Surf fishing continues to be difficult with cold fronts shutting down bites and the red tide pushing fish out of the area. I'm attempting to locate some bluefish in surf because they are usually present this time of year. But due to difficult conditions I keep changing my tactics and I start trying to catch some whiting and pompano...but the fish had other plans!

i currently live between Enterprise and Dothan but have been thinking for a couple of years of moving into your area and watching your program has influenced my thinking a lot. I am 72, on Social Security and have lived on or near the water much of my life, first in Savannah with summers in the keys, then near Wilmington, NC, and finally near Charleston, SC. I caught fishing fever at the age of 6 when I caught a 6 pound Jack Crevalle in the Florida Keys. I caught fish off shore Panama City (22# King Mackerel) and Destin (16# Red Sapper) while I attended Auburn and have even fished Gulf Shores some 50+ years ago as I had a roommate from Foley. I had a 19' center console while I lived in the Charleston area and here I caught my most memorable fish, a 40" bull red. After all this, I have to admit that I have only surf fished on the outer banks of NC and I had no idea what I was doing. I did catch a few whiting and croaker, but nothing of any size. Now, here is my primary question: I have replaced both knees in 2017 and I am still of limited mobility. I have an electric scooter that I can upgrade to balloon tires that I use to get around my current area and a Chevy Blazer 4x4 with a attachment on the back for my scooter. Are there ways for me to easily get to decent beach areas without having to walk a good distance, as I have difficulty walking to the rear of Walmart and back. If you can help me, I would gladly charter you at least once a month for a while to learn about surf fishing and about other fishing options in the area. I seriously doubt I will live more than 15 years and I would like to live those years fishing and smelling the ocean and the salt marsh.

Mike if you're still in Charleston I know a few decent spots around here, most do require a little bit of walking but I'm coming down with some kinda inflammation so I can understand what you're going through.

Hello from Connecticut! Seawater freezes at 18* - THAT'S cold, Florida boy. You fish for your kid and like Whiting, so you're alright. PLEASE do a show on 'unbarbing' hooks. Personally, I noticed minimal fish loss and so much more humanity in bending my barbs artfully - in an arch.

Gut/bleed them right after catching & get 'em on ice. You can also use meat from blues in soups or stew, to further separate the oil. I eat them occasionally, but not right on the beach.

Rod saved ya. I use a 6wt 9 1/2 foot rod with 6lb test sometimes even a 4lb leader for Steelhead in rivers up here. They can run over 12 lbs occasionally and in a river they're tough to handle. 20 minutes and more, is not that uncommon to land a big one if they don't break off : ) Nice fish though. Was down near Captiva in late July and the red tide there was horrible. Worst thing I have ever seen and even saw some dead Tarpon along with the thousands of other fish. Worst fishing I have ever experienced down there but I did get a 6+ foot Bull Shark up by Matlacha. We also got some Snook and Ladyfish up there. A few Jacks, too.

Have a question about what to do when a sting ray sticks to the bottom. I had a ray (that I never saw but was convinced as I would see the tail come up into the wave break and seem to whip around). Damn fish locked to the bottom on a sand ocean beach ( no rocks but unless thinking it could have nosed into the edge of the trough i was casting into) and wouldn't move for anything. I had an inexpensive R2F rod that was staked as a backup rod while surf casting of East Hampton, Long Island, NY and god how I wanted to see that fish. 30lb. mono on this guest rod and there wasn't any way to put any pressure on it. Anything I could have done? I tried to pull that fish up for 35 mins before finally cutting the line. Soooo frustrating with beachgoers asking "whatcha got?". Ugh.

I have something similar happen to me last week. I fought off a huge Jack Crevelle with the wrong gear that caught me so un prepared and i couldnt bring it in nor could not even move it a couple of feet. The last try snapped my line and i was very frustrated but made me want to comeback for revenge. If i ever catch another big one and bring it in. I would scream "dont you dare challange me!

I caught a thirty six inch Jack at San Lois pass off of the back about half a mile towards galveston. Right a Ross the street from the rusty hook bait house. That was a fight. One September years ago we were all hooking bullreds at same location. I took a price of shrimp and went to catch me some fresh live bait and I hooked a lady fish a out feel e or fourteen inches on my red rig. I hooked it through the eye and lip and when I looked at it I thought that is perfect hooked for bait. So I took it up to the truck and slit its tail a bit to make it bleed. I cast it our and bout five minutes later I had a bite on it. My friend says hey Dave. I say what. You got one. A said I just put a big bait on. He said I'm telling you you have something. I was using a fifteen good surf rod with a 309 penn reel. What ever it was it never slowed down and never sped up as for as I could tell. That thing pulled so hard I thought it was going to break my rod. I had twenty pound big game one and a red fish leader Whatever it was I did feel it swim but just a little bit. J thought my rod would break and my string began to tingle I tighten my drag a bit and it pull a little drag and quit. Then the same pull a little drag and quit. It continued then to start just taking my drag slowly but sure We'll before it could stop my reel I tightened my drag some Now it was really put a load on all my gear And then nothing. I reeled my line in and leader was gone. The line was frayed or wrinkled in anyway. It appeared as if a knife just cut it. The o ean was very ugle the night before and the water was still pretty rough and just as dirty as it could be. So I really have no idea what I hooked. I have caught several big bullreds before and if it was red it had to be sixty inches or more. May have been a shark are a ray. Who knows. Let me know what you guys think about it by replying. Thanks
