if chunkier grips would ease the pain in the mornings? Appreciate your views? Thanks Breffini

@@breffiniodonovan5547 The argument is that your grip will include more of your palms and will be less in you fingers. You will also not close the face as quickly. For me, as an old baseball and hockey player, the finger grip was never comfortable to me, using more of my hand is just fine. As a righty with a typical left side miss and no slice, not getting to square as quickly is not a problem. I use a baseball type 10 finger grip and have not lost any power. I am 63 and get 260 in the air with my driver, and have a club head speed of 105.

OK, let me share my experience with these grips. First let me say that I am 66 years old as of this timestamp and have a mild case of arthritis in one of my fingers that causes my hand to throb after 9 or 13 holes of golf, even with the midsize grips I was using. I switched out my driver with one of these and it was like a new world of golfing for me. I didn’t notice any extra yardage with the driver but I was hitting a lot more fairways and my hand was feeling GREAT after 18 holes of play! I decided to purchase enough grips to replace the grips on all of my irons. After I gripped ALL of my irons at the same time (which was a mistake), I took them to the driving range to prove them. OH MY! I thought I was going to cry!!! I could NOT hit the ball with these grip as I could with my driver. I was topping the ball, hitting dribbles to the left and right and only getting about 50 yards with ANY IRON - it was butt ugly. Because these grips are rather expensive, I decided that I will just have to figure out how to make the adjustment and quickly because I had an LV golf trip coming up with my Pastor and a few of the fellas (I was really sweating here). Without going into many details, I ultimately made two adjustment that was tantamount to me striking the ball and getting a straight high flight. First, to an earlier commenter “YES” you can use a strong grip which is what I had to do and secondly, (NOW THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT) “DO NOT HOLD THIS GRIP TIGHT” “SERIOUSLY” Just hold it firm enough so that it won’t spin or fly out of your hand. Let me stay here for a moment because this was the “KEY” for me and may be for you as well. The wide grip is going to take up some serious space in your palm so there will be no reason to squeeze or hold the grip firmly (as it were); the iron is not going to leave your hands. I use the interlocking grip and experiment with the baseball grip which DID NOT WORK and was not necessary for me to change the interlocking grip completely. What I had to do was just lay my finger in the interlocking position if I could or just on top of that space between the fingers with a STRONG GRIP. I just swung the irons easy and freeing using my normal setup mechanics and I was/am back in business; just like my driver, the ball flight with my irons and these grips are pretty straight. If you play in a golf league or have a golf trip planned, I WOULD NOT recommend changing ALL of your irons at the same time. Actually if I had to do it again, I would suggest waiting toward the end of the golf season to do them all or just do one iron that gets good use but not your “GoTo” iron. BONUS TIP: When you regrip your irons, have the pro shop (or you do it) ensure that the “U’ or “V” on the grip is placed on the shaft so that it helps you to place your thumb in the right spot for a weak or STRONG grip. I can EASILY see this becoming a standard grip model for ALL ages because it just feels so natural and give you a confident feeling when you swing your clubs.

Great explanation on the advantages of a larger grip! According to Golf Pride, I should be in "undersize" grips. I switched to midsize after a thumb injury and it helped my to stop holding the grip so tight. It made a massive difference. My thumb and hands don't feel so fatigued by the end of a round and my thumb doesn't hurt as it had been. I definitely recommend a larger grp for anyone with hand problems based on my experience.

I totally get it, I am 6'6"... although I use a midsized grip, with 4 wraps of tape. Regular grips feel like I am holding a pencil! Jumbo grips just don't allow me to square the club right...but...I have a very compact swing with very little movement in my legs...especially my left leg...which has been operated on many, many times, and my left knee is bone on bone! So I mainly use my upper body strength to create club head speed! I played American Football in college, where my initial injuries occurred back in 1977.

Ha same. I’m a large glove size so went to midsize a few years ago. Just bought some new irons and rather than change the grips straight away I went to the range and played a round with the std size grips on and I felt like I had more control of the club face, just felt better so I’m going back to std. You might think it’s the new clubs rather than the grips but the new ones are in theory harder to use than my old set. Horses for courses I suppose!

Just a tip on regripping. I use a model building air compressor and a modified brass swage nipple to fit into the hole on the rear of the grip. If you administer a small amount of air while pushing the grip on, it slides up without resistance. I can apply a new set of grips to a full set in about 15 minutes. It's also great for testing grips. You don't need the solvent or the grip tape for testing. You can apply the grips without glue as long as you have masking tape for added friction. This is great for trying one on two clubs with a different grip and it makes changing back a breeze.

I was getting alot of wrist and tennis elbow pain during and after range sessions and rounds so I changed all of my grips to the Large JumboMax a few months ago. Dramatic improvement to how I feel after a practice session or round, little to no pain which has been fantastic. It takes a couple range sessions to get used to the JumboMax grips, but I love them! I don't feel like I am strangling the grip anymore and I am starting to see more consistancy in strike, distance and accuracy through all clubs. Definitely recommend to anyone that has wrist or forearm pain during and/or after a round. I have larger hands but I feel that even the small or medium JumboMax grips would be a great change for people with smaller hands. Test one at the range on a spare club that you have laying around. It is a small initial cost that could transform how you feel and play the game we love!

I'm fairly new to golf. Went in for a fitting. According to golf standards, my hand size falls into standard size grips but I never really liked how they felt in my hands. Glad you made this video to talk about the grips. I wear a XXL glove and also deal with a little bit of wrist and hand pain when using standard or even midsize grips. I even went up to a GP Jumbo grip on my driver, but still was not quite the fit. I just put the Ultralite Small JumboMax on my 3 hybrid last week to try it out. What an immense difference! Already regripped my driver and have a whole set of the XS ultralite grips coming for my new iron set due to arrive in a couple of weeks. Hitting the ball straighter, using so much less grip pressure and they are certainly super tacky which I like as well. Would recommend 10/10 for anyone with larger hands or hand pain issues. Absolute gamechanger. Cheers!

Why did you go with the XS, just curious. I myself am 6'2" have large hands, 8.5inches from crease on the bottom of my hand to the tip of my middle finger. I ordered the jumbomax ultralight in medium and small to test them out. I felt like medium was slightly too big, and small was perfect. I'm sure I would have been happy with either the XS, S, or Medium, but decided today to order a full set in the small size. I was on the fence between the small and extra small. But ended up ordering the small because I never got to try the extra small. Hopefully I made the right decision!

@@michaelpearsontx I am about 6 foot and measure a hair over 9 inches on that measurement. I tried out the small, which I love, and have put on all my long clubs…driver, 3 wood and hybrid. I went with the XS for my irons just so I could have a little more control over my release point as large grips make it a little harder to get a good release and can possibly cause you to push to the right. Plus I wanted just a little more feel in the fingers and not the palms for my short irons. There is only a 1/16” inch difference, but noticeable enough. These grips are amazing no matter what size you go with and are a great talking point on the course. 10/10 recommend.

A tip after watching your technique. When you put a grip on never push the butt end of the grip. You need to let the air inside escape as you slide the grip on. That air escapes through the small hole in the butt end of the grip. If you put your hand over this hole whilst pushing the grip on air pressure builds up inside and the grip won't slide on.

I bought a new set of Srixon Z585 with the usual sized grips. I feel like my hands are missing something, and I'm only a large glove. I will use them next season, and re-grip with at least medium with a wrap. Larger grips reduce hooks too, so my Ping tour driver will get medium with a wrap also. Super fat jumbo, too much perhaps. But if you have a large plus to x-large hand, certainly.

I worried about the changes in the weighting of the club's. But you just said it's a lighter grip with the new compounds. I will have to check that out. Thanks Pete

I’ve used thicker grips for years now but I had to make my own by wrapping the grip in handle bar tape and electric tape. I got it looking tidy. I’ve got big hands and thin grips felt weird.

Great video Pete, and good luck with them. I truly hope it takes care of your wrist issues. I am intrigued to see more videos with you using them with your swing as opposed to the previous video where you used them with a 1 plane swing. A course vlog of a couple holes with discussion after each shot on feel, feel vs real, and differences noticed on said shots than previously using "standard" style grips.

This got me thinking smaller hands not to go necessarily with the thinner grips. What fits best for your swing and the game. Thanks Pete!

I put a jumbo grip on an extra shaft for my driver and it was an interesting experiment. I tend to hook the ball when I miss, but with this I was fading it much more. That being said....if I missed one it was a huge fade/slice and got me in trouble a few times. I liked it, but I would need to really experiment more with irons to see if I liked it. I currently use mid sized grips and throw on 2 or 3 wraps of tape which seems to work really well for me.

I switched to these grips 18 months ago. I love them. The last I have changed is my grip with these. What I realized is that with this weak grip how my body rotates and my ball position had to change. With a weaker grip I actually play the ball further back in my stance my shoulders are square to closed at impact. This allows me to be shallow and hit a high baby draw. I only changed these things recently and that was firing a 64. I’ve had some of the best ball striking range sessions. In my small sample size of playing I hit a ton of greens. One of the reasons I think this works for me is my lead hip is tight and my trail arm straightens early. The grips take getting use to but they are amazing once you do. Good luck with your journey and welcome jumbomax family

I switched to a more parallel grip about 8-10 years ago, first by building my right hand up with tape and then moving to the less tapered grips when they became available. Improved my accuracy going a little thicker for sure. I may move to a midsize or larger on my next regrip and see if that helps as well.

When you put the bigger grip into the center of your left hand it will restrict your wrist break a bit which will cost you CH speed but should increase your accuracy. Good swings for you.

I have bigger hands. Used the GolfPride graph and i border on Mid-size to Jumbo. I just changed to Mid-Size (2x wraps) on all but my Driver and 3 wood as they are brand new clubs. So far, i feel better and it definitely forces me to flex my left wrist more naturally. So far distance hasn't changed, but comfort is much better. Distance increases are in my future

I did the same thing as I too border on Midsize to Jumbo. I put Golf Pride CP2 on and while better, still missing full comfort. Just put on these JumboMax on my 7 to test in large and they fit great and can really feel the clubhead. Will do some more testing to see if a permanent change is coming

I switched about 6 months ago. Dropped my HCAP about 4 points. I honestly didn't think about the hand or wrist pain but I had quite a bit before I switched and now I don't. I never correlated that to the grips. Also I find it very hard to miss left with these grips. Really takes away that 2 way miss.

I changed from regular grips with 2 layers of tape, to mid sized +4 grips. The change felt drastic and I've really struggled all year since the change. I changed to stop me flipping the head left hitting big hooks, which has worked, but now I'm struggling with being able to release the club properly. This is causing weak cutty shots and a loss of distance 🙈😭😭😭

Tried the JumboMax grips and liked them for a while. But they just felt a little too big. I wish they had a slightly smaller version in the Ultralight. They have a size I like in the Tour version, but I like the feel of the Ultralight better. I eventually switched to the Golf Pride MCC Plus4 in Midsize and I like that. I think that the traditional grip sizing guidelines are no longer accurate. I think they should have people play a slightly larger grip than has traditionally recommended.
@starwf07
@starwf07 2 жыл бұрын
Ha, I think that grip may have been hard going on because you subconsciously held back on the amount of solvent, since the end of the club wasn't over the drip pan. Just scoot it back over the drip pan and soak the thing - all the extra gets collected and reused anyway. Not really much waste to worry about. I've recently moved to midsize grips and have actually thought about going bigger, because it helps me relax my hands and wrists, and get less "flippy", which is a big issue for me.

Have you thought about graphite iron shafts as a remedy for the wrist pain? I believe (and could be misinformed) they absorb more of the impact and therefore reduce the stress on your wrists

I switched a little while back because I was having issues after my carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel surgeries. They have helped, and the only issue I have had is that I wish I would have bought 1 size down from the XL Ultralight straight tech. Just a little too big sometimes. I am killing my driver with it though.

i'm going to try these. i have some carpal tunnel issues and sometimes it hurts my left hand just to grip it neutral. that's led to a whole series of issues because i subconsciously try to cheat in different parts of the swing to compensate.
