When I was twelve I started learning the thumb picking, I played the thumping for a couple years then added the lead runs. It's my favorite style. I'm 71 and still learning.

Your lessons are a real heritage, Bob. I revisit it regularly. The magic works: I find back what I learned without much difficulty and even enriched with a better understanding of the stuff. Today: I walk the line, tomorrow: Don't think twice, etc. I made up a small repertoire of all your lessons and songs, the daily opportunity to improve fingering, rhythm, fludity, musicality. There are always details to perfect by listening and looking at you. But we miss you and I hope you come back!

Hey Viv, I'm still here and just busy with so much. I started a new set of lessons with a bass player that's going to be 3 chords gospel music. It's a big undertaking and now I'm waiting on him to finish his part. That will be one of the first things I get started back with but may take a while. In the meantime, glad you are playing a lot and hope you are still having as much fun. The new guitar has got to be a good thing!!! Always the best to you VIV- happy hot pickin' (heard it was really hot there last month!!! bob

Wow! I found this video after looking up travis picking, a technique the KZbin algorithm has drawn me towards after suggesting I this self taught guitarist hat his head around inversions, improvisations, ‘electro flamenco’(?) and a host of other tricks beyond my ability. This video was fantastic, because you showed how to play the measures slowly, which built confidence and then 11 minutes in you off handedly mentioned you were Cash’s record producer!!! Excellent. Simply fantastic

Hey Patrick, thank you for taking the lesson here and I'm glad it's helping! I have a lot more videos on the Travis Style of picking that you can find all that on my home channel. I recommend the playlist Fingerpicking For Beginners series which is here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGjbnpKgqrOWhrs Other than muting the bass strings, this is the basic pattern Merle Travis used. Of course, there's an infinite amount of variations, but this is basically how to do it... Really glad you are learning this and If you need help, just let me know!! Happy pickin' !! bob

Also wanted to let you know that I forgot to reply to the play along request but my answer is yes we need the play along. I usually watch the video with guitar in hand. Maybe I do the play along then or I move to TUX and work up the tempo to return back to the play along. Popping something new at us every three weeks or so is great. It's like when I was a kid waiting at the front door for the door to door mail delivery (which we don't get anymore). I'm still a kid and I look forward to the guitar lesson delivery. Thanks my friend and keep up the great work.

Hi Susan, great to hear from you and glad you are liking this. Johnny just kind of strums this song and it's definitely Luther who came up with this. Later on with other guitarists that Johnny worked with, they added their own spin on this. So many different ways to play it- this is just 1 way. Thanks again !! bob

Great pick Bob, my Mon was a huge Johnny Cash/June Carter fan, so I grew up on his music and the old Grand Ole Opry stuff. This is the song I always tried to pluck out when ever Id see a guitar sitting some where. I had an old Framus once. when I was about 14, for about a month. Money was real tight so when it was mysteriously smashed, Dad wouldn't replace it. Great memories, great tunes..... Thanks Bob

What a joyful surprise, Bob! A nice tribute to Johnny Cash. I love this kind of music and this typic Travis rhythm that you manage to demystifie. I had already tried with other teachers :-((.... We feel your long experience. You seems like a fish in water! I was dreaming of playing a song with a strong beat, we can not find better, it gives wings and the desire to dance. It does not seem difficult, at least this first lesson. No problem for muting the bass strings. Pure happiness! Thanks once more!

Hi Viv!! I though you would like this song!! I was concerned about the muting part if that would be a problem, but I'm glad you told me. This thumb pattern is just like we have been doing for the other songs except with the alternating between bass notes- so a little more to do with the thumb with this style but basically the same thing (or at least the same concept). The next lesson (other than the play along) we are just going to add 1 note with our index finger. This is the part that gives the pattern that "jump" .. it sounds difficult but it's not that hard I think. Thanks VIV,,,

Hi Bob. As you granted us a few days off, I am continuously jumping from Valley View to I Walk the Line, which I had neglected a bit, thus forgotten. Watching this first video (1:33), I realize that you mention a lesson 3, which is not the Intro, but rather seems to include additional melody notes, very interesting and somptuous. I guess it's for later and i hope i didn't miss anything. I have not succeeded the bend on the 6th string yet, hard on a steel string.Travis Palm muting requires a lot of practice to get a steady sound, but it's fun. Thanks Bob!

Hi Viv, yes, I am hoping to get to this lesson 3 and singing with this song soon. You didn't miss anything as I've been slammed in the studio and gigs but it's all good. The Travis style Cash videos have a lot of information for sure so don't worry so much about trying to get it all perfect. I always try to take away a little something useful for everything I try to learn so, it just gets added to what I can do on the guitar. Hope all is well and I will talk with you soon! bob

I believe that it is a lot of work for you. I ( and a LOT of other people) appreciate what you are doing for us ( real beginners). It is just great. As i started in december with a 3/4 gitar of my friend , i never could aspect what an impact your lessons gonna have on me. But now i have my own gitar. I would try to practice 15 till 30 minutes a day. It is impossible. I practice each day at least 2 Hours and i have to force myself to stop. It is like a virus for me. And the one who makes me sick are your lessons. Sick on a real fine fantastic way. I have not a lot of money but if there is a way i can donnate something, i would like to do that. You decerve it. By the way. I finisched the amazing gray lessons. It is wonderfull. And now i started this lessons. And everybody who will learning gitar. Join us and Bob !!!!!!!!!!!!! He is amazing!!!!!!

HEy Ernie, this is so very kind of you to say all this, and makes it all worth the effort- you just made my evening!! I really think it's great that you have the "guitar illness" I call it.. I can tell you right off that anyone with this illness is the one who ends up being a good guitarists. As long as your fingers are okay and you are not experiencing any pains, the more you have that guitar in your hands the better you will get. A very important point I always try to instill is to go slooow, very slow.. with it all including how fast (tempo) you are playing. The slower you go, the better you will get. I'm trying not to show a bunch of songs but to get you to play good. So don't be afraid to go back to the beginning again and work on stuff. That's my best advice. Big THANKS again and glad you are here!!! happy pickin' !!! bob

Hey Bob this is great stuff. I have been going back over some of the previous lessons related to individual chords and working on the timing and tempos; as well as nailing the Progression of the 50's. Walk the lne I can mostly do with a strumming pattern so this is very timely - I'm loving it.

I pulled out the strat and had a blast with this. I cant wait for the next lessons. The thrill of making music is genuine and learning new stuff everyday is awesome. I'm discovering the value of a metronome, I've not used one much in the past but find it helps a lot. As well as just keeping time, it helps to keep the song going when a mistake is played. YES,,,,, I have learned the lesson on the metronome
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Steve, !!! sorry for the delay, was out of town gigin' .. yes, the strat is gonna really do this one up, as it's typically played on an electric. Yes, the metronome ... can't stress this enough. That will clean up everything if you follow it. I think you are doing good if you noticed that you should just play through it when you make a mistake. !!!! Thanks Steve, glad you are pickin' and having some fun!!! bob

Hey Bob, i hope that everything is going better for you. About theTravis sound (5:02 on the video), i had a lot of difficulty in muting the strings, maybe because my right hand and wrist are very thin (left as well!), thus small palm surface to rest on the bass strings and mute them. I found a way that can serve other people in a similar case: I wrapped twice my wrist and the bottom of the palm with a strip of cloth, like Velpeau medical protection. Now i can get a much better Travis style sound. An adjustable wrist protection for tennis/squash or other sport player would be more practical and should suit as well if it is rather thick. I'll try.

Hi Viv, I'm hanging in there and hoping to get back with lessons here on this channel. Things for the moment are stable but there's always the ups and downs during it all. Yes, this would be a great way to mute the strings a little, especially if you are having problems with getting your palm to physically touch the strings. Many people have the exact opposite problem- toughing the strings when they are supposed to ring out. So I guess in a way this is a good problem to have and would imagine your solution would work just perfect. Hope you are well my friend!! bob

The string muting is not easy, as it's throwing a monkey wrench in nearly everything we've learned but, this is the basis of the actual picking style that Merle Travis came up with. Like everything else with the guitar, this will come with reps. I remember at first thinking that muting was counter productive but it really creates drive on the guitar, especially with an electric- and too you don't want those strings ringing out so much. THanks Trev, bob!!

Hi Bob! First feelings after a few hours of palm muting: i observe it is a matter of achieving a subtle adjustment between the complete muffling of the chord and an attenuation of its resonance or vibration: that is performed within a few millimeters of the right hand position on the bridge or the saddle and the pressure put on the string, like nuances on an artist palette 🎨. I tried a lot of occurrences to be as close as possible to what I hear when you play. For more stability I rely on the pinky or even the other 2 fingers. It is not difficult in itself but a question of practice. Happy and exciting moments anyway! Thank you Bob!
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons 6 жыл бұрын
You are there VIV!!! This is well said and exactly what I'm talking about. It does take some work to achieve , and is an adjustable sort of thing that you can alter from one extreme to the other while you are playing. The hardest thing is muting the bass strings and letting the other strings ring- like the lesson 3 that's planned. Good observations VIV... always such a pleasure to hear how you are investigating all this!!!
@yandeni

I am well aware of future difficulties but that's what's fun and the challenge. For example I think I hear the addition of 1 or + notes (in lesson 2) and the addition of a melodic line (3rd lesson), which will require a total independence of the thumb and perfect coordination. Wow! I evaluated your speed of execution, it seems be around 200 bpm ... Incredible, what energy, what virtuosity. "Je suis baba!" In the meantime I try humbly to play the pattern again and again to achieve a little automatism, just like the beats of our heart. Thank you so much, Bob, for sharing so generously your time.

@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons 3 жыл бұрын
@@joostvanbunnik7646 each course I have covers some overlapping techniques, but with the new songs also comes some different challenges like new chords, new picking patterns, leaning some more about theory as needed, and then we get into adding melodies along with it all. I will always recommend to take them all in order, as the leap from one course to the other is not so bad. The goal is for you to be able to play songs you want to play by just applying what we learned. This means you can take lessons from other KZbin instructors or learn most any song. With that said, I can already tell you that you will be able to do this! Okay, we keep in touch! Thanks Joost, it's a pleasure to see you progressing like this! bob

Hey Jack, great to hear from you and glad you like the lesson!! It's a feel thing and I find myself constantly adjusting to get it right- or close. For starters, just place the palm of your hand on the strings, then pick the guitar. It should be almost completely muted. From there it's a matter of just moving your hand in the sweet spot, and it's different for everyone in my experience. In video 2 I will continue with more on this so stay tuned!! Van Morrison; Gypsy in my soul, Into the mystic, In the garden, Song of home, Stranded, Little Village, Sitting on top of the world (with Carl Perkins) Spandau Ballet; Through the barricades The paper Kites; Bloom Joni Mitchell; Urge for going Fismoll; Trifle, History of the moon Gretchen Peters; If Heaven; The way you move me Billie Marten; Out of the black, La Lune So I'm gonna have that coffee now. Hey Mike, it's not so easy so I wouldn't beat yourself up over it. Might be one of those things that you keep trying and one time it clicks in. I might talk more about this in the next video so I'm glad you told me. What I will say right now is, the part of your palm that you want on the strings is right below the thumb. To start with, just put your palm on the strings... like all the way and then try to play. What should happen is the notes will be really thudding, like no sustain at all. Start with over emphasizing . I know you can do it, and when you do you will say- what was all the fuss about!! Keep me posted- let me know if any of this helps!! bob
