This was my childhood right there. From 1997- 2006 me and the family and grandparents stayed here for about 4/5 days every other year. I watched your other pontins video and dreaded Pakefield fell off just as much but you know what's crazy, it actually looks similar to how I remember it! I'm glad they've managed to refurbishment it and keep ontop of most of it. This was a trip down memory lane for me and I loved watching this. The restaurant and main entertainment area is exactly the same as it was when I went there as a kid. The boat seats, the bars, the arcades. I remember that entertainment room being absolutely packed out, you were lucky to get a seat, the dance floor was always busy, the arcades was always filled. The entertainment room always smelled of candyfloss😂😂 ahh I wish I could go back in time and relive all that. I'm glad they kept the games room, funny how the ceiling hasn't changed but the walls use to be a dark red and the carpet was black👀🤣 AND they even had archery I there, mental to think of that now lol. Mini golf hasn't changed, there use to be a go kart track but that seems to have gone. The titanic structure outside the restaurant and the paintings inside the restaurant all the same lol but if you'd never been before you'd think they just installed that so I'm glad they've kept that looking tip top. I remember having to walk across the carpark to get to the beach but that might be because of where we use to stay, it was close. The beach is amazing and still looks golden and fine. Understandably you couldn't film in the pool but I bet that isn't as big as I use to think it was haha. Walking around Pakefield really threw me back and I almost knew where everything was before you even got there😂 £99 is pretty decent. Even as a kid I never use to rate the food, dad was never keen but for what you payed for it got us by. Great video I hope it still gets busy in the summer cos its actually well looked after compared to the other Pontins these days.

4:45 The water in the pipes above ground heats up a bit in the sun, usually a sign that the chalet doesn't have the best insulation. Been binging on these Tim as they are fascinating to me as a working class (which was a lot easier to define then, than it is now) child of the eighties who had holidays at Pontins/Butlins/Rhyl/Prestatyn/Blackpool etc and now as an adult that works in public policy and is trying to help address social imbalances caused by wealth inequality and a lot of the other modern issues which means that, for a lot of families, places like Pontins are the only realistic choice to treat either themselves or their children to a break. Really admire your objective approach to reviewing these places and not casting aspersions on those who may choose to stay in them. What's so frustrating about these places is that they don't need *that* much work to get them looking good again, but you worry that with this period of high inflation combined with the skills shortage brought about with Brexit and Covid means that it's just not economically viable for Britannia to renovate them. It's a catch-22. Hire more staff and renovate at the cost of hundreds of millions (it must be close to that if you combine all the Pontins together) and there is no way to mitigate the costs other than pass some on to the consumer. Those consumers - in the vast majority of cases - might struggle to even afford Pontins at current prices and so if they don't pay to holiday there's no point in renovating etc etc. So you're left with this kind of uneasy truce. Accept that the accommodation is barely somewhere to rest your head, in exchange for the majority of the budget going on the main entertainment venue and getting a decent meal each day for all the family for next to nothing (in low season). Just really interesting and often frustrating social studies and I hope that Pontins see your travelogues and at least address *some* of the underlying issues of health and safety like the open skips and dodgy rendering on the walls - which is the least anyone deserves regardless of whether they're staying at the Mandarin Oriental or Pontins.

As an American I’ve been looking through a few of these with a mix of bemusement and morbid curiosity. I can’t really think of anything quite like these in the US-most of them seem like they offer only slightly more than you could get at a typical suburban “family fun center”. The closest things I can think of resort-wise are like a Great Wolf Lodge (an indoor water park) and other themed hotels, many of which cluster around larger attractions like Disney parks or beachfront cities and offer some amenities, with the main draw being that they’re convenient to the big draw but offer a lower price than staying on-resort. Are most of these “holiday parks” close to external attractions? The way you discussed the beach made it seem like it was notable that there was one nearby. I would find it hard to see the appeal if not… This is the first one that I would describe as “habitable”. At £33/night (≈$50?) I would call that a perfectly serviceable budget hotel. Getting two meals a day included (even if mediocre) is pure gravy. At one of the other locations you mention that there was only a little mold on the wall-I would argue that the correct amount of mold is no mold! Even for a super-budget motel!

Marvellous. It's exactly what to expect from a proper holiday park. For the price it's fantastic.
@tailsplayspoker93522 жыл бұрын
When you consider the price and you get breakfast and dinner included, also free use of the snooker tables (which I would spend at least 3 hours a day playing) it is excellent value. The shower was funny lol reminds me of school changing room showers

Not all the showers are like that, some are walk in showers. I've stayed there 6 times now over the past few years and always had good clean chalets. Can't beat it for the price you pay its excellent. An ideal base for days out visiting other places too.

Around 16:15 - 16:30 is Surf City which is where the upgraded chalets are. We stay in this area and these chalets seem to get more attention than the ones at the other end of the park. Also you didn't go to a themed stay which can be 80's music with tribute bands for example. You tend to get more people stay for these.

Probably the cold water is warm at first due to the plumbing for it being close to a hot water pipe or it’s in a wall space that often gets hot whenever the weather is warm/hot! Of course it’s possible that a short length of the pipe might be fully exposed outside if it has a main valve/water meter! :)

@@WalkWithMeTim yep i have a small hand washing sink in our room over the carport at home and it is exactly the same you can see where the pipes come up out of the floor pretty close together and split either side on the sink going up to the taps and so the cold water is always warm till you run it a bit!

Remember that site very well from the early 80’s. In the main auditorium the left (yellow) wall was not originally there, it was open plan but the seating on that side where the amusement arcade is now was like bench seats and tables like a cafeteria over spill area. From the Seaview Bar to the cliffs was a short walk and along the cliff tops there used to be several runs of old WWII trenches, these got filled in due to safety concerns in the 80’s but they were a cool place to explore. Games room used to only have table tennis tables and darts.

I feel like this place has such huge potential - the adults only angle is an interesting one and I think if they cleaned the place up a bit, even some nicer landscaping - nothing fancy, just well cut grass and some nice places to sit with some plants -, and the right advertising it could be great. The location is just so fantastic, that huge beach giving them access to organise things like beach volleyball, as well. I don't remember ever staying somewhere with apartments like this but as a kid in the 90s I so often went to holiday parks that often we brought our touring caravan to, or hired a static caravan. They were fantastic! All the entertainment so close on hand. It's a shame to see places like this with such amazing potential just get sort of wasted by the larger companies putting in minimal effort. Even the inability to grab a good coffee or glass of wine at 4pm while relaxing in the sun seems like a missed opportunity (I know people have fridges/access to their own kettle, but these extra facilities are good on holiday). One thing I've noticed in all your holiday park videos that I have seen, you've never mentioned a shop on site. I always remember having access to a small shop - nothing fancy, just basic food items for those self catering and don't want to drive out of site to pick up milk etc and maybe things like fold up chairs that could be taken to the beach or outdoor toys (less needed in adult only granted). Do little shops not exist on holiday sites any more?

I find it interesting at 4 of the 6 snooker tables in the games room are Star tables which are the exact same tables they use on most of the the professional snooker tour. (With the same tight pockets I think.) High quality tables for holiday resort. I was expecting some fairly rundown tables. 😂

One of the better camps you have attended Tim. As for the bins - you can never have too many as long as they are regularly emptied. I remember a few years ago Christchurch Council decided to remove all the bins from the quay to "encourage people to take their rubbish home". Sadly we know what people are like - there was litter everywhere. Not even sure the initiative lasted a year.

The cold tap is initially warm because the plumber who installed the system ran the hot and cold pipes next to each other or next to a heating pipe. You have to push that water out to then get the colder water from further down the system.
@ianedmonds9191 Жыл бұрын
Probably the cold pipe is alongside the hot pipe so it heats up the water in the cold pipe over time. Running it for a few moments gets fresh unheated water to your chalet. Luv and Peace.

I think for what you have paid it's a pretty good deal. The Beach looked great and it seems they were trying with some of the entertainments. The accommodation was fine for a group of friends or a cheap date. For a 100 quid for three days half board I would be more than happy with that. I have never been to a Pontins but if that's what they were like I honestly couldn't complain.
