Thankfully she was able to get the subtitles for the on-screen text turned on! At the beginning I was so pissed that the subtitles weren't there, and I was thinking "crap, another YN reaction video ruined because the reactor can't understand the most important texts in the movie!" and then she paused the movie and turned them on. As a Shounen-loving meathead that loves adventure, suspense, and epic fight scenes... I have a soft spot for romance animes... that "I Love You" scene with that BEAUTIFUL soundtrack *that starts to play as she opens and read her hand, had me shaking in chills, the edge of my seat, and unexpected tears started rolling down on my face...* my favorite moment of the movie.

At the time of release, this was the number one movie in Japan. It surpassed Spirited Away in sales too. There was another film released around the same time, "A Silent Voice", which was great as well, but didn't achieve the same success unfortunately. A Silent Voice was absolutely amazing! 8:10 Mitsuha in Taki’s body used “watashi” the feminine/formal version of “I”. She then continues to use “watakushi” (very formal), “boku” which is a masculine version but still rather soft. Mitsuha finally notices and uses “ore” a masculine way of referring to yourself and what Taki usually refers to himself as.
@deutschvanderlinde6900
@deutschvanderlinde6900 Жыл бұрын
Watashi is actually formal, not necessarily feminine. But in colloquial speech only women use that, as Ore is considered non-ladylike. Men can use it too, but it would sound like the Japanese equivalent of "Doth thy mother knowth thou weareth her drapes".

Mitsuha and Taki being in different timelines but still being able to connect was actually explained through the braided cords. It was mentioned that even different times (the cords) can sometimes meet and connect each other (the braid) in life. Mitsuha's red braided cord (the one she uses in her hair) is also an important theme since it symbolizes the Japanese's belief on the "red string of fate" that ultimately connects people who they are destined to be with. In Mitsuha and Taki's case, they were literally connected through that red string.

Years later and watching this react still made me cry. The visuals, and music is just phenomenal. I went in expecting a fun freaky Friday romance so the twist really surprised me and got me super invested as to how the story will resolve itself. Everything about this movie is just beautiful. And the whole "always searching for something, for someone" line kinda relates to us all in a way. Still one, if not the best movie of all time for me.

A detail that makes the "I love you" scene even more emotional is the fact that she was going to write "I love you" as well. You start with a vertical line when you write "Mitsuha" but she started with a horizontal line. "I love you" in Japanese starts with a horizontal line ;-; That's probably also the reason why Taki forgot her name so quickly because he thought it had to start with a horizontal line.

I hate to be the party pooper but if you write her name in Kanji the "三" from 三葉 would be all horizontal no? And if she was to write it in hiragana "み" from みつは would also start with the horizonal line on top. Lastly iirc the stroke order of "好" from 好き starts with the left vertical line downwards. I think she was trying to write her name, but do correct me if im wrong.

There was a Japanese show that reflected on this movie sometime after its release as they noticed its popularity among the older generation keeping it in the movie charts (despite the film being marketed to young adults/teens). They invited some older generation folks to a special screening and placed cameras in the movie theatre towards the audience, then interviewed the people afterwards. Needless to say, many of the old folks were in tears, and noted that the "red string of fate" which is prevalent in Eastern oriental cultures was something they experienced in their own lives - like an invisible bond - some people said they met their spouse/soul mate, or something they were looking for. Here's the TV segment from back then - kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYXWkpl_e9CritU

Makoto Shinkai is a well known director for the beautiful visuals in his movies. Almost all of the locations shown in Kimi No Nawa (Your Name) are real locations or inspired by one. The city based locations (Tokyo) can be visited while the rural areas are inspired. In fact the lake that is shown after the town was destroyed is based on Lake Suwa, which is located in Nagano prefecture (the director's hometown is in the prefecture). There's plenty of sites online to guide anyone who wish to visit these locations (typically called an anime pilgrimage) in Japan. I've done it in 2020 just before the pandemic started and even went to the last scene of the movie (the infamous staircase scene). There was a few others as well from different countries and we shared with each other on tips for other locations as well as for locations in Makoto Shinkai's movie after this (Weathering For You). There's an actual shrine at the top of the staircase and you can see all the memorabilia from fans around the world at the shrine. I highly recommend to set aside a day to do the pilgrimage if you intend to visit Japan. Lake Suwa is definitely the highlight. It's gorgeous and the next best location is the skydeck located in Roppongi Hills.

The red thread of fate/destiny is a major theme in Asian myth (I lived in Asia for 3 years many, MANY years ago). I recommend watching again and pay particular attention to all the times a red ribbon or cord is shown. The 2 lakes form an infinity sign. You can either go with a mystical explanation (Musubi wills it) or a scientific explanation (quantum uncertainty) to explain why they can't remember each other's names bast a few moments. However, once they finally reconnect on the stairs and say their names, they get all their memories back. At least, that's what's been implied by the director. I'd seen just a clip of the movie and knew I'd have to get it, so I bought a Blu-ray version. And then I had to buy a Blu-ray player so I could watch it properly on my big screen. (I also bought "A Silent Voice" in Blu-ray at the same time). I still watch it at least 1x per week and enjoy watching reactions of people coming across this masterpiece for the first time. We all struggle for connection. We all search to find love. I hope you find the destiny you're seeking.

i always say this abt your name, i really liked the story and the visuals but to me what made the movie so great was the soundtrack, and how they placed osts and songs in some specific scenes. This made at least to me the scenes even more emotional. Also i swear i can just randomly hear either a song or an ost and i remember specifically the emotion i felt when i saw that scene for the first time and even drop a tear. Once again, its one of the best soundtracks ive ever heard not just in anime. Im sure that without the soundtrack i personally wouldnt have the movie so highly rated.

If the backgrounds look amazing, it's because Shinkai Makoto, the director, got his start doing background illustrations for various animated works, and his talent there really shows here. People have varying degrees of affinity for his writing and directing, though I have yet to be disappointed by any of his works. Even shorter productions like "She and Her Cat" are pretty powerful.

You should check out Makoto Shinkai's other animations - Voices of a Distant Star. The Place Promised in our Early Days, 5cm Per Second, Garden of Words, Journey to Agartha (aka. The Children Who Chase Lost Voices) and Weathering With You. He has a new one coming out soon too called Suzume no Tojimari.. They all tend to have a bittersweet edge to them, it's just his style.. the way he explores maturity and life through his tales. That can be an acquired taste, but his animation style is undeniably beautiful.

I was in Tokyo around when this movie came out and it was EVERYWHERE. Convenience stores, department stores, shops in Akiba, they were using Your Name in ads and merch and commercials, it was truly everywhere. When I got back to the states I watched it. Yeah they were right to hype it up the way they did. It's become a comfort movie for me.

This is still one of the anime movie I love the most. The message was deep, and filled with emotion. Tear jerkers are right down my alley :P. This movie was also absolutely gorgeous, from the animation to the art. It solidifies why I want to visit Japan. You described it so well, with how they executed the story... sometimes it's hard to nail timeskips without it getting all muddy and confusing.

Your Name hits you hard because it presents strong themes of longing. It's an ache in your heart when you long for something, for someone. An ache that just can't find release until you see the object you are longing for. Such a great movie.

I absolutely love Your Name and this was a fun reaction to watch. I've become a fan of Makato Shinkai's work and I highly recommend checking out Weathering With You. Can't wait for his new movie to come out at the end of this year! Also not his movie, but A Silent Voice is also amazing and brought be to tears. Edit: Just saw your pinned comment nvm XD

Watched this movie in 2017 and have been chasing the high ever since. For anyone who needs to fill the void left by this movie, I’ve seen a couple other movies since that have come close to replicating the same feeling: La la land, Portrait of a lady on fire, eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, arrival. Granted these aren’t animated, but they left me with that same drained yet warm and alive feeling Your Name gave me. If anyone has their own recommendations please let me know, I need more of this feeling lol

Your Name is my second favorite anime film of all time - it deserves all the hype it gets. truly brilliant work in all aspects, really a masterclass in storytelling. ‘Liz and the Blue Bird’ will forever be my favorite anime film (highly recommend you watch Liz and Sound! Euphonium at some point omg) - but Your Name is genuinely near-perfect. i don’t think A Silent Voice is quite as good as Your Name, Weathering With You or Liz and the Blue Bird, but it’s still a profound piece and a great watch. can’t wait to see your reaction!

This movie was expertly done by drawing you along, with the perfect amount of tension, right to the very end. It literally recked me for days after the first time I watched it.

A few things you probably missed: 1) You remember the beginning (and the end too) where they talk about having a dream as if something's missing as they get ready for work? Notice how after they wipe their tears they stop to look at their hands... It's the same hand they tried to write each other's name on 2) In China and Japan there is an idea of an invisible red string connecting two destined lovers. Hence symbology of the string. There are other colors on the ribbon that represent other things too. The center white diagonal stripe symbolizing the comet, the blue around it for the lake(s), etc. 3) There's also this big thing about how the god their family worship is actually a fraction of the comet that's given their family powers to save the village. That's how they have the dance and the tradition to honor their god. The comet actually came at least twice before. To make the lake and the god's underworld shrine. Both times also created craters. So the god is actually the comet and gave the family the power to save it's people 4) And the BIG Whopper. Mitsuha wasn't going to write her name on Taki's hand. You see her start to write from left to right in a straight line, here's the many ways you can write her name, but the way she actually writes her name is with a curved stoke, not a straight one. It's seen when at the end of the first day mistuha is in taki's body (your video has it at 10:52 ). She writes on his body (his hand) her own name and begins it with a curved stroke similar to a reverse C. Instead, it's likely she was going to write sukida or すきだ. While you likely don't recognize it, it's actually in the movie. You can see it on your clip at 33:36 😥 And yes, the director/writer, Makoto Shinkai did comment that mitsuha would have written something else other than her name in a Q&A 😥😥😥

I first saw this movie when it came out in Japan (while I was living there) and I cried bc it was so beautiful and the story was so moving. I moved back to the States shortly afterwards and took my family to see the release States side and cried even harder bc the animation captures life in Japan so accurately and it fully hit me that I wasn't going to be going back there. It's truly one of my favorite films. I'm so surprised it wasn't even nominated for best animated film at the Oscars. All of Makoto Shinkai's (the director) films are beautifully animated though. I recommend Weathering With You (not really a sequel but similar) and The Garden of Words (a short). Also keep your eye out for Suzume no Tojimari which is set to release this Nov.
