From my experience bullies feel emboldened by their impunity, have enormous self confidence which helps them to achieve goals. People who get bullied instead feel depressed, worthless which on the other hand leads to other negative consequences. This is indeed maddening...

I had similar experience of being brutally bullied in school and clearly remember getting caught off guard by another kid who told me how ugly I was. That caused me to take a hard objective look at myself to determine why I was being targeted for such abuse. I concluded the problem wasn't with me or anything I had done wrong it was with the people attacking me. I then became defiant and vowed to myself that no one, especially my enemies would determine my destiny but me. I also decided the other kids may not like me but that I would make them respect me. I then went to the library and got books to learn how to start working out to get stronger and learn how to defend myself. I also worked hard to achieve academically and in sports so no one could say I was somehow less than anyone else. So being bullied became a character building experience for me. Like you I was a skinny kid and a late bloomer but after working out regularly and developed a lean muscular physique. After college I moved to the big city became successful in business and have had an amazing life with great prosperity in all things, travelled extensively and married an amazing kind and intelligent man. Not a day goes by that I don't wake up thankful for all the blessings I've experienced. On occasion I think about the people who bullied me in school and realize how pathetic they were. I suspect for most of them their lives peaked in HS and it was all downhill from there.

Andrew, I never have seen this message from you...my heart was hurting. Not just for you, but for all those precious kids that are at the receiving end of bullying. You told an exceptional story covering the areas of bullying. Good job! I consider myself fortunate in that I was never really bullied to the degree many children are...most likely do to my height, I hit six feet rather early in Jr. High, plus I was a nice kid? I talked to everyone, and was friends to many as well. Maybe I was just lucky? I did witness several friends get bullied, and it made me mad, especially when a teacher or adult was close by, yet did nothing. I guess all of this stayed with me because years later I became a teacher. Yes, I blame teachers, I’ve been witness to them for turning a deaf ear to this. I am a hawk in my classroom, as I observed most things that go on. From two boys getting water, some girls staring at one another in a way that is not friendly, passing notes that I got, to (the big one, recess and lunch). I begin the school year by never separating from them until I feel they understand my monitoring of them. Some classes would take just until Halloween, and some till Christmas? I’ve only had two groups where I never left there side the entire year. Those were the years that admin placed difficult boys in my class. Yet, my colleagues would still question me about burn out, added stress etc.The great result of this was having a top notch class with children who felt free to be kind and compassionate with everyone. Was it difficult? Yes, it was and still is extremely hard, but I knew I would soon have an exceptional group of learners. So when I hear stories on bullying it becomes necessary for me to put my two cents in? I teach in the LAUSD, the second largest school district with mostly Title One student populations. It can be done! Of course you showed them, your buddy too. Your spirits were stronger than any hateful words or actions on their part. Sorry so long, but I’m passionate about teaching, especially during these times... be well Andrew. Alex from LA.

When I was bullied I talked to my family, I talked to my school, Them my parent talked to the school. Then when the bully came to school and brought a gun they still did nothing. Then when I beat the crap out of the multiple bullies I got kicked out of school. Glad reporting bullies works in your area but, in my area it was useless. This is what can cause a student to shoot up a school when they are bullied and adults refuse to help them.

It's interesting to hear this because my high school was literally nothing like this. My high school was like 95% hispanic, 3% black, and 2% white. There was no bullying. Granted I was only in Honors and AP classes so I can't speak on any other classes but for the most part everyone minded their own business. Whenever I see depictions of highschools in tv and movies I always think how fake it is, but idk maybe it is like that. I was super nerdy and geeky, kinda chubby, bad acne, in band and very antisocial, literally never once was I bullied.
@Ray035956 жыл бұрын
same. my highschool didn't have a crazy amount of bullying either. Just the typical high school drama stuff here and there but no "pushing the nerd and calling him a loser" type of stuff. Most of the "popular" kids were actually decent ppl as well. My graduating class was pretty nice to each other. As nice as teens can get obviously haha. Bullying is probably very different now anyways though. Thank god I escaped high school just before social media REALLY took off.

Andrew, We are survivors of the bullying. I experienced the same stuff happening to me in Elementary, unfortunately my vice principal and principal were somewhat in on it because they wouldn't resolve the issue and wanted to lay the blame on me. That's why I transferred schools in 5th Grade and am now currently a sophomore in High School in a small town in Indiana and haven't had, but a few insidents here, but they were quickly resolved. Also I notice in what your friend said about G.A.P. while not saying that saying is wrong and am not discriminating, but just thought I would do a little research and this is what I found. You're truly an inspiration and I wish you best of luck! "The retailer took its name in homage to "the generation gap," a term popular in the late 1960s describing the intellectual, ethical, and social gulf between young people and their parents' generation. The inspiration for this first jeans-only store came from Donald Fisher's frustrations as a consumer: he was finding jeans hard to shop for, having to travel to several different stores to examine a variety of brands because no one location housed them all." Found this on www.funtrivia.com/askft/Question70064.html

I was never bullied for being gay because I wasn't out yet and still am not out yet and I'm almost 21 but I was bullied. Back in 4th grade this kid would grab me by my shirt and always tell me i had to give him 20$. Every day he'd do this and would even punch my jaw sometimes and always harass me for money so he can go to McDonald's. And just like Andrew I did nothing. I didn't go to an adult and i didn't get help. Friends, please bring a teacher or anyone into this kind of situation before it's too late. Fast forward to high school he actually became a much better person. He'd say hi to me here and there and senior year I helped him do interviews for his school projects and we both just never really brang up the past. We just went on from there. I don't see him anymore but we do follow each other on social media. Andrew as always I love the content you you make and You help inspire others to be who they are and I'm sorry you went through that. Much love my friend❤❤❤❤❤❤ And much love to you❤❤❤❤

@Anonymous totally agree with you 100%. Tbh I would come out as a proud gay man it's just the only thing holding me back are my parents. I'm in school rn and they are the only ones who are helping me with everything and I love them a lot. Problem is they are strict Christian believers and they don't accept gay people. There will always be people who say mean words because people like us are different and sometimes their minds cannot be changed. But there are many more people who do not judge others on how they look, where they are from or how they identify themselves. Those are the people whose words truly matter. And until I'm finally on my own that is when I tell my parents the truth.

I am SO SORRY to hear about that Andrew. I am fortunate enough to not have been bullied at school, I cannot imagine all the things you are going/went through as a kid/adolescent. For anyone who is being bullied, I think the best advice is that you should ALWAYS find someone to talk to (your parents, teachers, friends, school counsellor etc.). Please please please don't think it would be a burden, they are always there to help you. Findings the courage to speak up is NEVER a sign of weakness, stay strong and I hope things will get better in time!

Being disempowered is possibly the ultimate wound a bully can land. Be brave and find someone to share your experiences with. You have the right to feel safe. Don't despair. I was in high school between 1988-1992. A different country, a different time and a completely different world. Times have changed. Strange how the core values of bullying don't change. Andrew, you have offered from great coping mechanisms. From my experience, turns out people I went to school with were going through stuff of their own. Those I've had contact with don't really acknowledge what happened to be. There are no excuses. No matter the reason. No matter what people around you believe is true. In the 21st century people have access to so much help thay can be accessed anonymously. Wish I had but a fraction of what around now. Tap into it. Create your own story and live your own truth.

Most people will probably write "Find a grown-up". But, sometimes that's isn't enough. It's all about finding a "sympathetic adult". There are still quite a few teachers that feel it's "none of our business", or "You need to be more tough". It's unfortunate that LGBTQI will always be a minority in most schools. There are still High Schools that don't have Gay/Str8 Alliances. I understand, as I was picked on, in school, because I was average, awkward, and clumsy. I was so glad when I graduated! I am so sorry you had to deal with that growing up. Nice to know you survived it, and are doing so much better in your life.

You describe the anger turned inward element of depression very well. It is very painful. We all experience bullies. Taking it can result in broken bones. I remember my nemesis very well. Like you I was small. A teacher in high school was my rescue. Things did get better, but it was slow. We need to be very careful with advise that things today are easier or more acceptable. Help is more accessible than it was in the 60's. Finding support is critical. We need to be sure that it remains funded and accessable. It is becoming more and more important that we stay aware that our networks are being attacked more than we can allow. The war for human rights is getting hot again. The bullies are getting public forums again along with fear fired support. Ignorant hate is growing and the push back is getting burried in a pile of other issues. The safe places are still here, but there are a very vocal number of people who want to see them removed and blocked. Things as they are today are under direct attack. We have to leave the party and check things out a little more. We have to start leaving the blinds open and sit by that window all time (almost 😉). How we live is not anybody's business, but a lot of narrow minded zealots are going back to making our business theirs. If successful, kids will not be able to to actually learn that they are not alone. Going back to being labeled as perverts in schools and public places could be returning. History is being revised. I actually heard someone I know label Stonewall as a justified police action last week. That is not better. You do a lot of great things, Andrew. This is one of them. Kids should not be bullied. None of us should be bullied. So far it is unacceptable, but we are going to have to be sure that it remains that way. We all have been staying comfortable in social media. I am starting to see the hate moving in to some of our forums and definitely in political ones. It is normal to see a progressive idea stated and the author labeled as a fag. The comments just slide by. We can't let things slide by in silence like we did in school. You are right. Because we are not standing our ground we are going to lose it. We also need to defend other "minorities". United, we are the majority. Human lives matter. Life matters. Lance Black has some good points. We need to look at them and think them over. End of rant. I liked the Nike shirt. You don't seem to wear things like that accidentally.

This video really moved me... Your #ItGetsBetter story is very inspirational and I'm sure it will help a lot, especially young people who are still struggling with bullies and ignorant people. I was bullied too when I was young and I know how it feels... I made the same mistake as you did and always tried to deal with it myself, never told someone else, but in some situations others that were there at the time noticed and some of them tried to help me... So, whatever the situation or what you feel at those moments makes you think, just know that you are not alone in this, somebody can help you get through, it really does get better. I'm an EMT now, working and studying, providing for myself and helping my parents as well, travelling and learning languages, always trying to improve myself and to help others as much as I can. Money can't make you happy, but it can change your life for better in allowing you to make a life for yourself as you want it and deserve to have, away from the bullies. They don't deserve the pleasure of hurting you, and you should feel sorry for their miserable lives... Always try to be the best version of yourself, treat others with kindness or as you would like to be treated by others, don't be cruel to any human being or an animal or a plant, protect nature as your life depends on it, help someone in need if you can, and always be safe and take good care of yourself. Learn from your mistakes and learn even more from the mistakes of others, and don't let anyone make you believe that you are not good enough... Be careful in trusting strangers, 'cause they might use your trust and information against you, not everyone is trustworthy and kind-hearted, but don't live your life by yourself alone... There are many of us who are willing to help and won't try to hurt you. I've been hurt and bullied so many times as a kid, but still decided to stay strong enough to get through and to live my life, and dedicated myself to help others and work in a health care institution and emergency center, and I try to save as many lives as possible each and every day... My story with bullies is much longer than Andrew's here, but not more or less important or relevant than his, or anybody else's, I'm not gonna get in any details, but all you have to know is that it will get much better and easier as you get older... Believe in yourself. And never, never stop learning! 😊

Your experience sounds all too similar it’s actually scary. Sitting in the bus seat, alone, looking out the window, listening to the soundtrack of a game I liked to try and calm me, as others poked fun at me. In the end I did exactly what you advised at the end and told someone. It worked well for me and put a stop to it all. I’m still really insecure about myself and my appearance to this day, but at least its just me criticising myself and not a group of others doing it too. Thanks for this, it’s nice to know you’ve had a similar experience and are now in a much, much better place. It gives me hope, you know? Thanks Andrew it means a lot. Love you ❤️

Love you Andrew! So sorry for having to endure being bullied growing up. I too was teased and bullied growing up by classmates and my brother with his friends. It was hell and I fought back which didn't help any. Made it worse. The best answer is talk to someone you feel safe with that can help you in your situation. In my day I didn't have to worry about social media because computers weren't around yet. So glad about that. Be strong because it does get better eventually and don't be afraid to confide in someone what you're going through. Don't do anything stupid by taking your own life. That doesn't solve a thing. It just brings more heartache and pain to your family and friends. You are just as important in this world as anyone else and never forget that!

Great video! I’m lucky enough to not have been bullied when I was younger, but your story is still inspiring, even for me. I do wish you’d be vulnerable more often on your channel and Instagram. Of course people put their highlights on social media, but I feel like that adds to our community’s vanity and insecurities. With the professional shirtless pics, and “seemingly” non-stop beach days and travel, it can make those who look up to you or emulate you feel less than, because there lives aren’t perfect. Obviously you shouldn’t be apologetic for your successes that you’ve worked hard for, but the more you (as a huge influencer) are, the healthier our wonderful online homo community can be!!!

He was staring at me with that thing in his face that says forgive me. But I will never be able to forgive him. Those pain that he gave me will only be erased after I take my last breath. But I also thank him for making me who I am now. He made me a hard fucker and this fucker is only a year behind in becoming a lawyer! If anyone is reading this and going through hard time,, "wait and stay strong." There is a beautiful day after every storm.

I love this story and I will hold on to it through the whole of my high school life, but forgiveness does not mean forget or become friends it just mean you no longer hold that courage which I believe will make you better person.xxxooo😘😘😘

Alien invasion You need to forgive for yourself, you don't need that negative energy in your life. You don't have to tell him you forgive him but that hatred and anger will eat your soul. I forgave my tormentors and when I did there was such a relief that I felt. Best of luck to you.

Fuck him. Glad you didn't forgive him simply because he feels bad. Forgiveness must be earned. Anything less than that just cheapens the concept.

+Dief Enbaker You;re confusing moving on with forgiveness. Forgiveness, by definition, is for the benefit of the offender. I don't know where this new meaning has come from, but frankly it's not a good direction.

Wow thank you so much for this. A lot of what you said was eerily similar to my own high school experience. Soundtracks (especially Narnia) got me through so much during bus rides. I also found more confidence in my self towards the end of high school when I had a much more solid friend group in band that made me feel more comfortable with who I am. Video games, like WOW, was of course the thing that kept me sane when I got home. Now I am a composer making music for movies etc myself. Its crazy how much better things get as time passes... I think the best advice I could give, besides what you said, is that make sure you have positive outlets for yourself. Whether it is music, video games, or faith/prayer make sure you have something to help keep you focused on the fact that you are worthy of being the best version of yourself and to pity those that can't see that for themselves to the point where they take that out on others. At least that is what helped for me.

I have had low self-confidence for my entire adult life, and in my twenties I had severe depression. It's hard to know for sure, but I think that the bullying I faced in my childhood contributed to my emotional problems decades later.

Here’s the problem with bullies at school: they break social norms by their rudeness & aggression & intrusion into our privacy, all of which causes us personal humiliation. Bullies have an inner radar for picking on those who don’t fight back; after all, picking on a fighter means a bully could get hurt, and bullies are basically cowards who operate on the basis they’ll get away with their bullying. Most kids who are bullied get stuck on two things: (1) often they think they don’t have the skill set to verbally challenge a bully, and (2) there’s always a chance that challenging a bully could escalate into a physical confrontation even worse than just a verbal assault. So, what’s a kid to do? A: Don’t be silent; defend without aggression your right to be left alone. A bully often will not be deterred by one act of protest, but repeated speaking out, in public and firmly with conviction (raise your voice a bit above conversation level), will bolster your own self-confidence, dent a bully’s enthusiasm, attract others who will agree with you, and (hopefully sooner rather than later) get the attention of those in authority. If, after a couple of weeks, the bully persists, go directly to the principal: lodge a formal complaint, request action, and don’t be dissuaded (an apology alone is not enough) till the bully agrees in formal session to alter his/her behaviour. Postscript: be prepared for some backlash - some kids at school will think you, not the bully, are the trouble-maker - and cold-shoulder you afterwards. This is a tough life lesson (not all your school-mates will come through as real friends) but you will be stronger for it.

Andrew, it's a club of which many of us have been members. School is a rough time. It's been a while since I was in High School. It was because I was bullied that allowed me to make the choice to become a School Teacher. It was a good choice, but I will say that many times bullies don't change no matter at the age. As adults, it becomes a matter of the law. My advice for school kids is to tell your parents. Get involved with the school system. Make it a legat position becasue schools are responsible fo the children from th time they leave the porch of their home until the time they enter their hom eupon their return.

I was bullied so much in primary school, verbal, psychological and even physical violence. Bullies are so cocky when they attack in group. When in reality they are cowards and poor souls. But they cause a lot of damage, mostly in your soul, and that's the most difficult to heal. I'm in my mid 30's now and still dealing with stuff from then

This is perhaps one of the best videos that I’ve seen in your channel so far. Not that I did not like the others but this is really truly deep and inspiring. You might have been an ugly duckling through high school according to you but you turned out to be a successful 24 carat gold guy. The advice you give is honest and to the point. I am lucky to have never been bullied and I even stood up for kids that were. Unfortunately that was a long time ago and you are certainly right, today bullying is worse and meaner. This video should be made available to everyone. I am really impressed by your sincerity. I really hope you do more videos like this because you will help a lot of young people and keep doing the shirtless ones they are nice to look at as well. As I said before you seem to be a very caring, loving and heartfelt guy and this video proves it. Congratulations!! 👍👍

Hi Andrew, sorry you went through those hard times growing up. You came through it and seem to be a kind loving person. I was always a bit of a loner but had some friends and family to rely on. It is really important for kids to tell someone as you say. More important for anybody in authority to help these kids so they do not have to go through being tortured. Take care , proud of you, Bill

Great advice - your turning into a daddy... But really I wanted to cry as you're telling us about being bullied. I grew up a little earlier than you, and had no issues with bullying - breezed through high school but... I wasn't out, and it was very lonely. I hope it's a lot easier for young guys these days, but it doesn't seem to matter why, somehow people can be so mean. For almost any reason, people are hateful and mean. Some regret it later. Others remain a jerk forever. I've learned to keep my head up. Be proud of who I am. You're in control of you, and you alone. People don't make you feel down, -- they hurt you, and kick you, but inside, how you handle it is up to you. You make yourself "feel down". I don't recommend nor condone any violent response, but I agree with Andrew. You and WE all need to do something to push back and not take being mistreated. At the minimum you should call it out as mistreatment, declare it WRONG! Someone around you probably will come to your aid, or sympathize, even if it's not the jerk, and one new ally is better than none!

Yes with bullying it does get better. But unfortunately the effects of bullying stay with you for awhile. So yes the bullying will stop after high school. But the potential damage to your confidence and self esteem will remain for a good while. That’s the worst part of it. The bullies move on and forget they even bullied but the people that got bullied don’t. This is where going to counseling comes into play. Hopefully a professional can help reverse the damage. It’s a long journey but it’s not impossible. Anyway, thanks Andrew for taking the time to discuss this topic. It’s super important :)

Growing up, I was always the big kid. I was bullied from grammer school all the way through High school. To even make it worse, I also had Tourettes Syndrome. I was even called Gay Veneigh and was never even gay at the time. It was the worst 12 years of my life. I know how you felt. I never had friends in both grammer school and High school. I just had one good friend in HS. I hate when my kids get bullied at school. They are also autistic. Its funny today that everyone that made fun of me in school are now friends I talk too once and a while. It's sad that people have to get bullied for no reason. It took me 41 years to finally get healthier and losing weight. Thank you for making a video like this. I am going to have my kids watch this. Thank you again.

Just in advance I apologize for this long comment. I just could not hold back about this topic. LOL Gosh! I know you added this video was not meant to be a sympathetic one, but I feel so empathetic toward your experiences with bullying. To that point I can relate to bullying as well -- it's very hurtful. It seems bullying has accelerated into such a vindictive action these days, especially with the age of social media. I cannot believe how malicious bullies have become; to reward malevolence is something that should be a reality check for everyone -- and yet leaves me feeling sheer disappointment and anger. No one deserves bullying and hatred; everyone must praise more love and positivity in this world. Thank you for sharing your story and advice, Andrew. Your radiance and positivity really help many people's lives and people take notice of it. As a child I know that I usually tried to surround myself around people who embraced and loved me. I find that positivity and acceptance from others really pulled me through those dark and difficult times. Additionally, I immersed myself into writing in my journals pouring my feelings about life and why my life felt significant and valuable. Looking back on it, like no joke, that helped me overcome major depression. Anyway, I hope our world comes to a place of love, prosperity, equality, fairness, and fulfillment because everyone deserves just that.

Andrew your such a great person. if the people that bullied you saw the great person you have become, they would rethink about bullying you. I’ve never been bullied so I might say something wrong But I guess the experience makes a fragment of who we are. It Tells us what people think. and really it doesn’t matter what they think about us. We are who we are and they can’t take that from us. I don’t care if they think I’m ugly or if I’m stupid or not “hard” ( honestly I have no clue what they mean by hard ). You should go tell somebody, it really does help. I’ve have had lots of friends that have been and it does help to tell someone. Find something that can brighten your day ( I watch Andrew, Ellen, play lol etc...) Just remember that there is light in the world and there will be a time we’re you will be able to be with people that like you for who you are. You can change yourself, but not for them, do it for you. Have a good day everyone

Great advice, Andrew! I was bullied in junior high school by one kid in particular, who challenged me to a fight after school. I threw a couple punches and he threw a couple punches. It was a short fight, but it showed the bully that I wasn't going to take it anymore. All it takes sometimes, is for you to stand up and fight through words or a punch or two and they probably won't pick on you anymore. The ones they still pick on are the ones who never fight back. Fight back once and they'll probably leave you alone. They are testing you to see how far they can push you. That guy that picked on me never said another word to me after I punched him. My advice is be strong and fight back and stick with a couple good friends who will also defend you.

Honestly, Andrew, listening to you is kinda like a breath of fresh air. I hate to sound corny, but I take a break from studying to watch and listen to your videos; your topics are are so relevant, and your points are, well, on point. My advice to others would be to do what you did: spin the conversation around, or redirect it, so that you show you are not affected. If you're a nerd now, like I was and still am, it does get better because eventually; the people bullying you will end up working for you! Lastly, Andrew, you don't post ENOUGH shirtless pictures. We could always use MOREEEEE. Please address this issue on your Instagram.

Bullying can come in all shapes and sizes. I never had a 'bully' at school but I did have a friend who would be really nice to me at church but at school he would constantly pick on me, push me ( I had scrapped knee's for 6 months) and worst of all exclude me. We hung out with the same friend group but he would constantly try and seperate me. Best way to deal with this type of bully is to be as nice as possible while he bullies you in front of people. If your friends see you getting bullied for no good reason they'll be on your side. Thats what happened to me. My friends told him if he wasn't nicer to me then he couldn't play with us. He stopped bullying and we became good friends for several years.

Andrew- I hated hearing about your bullying experience! It sounded horrible. I'm glad that you found a way to cope with it, but I agree it is better to say something than do nothing. To any kids being bullied, please go to an adult. If they do nothing, go to another adult. Keep talk to adults until change happens. It is true that LIFE DOES GET BETTER. Middle School and High School are filled with other students that are insecure and looking to fit in. Don't let the ones that go around being bullies make you think they are any better. Inside they are scared that someone will think less of them. Find your group of friends, but more importantly use your voice to make a difference first for yourself and then for others. Once you have a group of friends you all collectively will have a stronger voice together to shut down the ones that are bullying. Be a positive leader, you will attract people that will want to follow you and your message.

I’m super grateful for the community that I live in. In the almost 10 years I’ve lived in my community, i don’t think I’ve ever witnessed any bullying of any kind. The people in my area especially the kids were VERY unsupportive of bullying behavior. Granted there are people that still suck, but for the most part they will openly attack and criticize people who are racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic and especially being awful to disabled people. More than anything else, making fun of disabled people in my school is literally the worst thing you could ever do. I’ve seen people lose friends over stuff like that and it makes me proud.

My advice would be to seek out help from either a teacher or school counselor. No one should have to go through bullying on a daily basis. I certainly did when I was in middle school and for the first two years of high school. Always remember that it's only temporary and things will get better. As you have shown Andrew, even though you were bullied you grew up to be a confident, sexy, successful man. Thanks for sharing your thoughts Andrew. I love these heart to heart videos that you do.

A lot of kids that get bullied are ‘different’ and many times special and land up living very successful lives doing special things. Somehow i have the feeling indeed bullies sense this and are taking a preview on that person’s and their own lives with it’s discrepancies, succes and failure, richness and dreariness and decide to not wait with taking out their jealousy. Look how successful Andrew has become and that on such an early age. Having the balls to come out in an already hostile environment. Waaauw 😮. Amazing. Respect ❤
