The hymn is about the sacrifice made during WWI by British soldiers, and the 'other country' refers to heaven. A wonderful hymn and my favourite.

A lovely hymn sung by a beautiful lady, perhaps an epitome of the greatness of two ancient monarchies: Great Britain and Denmark whose royal families saw it as their sacred duty to remain among their people against the Nazi onslaught. Few over here know that every day during the Nazi occupation, King Christian X rode on his horse to Christiansborg to raise the Dannebrog over the House of Parliament, that against strict orders from the Nazi occupier under pain of getting shot. How many remember that Field Marshall Montgomery raced to Denmark after the defeat of Germany in order to keep Denmark out of the Soviet Union? This is the spirit of patriotism so well embodied by “ I vow to thee, my country”.

I vow to thee my country, all earthly things above, Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love. The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test, That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best. The love that never falters, the love that pays the price, The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice. And there's another country I've heard of long ago, Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know. We may not count her armies, we may not see her king, Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering. And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, And her ways are ways of gentleness and all her paths are peace.

I wish i ever felt so strongly connected with the country i was born in as you feel for england. I wish i felt strongly tied with anything at all. Unfortunately my country does everything to divide its people. To make a significant portion of its citizens hate it. Third world countries have a lot to learn from your great country. I hope they learn their lesson and learn it well. I hope they learn how to raise its citizens with love for their land not hatred not wanting to change its regime. Oppression and tyranny leads to disaster. Countries should embrace their citizens not kill them or destroy them you love your country i wish i liked mine one bit. People are people most of them are human beings but we lack the general mentality your country has.

I am a Welsh American, whose ancestors came here in the 18th century. So there's a lot mutt in me too. As much as I love my Welsh heritage, and acknowledge English arrogance, I believe God used the British Empire to accomplish His own wonderful purposes, in spite of themselves. And that purpose is not the Empire, nor any nation of my Celtic kinsmen. It is His Kingdom that He cares for, of which the song turns its attention, as should we. It stirs my soul to weeping.

I am a Brit whose family are not only English but Irish(the south of)Scots and Welsh also Cornish which means I am as Celtic as anyone who lives on these islands . However I appreciate our Irish brother does not share our view of WSC Our ruling class including the Irish contingent treated the Catholic south worse than the rest of the country. Just to give you a little more evidence to my further assertion that the Brit/Irish are all Celts is that when a recent archaeological dig took place in the county of Somerset. clearly part of England for over a thousand years. Some 8000 year old skeletons were found, DNA was recovered . Subsequently DNA was taken from living villagers at the nearby village of Cheddar. A direct match was made to a school teacher who lives with his family there

I suspect my ancestors have lived in these islands for 1500+ years (being a peasant, I can only trace back 500 yrs). If some came over with the Anglo Saxons they almost certainly cohabited/married with Celts. In the 19th century there was a Scot from Sutherland. I'm proud of them all. If we, in the British Isles, cannot make a Union succeed - God (or whatever) help the rest of the world! Tragic that we should follow the path of the Balkans/south east Europe. Together, the peasants of Great Britain achieved so much, despite the efforts of the ruling class. Sad to watch it ripped apart in the name of nationalism.

Secession often arises from emotionalism, which may or may not be good. The expense-of maintaining some two hundred embassies and consulates around the world, of building a self-standing defense force, of renegotiating hundreds of treaties and other contracts, of supporting services already available, etc.-is numerical, not emotional. Do you know what you seek? Will you be better off? Does it really make an effective difference from the way things are? Are you willing to pay for that difference? Have you counted the cost? In a way those questions are at the heart of this great patriotic hymn.
@crackpot1489 жыл бұрын
David Ramsey You can thank rampant, predatory capitalists and successive governments, who have empowered, aided and abetted them, for the turning inward of the two British Celtic nations. Do you think we are happy with the crumbs from the tables of those we have enriched through our labours? You've heard "better dead than red"? Well here's my awkward paraphrase, better destitute than prostitute. Proud to be this, proud to be that? Empty pride because there is no pride in being a minion of a carefully managed, cynically exploitative system that really has no consciousness of us as sentient flesh and blood and bone. Real beings with feelings, ambition and the wish to be free, enslaved by a wealthy elite that only see us as expendable but conveniently self replicating means to their ends? Stuff your mawkish anthems, they are all part of a device to instill the empty pride that keeps us half willingly bound to their breaking wheel. British nationalism, devolution, the sham of "democracy" are all a sleight of hand to draw our attention away from the truth of our existence, that it is only tolerated as long as it is of value to those few who believe they own us.

@pouch98 It may be an English song but it refers to Britain as a whole so in my opinion it dnt matter who sings it also it got nothing to with anthems lol English anthem is "God save the Queen" tho there have been discusions bout ppl wanting a seperate anthem for us like the others do but I dnt see a major need for that after all the Queen does live in England :) however if we were to have one just for England I think Jerusalem would be a good choice :D

@hablerz Why would that make us fell bad? The English consider themselves 'anglo-saxons'. A great portion of our language is German. Our blood is as German as it is French. The fact that Queen Anne was succeeded by her second cousin George I, means the Norman lineage didn't die with Queen Anne.
