Hi Mike - love the bowl. Ive just had a sun porch re-vamped and got some Iroks boards from a local timber merchant to use as a flower plinth/cill below like a window ledge on the inside two stepped walls. Boards were 6 mt long x 50 x 225mm. I've fitted the L shape loosley and still have to sand and router the edges to remove splinters etc. before finishing with varnish. It's a bad wood to get splinters as they sting and go septic easily. One length was good and one was stained with those white marks. So, because it was rejected by the previous customer I got it cheaply as like half price. Still a lot I can use that is clear!! We chatted about it and he said Iroko is prone to it. They are pockets or spots and dont go through deeply but are scattered. I asked Google and this is the answer. . . In some cases, white spots might appear in the wood, especially in Iroko hardwood. These tiny dots are calcium carbonate deposits that become a part of the wood when the tree absorbs water from an alkaline soil. The calcium fragments don't change the quality of the wood, but they are visible.
@MikeHolton
@MikeHolton Ай бұрын
Thanks Gavin, I know what they are now and have seen it again since but back then I did not have a clue, indeed watch out for the splinters! You also should wear a mask thought turning as the bits can really do a number on your lungs.

@@GavinConwayWoodworkBBQ Cool me too but be careful, if you have the Powercap you should know it is not suitable for sanding as it only keeps out 90% of dust. I use the JSP Powercap Infinity which is rated to 98%.

The iroko grain, chatoyence and colours are amazing. Glad you decided to pick up that piece again. Gorgeous bowl. That may be too nice to sell. Well done. I did not appreciate until recently that pure tung oil is a food-safe finish and creates a hard film robust finish. Has to be 100% tung oil not the brands with fillers and dyes. Dave.

That's interesting, I'll have to have a look for some and give it a try, sounds a bit like Danish oil. All the best< Mike

Danish oils and many tung oil products have fillers, pigments etc. I have cans of such products. The 100% tung oil is a pure product with no contamination. The can need to show 100% tung oil. Dave.

Good afternoon. My husband & I just recently found your channel & have really enjoyed watching you create some beautiful projects. We have been watching several wood turners because my husband is thinking of maybe taking this up as a hobby. One question we have why does it seem that you have to sharpen your tools so often? Is that normal & the others just don't mention it or are you cutting harder woods?
@MikeHolton
@MikeHolton 7 ай бұрын
Morning Ronda and thanks for getting in touch. We all generally sharpen up as much as each other and they just don't mention it. The cutting of the wood is done with not with the edge like a knife but with a burr on the edge of the blade which can dull quickly when turning hard woods. Thanks 😀

I just use Rustins French polish, it's just pure shellac in a carrier liquid, works really well is is fairly inexpensive. Thanks Steve
