I visited Rokid's HQ to see the Vision Pro alternative from China's AR pioneer

I recently went to Hangzhou to visit Rokid's headquarters, interview company founder, and also attend Rokid Open Day 2024 to check out the new AR products from the pioneer of the AR eyewear category.
The new products consist of two items: the Rokid Max 2 AR eyeglasses and Rokid Station 2 computing device. Together they make up the Rokid AR Lite kit. I also interviewed Rokid founder and CEO Misa Zhu and checked out his awesome vintage Macintosh collection.

Nice review and nice to see that China is increasingly taking care about the style to make things not look goofy. I don't know if this is already a thing, but something I want to see in the AR is a possibility to lock the virtual thing in some place and the other area is the real world. For example, I'm in my chair watching something and if I move my head to look what is in my side, I can see who is talking to me in the real world. And then the next step will be extrapolate that to mix people that is not in the room with those are physically there, like a meeting to just talk or everybody see the same thing. (obs: probably will be a good seling point, specially in the US, if all friends have one and could emulate a D&D like events for people who play RPG. Or a table game, etc). This will be a kind of when the first nintendo land on the market moment, it was cool to get together with friends and play, and not this individualistic thing that the industry has become.

Great video, as much for the China insight as for the tech content. It shows how far ahead the Chinese market is. It seems like we don't need a 4k screen in front of each eye for these applications. We have made education so dull, in our schools, in the US at least. I can see many of these applications making education fun for kids.

Dr. Zhu seems like an amazingly passionate guy who deeply loves technology and the products he has built. I am sure I will be buying a Rokid product in a few years time, they will dominate this space like other Chinese brands are beginning to dominate the smartphone space.

Love the unique look at tech from different perspective. Wish a few more captivating questions were asked to the CEO/Founder. I almost fell of my chain when you said "spatial computing", Apple's marketing term for AR/VR , describing Rokid and the future to the CEO! oh good i can't wait to see how the rokid max 2 stacks up agains the xreal air 2 ultra still dragging its feet i bought a pair of xreal air 's last year, and it's the best peace of tech i've bought in years the minor upgrades on the 2's and didn't blow my socks off i'm more interested in the air 2 ultra but it's mega pricy i'd love to see the look and feel of the new rokids specs pricing. i think it's still some years for those glasses to really have proper AR features other the floating screens and tiny gimmicks i mostly use mine as video glasses for hanheld gaming and netflix on the go.

Pretty cool to see evolution of AR tech over the years. I'm pretty sure it won't replace smartphones at all but it'll probably live side by side as an alternative consumer tech. At this point, the future is yet uncertain.

Can the AR space support apps like chrome and netflix yet? The first rokid max can't even do that. Also can the windows opened in the AR space stay in place. The last rokid moved along with your head and was disorientating

Hi, we've developed our own HyperBrowser, which supports bookmarking web pages to the app list. You can enjoy Netflix and Chrome experiences. Additionally, the windows are fixed by default this time and won't move with head movements.

Hi, the existence of the nose rest/nose pad is to accommodate different nose shapes as much as possible. Our new product has been upgraded to an Air Nose Pad, increasing softness and adjustability.

@@RokidGlobal **After studying the glasses (from the videos), while the electronics are placed on the upper half of the lens area, while the AR is projected to the lower half of the lens (like old bifocal lenses). To keep the line of sight straight, the R&D has designed to the nose rest/nose pad to raise the frame; the frames doesn't aesthetically compliment the user's face as the frame is normal sized, and is float so high up and away from the cheeks. This design flaw will cause user's neck to hurt because of the tendency to incline the head backward by a few degree. This flaw can seen in the ads, reviewers and user videos. I have also noticed the R&D added a cover to counteract the flaw with Rokid Max AR Glasses, where it makes the device look a normal pair of glasses, and aesthetically pleasing. The product needs to look humanly cool, not make the user look a insect with protruding eyes. There maybe a solution for it, but I am not expert in engineering so I do not know the limitations of the electronics.

These companies get their clients wrong. People mostly buy these to watch content. What is needed to watch content comfortably? a larger display, like a 1 inch, and a larger FOV with a better resolution, like a 1440p micro oled. No one wants to watch a movie as if it is looking through a penny coin with those small displays. I would rather pay 700$ for a device like that than this new devices with all these AR functions people never use.

With them, you can enjoy a screen much larger than that of a phone, computer, or even a television, up to 215 inches. Additionally, the single-eye resolution of this new product is 1200P, making it one of the highest resolutions among AR glasses on the market.

@@RokidGlobal I get that. I bought an Xreal Air 2 a few months ago and returned it. The reason is the display is too small, and I had to press it on my face, and even with that, it didn't help because it looked like I was watching movies through a penny coin. These glasses need a 1-inch display with better FOV and resolution of 1440p. When this is achieved, it will be the end of TVs. This is very achievable with current tech, but your focus is somewhere else with these AR functions that people might use once a year. Maybe release 2, one AR-focused and the other one for theater
