Let's talk about musical theatre dream roles I had for all the wrong reasons.
Hey Musical Theatre lovers / actors/ geeks / and everyone in between! Today, I'm taking a deep dive into the psychology behind some of my dream roles and accidentally throw myself into an existential crisis and uproot my whole identity! It's super fun :)
But seriously, this video is actually a really interesting investigation into the cross roads of my self-esteem, self-worth, body image, and self identity WITHIN the world of musical theatre and the roles that I want to play in shows. I'll be using examples from some of my fave shows like Hair, Little Women, Carrie, Gentleman's Guide, Spitfire Grill, and not Thoroughly Modern Millie (I'M SORRY OKAY I JUST HAVEN'T SEEN A GOOD PRODUCTION OF IT. "You'd be such a good Amy" "No I'm not stuck up!" "It's called acting, Kat, oh my god!" I think this is very important because I hate when you say someone could play a generally unlikeable character and they get offended. It's not saying they are *like* that person, it's just saying they could *act* that part very well, they would be good at *playing that role* , so it bothers me that people get offended by being told they could play the mean/rude/annoying characters. They're just saying you have the talent for that, not that you actually are like that character.

THANK you! Oh my god you put it in words! I was mortally offended around this time last year by someone telling me I would be a killer Vivienne Kensington in Legally Blonde because i thought they were calling me a rude, stuck up piece of work. I was talking to the same person a few weeks ago and she told me she suggested that role because she adored my belt and thought I could play "hard-ass" (her words, not mine) to Kate Shindle's standard. Looking back, I'm both very touched and feel like an ass lmao

My favourite musical ever is Bare: A Pop Opera and I’ve recently been cast as Ivy in a production. While I love the role of Ivy, I had convinced myself I had no chance because Ivy is beautiful, sexy, confident, popular and boys like her which is never anything I was, either in school or today. I was little, funny looking and never had that many friends so I had convinced myself that Ivy was a role I would never play. I’ve never played a romantic lead, I’ve always been the best friend/funny one. Then, lo and behold, someone decided to take a chance on me.

Phantom of the Opera is my favorite musical and I would LOVE to be in it! That being said, there was a time when I said I would want to be Madame Giry. I have NO DESIRE to be Madame Giry, but my brain was like look at this! You can sing this, it's a role with small amounts of dancing, you could do this! My real dream role for Phantom would be Christine Daae, but I am an alto. I would also LOVE to play Meg, but I lack the pointe skill. Maybe I’ll try out ballet, and see about tackling one of my real dream roles! 😊

This is very well said. As a mixer/legit soprano voice type, I've always wanted to play the belter roles because they're usually so much fun but usually it ain't like that even if you can mix well. It would be really cool to see more badass Soprano/mixer characters as more musical theatre shows are conceived because even though there are a few roles out there like that, there's a lot of us ready to take on that challenge and we need some love.

When I was in HS, we were doing a production of The Little Mermaid and I wanted more than anything to play Ariel. I auditioned and left feeling really great about myself. When the cast list came out the next week I saw that I was cast as Ursula and she was a BLAST. I was very confused because I didn’t want to necessarily play Ariel, I just really wanted to play a princess. I’m so happy I got to play Ursula. Her role came so easy to me in a way that made me understand that I finally found a “type” for me. That was the first time I feel like I really understood a role. And she is also right in my sweet spot of my vocal range! Man, I miss that show!

When I was younger I used to say my dream roles were always the mousy, nerdy girl (Natalie from Next To Normal, Gertrude McFuzz from Seussical, Patrice from 13, Dawn from Waitress, etc), because I think that’s how I saw myself. As someone who felt misunderstood and unable to share who they really are. At that time I had only started to take musical theater seriously, and I didn’t know much about my voice. Most of the characters that fit that description are typically mix-y and have very light, mezzo soprano tones. I, as I would discover a few years later, am more of a mezzo belter who sounds a lot better singing She Used To Be Mine than When He Sees Me. Through learning about my voice and getting to play roles outside of my comfort zone (Wednesday in the Addams Family, Sandy in Grease to name a few) I’ve been able to discover more roles that I would love to play, and frankly, I could kill it as. Some of them include: Lydia Deetz in Beetlejuice Rosie in Mamma Mia Paulette I’m Legally Blonde Jo March in Little Women and Lucy in 13

I have fully just done this with a show I’m in. I told my director I wanted to play Ashley- a funny,high status hero (like who doesn’t want to be like that)But in the end I was cast as jo-an innocent,insecure girl experiencing love for the first time. I took this is a such an insult to both my personality and mental health. I’m now a month away from show week and god I love playing jo-her innocence is the highlight of the shows comedy and the fact she is so insecure about boys is the most heart warming part of the show. I think dream roles are purely what we want to be seen as,and luckily for us,directors see past that and are clever enough to find our true selves and the best characters to fit that ❤️❤️❤️

This has happened so much to me being plus size. I would love to do Heathers so much, Heather McNamara is in my vocals and is a role I love but I know ... I am Martha. In Hairspray i love the role of Penny but I'm a Tracy. I have so much trouble finding myself in theater because of my body and so many people telling me is impossible for a girl like me to make it.

I wanted to be Scar. I'm a skinny, lanky Tenor. I'm also white. It just sounds fun to be evil and manipulative and intimidating, but that isn't what scar is about. I wanna play up the side effects of his hurt instead of actually playing a Scar that is hurt.

One of my dream roles is Angel in a production of rent, but I know that I'm more suited to play probably a Mark, or a Collins, or possibly even a Roger, but Angel yeah no. But honestly just getting cast in Rent would be AWESOME Another role I'd love to play some day would be Matron Mama Morton from Chicago, but I'm a dude, and none of the male roles really sound that fun to me, except maybe the announcer.

A. Dancer. My friend and I were talking about dream roles the other day, and I realized that I didn’t really have any because I felt like I had to fit the looks for my strap roles. But this video made me realize that a dream role is just that, one that you would want to play, even if it’s just in your wildest dreams. Thanks Kat!

Surprisingly, this doesn’t change much for me. I would LOVE to play Jack in Into The Woods, but I know I would either be Rapunzel’s Prince or The Baker (which I’d also enjoy being, just I’d prefer Jack). In Little Shop of Horrors, I’m Seymour in my school’s production (which is one of my dream roles), but I would also LOVE to be Orin as he’s just so outrageous and absolutely hilarious. I look like a Seymour and he is perfectly in my range, but I would also love to be Orin someday. Another example is Jack from Newsies. As much as I wanna sing Santa Fe, I would 100% be casted as Davey (which is not bad by any means and I would be happy), but I would love to be Jack. Idk if this happens with everyone else but a lot of times I end up loving the character by the end of the experience and end up being glad it was cast the way it was

this video has changed my life, the way i view myself and my art, i always wanted to play the pretty male roles like anthony from sweeney todd, but now i realize im not interested in the slightest way on anthony, i just thought that would be the easiest way to get casted into that show, but i actually would LOVE to play sweeney freaking todd. my college is doing rent next semester and for a long time ive been preparing my audition to play mark, because that would be an easy role to play, he has a ton of songs, he has a ton of stagetime, he is probably considered the main character, but you know what? mark booooooooores me, he is the least interesting character on that show, so now im thinking on what actually interests me, I WANT TO PLAY ANGEL, i love to dance, i want to kiss a guy on stage, ive always secretly wanted to be drag queen, im so excited, thanks so much kath for this video, i love u so much

Honestly, every role ever. I am a killer alto, my low range is so strong i sang tenor in choir and joined the boys choir at one point. But all the soprano parts in the musicals I've really thought about are so pretty and nice and gentle and just so attractive to me. I never liked the parts i knew i would get but kind of thought oh well, this is the best i can do, guess I'll just pretend this is what i want. But I'm starting to look at it differently and look at parts i could crush and seeing oh my gosh she has the best subplot and i want to show that range of emotion. Or just singing new music and completely falling in love because wow did you hear that tone, i need to play this onstage now! So thanks for this video, it kind of put the growth there in perspective.

I had this recently! I auditioned for Macbeth the other day and was saying to people that I would quite like to play a witch or I'd be happy to play any female, but realistically I just want to play Macbeth - I want bloody hands and to be completely psycho on stage 🤷🤷

I was in a production a few years ago that had a female Macbeth. She was the best actor for the roll and killed it. It was a college production so we didn’t have much push back with the LGTBQ aspect. The show was amazing

Ever since I discovered Ragtime the musical, I've wanted to be Sarah; she's such a strong deep character, she's within my vocal range, and according to my vocal coach, I sing a damn good Your Daddy's Son. But I am absolutely 100% certain, beyond a reasonable doubt, that I'll never play her in a show because I am not black. I am a Caucasian Latina, which is on the opposite spectrum. Same thing with the role of Effie White from Dreamgirls with the added problem that hers is not my vocal or physical range AT ALL (although I really just want to sing And I'm Telling You, but whatever). Your Daddy's Son is still in my audition repertoire cause it's a gorgeous song and I'm good at it.
