I feel like people forget that when all the grim fairytales were created about listening to your parents and not going wandering in the woods, it was a time when going into the woods could literally end with you being eaten by a predator. It wasn't a good time for small children to be adventurous.

The singing at 21:00 is called kulning, and is a traditional cattle call. It can be heard for miles and miles! Perfect for when the animals are out in the forests and hills during summertime - on the fäbodvall :) (ah, and just as I finished typing, the chat explained it as well~)

Hello! A Finn here. The song at 1:22:10 is actually something Finnish and Swedish schools will sing at the spring ceremony when school ends for summer break. It is called the "Summer Hymn" and, you guessed it, it celebrates summer. Here are the most accurate English lyrics I can find for this beautiful song. Finnish name: Suvivirsi Swedish: Den blomerstid nu kommer Now the cherished time has come And sweet summer is here Every place is beautifully adorned With a flower Now we receive the blessing Of the warming sun It rejuvenates natures And summons it to life Once more the fields are verdant And the crops grow in the valley Thee trees in the forest are humming Cloaked in leaves It reminds us Of your goodness, God It declares your miracles Year after year Once more the birds Chirp their pretty songs Shouldn't the Lord's people Also thank their maker Let my spirit join In the choir of your voice And thank the Lord of grace For he is merciful

The fiddler is known as the Näcken but also is known as the Nixie or the Nøkk or numerous other names that all begin with N. He shares those names with several other water creatures in Celtic, Germanic, and Scandinavian folklore. Most notably, shapeshifting water spirits that take the form of horses and drown anyone that tries to ride them. If you’ve seen Frozen 2, you’ve seen this other depiction

Near the beginning, Julia mentioned Cinema Therapy and if it's the channel I think it is then I really recommend watching it. It's a couple of guys one of which is a family therapist, and the other a filmmaker, and the two talk about how different psychological and social things are done in movies, as well as stuff like how the animation or shots help with that. They're also both dads so it's filled with dad jokes.

As a mentally ill cinema fan, I highly recommend. They're not always 100% on the money with every take, but they actively listen and grow and correct themselves. They have an ongoing series about DID because of how heavily (and grossly) it's used in media compared t how little it's understood outside of it. Including episodes about Gollum, Split, and Moon Knight, Moon Knight being one of the best representations of DID I've ever seen, which they introduced me to!

I don’t know if anyone else already commented this but the character we saw named Tuva is actually a creative paraphrase of a painting by the Swedish artist named John Bauer. He made all these fantasy-motifs that are heavy with Nordic lore and mystical forests. Really recommend to look him up! It was really cool to see as a Swede who grew up with all of these stories of Näcken, trolls and the art of Bauer.

This game draws heavily from the Swedish artist John Bauer in the design and it has plenty of references to his work. The painting in their room is a darker version of his illustrations in the book collection "Bland Tomtar och Troll" (Among gnomes and troll). And at 1:52:00 they reference the painting of princess Tuvstarr by the pond (they even changed the aspect ratio for that moment!) Such a lovely game, would love to see you play it more pretty please! It's nice how they incorporated lichens for climbing, and even if cloudberries are the crown jewel of our forrest i would have loved if they had also Lingonberries and Bilberries (the proper blueberries) as a referens the another Swedish illustrator ( and author ) of the same time , Elsa Beskow. The story about Näcken is based on a common myth, the most famous version is "Hårgadansen" which is also a melody/song kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGWWoI2qr5Z-fsk . Näcken does play the fiddle but he / it doesn't have a backstory , just a shapeshifting seducer.

As a game design student I honestly think all video games fall into the “is art” category in some form, because art is so loosely defined and they’re all stories handcrafted and designed by people. of course, i totally can understand why some people would say video games are not generally art (especially if they’re thinking only of AAA video game titles), cause there’s a lot of video games where of course the mechanics and gamification is put before the artistic side of it. i was an artist way before i was a game design student, so i always see the art in all of it, even if its just the small things. i think if you want a lot of other very artsy games, a lot of walking simulators focus on art and storytelling above game mechanics! some other games that give me the same breathtaking sensation are What Remains of Edith Finch and Night in the Woods. both have very different art styles from this, but are honestly so beautiful. games as a form of art will always be one of my biggest passions ❤

To defend Julia on the "single children" thing -- I am an only child and I frequently forget the term and use "single child" by accident, so I feel her 😂

I watched Hereditary recently and a dog shows up in the first scene and even though I wanted to avoid spoilers, I just thought to myself "OHHHHH NOOOOO!" Luckily the dog does not die

There is a great, fun not-salty response song to Germany's result at Eurovision by a German comedian (in 'English') called 'Allemange zero points'.

The gameplay in this game looks exactly like little nightmares gameplay. I can't believe people werent immediately recognizing that. Edit: of course right after I comment I hit the part where Julia said it lol drawfee on point as always

i’m wondering if the textures and assets in this game were made using macrophotography? they look SO lifelike and i’ve learned more recently that there’s a lot of unreal engine packs that use macro assets to create lifelike wilderness scenes which is quite genius. for a game like this, that super high-res texturing works perfectly when you’re playing as a small character in a fairly realistic looking setting!

Honestly this reminds me a lot of unravel I’d honestly recommend it! I’d say it has a similar vibe to it, with running around in the wildness and what not..
