When it comes to tourism, Bratislava could be a relatively inexpensive destination compared to Vienna. I often see many Austrians visiting the city on weekends, riding their bikes along the Danube promenade. It's cheap for them, but not necessarily for Slovaks. Many tourists tend to visit Bratislava after exploring Vienna. They often take a bus ride to the city center for a couple of hours or even go on a boat journey along the Danube from Vienna, sailing to Bratislava, and perhaps continuing further south to Budapest. This city has a lot of potential, which is still undiscovered.

@@drasel_ thats easy my friend, when people moved from a home country to another country they can call themselfes as citizens of that state but they are ethnically still members of their home nation because they keep the traditions and speak their native language in their household. you have many examples, the Slovak ethnic group of the Protestant faith emigrated to Vojvodina and now it is a region in Serbia where 80 thousand Slovaks live. a similar example is the gypsies in Slovakia, they came to us from India and are often defined in the population census, even though the majority of their population no longer speaks their native language, so they still preserve their traditions

@tereziamarkova2822 Жыл бұрын
The brief overview of history was pretty solid! However, I do have some notes: 1. Avars actually settled the area alongside Slavs, even conquering and ruling over them. Also Samo Empire collapsed almost immediately after Samo's death and later principalities like Nitra and Moravia had nothing to do with it, other than their majority Slav population. 2. Great Moravia actually collapsed at the begining of the 10th century, it's just that it took untill the 11th century before Magyar tribes consolidated into the Kingdom of Hungary. 3. There were plenty of castles in Slovakia as far back as Middle Ages, it's just that most of them didn't survive the age of gunpowder. They were either abandoned for fancy new homes that were closer to the city/village of a noble's choice (which mostly did survive), or wrecked by the canons of whichever army happened to pass by and also abandoned. 4. Hungary didn't "suddenly" wish to secede. Hungarian nobles (oversimplifying a bit, some of them did side with Habsburgs from the start) fought with Habsburgs since the counterreformation really kicked into gear, then manage to play nice just long enough to kick the Turks out, then went back to fighting Habsburg, at which point they were finally made to fall in line. 5. Okay, I know this is an oversimplified overview, but seriously, you just. Left out Maria Theresia and Joseph II.?! For shame. 6. The 1848 revolution happened about a century and a half after the Turks left and had some actual democratic goals, so I wouldn't call it ingratitude. That said Kossuth was about as nice and sensitive to the rights of minorities as all Hungarians at the time, so he kinda had that one coming. 7. Booh! For shame! Using a Russian song when talking about Rusyns! (Seriously, dude, in 2023? After the 2022 invasion?!) 8. The 1968 revolution wasn't anticomunist per se, it was mostly about introducing capitalist elements into the economy making the totalitarian regime less awful, which Moscow didn't like, so they sent their army to strongarm local communist party into recanting their heresies.

Slovakia has beautiful landscapes and amazing food, totally worth visiting. I worked in a multinational company and the Slovakian colleagues were very friendly. They initiated me to hockey and it was more fun than football 😂. One time I remember they asked me to bring national drink (țuică). They were disappointed and told me it’s a nice “tea”. So they opened a bottle of homemade slivovitz which probably had around 90% alcohol. Needless to say after a couple of minutes one of the guy passed out and the other was dancing without music. Best time of my life! Greetings from Bucharest!

12:32 when you look at the Radnica building in the middle of the frame (the Townhall, tall yellow building) you can see a little black dot next to the first tall window, that's a cannon ball from the Napoleons time and his siege of Bratislava. On that same building, there is a line at the bottom which marks the water level during the great flood of 1787, this is pretty far from the river Danube, so most of the city was flooded at that time.

I visited once Slovakia... by mistake. Phone went to sleep and when I opened Google Maps, it re-routed us through Slovakia, into Austria, without realizing it - after we realized it, we loaded up on fuel there and yeeted right back into Hungary. We then proceeded to enter into a big OMV oil refinery in Vienna(stopped at the gate by a guard), in the middle of the night, in search for a petrol station(Google Maps recommendation, again) but that's a different story :)

2 advices that might save your life: 1. If you're not a seriously seasoned drinker, don't try to keep up with drinks with the locals. I'd recommend drinking every second round at most. 2. If you decide to visit our crown mountains, Vysoké Tatry, make sure to buy map in Slovakia, not in Czech Republic, Poland or anywhere else. Every week there is some foreigner that needs rescuing because they bought shite map.

Maria-Theresa was never the Queen of Austria. She was first the Queen of Hungary (well technically she was King of Hungary), then 2 years later she also became the Queen of Bohemia and with Hungarian support she could defend her claim to be the Arch Duchess of Austria while installing her husband as the Puppet Holy Roman Emperor.

There are actually many Romanian influences on Slovakian culture as much of the Tatras were settled by Romanian ("Vlachs") herders migrating along the Carpatians with their herds. This is why the Slovak national white cheese is called Bryndza which comes from the Romanian word Branza (white cheese) - a word that's not Latin in origin but from some long lost Balkan language. Other cheeses elsewhere have a Romanian derived name like the different Balkanic Kashkaval cheeses or Bosnian Vlasic cheese) - because the Vlachs were expert cheesemakers amd that's why traditional Slovak cuisine was cheese based historically. The Vlachs didn't stop in Slovakia but also migrated up to Poland where they merged with Slavs and became the Goral people, they also settled in present day Czechian region of Moravian Wallachia and probably further. The Romanians didn't retain their Romance language though but merged with the local populations present.
