"The doctors asked me____, I said unhesitatingly that I have done it before." The part that has "bleep" on it, It means that the doctor asked if Suga attempted (/has thought of committing) suicide. The part where he mentioned memories about lying on the bathroom floor was a reference for attempting suicide according to k-armys. Suga had the hardest life (pre-debut) out of all the members. At 13, he started writing lyrics and learned MIDI and eventually producing. His first love is his piano or music in general. (He made a song about his piano entitled "First Love") who he described as his only friend when he was a kid. His parents didn't support his passion for music in the beginning. They were not financially stable and were being practical. They would even throw his lyrics to discourage him but Suga would sneakily continue to do it. "As for me...[my parents] were very much against [me becoming a rapper] to make me reconsider [my choice], they hit [me] and fought, and things like this...so I made music [under those circumstances]. "I had some basic MIDI gear before entering the company, things I'd bought as lyricist after saving up enough money by walking around for 2 hrs everyday and skipping dinners everyday" In his hometown, he used to work as a studio engineer while composing and performing in front of 2- 50 people, ( he was part of the hip-hop group called D-town then where he is one of the youngest). He worked part time at a music studio and was underpaid, sells his songs but often gets scammed (gets away w/o paying) . He said his parents never saw him performed back then. Suga went to Seoul to pursue music at 17. Imagine pursuing your dream where no one believes in you aside from your older brother. Where everyone told you that if you pursue music, you'll make your family broke. He had only one supporter at that time, his older brother, to whom he would show his songs. When asked if his parents eventually gave him permission to make music and Suga replies "well...before giving me permission, I was already out and about doing music." He struggled at finance in Seoul and admitted that before, he would have to choose between buying a two dollar noodles or using his money to take a bus (he will always choose to starve ). On Wings concept interview, he said that in the past, he had struggled to afford three meals a day. Q: What happened in the past?" "I couldn't eat three meals a day It was hard" "When I was working in the studio, I arranged songs or made beats and even sold them. Then I naturally started to rap and did performances" Q: How much did you earn? " Nothing" Q: You said you were working though. "That’s what it was like to work there. Usually we don’t have any income. Working in the studio, it was difficult to pay for food and transport. In front of the studio, there was a Chinese restaurant that sells Jajangmyeon (noodles) for 2,000 won, if I walk down further, there was a place that sells Janchi guksu for 1,000 won. I worried about it everyday. If I eat the 1,000 won Janchi guksu, I could get the bus and if I eat the 2,000 won Jajangmyeon, I’d have to walk 2 hours to get home. Even though it was tough, I want to make music so I endured it."

"Show me the money", which he mentioned, is a rap TV show, where rappers compete together. This show is pretty fake and some rappers gain recognition from it. That is why in the lyrics Yoongi is saying that he doesn't need it, he became successful without this show The concert that he is talking about, when he hid in the bathroom, is the concert that BTS had to cancel because Yoongi was having serious panic attack He mentioned word "han", which wasn't translated. It is interesting. The next info is from doolset: "Han is a mix of sorrow, nostalgia, anger, pain, and hope. It’s the emotional journey and state of mind of someone who has been gravely wronged but is powerless (made powerless) in society to take revenge but decides eventually to cling to the hope of a better future when you overcome your Han" The censored part is actually saying "Have you ever..." probably implying suicide attempt/self-harm Also "trying to sleep on bathroom's floor" seems to be a metaphor for suicide Part about crushed shoulder is about that time when he got into a car incident during his delivery job and severely injured his shoulder. He was afraid that his label kick him out if they found out about that because it was in 2012 and he was already a member of BTS, so he didn't tell anyone and continued to train with a crushed shoulder. It could never heal proprely and since that time, for 8 years he was suffering from pain until last year he got surgery In conclusion Yoongi is very strong person and inspires a lot of people

Yoongi in 2015, when BTS had concert in Japan, he had a panic attack and hid himself in the bathroom and was unable to perform. At the same time Taehyung was brought to hospital for food poisoning. So the concert ended with only 5 members of BTS performing and Japanese fans were crying throughout the concert. After the concert, Japanese Armys bashed Suga for not doing the concert. After the tour, BTS went on a break but Suga went back to Japan and reminisce what just happened on that day. He posted a very, very long apology in twitter calling himself a weak man pretending to be strong and how he wished that he just went through the concert instead. In my opinion, although Japanese Armys deserves an explanation, Yoongi did not have to apologize for something he had been suffering for years (depression and anxiety since he was 18) and he should definitely not insult himself like that Hobi says Yoongi is the strongest at heart and real Armys knows that. 💜

Hey I know it’s been a long time since your commented this and I hope you don’t mind me just finding your comment now 🙈😅 I was wondering if you could clarify the part where thy performed with only 5 people? As far as I know they went up on stage and cancelled the concert completely. I would really appreciate you clarifying it for me. I am afraid I might have the wrong information. It’s been so long and maybe I just don’t remember it right?

@@maggie4927 not my words but i saw someone say this. apologies it is a bit long. (i do not take credit for this response.) For those who didn't know what happend back then I hate talking about this because it was one of the most upsetting and scary moments of my time being an ARMY, but, let's take a trip to December 27, 2015, BTS is in Kobe Japan for a 2 day concert. Suddenly we start getting negative updates from ARMYs attending the concert. they started telling us that the concert hadn't even started yet, the boys weren't coming out, they kept delaying the concert, this wasn't normal, cause Japanese concerts are very very well organized and punctual about 20-30 minutes after the time the show was supposed to start. Five of the boys came out on stage, Namjoon, seokjin, jungkook, hoseok, and jimin...no Taehyung, no Yoongi. the audience was very confused, some started shouting, then joon announced that the concert had been suspended. He apologized, they could not show the stage performance. Level they wanted to with only five members present. Shortly after, the crowd heard hold me tight playing the lights dimmed. The boys weren't moving as they performed. The crowd didn't move. Everyone was in shock. Yoongi's recorded part played through the speakers. then, they sang let me know. Once again, no movement, yoongi's recorded part plays then the lights come back, and Joon explains that yoongi and Taehyung are at the hospital, that they didn't feel well during practice, the crowd started crying, sobbing, Joon asked everyone to Keep yoongi and Tae in their thoughts, then the five members performed I need u Japanese version, dancing without tae or yoongi, people were bawling. After the song, the 5 members left the stage & bighit staff came out to tell the crowd to go to the official site for refunds Meanwhile, BigHit posted an explanation on Twitter of how the two dates in Kobe had been cancelled due to yoongi and taehyung being sick and that they were at the hospital, us ARMYs on Twitter didn't find out what happened during the concert until an hour after BigHit's tweet. We were panicking...we had so many thoughts, people were already getting pissed at the company for overloading the boys with concerts and events, they were convinced the boys weren't eating enough, they were angry that bighit could even let the five members come on stage. Many fans had seen jungkook, seokjin, and jimin crying while they performed those three songs. It was chaos. It wasn't until a month later, January 10, 2016 that yoongi wrote us a very long thread on Twitter revealing his feelings of failure cause of his not being able to perform at Kobe, it really hurt us, seeing the turmoil yoongi had been going through the entire time, alone. When his mixtape came out, alot of fans made the guess that yoongi might've actually been in the building the entire time of that very very short concert in Kobe. That was just one event that revealed to us how vulnerable our boys were & how attached they were to each other, how much they relied on each other but at the same time how each member was battling their own demons, trying to survive their inner turmoils in order to move forward. that was 2015, that was 2016, we're now in 2018, the boys have released a 4 part series tracking the journey to self love and acceptance, they've repeatedly told us how they're not suffering anymore, that they've become happy, confident, that they're starting to love themselves. And although the boys each most likely still have inner conflicts they're struggling with, i believe they've reached a point in their career where they're all individually stronger than ever, this making their bond as one group stronger than ever, no more vulnerable as used to be BTS and ARMY has had this belief since debut....7-1=0, meaning, if even one member is missing then BTS is not BTS anymore, meaning to be considered an ARMY you have to love and respect each member without leaving anyone out, this belief never wavered, in fact it got stronger. So when faced with a new equation, 7-1=7, many recoiled...in disbelief, in anger, in disgust, they thought, this equation is asking us to change our belief, to think it's okay for one member to be missing, that BTS will still be BTS. But actually think about it more I'm gonna ask you to remember back to the event I just described above...how BTS was vulnerable, how attached they were to each other, how each individual member was in such turmoil to the point that if one went down, they all went down together, they all suffered, together. Now remember how I told you that these same boys have become happier, more confident, more secure with themselves and with each other....how as their individual self became strong, so did their bond together...that's what this new equation represents, how strong and unbreakable. Their bond is....7-1=7 means that, if one member is suffering, if one member is missing, BTS doesn't break down, they don't fall, because now, unlike before, when that member is suffering, when he is missing, those remaining boys will be his support, they will go looking for him. They will pull him out of his hole, because this time, these boys are now strong enough to hold each other up instead of all falling down. They will still suffer together, they will still be affected by the loss of that member, but instead of being vulnerable and giving up. They actually become stronger and pull that member up to them, they pull him out of his sorrow, they show him the path when he's lost, they carry his burden when his shoulders are heavy, they carry him when he can't walk, because they're now strong enough to support each other.

Out of the 3 rappers of BTS Yoongi is the one that speaks to me the most...I feel like I understand every aspect of his personality bc I feel like he is just like me with the same issues. Suga and all BTS are huge mental health advocates and are not afraid to speak up. What brings it to another level is they are writing from their own experience, they allow themselves to be vulnerable and that is something that really drawn us to them. When they talk about mental health, it is not just “it’s gonna be okay” but “your feelings are valid and in the 7 billion people on the planet, there is 7 koren men who are understanding”. As much as I always tear up with this song, your words make me cry all over again. I think it is safe to say, there is one more man who understands as well.

Something really interesting about the Min Yoongi part. For a long time, you would only hear the some of other members call him “Yoongi”. Even the youngest member, Jungkook, only recently started calling him “Yoongi”, growing up calling him “Suga”. Suga even said it was strange to hear Jungkook call him by his real name. And even though the members call him “Yoongi”, Suga has always called himself “Min Suga” instead of “Min Yoongi”. The only times I can truly think of him calling himself “Yoongi” is when he jokes around with how people at airports overseas unusually pronounce it, as “Yunki”. Besides that, it’s always “Suga” when referring to himself. So I feel like maybe he associated “Yoongi” with his past and hardships he had. Very interesting. Just as a fun side note: one of the other members “J-Hope” is kinda similar. He’s one of the other rappers. He also only really goes by “J-Hope” “Hope” or “Hobi”. He has said it sounds weird when people use his real name “Hoseok”.

Excellent reaction. Glad to see a reactor do some strong analysis on one of my all time favorite tracks. Suga uses his Agust D second name as a platform to express thoughts and emotions related to his individual story or what does not fit cleanly into the BTS group concept. As BTS has latitude of expression essentially unseen in K Pop (think the aggression in the Cypher series vs. the aggression in Agust D Agust D), Suga really tends use his Agust D work to be quite personal to the point some think they are listening to a different artist. However he is not a different artist. He is a complex artist. Interestingly, he may at the point in time of The Last have said Min Yoon-gi is dead but nowadays he is much more in touch with his full self. I think in The Last he was trying to say his Persona was taking over his person so much he was losing contact with who he is. So much so Min Yoon-gi was in the past.

My mental health got polluted since I was 13 years old, I was diagnosed to have social anxiety that eventually becomes social phobia, then I got diagnosed to have severe depression at the age of 15. This song means a lot to me because the person that I look up to talks about the issues that we both suffer from. On the day this song released around 2016, I had my major panic attack that strangely connects to his lyrics, because at that day I also hid myself in our campus bathroom and attempted to do su*cide. I'm very thankful to Yoongi and specially BTS because they're the reason why I'm still alive and fighting💜

This song is why Min Yoongi is, and will forever be, my ultimate bias. I cry every time. It's so personal and raw. It speaks deeply of things that matter to many of us. We may not have the fame or his grit, determination, nor his insane talent and deep music skills, but he is speaking to his struggles in a space where so many of us struggle. I look at him and I think if he kept going and fought through it under the devastating circumstances, the emotional and physical pain he was in, well, the least I can do is try as hard and keep on going, even when I want to just give up and crawl under a rock somewhere.

This would be an impressive and powerful show of vulnerability by any artist, but the fact that mental health issues are not talked about and considered taboo in Korea makes it even more brave and impactful to me. I can't imagine the guilt he must have felt over a concert being cancelled last minute because of his panic and phobia....that can't have helped his issues at the time. I'm so happy he was able to have his shoulder issue taken care of recently. That must have been hell to perform through the pain for all these years....I know they all suffer pain from performance related injuries and repetitive stress due to dancing, but his must have been next level.

"The last" is my favorite Agust D song. The first time I heard it, I cried. I didn't understand the lyrics, but I felt like the song spoke to me. So I looked for the text in french and I understood why. I did not have the same experience as him, but I find myself in these words. I have known depression and the pain that goes with it since I was 14 years old. And more than 30 years later, I still fight against it. You are never really healed, and it is very easy to fall back into it, often without realizing it. I understand his experience and this song is a work of art. If you want to hear another song by Suga in which he expresses his emotions, listen to "First Love". She is magnificent. Also listen to "Outro: Tears", from the Rap line, written by Suga. She talks about when the group was planning to go their separate ways.

In fact, a great way to get to know the rapline of BTS is to listen to the songs Intro: Persona, Interlude: Shadow, and Outro: Ego. Each rapper performs solo in the songs, and they give an overview of what the album series Map of the Soul is about. All 3 songs are great, very different from each other, and showcase each rapper’s style. 💜

I always think that "Shadow" is a continuation to this song and "Daechwita" is the next step to it. If you listen to them as an organic piece it is something else for me.

Yoongi is very aware of his platform and he's been very gracious to share his struggles with us as fans . He has said a number of times that he hopes that his words and music will help others. Glad you were introduced to him and are now exploring his works. Your reactions are great you're really listening and understanding and it's appreciated!

Something really happened in that day of the concert. He left a letter in a fan cafe explaining everything about it. I wish I could look for the link so some of you could see it, but you can easily find it on google. Everything will make sense once you’ve read it. Also, thank you for this reaction, Sir! I love how you put so much meaningful words and how you relate things with this song. BTS use their platform in these kinds of things such as mental health, self-love, racism, bullying, political issues, etc. They produce and write almost all of their songs which is very different from the kpop culture and thats one of the reasons why they became very controversial but it is also the reason why they are so different from the other groups. If only people can let different language in and not mind the barrier of language in music and arts...

I think Suga being 'savage' is his defense mechanism cause he suffered a lot I think of all the members his life is more depressing before because his family doesn't support him being a rapper they don't support his music and that makes him more depressed because the people that supposed to support him and his career are the ones who hates it that's why he has suicidal tendencies

People always forget that artist is human too. I'm so enraged by the people that don't allow artist especially K-Pop idol to marry and dating. That's the worst. If we can have a family, then why they can't? Just because they're an artist and they succeed and we are their fans, doesn't mean that we OWN them. They are themselves not anyone else. That's just a sad reality. We hope can change it, slowly but surely.

The only thing I gotta argue is the 18 being your bit. Mental health issues tend to be very precarious in adolescence because of the underdeveloped brains and insane hormone changes. It's why putting kids that age on antidepressants is so tricky and can worsen the condition as much as help. Considering his passions, goals and all the pressures BTS faced at such a young age it's amazing how well he handled it. Thank you for the honest and heartfelt reaction!

the "concert" he mentionned was a concert in japan when he started panicking and had to leave the stage, but he received a lot of hate because of that. i think it's very sad because it's really hard to deal with social anxiety and he got, added to that, hate from his "fans" (i say fans but they're not really fans if they communicate violence, they're just toxic).

Suga is brutally honest. I think the reason he relates to people is becos he doesn't write with an intention to "spread awareness of mental health". He just writes his feelings and turns on the magic. He's just being real, period. I heard him say in an interview once thay he could only write these feelings down when he got better. That's why the song ends in a relatively more hopeful tone than the middle. I guess it was carthartic for him. I hope you get to check out First Love. My only spoiler is it's not about a girl. 😉

What I don't know is if he was 18 years old Global age or Korean age. If it was Global age, he would have been a trainee for about a year with BTS. If it was Korean age, it would have been a year before joining BTS. You might be surprised at how many teenagers have mental health issues, and in South Korea, it was reported that they have the highest suicide rate for Kide ages 10 to 19. All the BTS members open up and share their stories in their music, BTS music and solo music. I believe Suga uses his solo music like a journal, and reflect back on it later. I think what Suga is talking about is he ended up in the bathroom having a severe anxiety attack, and he couldn't go on stage. V was also sick and ended up going to the hospital that day, so they ended up cancelling the concert. I don't think that ever happened again. Suga said he went back to that venue many time and sat in the seats where ARMY's sat and remembered that day. Trying to get the perspective of the fans. He was really hard on himself. I'm glad he worked through that. I think that's what he was talking about, I could be wrong. I know he wrote a letter apologizing to them later. Anyway, he has grown so much. He has said that his new album only has three songs that are more uptempo hard hitting, but most of his album is chill tracks becaus he is no longer angry. That means he has healed. So happy for him.

that's exactly what they're doing and what separates them from some other artists. their music always has impressive lyrics, ever since their debut in 2013 BTS rarely sings/makes a song abt romantic love/love songs. it's usually abt mental health, oppression, women empowerment, their struggles and how they deal/overcome it, loving yourself, facing yourself etc... and they produce, compose and write their own songs as well. that's why ARMYS (their fandom name) pay a lot of attention to their lyrics as well. their album MAP OF THE SOUL:7 AND PERSONA referencing analytic psychology by the swiss psychologist Carl Jung. Their Love Yourself trilogy album is a four-part series made up of three albums and one video release arranged into sections based on a traditional Asian storytelling format: 起 (beginning), 承 (development), 轉 (twist), and結 (conclusion). Through the three albums, BTS tells a story about falling in love, an inevitable breakup(losing yourself because of loving someone), and an epiphany about self-love. idk if you'll notice this comment but there's so much more to their music that some of the mainstream artists don't have. and they use their platform so well, they deliver speeches in UNITED NATION GENERAL ASSEMBLY since 2018 until now

Also I hope you consider looking at the 2 other rappers in BTS as well. RM and j-hope; the thing about all 3 rappers is they are truly so distinct from one another and they have cultivated their own styles really well. They've done songs together as the Rap Line of BTS (check out the cyphers) but they all have their own solo work.

I was diagnosed with anxiaty and started taking madications at 15 and before that I attempted suicide at 13 but nobody really noticed... yeah life is hard dosen't metter the age, I wish a had a better childhood and teen years but is hard... it really is. I'm lucky I meet BTS they made the difference in my life. Suga is my favorite just for his lyrics and the way he makes me feel related to them and I do not feel so alone and selfish for going trough all of this.

About 'that concert' I think if I remember correctly it was in Japan, and Yoongi (Suga) and Taehyung (V) never showed up on stage. Only the other 5 members did and they apologised and said they are canceling the concert. I don't think Bighit ever gave official statment what happened. Well Bighit of course gave a statment, but it was more like: "we apologise, the fans tickets will be refounded, all the members are fine and being looked after" but I dont remember that they ever specified what exacly happened (which I apreciate that BH always tries to keep BTSs privacy as much as they can)
