ok...this has become one of my favorite anime movies, if not my favorite anime movie. i would protect nishimiya and ishida with my life. aside from the extremely sad depiction of bullying and the beautiful animation, i thought it did a great job at showing what social anxiety and depression is like. it felt almost cathartic to watch this movie and see the characters, especially ishida, come to self-acceptance at the end - i really feel for him and can relate to those feelings of anxiety taking over throughout the movie. i've gotten so many comments from people saying how this movie is pure sadness, and that it is soul-crushing. while i agree there are sad moments (the bullying, suicide attempt, etc.) i honestly felt that after finishing this movie, it was more uplifting than anything. the ending filled me with hope - that things will be okay no matter what hardships come at me. there is a light at the end of the tunnel. and i'm so happy it ended that way. thank you for suggesting this to me, everyone! (also i am sorry (but not really) for the amount of times i say "REALLY?????" in this reaction LMAO that bullying made me furious than anything 😭)

Kawai (the blonde girl) was a passive bully. She'd do things like the singing part, where she started to breath and open her mouth, (which she knew Shoko was watching her) to make Shoko think she was singing, thus getting her in trouble and laughed at. She's also completely only concerned about herself and how she "comes off" to everyone else. With Ueno she at least has the guts to admit that she's terrible. Kawai pretends to be the innocent perfect flower until the end.

To answer the question, yes Kawai was part of it even if a little bit besides not doing anything at 3:26 if you pay attention Kawai actually pretends to start singing to mess with Shoko and you see Shoko look at her. She acts the hero by saying follow me and then plays the Victim to get sympathy Because of her playing victim some people have described her worse then Ueno Kawai's victim BS is more shown in the Manga but it's still present in the movie. Aka when she starts crying when Ishida called her out

One of the most frustratingly realistic parts of the bullying scenes is that there's a lot of subtext there that Shoya already liked Shoko back then but was basically lashing out because he was immature and the peer pressure. You even see him looking at his hands and thinking about when the sign language teacher comes in until Ueno starts complaining.

What I love so much about the story, is how realistic it involves in the word CHANGE, some people change for the better, some change for the worst, some don't ever change and some has you wondering did they change or not? an example is naoka's character we can't really say she's changed or not, just like in real life

I'm impressed you stayed fairly composed. I cried again just watching it here. The main moment for me is Nishimiya's apology to Ishida's mother at the hospital. The painful thing is that Nishimiya already believed she was the one ruining everything socially, but the feeling would presumably grow 100 times stronger realising she couldn't even end her own life without almost causing Ishida to lose his (reinforcing the belief that SHE'S the troublemaker). The deep remorse she shows when apologising hits so hard - you wanna just hug her and let her know none of it was her fault. And yeah, the bullying does make the blood boil. I think it highlights the long-lasting affects that bullying and ostracization can have on people, and the role of forgiveness.
@EitherProductions
@EitherProductions 2 жыл бұрын
To me, it seems that the more one experienced bullying as a kid or feels the guilt of having been a bully, the harder this movie hits. This was one of only two movies to ever make me openly weep (most sad movies/scenes barely affect me), largely because I strongly identified with Ishida's shutting off from others and Nishimiya's habit of blaming herself for everything and hating herself, which happened to me in middle school due to bullying. My mom barely had a reaction because she never went through that kind of stuff and wondered why it's my favorite movie. Everyone has different emotional triggers.
@RoaringTide
@RoaringTide 2 жыл бұрын
@@EitherProductions Absolutely. I imagine that a person who has any kind of connection to bullying would be unlikely to watch this movie without having some sort of reaction. For myself, I was fortunate in that I made friends quite easily growing up, and I was never really subject to any bullying. I still cry at sad media with little resistance though. I guess raw empathy takes over, and I don't have any unhealthy reservations about crying as a dude or anything like that.

If we're talking about trash tier friends, Kawai is at the bottom, below Ueno. That's because Ueno is fully aware of everything, but also decides to change, even though her stubborn and passionate personality makes it difficult. Ueno is a awkward girl who is both passionate and stubborn. You can see that there are signs that she likes Ishida, and will go along with anything he does; when he was nice to Shoko, so was she, as he started to bully her, so did she. RE: The Day at the Park - She was hoping to reconcile Ishida with Shimada, because she felt responsible for being the first person the trash teacher picked to reveal Ishida's bullying, and how that opened the floodgate for everyone to scapegoat and destroy Ishida. Shimada also feels a lot of shame and doesn't feel worthy of any reconciliation; out of consideration for Ishida (and himself, of course) he doesn't dare approach Ishida, even though it's obvious Ueno is still in touch with him and has talked to him about reconciling with Ishida. Ueno projects her own self-hate onto Shoko, because she was the catalyst of Ishida's eventual ostracization and bullying. Kawai, on the other hand, was always a by-stander, had never told people to stop the bullying and is always the "good person" every Japanese person thinks of themselves. Keep out of trouble, stay out of people's business, but abscond all responsibility. Kawaii is the only character that DOESN'T evolve and change. She is the scathing commentary on Japanese culture and its tolerance for many dysfunctional things, such as women's rights, and bullying. using tears to deflect criticism, causing trouble by revealing Ishida's past to his new friends. To absolve her guilt, she thinks of buying her way out with the cranes. It ios the easy way out, as opposed to Ueno, who even begins to learn sign language. The whole movie is all about how bullying is a communal crime and how everyone can be victims of it, even as the bully, or bystander.

To me, she’s not worst than naoka but practically as bad naoka but in a different way. Naoka shows her toxic personality which makes people see that she’s a terrible person and does not want to get along with her. On the other hand, Kawaii does a good job hiding her flaws from people that makes her look innocent but the good thing is kawaii also seems to comfort people that she sees get hurt which makes them feel better. Basically they both are pretty much have annoying and unlikable traits but i wouldn’t say kawaii is worse than naoko tho.😅

@@RedK5 Self-love is not the same as love. It's about not seeing yourself as unworthy to live. It's different than love, which usually refers to romance, which is fine and all, but this goes much deeper. It's a story of how to stop rejecting your own soul, yourself. It's about accepting yourself for who you are, regardless of many, many of your faults about yourself that deep down you know all too well, and to be able to live guilt-free regardless and keep going strong, it's immensely powerful message and it's only fair to emphasize it as such and to separate it as opposed to just 'love' which may potentially even go into the box of 'cheesy teen romance' or what not. I’ve said this before on other A Silent Voice videos, but Shoya is almost a reflection of what I did and had to deal with in my childhood. This movie helped me realize that I can move forward and that the friends I do have truly do care about me. I was at my lowest when watching it, but it helped me know that I wasn’t alone and that I can forgive myself. This is by far my favorite movie of all time just because it’s the only movie that truly changed my life completely. Everytime I see that ending I just lose it and bawl my eyes out. If any of you believe that you aren’t deserving of love, please know that you are loved by someone and that you can change or have changed for the better. It may seem like there’s no light at the end of the tunnel, but you’re just turned around from it. You can find your way, just have faith in yourself to keep one foot in front of the other.

At the end of my last school year one of the boys who was harassing me came to make fun of me, I retorted making him feel ashamed, his own peers laughed at him, he came up and we got into the fight. There the bullying ended, because in any similar situation, losing or winning the fight, I would do the same, and the boys saw it in my eyes. Some even tried to be my friends after the occasion. I still cry every time I watch it, I really relate to this movie. I'd take Ueno any day rather than Kawai. Ueno is real. She likes Ishida and she felt bad for turning against him when things went south during their elementary days, this can be seen in the Ferris wheel scene although she tried to put the blame on Nishimiya. She was also trying to help Nishimiya at first but she turned on her too because it was kind of getting hard for her. She was getting protective over Ishida especially on the bridge. She wants him to reconcile with his old friends and she also is jealous of Nishimiya. Later on, she acknowledges her mistakes. she stayed true to herself and she was willing to learn sign language. Unlike Kawai who did bully Nishimiya and acts like the victim every time a problem comes. She laughed at Nishimiya, she tricked her into sining early then act all good by trying to "correct" her when she was the reason Nishimiya sang early in the first place. Kawai didn't even apologize for what she did, instead she acts like she did nothing. Man I hate people like her. Ueno I can deal with but Kawai is just a different type of bs. The classroom scene where she singled out Ishida really ticked me off like she didn't bully Nishimiya too.

People do get better. This movie hits due to my history with being on the receiving end of torment from bullies from 6th grade to high school from kids and teachers. It takes a long time to forgive. It's important to reach it for people to heal. But along the way, as many of the participants got older, they matured and tried to atone. One even telling me they had a substance abuse problem, and they took their anger in the world out on me. I forgave him the moment he asked for it. This is just an amazing reminder that as long as we draw breath, we can be better for ourselves, and those around us.

This movie is one of my favorites. I watched it for the first time last year with my little sister. I’m almost done with college, and she was in 8th grade, but bc I was off at college most of the time and she lived with our mother (our parents are divorced) I hadn’t seen her much in a few years. We had been super close before our parents separated, as best of friends as 2 kids 10 years apart in age could be. Watching this with her, and seeing her watch it, and talk about it, and about how she was going through some of the same feelings really destroyed me, and made me feel like a failure of an older brother, but it also helped me reconnect with her in a way I didn’t think was possible anymore. It makes you realize the small moments, like sitting and watching a random anime movie with your sister, are really the big moments. I think this movie not only saved my sister, but it helped save me in ways I never would have expected. Truly a work of art.

The X on the faces is something that hits close to me, when you are hated/bullied/betrayed by so many you dont put effort into remembering faces and this applies to people you never met because you think they will just hurt you too, your memory becomes a blur as to what they looked like. You really only remember the faces of people who you enjoyed being with or people who were kind, anyone else repels you because you assume the worst and your fear takes over. Great visual representation of that feeling in this movie.

The moment you realize this is not a story about a guy falling in love with a girl, but about a guy learning to love himself again changes your whole perspective. An extremely emotional journey that one man takes simply to arrive at an apology is beautiful

My favorite moment is definitely the ending. It's already so difficult letting go of everything that you've made yourself believe in for the longest time but to pair it with everything else that Ishida experienced. This was truly such a heartwarming scene and just the way they did it really. I cried like a baby during that scene! Plus the parallels between Shoko and Shoya is so profound, down to the very minute actions, they have something in common. Great reaction like always, Alana!

I think Ueno is one of the most interesting characters in the movie. She is a perfect contra mirror to Kawai, and most people don't like her on their first watch. But the more you rewatch the movie, you realice that she never lies. She is absolutely, brutaly, honest. That's for example why she doesn't judge Shoja alone for the past, and instead says they are all equaly to blame. She was also the first one to try "open up" to Shoko by helping her out with notes in class, which in return lead to her own grades suffering, which is probably why she judges Shoko so hard for never trying to open up herselfe (sticking to the note book instead of trying to practice talking, hidding behind smiles and "I'm sorrys" instead of showing how she really feels, etc.) Uenos brutal honesty is what makes her the exact oposite of Kawai, who is all about lies and trying to seem inosent. Kawai even lies to herselfe by claiming she was completely inosent back than, completely denying that she laughed along, watched and covered for the others. The oposite of Ueno, who does put a lot of blame on Shoko for beeing the catalist/starting point, but also realices that she herselfe is to blame as well for everything ending up the way it did. Kawai deflects blame and acountability, while Ueno accepts it and thinks they are all to blame. I think someone could probably write an entire character study about Kawai and Ueno beeing oposites! xD Hell, even their color paletes are basically oposites! Kawai has light hair and eyes, while Ueno has dark hair and eyes!

Thats all true, also regarding the manga. Ueno is the only person who reacts to Shoya like to any other person. She is jealous to her and she shows that. Shoko is her enemy in love and she shows that. She is honest. I am pity for her.

This movie hits so hard because it's so relatable and realistic. Hurting others, experiencing shame and regret for it, and learning to live with and forgive your own mistakes is something all people experience as they grow into adulthood. We see bits of ourselves in most or all the characters which really increases the audiences empathy for them.

If you ever get the time, Read the Manga. It Really fleshes out the bullying part, everyone was culpable. And it dives way deeper into Ishida's social anxiety & not knowing how to act because of it.

God I really can’t watch this without crying, even a reaction video. Especially the scene where Shoko is asking for forgiveness, but also the scenes leading up to the fireworks. Seeing Ishida laughing too hard at a movie, constantly suggesting plans, always smiling and stuff…it doesn’t explicitly say it, but I’m pretty sure I know that feeling well. If anyone you know is struggling with mental health, and they suddenly start being really cheerful and upbeat out of nowhere, then keep a close eye on them. It might be a sign that they’re planning to do something. That feeling of resolve, of finally deciding to take action can be intoxicating and powerful. If you see that, do Not let this person out of your sight if you can avoid it. Ask them tough questions, and get them help.

I now realized that ishida only started bullying once when people started to target Shoko. I think he was interested in her that’s why he was confused and interested by sign language and was shocked when she revealed that she’s deaf. He also realized she was trying to say something but he was weirded out. I feel like he only started bullying her because he knew people made fun of shoko and if he tries be friends with her he would get made fun of so he decided to bully more and more ad everyone would laugh at him. He also realized Shimada left because she was getting made fun of do to being friends with shoko making him even more worry about being nice to her. I think it started with ueno saying that they had another sho he was kinda scared that people would start to make fun of him just cause the association. He was always the scape goat. He would do it in public while the others did it in private. He was the poster boy, the scapegoat in case they found out that’s why they never stopped him cause he was doing what they wanted to do but knew the repercussions. I don’t know how I keep finding new stuff about this movie despite watching it 5 times

it's like an onion. theres a ton of subtle details in the movie that you never realized. Like how yuzuru wears shoyo's shoes throughout the film or what caused yuzuru to be overprotective of her sister (The dream sequences of flashbacks such as shoko bleeding or shoko telling yuzuru she wants to die).

It was so sad to see Nishimiya's perspective of how she blamed herself as well as Ishido's perspective of betrayal and guilt. They both felt like living was difficult because they were the root of problems. It's so heartbreaking. And then the ending is so heartwarming.

I caught this movie when I was still dealing with some dark depression, but was thankfully on my way out and getting better. It hit me emotionally like a truck and I SCREAMED at the screen when Shoko was going to jump. Thankful for the happy ending and it was very cathartic afterwards. I also agree that the major theme was about forgiveness both for others and probably even more so for yourself. We are all such flawed human beings and we def need each other to get through everything and be happy. Really enjoyed your reactions! Thank you!

I gotta be honest. I never hated Ishida the entire movie, even in the beginning. As someone who most would likely consider an asshole, I see things from a perspective I think many people wouldn't. It didn't seem like he originally going to be mean to her, and only started bullying once the class started turning on her. Plus, once I saw the first time he bullied her, I instantly understood why he was going to jump off the bridge. I just don't have it in me to hate someone who I know is so destroyed by guilt over their actions that they resort to that. Peer pressure ruined his life, and got thrown to the wolves by his so called friends who were doing the same. There is no room in my heart for hatred towards such a person. Pity perhaps, but not hatred.

that last scene when all the masks fall, and he feels that he can finally be free from the burden he has been carrying all his life, all the regrets even tho they still live with him, he finally gave himself a second chance, a second chance to live, to be accepted, be loved and to be happy. its such a strong scene, in many many ways, the music made it even better, i can't watch this without getting emotional, its a mix of so many feelings together. i've watched a reaction by a therapist, where he says: depression doesnt go away, it doesnt lift for some people, but there is a capacity to feel, there is a capacity to experience joy, the cure for many things is connection, and we may think that no one wants to connect with me, but we just need to find the right people. i think this sums up everything ishida felts during the movie, thats why the last scene hits so hard, the weight of that burden, of all the feelings, of all that depression, was too heavy, and to feel at least for that momment, lighter, to feel that he was able to connect with people that loves him again...was a beautiful composition, probably one of the most beautiful scenes from all animes that i've watch (and i watched more then a thousand animes in general). loved your reaction, i was drawn to your channel with the your name reaction on my recommendation list after i was looking for the song from that movie (which i love btw), thanks for showing me this movie again, i get emotional, but it's really beautiful, a work of art if i may say. cheers from Brazil!

Perhaps it's because I've read the manga and the movie had less time to show Nishimiya's mother, but *I can't stress enough how underappreciated the scene of her bowing down to Ishida's mother is*. Nishimiya's mom has basically two defining traits: - she hates and resents the kid who bullied her daughter with a passion and could seemingly never forgive him - she is emotionally distant from her deaf daughter (both daughters, really) and barely ever shows any emotions in general The first time Ishida's mom went to apologize to Nishimiya's mom for her son being a bully, we see her coming back with her earring RIPPED OFF her ear, bleeding. That's an incredible way to show how much actually dwells beneath that stone-faced woman whose kid was abused. Even if she doesn't show that for one reason or another, she loves her daughter(s) with a PASSION and if you ever, EVER hurt her, you and your family are never gonna be forgiven… And then she kneels, in public, to apologize to the same mother of that same bully because he got hurt saving Shouko's life. Maybe before this point you thought she was emotionally distant from Shouko because she really didn't care. Maybe you thought she was just pissed at a bully who admittedly ruined a bunch of expensive hearing aids. Maybe you thought she was only trying to save face whenever she acted in defense of Shouko, maybe you thought she was just a prideful, angry person who held a grudge. That scene barges into the kitchen and goes on a rampage to make sure no other option remains on the table: Shouko's mom f*ckin' loves her. Always has, always will, whether she's capable of showing it properly or not. No pride, no grudge, no anger, even the most justified anger possible, will stop her from showing gratitude for her daughter's miraculously preserved life. The fact that the only other moments that show her motherly love (even if, again, you could've interpreted them differently) do it through angry acts of violence only makes this one scene of absolute humility resonate so much more.

It's a movie that many can identify themselves in, not for the bullying (well, not for me), but for the other things, like anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts or reedemption. The way he fights against his past to try to not only have her as a friend but to make a change to himself. It's like the motto of the movie says: "Sometimes, all you need is to learn to listen". It's a strong phrase that describes well all of this, since sometimes we just need to see better what the other is going through, try to understand what it is like to be them, so that only then, we can trully understand what we have done to them and finally make a change. You seem like a really smart person, you got most of the messages and signs on your first watch. I had to watch it more than once to understand some things, lol.
