Most people can start with a good push mower weed eater and a leaf lower. I bought a toro push mower from Tractor supply for $500, Poulan pro leaf blower from tractor supply for $99 and a Husqvarna weedeater from a dealership for $300. Say trimmer line, gas cans, gas and oil for $100 total. I already had a pick up truck. About 1000 bucks is a good start. The hardest part (which really isn't hard) is going out and looking for yards. I did ol fashioned door to door and it seemed to work well. Just don't get discouraged when they say "no, I don't need you to cut my lawn." All of this extra stuff in the vid is great. But I would advise starting off on your own 1st.
@rjskum6883 жыл бұрын
Make sure what ever brand you buy can be services locally. So if you buy a toro mower, make sure there is a toro dealer nearby that can service it when something breaks down or goes wrong.

@BeeDedicated3 жыл бұрын
Keith Kalfas, I listened to your book as well as Mike's. I started in lawn care, or more specifically, mowing, as an 8 year old. By the time I was 18, I had to choose between playing ball in college or pursuing my 6 figure business in a less than ideal market. I left the business behind. Fast forward 19 years and this past spring, I'm standing on my lawn when one of the three biggest names in my current city drove by and stopped. He got out and said, "man, I don't know what you know, but this is the best lawn by far in the entire area." Exactly one day later, another of the big 3 stopped and said, "how the hell do you do that?" Finally, two weeks later, the third pulls up, gets out and said, "do you mind if I walk on it?" Of course I said "go right ahead". He took his boots and socks off and walked around for 5 minutes. At that point, I went to "80% go". I own 4 other businesses, so I am no stranger to systems, procedures and time management. After some calculation, I began structuring my business. I added 134 accounts within the first month and expanded my services slightly. I now have an additional 300 on the books for fall and spring service. So, I can't say exactly how motivational the shade tree conversation in your book was, or Mike's book was for that matter because I was committed before I listened, but you guys were a confidence booster, and I appreciate you for that.

Thing with starting up this type of business is that all you need you already have. Chances are you have a lawnmower and a truck, or at least a car. Bring along that and a few rakes and your golden.

What Mike does isn't for everybody. What I've done to improve myself in my business is to take the ideas or little tricks or different methods of doing things paying attention to the small details of how stuff to organize being the trailer everything is about saving time which saves money and applying that to your business. Your business does not have to be Augusta for you to be happy and successful

I bought a Stihl blower for 500, a used Honda 21 for like 300, a new weed eater for about 275, and started selling cleanups on the side, I used the money I made to buy everything else. Then with my paychecks from my job I would buy tools for the job I was going to do next and charge a little higher to make sure my tools bought themselves more or less and now I have everything I need to go solo.

Essentially what Mike is doing is taking the idea for what McDonald's has done to the food service industry and applying it to Landscaping. Making things simple less-skilled less personal which in terms will increase profit but it's a customer service industry and for me there's nothing better than at the end of the day when you trim this little old ladies bushes and and she was so nervous cuz she had the same guy doing her bushes for 30 years and then you come in and do it better and she's just so happy you made her year by making her yard look better that's what it's about. And of course making some money. I'm in no way trying to hate on Mike because he does on for a lot of good advice and does want others to succeed which is commendable and I respect him for that but if you're just starting out your business doesn't have to be Augusta for you to be very successful and happy

any successful business has a plan, work rules, a brand that must be defended, promoted and numerous other things newbies don't even know yet. buying into a franchise gives you all that, and ready customers calling because they recognize the brand for quality, on time delivery, price etc. "do the homework", know the brand before you drop any coin. you do not want to buy a franchise based on price alone. McDonalds is a real estate firm disguised as a hamburger joint. they have crews that go out and find the best RE in town (rising value) before they award a franchise. a burger joint on every block that someone can buy and hang a shingle on. two very different business models and if all goes as planned different outcomes.
