I live on the western side of those mountains in northern Nan province. The 'bald hill/mountains' type clearing is a bit depressing but does seem to be decreasing and even efforts at reforestation and more sustainable agriculture are happening. But that clearing in Laos in next level and distressing. Thankfully the prevailing winds do not blow towards Thailand from there.

Quick....run...the farang is in town. I know it well mate. 🤣 Seems like Nene doesn't get motion sickness mate. Mine is terrible. She can't go 10 minutes without throwing up here in HK or when we are in Laos. I tell her it is psychological but she's not having it. Funny thing is, when we went to New Zealand and did a 3,000 Km road trip, she didn't puke once. I remember the first time we went to Vang Vieng, we went on a non-air bus. It was the bloody puke bus. People throwing up all over the place. I don't get motion sickness, but I was close to vomiting just from the smell and sounds of it all.

Great that both wear seat belts! I wonder how many lives could be saved in this part of the world if the governments had a concerted effort to change their driving cultures? A relatively poor country such as Lao could surely get help from international donor governments or NGOs. So much largely needless death and maiming. If either of the creators read this - great video, thank you. I'm thinking of visiting Laos in December from a trip to neighbouring Thailand and I will watch more of your videos.
@NowinLao
@NowinLao Жыл бұрын
I have said that all along. They could halve their road toll if they policed seatbelts and helmets. It costs nothing to implement, the government does not have to outlay funds, they just have to fine those who they see not wearing them. Peoples habits will change if it's costing them.. Thanks Charles, safe travels mate

So, a question for anyone who might have the answer. Why the slash and burn? Obviously, they are harvesting some of the wood but, some other wood is burned. I thought that they might do it so they can farm the mountain but, that does not seem to be the case. Could it be that they are controlling the forest growth for whatever reason? Or, is it all of the above? I had asked Tsua on his channel but I don't think he understood. Good stuff. It's incredible what you two get into and find.🙏👍

Are you sure that's not logging. The usual slash and burn doesn't look like` that. In classic slash and burn you find logs laying all over the grounding, Also in old S&B they would leave forest and burn squares off then move on to the next spot This gave the forest time to grow back . So that made it so they would come back to same spot every few years. A kind of crop rotation leaving the bulk of the forest still there. Here there is nothing for miles..They plant around the downed tree trunks as they won't burn The brush and tree top do burn off. S&B has been shown to not hurt the eco-system. Something is wrong with this picture. So I am wondering why no logs on the ground. Maybe logging companies have been here and hauled off the timber. Then these people moved in on it as it is prime growing for dry rice. My wife's family is from the north and she say it is hard to buy dry rice as they don't produce as much as they used too. Iit is good so we buy it when ever we can. Hard to find in Vientiane.

Your title on this post confused me. You were her first, lol, her first what? I was born in Laos in Borikhamxay Province back in the day, far from the city. One time, I saw an American CIA came to my village and he spoke a language that I could only hear so many "ssss". May be he said: gun(s), soldier(s), dog(s), etc. Now, I know and speak the language for nearly 1/2 century, but I don't pay attention to the "s". I enjoy watching your videos though!

Slash and burn practice to me is harmful to the nature, natural resources, animals and birds, and people of small country Laos. I do understand that most people need the mountainous lands growing crops to feed the family and maybe as little income. This is a small country, the population is increasing, there are still not enough non farming jobs for most people. Sooner or later, the lands will be wasted, what else the growing population will do for self sustaining agriculture to feed the families.
