I hate making comments. But I had the similar story. I was the pastor's son. Tried the "pray the gay away" camp for 6 full months. Had a lot of negative, hateful, and hurtful things happen to me from my parents. But if your parents truly love you it will get better. It may have taken forever, and I was married for 2 years before my parents were willing to meet my husband. They are in no way accepting of the gay part of me right now but they don't isolate me. We all know where the other party stands on homosexuality and moved on. They realized that it was learn to deal with or not have me in their life. So things do get better with age.

We all have a "real" closet story. I dated a guy for 6 weeks. Once at his place, he panics after someone shows up - turned out it was his wife back early from a work trip. I had no idea he was married. He went to a lot of trouble in his house - there were no photos or signs that a woman lived there. Needless to say, that was the last time I say him - did not stop him from calling and texting me though. Odd thing - he passed away from cancer a few years back, and I decided to go the funeral. I had thought I could just say I was an old friend and be in and out, but his wife stopped me. Seems he actually came out to her at some point and they decided to stay married because " it helped their careers" to be a couple. She said she knew who I was and that her husband always talked about me as that "one that got away"

Wow, this is like forbidden love which is so exciting at that age. I too dated a pastor's son and we went thru similar trials, complete with sneaking around at odd hours, etc. The only difference is that he was of legal age and I was around 17. Even tried the 'praying the gay away' thing. Religion is a cruel institution filled with ignorant hypocrites.

Andrew, thank you so much for sharing the Pastor's Son story! Its a reminder that though we've made great strides forward as a community, there remain pockets of hatred and fear. The best we can do is be good role models for younger generations of LBGTQ people and for other people willing to learn about groups different from themselves. You are an excellent role model!!

I feel bad for you high school boyfriend. If any of you viewers are under 18 and thinking of coming out to their parents I'd recommend you wait if you have any doubts about their reaction. Especially if you go to a conservative church. Sadly many of these parents fail at their most important duty. Loving their kids unconditionally. In some cases with super religious conservative parents it best to just come out by default. Once you on your own live openly. If you parents visit and you have a boyfriend then introduce him, bring him home for holidays etc. After a few years they will get the picture and very likely not confront you. That's what we did with my husbands conservative Catholic Dad. Not having the "big talk" avoided a messy moral confrontation and to this day (We celebrate 37 years this December) I have a great relationship with him. He obviously knows we're gay (We did invite him to our wedding, he declined) but we just don't discuss it. I'd add that my tough guy WWII Marine Dad was awesome. He loved my husband Brian and treated him like a son-in-law. Sadly he did not live long enough to see us get married, but he would have been thrilled.

Oh my god. I dated this guy who's parents are super strict as well and they were super religious. Sadly he became super religious and a jerk and I pretty much decided not to see him anymore and he threatened to out me! It was ridiculous and here I was back in high school very scared. But in all honesty if any of you are feeling scared, we all have been there, just don't make any decisions you're going to regret. I'm happy now, still single, but happy that I can be myself enjoying the California life. Do not let anyone choose your path in life, only you can :)

Sounds like my coming out. My parents found out I was talking to this boy in high school, had the pastor there in the house and everything telling me I wasn't gay. Mom threatened all my supportive friends with a lawyer haha. Good news though, they eventually they came around. Now I have a husband and things couldn't be more normal. Just takes time.

I got kicked out of church many years ago. I hadn’t even done anything. I just answered yes when the pastor asked me if I was gay. My parents never came around (it’s been 30+ years now since I officially came out to them), and they’ve never even met my partner of 16 yrs (and never will). Life goes on, and unfortunately without them, but they had a choice. I didn’t.

I remember dropping by my folks place one day and Mom was very upset. In tears. What upset her so much was that she just found out some parents kick gay kids out of their lives. She and Dad were always supportive of my gay brother and I and our husbands. We were very fortunate.

It's honestly quite sad, and frustrating. I was raised Protestant (not in a pastoral family thankfully), and grew up listening to my dad's jokes about how any pervert found on the news "must be transgender," and my mother's rants about how there's nothing wrong with gay people "as long as they don't act on it." ... I don't plan to come out to them as long as I live under their roof. It always baffled me how both of my parents could have scientific backgrounds yet style a worldview out of hate towards people they don't know or even understand, purely because they read something about it in a book -- especially when my mother used to pride herself on correcting the condemnations of witchcraft to actually banning poisoners. I'm not religious anymore, but I can understand the role of religion as being a means to hone one's moral compass in an effort to keep society stable. If your beliefs add value to your life, reward you for being charitable and forgiving, and remind you not to kill, harm, rape, cheat, or steal from anyone, then all power to you -- regardless of whether your altar has prayer beads, icons, crystals, etc. But if you throw any of that out the window to focus on telling *other* people they're going to Hell to validate *your* religious practices, even when they're not hurting anyone? Then you've missed the point, and you're responsible for any harm they do to themselves because of your words or actions. Bigots will be bigots with or without religion as a backing. Religion can embolden them, sure, but that's only because their twisted worldview warps it into a hateful message.

matthew Morris If they don't accept you, you don't need them. It's really difficult to have confidence when you are in the closet but once you assert your sexuality you get a major confidence boost. Growing up and becoming and independent adult also helps.

As you get older you meet lots of new people. Lots will be accepting and lots won't. It's the sad truth in being part of the LGBT community. We stand together as a group and as an accepting community but homophobes and bigots are always on our asses tailing us saying how homosexuality is a sin

Coming from, not necessarily a pastors kid, but none the less a Christian household who's entire family (surprisingly not my dad) was part of the church, the time and effort you put into that relationship must have meant the world to your boyfriend. I ended being kicked out of my house as a result of my relationship and the effort and love my current boyfriend puts into not only my physical needs (seeing as I practically live with him now) and my emotional needs means the world to me. So, coming from a guy who lived that life, thank you for your patience, love, and honestly kindness, it's not easy living a life with parents like that, but guys like you make it worthwhile.

I totally get what you're saying my own family has very mixed views on sexuality and our Christian faith but thank God there are a lot more about grace and mercy and the love of Christ then other "Christian" families..... see I had a really good friend we became friends through a Christian discipleship program designed to use faith in biblical teaching to help people overcome different struggles in their lives which I know it sounds kind of religious dogma but trust me it was really good especially if you're a person of faith already.... we met there and became very good friends and ever since then we've been in contact for a long time we both went through a lot of spiritual and emotional breakthroughs in the program and without found out that we were molested as children we both discovered that we both had feelings for both guys and girls but he was more about Girls but at the time I was just about being pure not trying to have sex with guys or girls and I was thinking that I can choose who I like but later on I found out that God made me bisexual and you love me just like he loved everybody else.... that's a whole Nother story.... I always supported him and his walk of faith but he always had problems with relapsing back in the hard-core drugs I was always praying for him and giving him encouragement telling him he can overcome it through help and through Christ.... after the rehab that we met at either really relapsed and living on the streets his mom contacted me about that she knew I was a close and dear friend and a person of faith so then I try to get a hold of him and both with my encouragement and his parents my friend went back to rehab.... and then he got out and he was doing really good and actually our friendship started to get closer and closer we always had a close friendship like brothers what it started turn into something more I could definitely feel we were connected in that way but we both told each other we wouldn't because we might mess up our friendship and he had really mixed feelings about sexuality in general.... but definitely more and more our bro-mance was turning into something more he relapsed again kind of bad I was trying to encourage him to just get up and get right back on the horse through faith and encouragement and all of a sudden out of the blue his mom message me and said my friend was in rehab and he relapsed really bad and he's not doing good and my friend's mom said that she believes I'm not a good influence on her son that I am going to Hell if I don't repent about my sexuality and I should "get the hell away" from her son..... it felt like I got shot right in the heart I was so emotionally hurt for almost 2 weeks afterwards even to this day I'm thinking about it but yeah there are just some people that are more about religion then faith more about what they can do to earn salvation then the The grace and mercy of the true gift of salvation that Jesus Christ gives to ALL how believes

this would be my story if I came out...its not that they are just terrible people they dont understand gay people. they have such conviction over this subject that they bar themselves from any type of understanding. I dread the day my parents find out um gay it scares the crap out of me...

Hey Spencer, you should look how the Mormons are dealing with their gay kids. They have really turned the corner. They have a 'Mormon and gay' page on their website and have some excellent videos - highly recommend them. It might help.

My first “serious” relationship was with a pastor’s son. It was alright. We lived together for a bit. His parents knew about us.

Thanks for a very moving story. I'm put off by the negative comments below. As if a 17 year-old has the maturity to decide about the girlfriend. What an awful home he grew up in. I wonder how he is. You do inspire me. And I love GOT. Did you watch Sense8? Alas, it's been cancelled. Just like KyleXY. WAH!

I'm a gay pastor's son and this sort of story is the reason why I didn't come out to my dad till I was 22 (after I graduated college). They had too much control over my life until then and I didn't want them to freak out and try to send me to conversion therapy.

Thanks for shareing your story. It can be awfull growing up in a religious family. By story turned out differently thanks to my Dad, who supported me right from the beginning. It took him 4 years, though, to turn Mother around. But it paid off big time. My parents turned out GREAT. I have, though, over time seen situations like the one of your boyfriends several time and have learned that you never know how people react. You can have the nicest and most understanding parents infront of you way out in the countryside, whereas you can have the most ignorant and horrible city people parents, who have done nothing but reading books - for generations.
