Women really go through a lot in this country. We need to do something. I was reading on Twitter that lecturers were kicking against a sexual harassment law because it “affects university autonomy”. Sometimes I don’t know where to start with Nigeria. 🤦🏾‍♀️ Stories like this make me so mad and the victim shaming is disgusting. Good on you for speaking up and bringing attention to this matter.

Dimma, thank you for sharing your story. I would also like to say that I understand how you feel about not reporting the men that harassed you, but take comfort in the fact that you handled the situation the best way that you felt that you could at the time. Too many women, myself included have been and are still being subjected to these kinds of abuse of power by men in authority be it at school, church, work, etc. These men are predators and need to be stopped. Thanks for creating a platform whereby women can share their stories and thereby help someone that may be going through the same thing. Love your channel.

I had an old cranky lecturer, (probably in his late 60s) in my first year, he was chasing after me like crazy. I was like 16 or so and he would call me to tell me he was in my hostel waiting for me in the parking lot and he wanted to take me out and stuff like that. It was so crazy cos I couldn’t tell my parents about what I was going through because everyone warned me that he had friends who’ll lecture me in higher years and they’ll all victimize me. I handled him from a distance and avoided getting him upset with me and fail me. I told my mom about it after I graduated and she still gets mad everytime she talks about it. Hurts her that I went through that alone and she couldn’t help me cos I was trying to avoid being victimized. It’s terrible, I wish I knew these things when I was in uni. There’s a lot to learn from this video. Thank you very much.

This is why I am forever grateful I left Nigeria for my university education. I keep saying this, Nigerian educational system is such a big mess.Teachers and professor have way too much power and they abuse it whenever they can. Nobody even holds them accountable that is why Nigerian education is still where it is today which is also why when Nigerians who have the opportunity to school abroad do they do so much better! At the root of this problem is the patriachal system in Nigeria that is why you notice that 99% of sexual assault cases in Nigerian universities involve MEN as the perpetrator and female students as the victims. Just imagine all one has to go through to prove that this is happening to them, such a broken system!. Yet, people ALWAYS find a way to blame the victims so infuriating . You are doomed if your don't say anything and you are doomed if you do, This is why feminism is very important in Nigeria.

It happened to me in school too. He was not just my lecturer but my Project supervisor, it was hell but one day i couldn't take it anymore so i blocked him on his way out from the office, shouting and crying on top of my voice until another lecturer heard and after narrating my ordeal, he was investigated and suspended and i passed cos i endured for 3 years having carryovers and all. I had another one but it was a female lecturer and hers was another thing entirely in fact i couldn't report cos no one believed me. Something has to be done in Nigeria not only in uni but even in the office. it's endless

When I was in med school in Ukraine, there was a lecturer who taught us Pharmacology. This man is one we’d been warned about so I knew that he was a potential pain. From the first class - he asked my name and every class after when we’d have break he’d tell me to come to his office with him 🙆🏿‍♀️🙆🏿‍♀️🙆🏿‍♀️. I was so cautious when I went there, anytime I had to go to his office that wasn’t during class break I always went with my boyfriend. I scaled through by making sure that I didn’t ever let him touch me, he’d touch my classmate - touch her thighs when we’d be doing the computer tests, rub her shoulders, it was a mess. This man had been reported since our vice Dean was a student; when my classmate reported him again they decided to just get the police involved because the university board wasn’t going to do anything. We were lucky we had female staff that were on our side and I thank God for that.

I am so mad and going through shivers right now. PLEASE if you have younger ones in school or daughters. Encourage them to let their parents know immediately if they experience any form of bullying or harassment. It's unfortunate that things like this go on in schools and the parents are the last to know for the fear that it will get out of hand if parents know about it. The reality is when parents are informed and involved early enough, it's nipped in the bud most of the time. Talking from experience and thanks for sharing your story!

But thank you for sharing these stories. One can only hope and pray that this allows for a deeper, freeing conversation to happen, initially here in the comments but then out in the world. THIS. NEEDS. TO. STOP.

I school in Ghana I think too much power is given to most lecturers in Nigerian schools. Here in my school, you have about 10 lecturers taking one course in one semester. Tell me how you would sleep with 10 of them to pass or attend all their churches. Here, registrations are done online without any lecturer's consent. I think these are one of the ways these annoying torment of power on students can be curbed

Thank you so much for sharing your story and supporting women. Girl.....you couldn't have handled the situation any better, you did the best thing at that time. I can remember discussing this issue with my sister( light in complexion and attractive) who went to a federal university and she said she had the same experience because of her skin color but one of her senior colleague in school then, told her to tell the lecturers that were disturbing her for sex that she is from Ekiti state because they believe Ekiti people are ritualist and very powerful and that she is married and if any other man sleeps with her other than her husband the man will die, so she had to go buy a fake ring just for classes. Thankful to God the trick worked for her and the three lecturers were scared when she told them and all of them left her but she definitely did not pass well in the courses, she had "Ds" and "E".

It's not that simple. Especially something that happened quite a while back. I'm sure she would like to reveal their identity, but she's aware of how badly that could turn out. Instead they'll use their power to tarnish her for "false accusations". We all know how a lot of these scums get away with some many things even with concrete evidence.

vidviewa Sadly,I was unable to go to uni but my bf who is Nigerian and a Uni graduate has told me so much about Uni life ,so I am a little aware of the struggles u guys face. Saying that I am so sad and shocked to hear what FEMALE students are facing. For anyone to get as far as Uni is a huge acomplishment so to hear how a person employed to teach and support students whilst finding their true potential, not to mention him being placed in a position of trust is truly stomache churning.I feel the points you made eg. Speak out, have proof and of course request for your papers to be marked by another person are ESSENTIAL.Imagine how many females have dropped out of studying because of these sexual predators. This subject has really opened my eyes and I am so sad to hear this. These animals should be screened before employment but most of all they need to be named and shamed.I am so sorry for anyone who had to face this at school.

Absolutely disgusting. I just can’t comprehend this saga. It appears most people don’t know right from wrong any more or even basic human rights. How do people normalise such behaviour?. Am just so furious they do get away with it. Nigeria needs a revolutionary leader to cleanse the system. It’s deep rooted. I weep for my country. Am so sorry that you had to go through this horrible experience during your study. I studied and live in the UK and have never heard anything from my secondary to university level. It’s absurd other girls thinks the victim is to be blame. Sometimes I wonder why women are their own enemy’s. If this generation starts to speak against it , am sure it will really make them uncomfortable. Then the change we need will gradually take place. ## speak up against perverted lecturers##. Let’s name and Shame them. Enough is enough.

I am outraged just listening to this, and can't believe that this is a norm. This kind of reminds of my 9th grade biology teacher, Mr. Sesay. I believe he was Nigerian as well. But he wouldn't allow the girls to wear coats or jackets in his class and he would keep the air on all year round. When enough of us would complain about how cold we were he would turn the air off periodically. I always thought it was strange that this rule only applied to the girls, but we were young and none of us questioned it.

I went to uniport and it was horrible there for some of my class mates. I went through drama free until my final year. The last lecture of one of our borrowed courses just before our final exams the professor noticed me because we where all complaining about something. He asked me my name I naively told him. My saving grace was that the school had just introduced an online scores recording system. My friend Dayo in another department is among the team that helps this professor mark his papers. So one evening after Dayo and the rest where about to leave he asks them to find my script. Dayo was shocked when he heard my name and quickly said to him that he had marked and recorded the scripts of my class on the system. And the professor replied “Kai” luckily he wasn’t savvy enough to realise it could be changed. When Dayo told me what happened I fell on the ground and worshipped God. My dad had just died and he was a lecturer in my uniport as well. So I did not know how I would have fought that professor, he was notorious for his sex for marks.

Dimma, I'm so glad you decided to speak out about this and have inspired others to do so as well. This has got to stop. How can these individuals be so corrupt?! To the extent that they're willing to hinder the progress of their students to satisfy their greed and sexual gratification??! In the end Nigeria also suffers. How can we develop further as a nation when the education system (which aims to further development) is being abused?! It's upsetting to say the least. I'm just glad these issues are now being publicised. Change has got to come.

For others going through the same thing, it makes such a difference to see that they are not alone in this; and that someone as well-respected and accomplished as yourself has had the same or similar experience. This was common with a professor at my HBCU. Coincidentally he is Nigerian also. I heard about his inappropriate behavior by others so I was always creeped out with his flirting but he really scared me when he found out my dorm room phone number and called me. I had never showed any interest and was afraid after that. Thankfully he never called again and didn't fail me bc I wasnt interested but he would do creepy stuff in class that made us all uncomfortable like walking desk to desk " checking your work" and massaging your shoulders or stuff like that. 🤨😞

It was very common when I did my undergrad and I am extremely grateful to God that I did not have such encounter, I was once told I didn't experience it despite it's prevalence in my department because I was very young and not as 'endowed' as the older girls (lol) but on the contrary the problem I faced at every level of my education was one teacher or lecturer thinking I was very young and did not deserve to be where I was at the moment and just felt the need to try to make me fail saying I was going too fast. And this was really frustrating but I did not let that disturb me .

I've experienced this more often than I care to actually relate. And I can say it has affected me adversely in my life to a point where I would rather be self employed, a single mother and stick to having only a few female friends. I've been harassed in bars, school, work and family events for looking the way I look. And on the few times that I tried to talk about it, I was chastised for inviting the harassment by so called friends, family members, fellow employees and bosses. I once had a man buy a Sim, obtain my number, ask me out all while he was married and then he told his wife I actively seduced him. I've quit two jobs, and have since just turned into myself because even a therapist once claimed I caused all these incidents. I'm tired really

Hey Dimma... had a similar experience here in South Africa. Was doing my 1st year last year.. I'm studying International Communications... I ended up failing Economics in my 2nd semester. It's now a carry over that I will be looking at this year in my second semester. Was seriously devastated. The lecturer used to just belittle in class when we'd give answers or say things like: "you don't know the work" when we'd answer. I am the course rep and I am never late for any class or hand in my work late. Last year when the results came out and i found that i have to repeat this module really broke my heart. Yes Dinma, in my school a lecturer was found guilty of sleeping with his student because the case was taken to court, he was suspended then but now, he is back as the Dean of that Faculty, I am like why??? To come and continue from where he stopped? Sometimes the situations are helpless, I try to avoid such lecturers though... The female lecturers or female students that shame people are mostly the ones that give in and they are the ones that tell you stuffs like whats there?? after all, you do these things... I have a female lecturer who told me once to meet with one new young lecturer in my dept so he'd help me with my project, like she literally was telling me to meet him and do what he wants or pay him, she too extorts money from students for no reason, say you pass by her office, she will call out to you and tell you to buy her lunch or else. For me, I try to make myself invincible but no matter how you try, somehow they still get to know you.... I pray alot too and commit them and myself into God's hands and I believe there is nothing prayers cannot do... This problem is really a serious one and in most cases they get what they want, its just sad

Many girls have suffered one way or the other in their lecturers hands, I was fortunate to be asked and not forced or put under any form of pressure, happened 3 times with 3 different lecturers in my 4 years,God help us in Nigeria.

We had this lecturer when I was in school, I had heard a lot about how he harassed students, telling them to do ridiculous things I can't even type, I tried my best to be unseen by him until one day during exams(wasn't his course, we had already written his much earlier) he approached me and asked me to see him in his office after the paper. I got to his office and he said I was the highest in the assignment he gave us(was a really huge assignment like a mini project) and asked how I did it, who did it for me? I'm confused like, I did it myself.. then he goes on to call his assistant lecturer who was marking the exam scripts, asked her how my paper was and she said I did very well... Then he goes on to say, he can't accept this. He has never noticed me in class so how can I be the highest in the assignment and do so well in exam, that he was going to fail me. I was honestly weak like, so now it's a crime to pass too, I didn't know when I broke down in tears out of frustration but no way was I going to beg him or admit to doing what I didn't do. I stood my grounds that I did it all myself and he can carry out any investigation he wants to. He said he was going to check in with other lecturers to know how I fared in their courses, I asked him to please go ahead. He later dropped it all, when he could hold nothing on me but he kept harassing people, had sex with a student and she went mad (Well we don't know if it's the sex that made her go mad or it was already in her but we put it all on him) The entire department had a protest round school, it was crazy. The department had to force him to retire to save him the humiliation of being sacked. That was the beginning of no nonsense in my department. About a year after, another was let go for same sexual harassment as we the students realized we could do a lot by speaking out. Just last week a friend was telling me of his female friend whom her lecturer in Ghana is asking her to pay 1000 ghana cedis or have sex with him to pass the only course holding her back from graduating. Told him to have her record him, report to authorities, call him out.. 2 days ago I asked about it, he said she paid the money as she felt it wouldn't end well, he might spin it all around. It's sad how a lot of females are still scared and bullied into doing these things. God help us.

This is wild. I am American and I have never heard of such things happening. The worst that happened to me is a professor didn't teach his class or provide study materials and just handed out grades. He gave the athletes As and they never came to class. You went through hell. It is also interesting the terminology differences. We call them tests and we call the teachers professors. We call remarking scoring or grading. I had to figure these things listening to your story but I figured it all out and enjoyed your video. Thanks for sharing.

Demetria Strozier I'm in America, I've been here since 1994. It happens here often. Even the female teachers here sexually assault their students in grade school. Some of them even get pregnant by them. This link may help you understand why it is not widely know when some teachers sexually abuse their students in America and how they get away with it. www.usatoday.com/story/news/2016/12/22/teachers-who-sexually-abuse-students-still-find-classroom-jobs/95346790/ . I personally have experienced this here in America.

I am 45 year old American woman and I have heard of and witnessed situations of sexual harassment from instructors and administrators since elementary school. From excessive touching to excessive swats to actual molestation, these are some of the things I have first hand knowledge of. You have had a fortunate education career to have no knowledge of these kinds of things.

I am South African and marred to a Nigerian man. A wonderful man. We have had conversations like this where Nigerian women are victimised and failed because they won’t do favours for the lecturers. I find it sad that people who do pass when they are incompetent, they go out there and mess up big time. This is very scary especially for those who want to be Doctors. They end up killing people. Nigerian system is very corrupt and it is good that women are becoming more educated and finally standing up for themselves. 👏🏾

The disgusting thing is after sleeping with the lecturers through uni, females are still subjected to sleeping with their bosses for promotion/ work; it’s really sad how women are treated in this country

Sadly these things happen to women all over the world. I live in another country and "men of God" are allowed to get away with a lot. It is difficult and confusing for young women to know what to do, especially when they aren't supported by other women. Blaming the victim is commonplace and needs to stop. Thanks for this video, hopefully it gets people talking and change happening.

Dimma, let me tell you something! This was so rampant in my university. What I did and was advised to do when I was in university was do everything to avoid attracting attention to myself. My name in university was ‘baby’ for a reason. I was also a crazy model student. I dressed decently, was never late to class, did my assignments, tests and exams and most importantly, I prayed a lot(if I mention my university, you’ll know it was very needful). I was a different person in university because I was usually one of the youngest in my set. Another alternative is to be friends with female lecturers or male lecturers with clout in your department. Lecturers usually have cliques and back up people they like. This worked to favour a lot of people when I was in school. The annoying thing is that there is also a bad side to it. If you report a lecturer, his colleagues might decide to take his side and it’s not until your final year when you have a carry over that they refer you to the reason for it. I’m just tired of the education system in Nigeria

I remember one lecturer in my fourth year in school he made each student pay 500 naira each after every of his class because he is Coming from another campus. It was crazy because he was doing it with pride, our Hod and Dean of faculty shockingly couldn't do anything about it. Then he will come and tell us that he will have to lodge in a five star hotel and eat good food during the time he has to travel to lecture us. The was just a petty thief and nobody has done anything to him bcz he is notoriously known for collecting money from students

I remember both lecturers. Very corky and corny men. Still grateful to God I never fell into their traps. Your whole experience with Dr. N in our final year I still remember vividly. I think you forgot 1 where we had a Saturday lecture, you came with a jeep. After class I heard asking randomly where is chidimma? And someone replied see her getting into her car...someone calls your name, you turn same time with Frances, and If he and I quickly gave you a sign to drive off immediately. And he indirectly scolded us for giving you hint.

Dimma, well done for posting this video. Your story about sexual harassment towards women is as old as the hills, unfortunately. Nigerian men have gotten away with it for too long, whether in the academic scene, job scene or wherever. I often lament why there are no female human rights groups in Nigeria after all this time. To be silent is to give them the victory. I suggest that there be public announcements in newspapers, magazines from anonymous writers to warn others of these predators. No one should be fooled by the ‘ Reverend’s” or men of God of Nigeria. Church is a business which has nothing to do with morality. Only women can protect other women so I suggest there be movements and feminist groups to advocate for abolition of female sexual abuse.
