I deeply appreciate the fact that none of the Todoroki children have the same opinions and reactions to Endeavor, but all of them seem realistic and are something I'd expect from children of abusers. Fuyumi is desperately trying to grasp the smallest chance she has of having a normal and loving family, Shoto is not a fan of his father but is willing to see if he'll stick to his promise to be better, and Natsuo just doesn't have it in him to forgive Endeavor after everything he's done to his family. We also have someone else that is... a bit more extreme.

You ever have one of those nights where you have to ditch future plans to go to a beyond-awkward family dinner and then you get kidnapped after? Cause that's what happened here. On the subject of Endeavor though, Montana kinda hit the nail on the head for me. It’s clear that Endeavor is different now. It’s just… hard for me to care. He performed one basic act of atonement here and that’s all he can really do for now since it’s just too little too late for proper reparations to be made. All we can do is just move forward in our own ways.

Natsu hates Endeavour both the man and the hero, Endeavour worried that by being saved by the man and hero he already hates it would worsen their already fractured relationship. It goes to show how much Endeavour (who was a very matter of fact, focus on the job hero) has realised he’s messed up his family that much that even illogical reasoning has started to affect his actions

Endeavor hesitated to save Natsu during the fight, thinking, 'How can I save him when it would make him feel indebted to me, knowing he hates me?' He feared putting Natsu in a position where his hatred might be forced to fade, preferring that any change in feelings come naturally.

@@natsuotodoroki It's not too horrible given the situation. He had the students there and the villain wanted him specifically. He'd never normally let anyone else take over his capture even if the villain is targeting to provoke him specifically, but in theory, when he thinks about all the reasons he shouldn't back down even if the guy wants him to proceed (Is it a trap? Is the path he's taking full of civilians or should I keep him here? I can't let the students catch him before I do), he could've also thought "I shouldn't back down because that's Natsuo and that'd get him to forgive me" which immediately made him think of the reason he should stop, freezing him.

The circumstances were lined up so Endeavor could have frozen up and no big damage could’ve happened, but on account of the villain not even knowing about the students, it’s most or less just Endeavor getting super lucky. Also it definitely wouldn’t have taken him that long so consider things like “is it a trap” or “are there civilians,” especially considering that this is Endeavor of all people.

I'm not saying he froze up because it could be a trap, I'm sauing that while he quickly processed all the reasons of moving forward with no issue, the thought that froze him came up, and that's where he froze. Among those would be that he's training the students. After those, he'd think one reason is he has to stop him to be forgiven, and that's where he pauses to think about what that entails. He might've reacted sooner if there was no one else considering he did act sooner when the students weren't ready to help.

I can't even express how glad I was that Natsuo still held onto his grudge against Endeavor despite him saving his life. This would have been the easy way out, not only for him, but also the writers. This just goes to show that there are no shortcuts when it comes to forgiving a family member. My Hero Academia can be a goofy, over the top hero show sometimes, but also really takes its time to ground itself with some realistic drama like the results of an abusive household like the Todoroki family.

I will say, Enji didn't save Natsuo, he was lost in thought while Deku and the others did. But yes, I absolutely agree with you. Natsuo, despite his lack of screentime, might be one of the most realistic and well-written characters in the show. The writing can be amazing.

It’s definitely a great writing decision and gives an opportunity for most viewers to feel validated through one of the todoroki kids. Though some people really have to stop projecting their own family trauma onto the show cause their hatred and outrage isnt even about what the Todoroki family went through, it’s just them wanting to hold on to the grudge against their own abusers and condemning anyone who can resolve their own family issues for not having the “correct” response i.e. eternal bitterness

Yeah I think redemption is such an interesting concept, like what actions are considered irredeemable? is redemption ever fully accomplished? My heart breaks for poor Natsuo in this episode. He had plans and everything, but he had to come to a traumatizing family dinner, got unintentionally guilt-tripped for his perfectly reasonable feelings, and then got kidnapped and almost died several times. And then, Endeavor gave him another traumatic speech in the middle of the road before he could even catch his breath properly. A lot of people really like to praise Endeavor in this episode, but I think Natsuo's trauma is a bit glossed over by many. He's now both an abuse survivor and hostage survivor. Also another thing that isn’t mentioned nearly enough is how badly Endeavor handled this situation. Natsuo almost died because of Endeavor’s freezing up, and Endeavor straight up told him why he froze up to Natsuo’s face seconds after he was rescued while in the middle of the road. I know that last part was likely for dramatic effect, but it definitely doesn’t help Enji’s case of handling family situations badly. Luckily he managed to get in some atonement at the end, claiming he’ll stay away. However I will say, Enji’s promise to stay away at the end of this episode has definitely aged badly on account of how season 6 begins.

26:22 disagree. Bc Enji made this decision completely on his own, without the input of his family. I think it's clear that Enji did this with the belief that this would be the best for his family (not himself). At the same time, it kinda feels like taking the "easy" way out. Because while one might argue that this decision makes sense for Rei bc of her condition and Natsuo bc of his open resentment, Fuyumi, and to a lesser extent Shouto, might have actually preferred for Enji to stay close in order to atone. In my opinion, the right thing would have been to ask each of them first, and giving them the option and time to decide for themselves. But bc Enji already made the decision, I think that if any of them actually wanted him to stay close, they would have find it very difficult to ask him to do so. 35:46 also disagree. Natsuo very much cares that Enji is changing, bc he's visibly torn up about this. Natsuo feels hurt, bc he recognized Enji's sincerity and a part of him actually longs to forgive his father, but the anger, sadness (and possibly fear of just getting disappointed, if he were to "give in") still feels just too great - which makes Natsuo doubly mad, bc "Why do I have to feel any of these emotions?!" 36:27 and based on text and subtext, Natsuo's stance is not "you're change is too miniscule", but rather "the amount of your change doesn't matter, it is too late." That's the thought that Natsuo's holding on to. But if he didn't care, he wouldn't hold anger towards his father - he would just feel nothing towards him. And that's Horikoshi's beautifully nuanced writing for you.

I think that's a big misreading on Natsu ngl. No manga spoilers, but it's made pretty clear that he very much doesn't even want to forgive Enji. Him being torn here is more from the fact that he does feel like part of him should forgive Enji on account of everyone in the family and Deku's words, as well as Enji's sincerity, but he can't force himself to do it. The thing is that he doesn't care about Enji or forming a relationship with him, and his anger stems more from how the people around him have been treated. It’s not a matter of Natsu actively choosing to hold onto his anger, more so that letting go of it simply wouldn’t be something he could force himself to do.

Ok now we got a fight and it’s a good one. I had to make a 2 parter today. Let’s start with Ending. We gotta talk about SBC. It stands for ---- by Cop. (Today been fun thinking how to talk about this. Thanks KZbin rules) Throw in a side of Cotard’s Syndrome and you got Ending’s situation tied up pretty well. (Cotard’s syndrome means that a person has false beliefs that they or parts of them that don’t exist) There are literally people that will get into car chases with cops and act with a level of aggression to force the cops to consider more unethical methods. (These days it takes a lot less than what Ending does. Just pretend to be a falling acorn, that usually works. I wish I was kidding) And people that want SbC often are going for one last big adrenaline rush and…well. They want to go out in a blaze of glory. So this guy deciding to go after Endeavor makes total sense for this. He takes it a NUMBER of steps further and decides to take a page out of the Joker’s book. YUP. This guy is trying to be The Joker and break Batman’s moral code down. Not as personal and iconic by any stretch but we’re DEFINITELY reaching the crazy levels. His strategy? Hold Natsuo hostage and use civilians as examples. (Oh and he knew how to find Endeavor because looking him up is probably as simple as looking up your chief of police. Public officials still be public) Bakugo, Todoroki, and Deku have been listening VERY carefully and taken the lessons Endeavor has given them to heart. Condense and fire, precision shots, parallel processing. Do it until it’s 2nd nature before making things more complicated. Bakugo condenses and Shoto uses precision and Deku…does one of the single most complicated student moves in the entire show up to this point. Bakugo prioritizes the competition both All-Might AND Endeavor gave him. And he goes for the All-Might one of course and goes for Natsuo. Shoto switches a LOT faster and instead of filling the streets makes far more precise shots to capture Ending with the least amount of street damage he can manage. And…ok. I hold this on par with Yoarashi’s incredible whirlwind moves for what Deku does. (I know how crazy the whirlwinds are, but he had unspecified prep time and had the moves last a lot longer to organize what he wanted to do. Deku had NO prep time) He jumps in the air at a controlled height, brings out Blackwhip and catches 3 cars in COMPLETELY different locations in the air, rotates them all upright and lands them all on the ground safely…in the time it took him to go up in the air and land. So Blackwhip has its language that went haywire and it’s like he’s talking to the power whenever he’s using it in a different new language. This is like 2 weeks tops from when he 1st triggered it against Monoma and Shinso. Deku said he wasn’t going to fear it, and he said that man made me feel like I can do ANYTHING. And BOY does Deku just get COUNTLESS genius points for what he just did. And the reason they got to do it is…complicated. Endeavor ironically froze as he tried to stop Ending when Natsuo was getting whipped around. And as his hero work and family work have been held separate, this is probably the 1st time Endeavor’s hero instincts were overwritten by his family instincts. And what’s in place of that? Who knows. He knows how to be a hero a THOUSAND FOLD better than how to be a dad and it REALLY bit him when the paternal instincts kicked in. He’s so panicked he hugged Bakugo unironically too! (Bakugo is most pleased) Endeavor WANTS to have a relationship with Natsuo even if he’s always angry at him because it’s what he deserves. And he felt like saving his life would complicate his feelings and not direct what he’s entitled to feel. (Just remember Endeavor is a WEE bit of an emotional dunce and is not practiced) Natsuo is clearly hurt by what Deku said to Shoto about moving forward and accepting Endeavor forgiveness being present or no because he’s FAR from ready. And Endeavor at the very least knows how the heck CAN he be forgiven and even takes responsibility to the core of what occurred to Touya. But that doesn’t mean he can’t do what is best for his family. They are healing, recovering, and mending their relationships WITHOUT him. And he sees that and doesn’t want to hinder their progress by enforcing himself back into the family that’s not ready for him. They accept him as they choose and might not even at all. He wants them to have a place to recover and have a home. But their home is the place everything went to hell. They need to be safer. This is SUCH a sad decision. Endeavor accepts the grudges, the pain he’s caused, and everything with it. And just end off on some feel good. Bakugo has decided on his hero name! And he announces….to refusing to let Deku be positive about winning the fight with no issues at all, and telling him he’s never going to know in the most aggressive way he can for simply asking what his hero name is. Not to worry he’s not letting Shoto know either! Hey what are codenames anyway. If my real name is John Doe and I chose a public stage name, I’d want NO ONE TO USE IT too. (He needs to run it by someone 1st. But still. Be LESS of a jerk for getting EVERYTHING YOU WANTED in this match)

Endeavor’s story is just so sad. I really hope he gets a happy ending. I can’t help but empathize with his character. Especially since we know he’s seen the error in his ways and genuinely changed as a person. It really is sad how often times the damage done is always at least partially irreversible, no matter how much work you put into it. I think the best possible ending is the family eventually accepting endeavor and him continuing to demonstrate he’s changed.

I thought Endeavor froze because if he saved Natsuo, then Natsuo would be angrier because he would hate to be saved by the person he abhors and blames for everything. Forcing the rift to grow larger and he would stop speaking to him entirely, even if it was out of anger. Like when at the dinner he angrily called out Endeavor for his past actions, Endeavor was probably thinking "hey at least he spoke to me" Had he saved him he felt like he would lose him further, but had he done nothing he would've lost him period. So Endeavor, for the first time in his life, was frozen. He was stuck between losing Natsuo metaphorically and realistically. Sure it doesn't make sense to a sane person, they would obviously save their child from a maniac, but as we know Endeavour is not exactly in the right state of mind.

I think the "if i saved you, you would never talk to me again." Means that Natsuo would have hated it even more if the Guy who destroyed his Family was the one who saved him. That he would feel so disgusted that he never spoke to him again.

I think Natsuo is so angry because he does want to show up for his family and contribute to a happy relationship - but this means Endeavor will get what he has recently wanted the most - to atone for his sins, and Natsuo doesn’t believe he’s earned that chance yet. He is most likely able to put aside his past emotions and feelings - he just feels it isn’t right from a logical sense to do it so quickly. He WANTS to forgive Endeavor and be able to move on from his trauma - but he keeps remembering that he DID have a hard life growing up, and shouldn’t owe anyone anything. It’s all about give and take - Endeavor has taken so much and now that he is instead ASKING for more, it doesn’t matter since Natsuo still has been giving him everything basically his whole life.

Alright! This is a weird episode to be excited about in this show. A culmination of what EVERYONE has managed to learn in this season comes together really nicely. With a side of someone…that wants SBC. Well…we’ll get to that lovely person. Have to make a 2-parter as long as a 1 part for some of the complex subjects. So we start off on a flashback to several years ago. Endeavor fruitlessly devoting himself to surpassing All-Might. And since we’re talking several years ago, I’m going to assume it’s before All-Might got injured 6 years ago. It couldn’t be right after because we don’t know how long All-Might was off the field after the 1st fight with AFO. Even though once he was back DESPITE his injury he’s so ludicrously strong no one could tell he was slower, appearing on a 3 hour time limit, or…having his injury looking the way it does and how much he lost to it. That and considering Ending’s whole goal, I DOUBT it was a short charge that got him in prison. (Go figure! It was 7 years! Hadn’t finished the episode when I wrote this) Endeavor is so 1000% butt hurt about being #2 at this point that this villain is inspired to force Endeavor into giving in and taking the same force on him that he used on the High End Nomu Hood. And after things didn’t go his way, he’s out to do it again. Fuyumi sits down Bakugo and Deku and brings up despite EVERYTHING we’ve seen in the Todoroki family, there’s something even DARKER at the pit of the entire circumstance. And that is Touya Todoroki. Endeavor knelt before an alter in the house of his eldest son last episode. And he looks YOUNG. And it’s CLEAR what happened Natsuo holds Endeavor as fully responsible and the others are not disagreeing but have other complications and takes. There’s been neglect, abuse, and just absolute emotional hell at the pit of this family but for that to not even be the WORST we’ve seen in comparison to Touya. Natsuo when he shouts about it literally can’t even bring himself to say what HAPPENED. Fuyumi and Shoto who as open as they ARE about it can’t say it either. And Endeavor….understandably decides to end the dinner outing there. He’s pretty gentle about it all things considered, so I don’t view this as a “don’t poke your nose in this.” More of a time, place, and honestly if it’s not Shoto talking about it to Deku and Bakugo as his classmates, Fuyumi shouldn’t either. You need the EXACT right people to talk about the EXACT right circumstances for such a conversation for a full disclosure of such a topic. (Not that Deku and Bakugo wouldn’t be trusted with such info considering what they know already) But the fact it has ALL of them acting so out of it, it just far exceeds what we know. And that is SAYING something. Ok. This episode is INCREDIBLY sad and scary and just overall every terrifying emotion this show is known for. But MAN when it decides to be funny I am on the floor. Bakugo demanding Fuyumi’s recipes is nothing short of hysterical. Bakugo had A BAD day and a BAD time at this dinner and he just did NOT want to leave without knowing how she cooked. This is probably one of Bakugo’s most positive moments. He has a tone when he’s invested in something and for him to be insistent to Fuyumi about getting her tofu recipe had me on the ground. Sound LESS thrilled about something you undeniably loved, Bakugo. I don’t think this is even the only joke made about how much Bakugo loved the food at the Todoroki’s. And not only to have a genuine Bakugo is listening or invested moment, but for it to come with a new character that is MORE AGGRESSIVE THAN BAKUGO. This guy just rivaled what Camie did with Bakugo. She got him to laugh completely unguarded and is the only one to do so and it has not been replicated. And this guy shouts back at Bakugo’s whining about Endeavor’s car to the point Bakugo short circuited and actually shut up, THEN this guy repeatedly calls Bakugo names for the rest of the episode. Bakugo does NOTHING. Katsuki MATCHES Mitsuki Bakugo in aggression, this guy SURPASSES them. That is a LEGENDARY power play. And he’s Endeavors chauffeur. Amazing. (Also nice to see Deku actually getting credit for his efforts to help Shoto. It’s been needed since it literally snowballed the entire family’s healing process) Side note: Zounds is surprise or indignation. We got both. It’s a word you see and think to yourself that can’t POSSIBLY be a word. I have ONLY seen that word in the old comic strip Calvin and Hobbes so it just stuck out to me when I heard it.

You're correct about Bakugo and Fuyumi. It's genuinely wholesome for him to admire her cooking to the point of wanting to replicate it, and this is NOT the only time it comes up. Also, yeah. Endeavor's driver is a RIOT. Where was this guy at the whole arc?

Overall "Keeping up with the Todorokis" is one of the better written plot lines in Mha. The only problem is that it feels wierd how little consequences Endeavor faces though. Like aside from his family not liking him nobody else seems to care. Bakugo and Deku are very invested in Shotos growth and rehabilitation but dont seem to think of Endeavor as a bad person. Idk kind of feels like accidental social comentary where as long as dude is famous enough and competent at his job he can succesfully hide away his broken family.

Regarding the comment about no one thinking that people have some right to choose how they end, you are quite incorrect, that is a very common sentiment. One I happen to share. There are many different situations where forcing someone to continue to live against their wishes is nothing less than an act of barbaric and often selfish cruelty. Even outside of such circumstances, I might not want to die, but if death is clawing at me anyway, going out on my own terms is very likely to be both more comfortable and dignified than the alternative. Of course, the primary limitation on this right is that it is a choice that absolutely must be made while in a fully rational state of mind. This particular villain certainly doesn't meet that requirement, and the same goes for most people suffering from depression... and even if rationality wasn't an issue here, a right to choose a death doesn't mean a right to force others to kill you... The idea is particularly prevalent in the context of themes of heroism and self sacrifice. In both stories and real life, people choose to die in order that others may live. I do apologize for the somewhat morbid topic. I have quite enjoyed your takes on my favorite anime series.

I think 'somehow' in Fuyumi's line about Rei condition was a translation thing and weird word choice. Manga translation was different, actually. Unfortunately there are lot little things like this that just lost/misinterpreted in the translation

I like to mention that Deku was able to say Bakugo and not Kacchan. Like he can say Kacchan, just chooses not too and Bakugo just lets him. It's really cute. When Endeavor said he was making a new house for his family to live in and he'll stay behind, it makes me sad. Natsuo is right to me mad because he has so many bad memories of Endeavor and when you see them, they're really scary. Like Endeavor said, Fuyumi is trying so hard to have a happy family and her father not being there hit me because my parents spilt after my dad cheated multiple times. So my mom only talks negatively about him, but I still love my dad despite the times he hurt her and us. JOKE. JOKE. JOKE. XD. I love whenever Deku uses Blackwhip. You'll have fun seeing him use this now in the future and the third movie.

I never noticed it before now, but Natsuo bailed on his girlfriend so he could have dinner with Fuyumi and Shoto. He might not have known Endeavor was gonna be there. I would be pretty pissed as a teen too if I bailed on a girl and found out it was all for the sake of my abusive dad. That may explain SOME of the harshness of his reaction to Endeavor in the moment (although even under ideal circumstances his reaction does make sense)

His whole family came together to help him after Toya comes back from the dead and his response is to leave without even explaining himself.
