My local theater almost went bankrupt and was bought out by another local theater. Now everything is different, the people, the culture. It's been really confusing with the new influx of people, and the culture of the my favorite theater is gone. Do you have any advice?
@morgancloutier59085 жыл бұрын
Chespin907 if you need to go somewhere else to feel comfortable, don’t feel bad for leaving. This happened to my dance company a couple years ago. Find where the energy feels right, even if you have to drive a little further, or start all over, what should feel right is within you and you alone.
@chespin90785 жыл бұрын
I'd never leave. I love my theater and the remaining original people too much to leave. My theater is my second home.
@morgancloutier59085 жыл бұрын
Chespin907 I feel that. I had so many friends that stayed at that company. But for me it was best to see what else was out there to bring me more joy and make more connections and feel more comfortable to improve. You do what feels right to you.

I think I'm going to stay. I'm working on vocal technique and dance so that I can do more shows.
@harrietbowles11535 жыл бұрын
Oh boy I feel this. If possible, maybe look into other theaters? If that's not an option for whatever reason, I'll concede that things probably won't be how they used to before. But if you try focus on the art, the friends you still have, and the fact that you know based on past experience that theatre is not always like this, it might help you cope. Hope it all works out ❤

What I get from my vocal coach is that vocal vibrato is what happens when you have enough breath support and singing in a good position. I have developed a vibrato but usually in high notes and low notes but never the comfort zone and its been 8 months of training. It takes time to fully develop so don't get discouraged if you can't get it right away. Anyway, if you are doing vibrato correctly, you shouldn't be able to feel it. It should feel "effortless". Sometimes, you won't even hear it yourself. It's helpful to record your self while practicing and to get a vocal coach so they can help you with their own methods of developing vibrato. A good tip is to keep your chin parallel to the floor, breathe (deep breaths, in and out with your diaphragm), and make sure you are FULLY opening your mouth. The way you can imagine it is to open your mouth as much as Freddie Mercury does. Make sure your molars are raised. Keep the back of your neck tall ( I know this sounds weird but I totally recommend it). Keep your knees bent so that there isn't any tension in your body. If you feel tension in your neck, stop immediately and try lip trills. We all know that youtube is a great source so try some exercise with breathing and working your diaphragm. Trust me, it's not impossible but it is difficult. You just gotta..... WAIT FOR IT!

I need some advice. So, a while ago, our high school did a show. I was dead-set on getting a role. At the time, it was my absolute dream role. I researched for hours and hours about the show, wrote down character traits and did a deep character analysis, chose a perfect song and monologue, had an outfit picked out that was PERFECT for the character I was auditioning for, and practiced like crazy. I was so prepared for that audition. I was a sophomore at the time, and had done many plays before. Anyway, there was a senior who also wanted the same role as me. She was planning on using her solo from choir to audition, but found out the day of she was not allowed to do that, and ended up singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow (this was for Morticia btw), and her monologue from The Laramie Project, the show we were both currently in. I am confident I did well at my audition. I have strong vocals, and worked very hard on my monologue. For callbacks, it was only me and her. I believe I did well at callbacks too. She ended up getting the role, and I got a part in the chorus, as the Addams Family has a small main cast. My band director later told me that the director believed I did very well, but "you know, seniority matters in this situation." I was pretty broken up about it. i had worked so hard, and I lost my role due to seniority. In my school, all I hear is seniority seniority seniority, and it is driving me up the wall. The seniors even say that in the makeup room, they get to sit in the chairs, and the underclassmen have to sit on the floor. HOW do I deal with seniority in my school when it feels so hopeless?? Edit: I am actually going into my senior year now, but how do I deal with everyone else claiming seniority when I know it isn't right?

I have the same problem/am in the same boat. I’d say from own experience tell the youngest they’ll get their time and it’ll be soon! Say that You have been in the same boat you had the same problem and agree with them! Say you know i don’t fully agree, and also try not to be a jerk. I always find that the older years think they have “fans” and people love them or whatever and sometimes older years can be rude sometimes, younger years may be worried about this so make it your responsibility to be a good re model and just be a nice person :)

@fluffybuttons125 жыл бұрын
Queen Vicky to be in character more I typically write long character bios and use templates I find online to create them. Then I vividly before bed when I’m just kinda making scenarios up I do it using my character I’ve created, so for example part of a character bio I’ve done was “what was my immediate location” for a certain scene. It was a quiet coffee shop (obviously with more detail) so I imagined what would happen if there was a screaming child and how the character I’ve developed further would react. Would they get upset, continue on like nothing’s happening, talk trash, roll their eyes, leave... you get the idea. I find that typically helps me get into way more

make your priorities. personally i think school should always be number one and i’m sure your parents would think that too. sorry i sound old but haha always make sure you’re getting g enough sleep that helps with being able to balance everything and if you notice yourself getting super tired maybe try taking one less dance class this year. and i don’t know what your theatre teacher is like but if you’re super tired and really just need that one night to get yourself back into the game ask your teacher if you could get one night off because you’re worried you’re getting sick or just need a mental break. but always make sure you are doing your school work because even though theatre and dance are amazing you still want to make sure you get good grades because when you start looking at colleges they’ll want to see that you’re a hard worker and get good grades. they just want to see if you’re a good person. but like i said make your priorities and always make sure what you’re doing is good for you mentally and physically because truly you are number one. sorry that was long but i wish you the best love!

What's funny is that when I applied for my theatre master's last year, only 3 out of the 7 universities I applied to gave me an audition. Out of the 3, I went in person to 2 of them because the 3rd university asked for a 2 person scene instead. Living in the Caribbean, I couldn't ask my scene partner to spend $400 just to help me audition for 1 school, so instead I sent them a video of the audition scene. Long story short, the universities I went in-person to audition didn't even give me a callback and the university I sent the video to accepted me. I'm starting there this September. 😁😁😁😁😁😁 Based on this experience, I'm putting a bit more faith on video auditions.

Speaking from personal experience, I think that if you bring a friend to audition (whether it be to audition with you or to just be there for you) it makes the audition seem easier. I feel that it’s nice to be able to laugh after the audition and have fun. Sometimes it’s nice to have a familiar person with you to destress yourself and lower your nerves pre-audition.

Something to keep in mind when you come across an audition that allows live and video auditions. The casting director won't favor the live auditions over the video ones. A year ago I was behind the table at an audition for part of an internship and experience. The show needed 6 boys and that's how many came to the audition. The first boy that auditioned was great. We all agreed he had an excellent monologue and was able to get an emotion out of most of us there. But he did not get in. He didn't have any conflicts with the play but one other boy auditioned through video and got in. I asked the casting director why he chose that boy over the other. His reply was "he had emotion and character but he had blonde hair and the other one has brown" A year later I went to see a show put on by the same company and I saw the blonde boy as the lead. When I recognized him I got insanely happy that he was still performing and didn't quit. After the show I came up to him and congratulated him on the performance. We had a short conversation and I found out that he didn't even know that the hair color was the reason he didn't get in and he knew how many boys auditioned for the other play. I haven't seen him around since but I still remember that day of auditions and casting.

Hi! I have only been in a couple shows, but the few shows where I have had a part that was not ensemble, I have played the (kind of stupid), funny character who helps the villain. I have watched many videos of yours on how to get into character, and things like that to prepare for the show I am in, but I feel like it mostly only applies to characters who are more serious, and characters who are not frequently comedic. Could you do a video on how to prepare for characters like that? It would really help, especially since I do not have very much experience acting. Also, I know you are a soprano, and don’t usually belt, but I am an alto, but I can not belt, so if you could do a video on that too that would help as well.

Hello Cult leader!! I need advice. It may sound very very stupid and I’m not exactly sure how to say it. Plz don’t judge. So I stopped singing. For a couple months. For no particular reason. I just stopped, and Now I discovered an amazing new musical and and wanted to start singing again. Haha, that’s not going so well. See before I would be able to hit some semi-high notes, and I could just be able to preform a song without straining, and recently I tried singing and uh..well..to say the least..I sound like a dying cow. My throat tightens? And I start straining, and it’s just really quiet? I try sounding louder and it’s just not happening. I’m sorry I probably sound ridiculous. It’s just like I try singing and it’s not happening. I try hitting the high notes n my voice cracks and strains, and idk I just feel like I’ll never sound the same again and that’s singing voice sounds like shit now? Any advice?? TL/DR- I Stopped singing for months, tried to start singing again and voice isn’t what it used to be. (Straining, voice cracks, and quietness?) EDIT: I started singing again and it sounded a bit better 😆

Hey, I was wondering if anybody here had any advice for a certain Theatre Situation™️ I’m in- I’m in a production of “Rent”, and at the end of “La Vie Boheme B”, I’m supposed to be making out with somebody while singing, but I’m really scared because I’ve never done anything like that before. I know I can back out of it, but I don’t want to because I know I’ll get jealous of whoever takes my place if I do. Any help, Theatre Thursday Fam?

Question: how did u , or how to begin a career in theatre

I think you might have a video on this but I don’t know so sorry. But how do you choose between two characters for an audition if you can’t audition for multiple characters, because I have an audition for a new program and it’s for Frozen Jr. and I’m between Anna and Olaf. Thank you!

So.. acting is something I REALLY enjoy, but I'm not that great at it cause I'm so self conscious. If I get in the moment I love it, and I would love the challenge of a larger role, but I feel like someone like me is not what they're looking for. So how do I overcome the self consciousness I guess?

I have a killer resume built up over the years. But I can’t find a good theater. I’m not ready to go big yet and I can’t do voice lessons. What do you recommend theater Thursday cult members?

on an unrelated note let me just say I love your hair it’s freakin gorgeous, but I also have a question. I know that if you’re set about going into musical theater as a career you have to train, but how do u decide if that’s really what you want to do in life? like I’ve been dancing for 12 years and am about to start voice lessons and have been in all 3 high school shows available to me and I love it, but going down this road for a career is risky. how can you weigh the pros and cons? thanks!

Fun fact:There’s a 99.999999% chance that if you click on a Katherine Steele Video, you will see at least one “Last time I was this early” comment.

How does one get over being rejected from theatre school even when the feedback they gave you was good and they did not specify what needed to be worked on :/

So relate to the “too broke for theatre” question!! If I had it my way I’d watch a theatre show most of everyday, but yeah I am living that student life 🙃🙃🙃🙃

How does a transgender woman with a baritone-tenor voice audition and break into theater?
@scottstephen36975 жыл бұрын
Allison Corona There are several low vocal roles for females, and while they are few and far between they are out there. Not to be discouraging but ensemble is a great way to start since there are always alto lines in ensemble. My friend August is a transgender male who started in ensemble and recently played Jack in Into the Woods because of his higher register. Find the shows and roles that work for you. Hope this helps!

Hi theater cult friends! 🎭 So I’m in jr high (not currently because summer), and my school musical this up and coming school year is going to be Peter Pan. And I really want to be Peter Pan! I’ve done sum research, but it’s only July and auditions are in October. Should I be a total freak and figure out my audition song and keep researching?

Question: How do I prevent myself from being walked on/overlooked by cast mates and my director? I like to bake and bring in treats for my cast, but I feel like I'm only known as "the cookie girl" instead of what I can do as a performer. Any advice? Thanks ❤
