As a US seller, I have to wonder if the time/effort is worth it. IMO it would eat into the margin and I'd probably be better off devoting that time to higher productivity with better returns. A discussion and/or deep dive on assessing the pros and cons would be useful. It would seem it adds effort and time to getting the product out the door, higher maintenance once shipped (updates/problems). I can see that what you sell and who your buyer is can shift this considerably, but not a black and white decision in my book.

I am shipping internationally from Europe and 40% my clients are from the US. Despite being one of the richest countries in the world, US Postal System is one of the worst with extremely high rate of lost parcels. SIX out of my 8 parcels sent in May have been lost and I am in touch with a handful of sellers experiencing the same issue with USPS. If you have a chance, use UPS, Fedex or DHL. USPS is rubbish!

Ups and fedex have started selling routes to anyone that wants to buy them. That has made dealing with their customer service an absolute nightmare. DHL is the most dependable, but the most expensive, so a lot of POD providers don’t use them. Most of my usps problems involve them delivering to the wrong address. Problem is they don’t pay workers enough to do their jobs properly and can’t fire them because of unions or litigation threats. It’s ridiculous.

Hi Nik. Thanks for this. My issue about shipping internationally has to do with customs and tariffs. I've reread the Etsy instructions several times and I'm still very hesitant. Can you do a video about this? Thanks

I have shipped all over the world, BUT watch out if you buy labels via Etsy, we recently shipped a rather large order worth £288 to Madrid 23 personalised items for a large company over there, the trouble was we purchased the label via Etsy, only the day after I thought I wonder what the insurance cover was on the order, only to find out that instead of it being covered for all 23 items Etsy only gives Evri shipping the information for 1 single item, meaning we only have cover for £11,99 plus the shipping cost, as yet we are hoping the item gets to its destination or this will cost us a lot of money. as yet not delivered but we live in hope. SO WATCH WHAT YOU SHIP AND MAKE SURE IT'S COVERED!

I just had my first sale on Etsy. Sent it to the US from the UK yesterday. Hope it gets there and they like it! Jeweller my is hard because it is not covered by Royal Mail compensation if it is list unless you charge a fortune for postage.

Hi there, thanks for your comment. Yes, I hear you, however when we used to send parcels from a remote Greek island to the US a very small number of parcels got lost.

I am in Europe and I shipp all over the world. In one of my shops I have orders from Brazil, Dubai, Australia, UK, Canada and mostly USA. The cost of shipping in USA is 3.75, the rest 10.48 and the item 18 dollars and they still buy it even with that prize of shipping

Yes, this video really helped me! I’ve been thinking about opening up my shop for international shipping but have been scared/apprehensive due to not wanting to encounter customers issues, but like you said, it’s the price of doing business. Your video gave me the push I need to just try it. If I find it to be too much hassle, I can always turn it off. I am in the US. I think I will start with Canada first!! Thank you!

Thanks for this - it helped me decide to go broader. I've been concerned about the refund requirement in Europe but, as you say, the majority of orders will be fine and it's worth the few losses to get more sales. I had set my shop to U.S. only, but somehow, I got a sale in Canada and recently one in the UK. The UK one was sort of an issue, because the buyer didn't like the size of the mug (too big!) and the font looked different than what she'd expected. Not my fault, but I bit the bullet and made her a smaller version with a different font & sent it for free. I'm out $25, but that's the cost of doing business, and I'm hoping for a better review from her.

I was so scared to ship. Local and international. Because the Etsy ship options are very expensive (I sell sticker sheets). I packed my items as if a customer purchased a medium sized order and went to the post office and asked them what shipping was to the furthest location in my country, the furthest location in the USA, to London, and a few other major cities around the world. I asked them what it would cost with no tracking and with tracking. I made my shipping options accordingly. Now I’ve only had 30 orders but I have had one customer ask where is the package ( asked them to wait for an extra day and if it didn’t arrive I would resend it) and I have had a a customer not receive it at all (I resent it and added signature required). So I think that your assessment is spot on. I’m looking to start adding larger items to my shop or my other digital only shop.

One of my main issues with shipping internationally is that Etsy calculates fees based on total order price, i.e. listing + shipping price. I'm based in Europe (NL) and most of my sellers are from the US. Cheapest shipping option I could find is 14 euro, the product I was selling at 12 euro. Because of this distribution where the majority of the price is shipping costs, Etsy calculates 7.39 euro in fees (4.05 of that being offsite ads fee, which you can't turn off as EU), leaving me with a "profit" margin of about 1 euro which is unsustainable. I tried promoting bigger orders by offering discounts when ordering multiple items but most of my buyers only want a single product. Note that I fully understand that Etsy has to include shipping price in their fee calculation to avoid abuse and I don't want to rant about the fees being too high, but I do wonder if there is some way to make this sustainable.

I sell from England, most my sales are within the UK and to USA, don't get many from Main land Europe, Canada or Australia. The only problems i get is the US side of shipping with delays or lost parcels, doesn't matter who i use they are terrible. But still worth it

Thank you for your video! I heard that Etsy sellers complaining about shipping to France or Germany because there’s obligation to pay for packaging recycle etc., but if you want to build your business, you need to accept rules and guidelines! 40% from my clients are from France and Germany 😊

I never experienced any problems shipping my tin cans Internationally, literally workdwide. I sent them tracked and signed for too. Yes expensive for the buyer however that's their expense not mine. No one ever complained about lost or delayed packages. One person complained about the expense. I courteously said I didnt have any jurisdiction over Royal Mail prices 🤷🏿‍♀️

UK seller & shipped Internationally since the minute I opened, 10 years ago. It used to be easy & I would have encouraged others to go for it. Not any more. EU is an issue now as Nik said & I'll likely have to stop selling there due to packaging laws & GPSR (which Etsy refuse to engage with) That's a huge chunk of income lost; Customers are being charged VAT twice then (understandably) complaining to me despite me having followed Etsy's instructions & provided correct documentation. To top it off, 11 days is the longest I can set for international shipping due to Etsy removing my ability to set my own shipping times & I know from experience this is far too short, especially at busy times (Royal Mail's estimate this Christmas is 24 days) but Etsy will refund 'late' orders out of my account. "On time delivery or your money back" I don't know if I can do this any more

Hi Nik, I found you just before I launch my Etsy store last year. I was going to just ship domestically, but I follow your advice and ship internationally, I’m glad I did, I have quite a bit of order coming from US and Europe. My question is, how is the GPSR will be affecting sellers outside EU, is that mean we need to exclude EU if we can’t afford to have EU representative? Thanks Nik.

Am I right in thinking that if you buy shipping through Etsy untracked and the parcel gets lost, that you still get paid and the customer gets refunded by Etsy? We currently send international orders tracked & signed via royal mail and that’s what happens if a parcel is lost, but if you can send send via Etsy not tracked and you’re still covered it works out about £5 cheaper

I have a question about the orders that were never delivered or status was delivered but the customer claim they never received it (it was in UK) In that case I used to send another item or refund the customer out of my pocket. Should i let the Etsy refund the customer? Or will Etsy refund it from my account anyway? Can someone help me understand what is the best/correct way? Thanks
