I hope this puts your mind at ease a little Alanna. My wife and I have just been through the renewal process and we received confirmation of a successful application less than a week after she did her biometrics. Her new BRP arrived by special delivery about 3 days later, so a quick turnaround. Anyway, very best of luck; I'm sure it will work out well.

Oh man Alana! I completely understand your urge to cry. Former American, German citizen here. I went through all phases of being an ex-pat, with the varying levels of duration and freedom until I got my „Niederlassungserlaubnis“ which is the German equivalent to ILR, then a whole bunch of years after that and I took the plunge and became a citizen. That was ten years ago: just got my second German passport and, ID card this year. While I did have a few interesting episodes in the foreigners office, I never had to suffer through anything remotely close to the stress and expense that you are dealing with…. and certainly not for the first time either. It will be a travesty if the British bureaucrats don’t swiftly approve your visa renewal. You are a wonderful promoter of life in the UK.

What’s funny is that I’m British living in the USA and it was so much worse than this trying to move here. It took a year just to get my first visa and if I hadn’t found a lawyer to help me stay while my application was processed, I would have had to live apart that whole time. We are now planning to move to England and everything is so much less stressful as far as the visa is concerned.

When I was doing an ILR visa application for my wife I had sent the visa application to their office with plenty of time to spare. Then late on a Friday I got an email from the home office saying that they haven't had my paperwork and I needed to make sure that they had everything by the following Friday. I had sent the documents by recorded delivery so luckily had proof from the Post office that the documents had been signed for by the home office visa centre. After I informed them of this on the Monday they called me back a couple of hours later to say that they had found my documents. That was a really stressful event. I hope Alanna that you never have to deal with anything like that. I wish you the best of luck with your visa application.

If the worst happens and you haven't heard about your visa as your Canada flight date approaches, get in contact with the airline and explain the situation. Make it clear that you're not looking for any refund and that you just need to reschedule. Most airlines will be understanding about it and let you change the dates though they may charge you an admin fee for it. I've known that to be as much as £500 but it's still better than losing the ticket entirely. Best of luck with the renewal...My heart bleeds for you as a fellow anxiety-ridden mess!!!

Please don't worry, Alanna, these things can be daunting but you have a lot going in your favour, this is far from your first one and the Home Office will be able to see that and that it is in fact a continuation of your working life in the U.K. this should speed things up considerably. The reason why they need to see your bank statements is to check for any possible criminal activity such as money laundering, eventhough you might find this possibility embarrassing it's for legitimate reasons. I totally sympathise. I have had to fill in my partner's application for PIP (Personal Independence Payment) as she is disabled. There were tons of questions. I did the same as you in essence but written out by hand. I roughed out then perfected all my answers before committing them to paper, making sure everything was in there, and accurately reflected my partner's situation. These things are so important. I had to envisage someone (let's call them the enemy) receiving the application and going through it line by line to pick out any flaws or omissions, so they could turn it down. It's a horrible process. It took me several weeks and I hated every minute of it. Still waiting for the outcome. Good luck with your application.

Word of warning, if something is not mentioned on both the form and in the interview they may decide not to count it towards the claim (because you're clearly trying to scam them 🙄). My brother has memory issues and forgot to put something on the form which he later remembered in the interview and they wouldn't allow it. He also got docked points for passing his driving test... PIP is an absolute joke (especially when he had indefinite DLA), but I hope that your partner's application goes smoothly. 🤞

Hey there. My wife and I had the pleasure of going through this process (I’m a British Citizen and can confirm marrying me does not mean squat for your residency in this country!) we got through it and my wife now has ILR. The visa process was exhausting with hiccups left, right and centre. But if you’ve completed the application and spelt everything out for them you will be fine. I would also recommend using the fast track service if it’s available when you next go through this process. We applied in 2022 and it was still available if you stayed up until very late to book it. It cost £800 though so I would only use it if you have to leave the country soonish after. Also one other point: when you renew your visa you also have to get your BRP changed as well. When we got approval they said it could take up to 7 working days to come through in the post so as timings are tight for you I thought I would mention it.

Oh Alanna - this is so hard. I remember your last application process. Hopefully something more permanent will be possible soon. For context, the most intimidating experience I've had was the US process - having to return to London to get updated work permits at the embassy and the whole permanent residency process was crazy expensive. But by far the most complicated was Canada - because we had to get approval from Quebec, from the Canadian Government and from the Canadian Border services, all of whom have different regulations that they change every couple of months on average (like - oh yeh, as of two weeks ago you can't submit in English, it now needs to be all in French) so right up until the moment you submit you have to check whether one of the three has changed a regulation. But thank god for Service Canada who were always amazing - the UK needs something similar!

Hi Alanna, thanks for another excellent video. I hope all goes well with your UK visa renewal. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers that all will work out and you will be able to still fly to Canada in time. Anyway, take care. Rob in Melbourne Australia.

You sure have my sympathy and all digits crossed for you. In 2003 I traveled to India. My passport, with the Indian visa pasted inside, arrived back from The Indian consulate 4 hours before we headed to the airport! OMG 🤪

Hi Alanna. I can understand your anxiety and why everything in this country has to be so complicated when dealing with official anything connected to using the civil service is beyond me. It may also explain why we now have a deficit of foreign labour. I hope everything goes smoothly for you. I don't know about visas but even applying for some specialist licences or criminal record checks involved in my case, supplying original documents. I have in the past had to supply birth and marriage certificates as well as bills, bank statements etc and there is also the fear of them getting lost, so I do sympathise. This should become easier to do as we progress as a society not get harder and if we need people to fill vacancies they should not be penalised with additional high cost application bills.

Alanna, you’ve done everything right. At the end of the day your family and Canada will always be there. The important thing is that we get a positive result with your visa. I’ve had to deal with tough stuff like this myself very recently. You start the journey and get to the destination. Just remember that, you will get there.

Alanna, never have any sort of liquid or food near your passport as accidents can happen, especially when stressed! As soon as you've finished with it file it away safe.

We all wish the best for you. Looking forward to hearing more. If only a petition could make you eligible for citizenship. You would get a lot of sponsors.

You can't make someone eligible for citizenship through a petition 😆 Eligibility comes from length of stay and not breaking any of the visa requirements. The first step is indefinite leave to remain, which she's also not eligible for yet.

I only wish I could be there to give you a big hug and tell you it's all going to be OK. If it's any consolation my wife and I applied for a six month visa to visit our own house in France last year and met with very similar obstacles. We've only owned the house over there for twenty years and we still had to provide separate bank statements to prove we could afford to stay there even though it's a joint account! Well, courage young lady! Know that we are all with you in spirit if not in person. You can do it!

If the unthinkable happened you'd have enough followers to overwhelm the Home Office and force your renewal through with 150,000+ signatured petition. We couldn't lose a treasure like you without some sort of fight. I just love your cooking vids. So histerical.😜 PS. I've got everything crossed for you. Good luck Ol' Bean.

I’m so sorry that you have to go through all this hassle. I’ve lived and worked in seven different countries, and I’ve never had so much trouble. But I think countries have generally been tightening up, and the UK in particular seems to be uptight about immigration these days. When I came to Spain in 1997 I was an EU citizen, with a right to live and work here, so the residence permit was a formality, granted automatically. Then Brexit came along and Spain fortunately decided to accept any residence permits already granted; I think it’s more difficult for Brits who want to come to Spain now.

Fingers crossed for ya alanna don't fret everything will be fine ,the only reason it takes so long for some is they don't fill in the form properly or don't send the all the documents or whatever, now i'm betting you have sent everything they need and that's what they like , breathe ,it'll be fine.

Wow that is a lot of money for a bit of paperwork, hang in there Alanna and don't let them grind you down 🙂.I thought renewing my passport was a pain but its a walk in the park compared to what you have to do! At the end of the day we're all the same species living on the same planet, we should be able to live wherever we want within reasonable limits.

We can have open borders or we can have a welfare state. The two are incompatible unless all countries have the same arrangements which is obviously impossible.
