It's crazy to think that after only having done one that you can have a viable side business like that. I'm surprised he didn't give that face when he found out what the business would be. I've lived in Olympia and the water is extremely cold and there aren't any real waves. Even if he did have more experience, I can't imagine there being a large enough market for it there. Perhaps folks who broke their board at the end of their vacation and didn't get it repaired before returning home, but wasn't so damaged that it needed to be thrown out.

I suspect Dave OK'd it because the caller didn't mention anything he'd need to buy to repair the surfboards. This is the information I was personally seeking, but unfortunately the answer isn't here. Maybe in another call video.

I think if you can work an extra sideline plus your full-time job then do it. After that start planning how to save money little by little. But first, you need to prepare yourself for the change. Embrace the change and look forward to starting a new life. Since then, I lived a better life than ever.

I am in that same boat myself. Starting to do a Videographery business and trying to pay off debt. Such a learning curve with tech and classes, thank goodness my job offers overtime and beginging to start a 2nd job but debating on changing jobs cause my current job is only going to offer a 1% raise while if I am a baggage handler or flight attendent I could be making much more money however it would mean giving up having weekends off which is important in my business.

I think it really depends on the type of business you’re starting. I’m a braider and I started out with a pack of combs from Sally’s and a pack of clips. It only costed me about $5. My daughters were my models and it brought me a lot of business. Actually, one of my daughters all of a sudden had people coming to the house with hair after I got off from work on Saturdays. I didn’t even know what was going on but I didn’t turn anyone away because I felt bad about the situation. I was sort of bullied by my daughter into braiding other people’s hair. 🤷🏾♀️ Now she’s a braider!

No surf shops in Olympia. 1 in Shelton and only one on the coast in Long Beach. People don't really surf in Long Beach or off the Washington coast. I grew up there and people fly kites and ride horses. Ohh and the coast is 90 minutes to 2 hours away If he lived on the coast, he could walk around and repair kites in the beach and charge a small fee but that would only be from spring to September

There isn't, there's some wind surfing that goes on, but even that is not a huge thing. Perhaps out on the peninsula, but I never saw or heard of people surfing when I lived in Olympia.

@@TravelingNatural keep expenses low, never take the mindset that word of mouth will work, and learn skills outside of your practice area. People who rely on word-of-mouth advertisement without a serious promotional or social media campaign are hoping someone will pour food into their trough. It's very much an employee mindset. I came to work and I'm trying hard so people should patronize me. As for secondary skills, learning how to build a basic website, learning basic accounting, learning marketing, and learning how to organize is far more important than most realize. Most importantly, remember that you are a business owner first and a professional second. Many people in my profession make the mistake of assuming the best law firms are run by the bestest lawyers ever when in reality they're run by the best business people who happened to be lawyers. Assuming being the best at your chosen profession is the key to running a successful business is a great way to become a starving artist as it were.

Contact a real estate attorney or contract attorney. Someone can’t force debt onto you through a divorce settlement, the only two parties liable in a divorce settlement are the husband and wife/husband & husband/wife and wife. Children are excluded because no contractual agreement was made through the children and parent.

It is the worst idea to start a business from scratch to pay off debt. To pay off debt, you need to be at your best when you are working at your day job, which pays you a steady and consistent income. If you have a hobby that organically turns into a business because you can connect to the demand and you get steady business, only then can it become a real thing. But it is much more likely that the business will not be able to meet your expectations within a short time span, and you will not only be stuck with your current income (because of no profit when just starting out) but it puts your day job at risk because your personal focus is elsewhere. You should be out of personal debt before you start a business, because you need to be focused on one thing, and you need to not be putting your current employment at risk (especially if your business is expected to start replacing your current job). Also, if you need special tools or equipment, or if your business consumes items, then it is actually a drain on your finances until it generates much more revenue and is able to offset those costs and become profitable.
@SmallSpoonBrigade5 жыл бұрын
Depends what the business is. If it's something like tutoring or perhaps light gardening with minimal capital expenditure it can work. But, even there the time and money spent on advertising can easily put you in debt rather than get you out of it.
