Indeed. A very likeable man. He made a mistake signing for Ferrari. At Williams, despite their previous reputation for viewing drivers as employees, he would have been nurtured and looked after. Ferrari, being a big, political bureaucracy did not work like that, and in Alain Prost, he had the ultimate politician and diplomat as a team-mate, who sorted him out comprehensively. He wasn’t able to politick effectively and make the team work for him. But come to think of it, very few drivers (bar Ascari, Surtees, Lauda and Schumacher) have been able to get the very best out of Ferrari.

We need a team like Jordan on the grid again that provides the conveyer belt of drivers for the top teams. All the teams seem to have junior drivers these days, but we need more cars on the grid so they can actually race and upset the top drivers and bag the odd win and podium.

Always admired Jean as a driver, and when he speaks you just think he is gonna start to cry, a great talent who just seemed to miss opportunuties in F1. If you know F1 you will know what I mean, one of my favourite drivers of all time and a true gentleman. About 20 years ago I was reading my monthly F1 magazine and I found out Jean is 1 day older than me, we will both be 60 this year in June. So I hope June is a great month for you and your family and have a very, Joyeux 60ème anniversaire.☘ :}

One of his best years was 1996 in the Benetton. He was regularly on the podium as a best of the rest behind a dominant Williams, designed by Newey. Add to the fact Briatore and Brawn were fighting, and a lot of the crew were already packing their bags for Ferrari jobs. Much like his display in Phoenix, 1996 was a real show of the talent.
@ssssssss68897 ай бұрын
That' s true. However , they ( the team and Alesi) had too fanfaronned , jumped uo and down before the season start and puts audience expextation very high. In that regard, the results were a huge deception. I remember the interview that Alesi gave to french paper L'auto-journal in the pre-season. He was clearly saying he was targeting the world title 1996 and he had no time left and he was anymore not at an age to be satisfied with small pieces. ( small results) ( translated from french). If they had played it a bit down , 1996 would be perceived as a far less of a deception or underachievement.

In F1 you have to be in the right car at the right time, which helps explain Alesi's one win. Its been 11 years since Alonso won a race, over 2 years since Hamilton won, and Schumacher didn't win any races in his Mercedes comeback. You can't be too critical of Alesi. Maybe he should have nursed the cars better, however even when Schumacher started with Ferrari, they were unreliable.
@marguskiis77116 ай бұрын
Alonso and Hamilton are the victims of rules which are favoring Adrian Newey (and the team he is designing for). The rules were set to end the Mercedes dominance and they saw the only way is favor Newey but it turned into bigger disaster instead.

I was there to see his only son and I've just realized his debut it race in France 1989. I went to Monza a number of times and was a number of frustrating car breakage including the year a rear hub failed and eventually. Back in the days of the V12s Alesi and of Berger were usually first out of the pits. To hear the shreik of the Ferrari engine as it made it's way around the Royal Park at Monza or the Ardennes Forrest was something else.

Peter Windsor: “I remember going to a nightclub - it was DC’s party actually - after a Brazilian Grand Prix one year, and it was a late party,” “There was a balcony overlooking the dancefloor and I went up to the balcony to look down on it, see who was there and what was going on, and Kimi was up there.” “He had his elbows rested on this balcony, staring into space. I stood next to him and we both stared in silence at this scene, and then suddenly Kimi turned to me and said, ‘I hate Formula 1’, and then just walked away.” Quite a contrast between these two Ferrari drivers. 😄😄
