It was required reading in 4th grade and I read the whole thing and loved it and read the whole series. I would get in trouble for reading in class id rush to get tests done so i could read after and my teachers who had been teaching for thirty plus years said this was the first time they had to have a talk with the parents because a child was reading. After I finished all the series, including the Kane chronicles, I was waiting for magnus chase to come out and I started reading Percy Jackson’s Greek gods and heroes and then I started watching overly sarcastic productions and now I’m reading Dionysian plays, I finished the Iliad, and I’m about to start the odyssey

@@deaconwedmore3685 I started getting into the books right around when Last Olympian was released. But my obsession predates Percy Jackson: I was a huge fan since my parents bought me D'Aulaires Book of Greek Myths when I was six or seven (2000/2001). Then even more so with the age of mythology game. I participated in a mythology bee in eighth grade, and had my copy of Edith Hamilton’s Greek Mythology in eighth grade class. Ironically, the Latin history teacher at my middle school was the very guy Rick based Mr. Brunner/Chiron off of. More recently, ten years ago, I spent quite a bit of time majoring in ancient history. One of my classes was dedicated completely to reading the Iliad and Odyssey and studying them

I like how Zeus, Poseiden, and Hades kind of act like you'd expect them to based on birth order. Zeus, the youngest brother who loves to manipulate to get his way. Poseiden is the one who's a little rebellious and doesn't like to be restrained. But in the end, he plays peacemaker by surrendering to spare his son. And Hades, as the oldest brother, is willing to let his younger brothers have their slap fight because he sees himself as more mature than they are.

Luke's story actually devastates me because his reasons for hating the gods are completely valid. They make total sense. When he tells Percy that they ARE friends he MEANS it. He genuinely believes that he's doing this for the benefit for all demigods. He thinks he's protecting them. He's only 19 and Kronos, Lord of Time and the Titans, has completely manipulated him and warped his brain. Yes, Percy, Annabeth and Grover are small, but Luke is just a kid, too! He's been hurt and abandoned and uncared for. He ran away from home and lived on the streets with Thalia and Annabeth till they made their way to camp. Not to mention losing one of his only friends (Thalia) BECAUSE of the gods. He has every reason to hate the gods and want to see their downfall. It's just that Kronos got to him first and pushed him to an extent where now he's chasing his goal to a level that's too far.

Just non-spoiler-y context to help you appreciate some of the little details a little bit more! 1. It was VERY big for annabeth to give her necklace to Percy- not only does each bead commemorate each year she's spent at camp half-blood, the ring on it is from her dad, which we know she has a rocky relationship with. So her giving her most prized possession (second only to her invisibility hat) is big- it's like she's moving on and accepting her past through what Percy has taught her 2. annabeth being present during the Luke betrayal was not in the book, but to me makes the betrayal WAY more impactful. We don't know all of Luke and annabeth's backstory yet in the show, but they are like brother and sister, and he didn't want her to be there to see it. His face and the way he said "annabeth" when she takes off the cap is SO sad because we know she must really be holding it together seeing her "big brother" do this. And what's crazy is that in the beginning of the show before percy started to change her perspective on the gods, she would have never joined Luke, but even now as a developing character, she is on Percy's side 😭 remember in episode 3 when Percy mentioned how he didn't want Luke on the quest cause he knew Luke and annabeth would always side together. Ugh its so amazing to me how Percy has had such an impact on her

Just listing their reason, “Gabe is a lot harsher of a presence in the book,” Steinberg tells TVLine. “When you’re reading a story, you can read past the parts that could be upsetting if you’ve stopped to give them more thought. You don’t really get to do that with the show. It’s all in your face and it’s all presented in a much louder way.”

Yeah, I wish he could've been portrayed more accurately to how he was in the books, but it's a Disney kid's show, so I get why they didn't do that.
@musicislife-dk3nq7 ай бұрын
I do agree however I think they’re kind of doing this with the intention of readers knowing how Gabe is and assuming he’s abusive so they don’t have to show it. Because I believe it was Rick’s wife who made a statement that they didn’t show Gabe physically being abusive because of it being gruesome and potentially being triggering for people who are/have been victims of domestic violence and abuse. And because of that, I think they might hint at him being physically abusive if we get later seasons, bc in the books Percy didn’t know Gabe was physically abusing Sally for a while, so I think in a later season they may hint at it or have Sally say Gabe was abusive without having to show it.

The first season can be a little difficult to get into, but it is all in service of setting up the following three seasons to be some of the best written and acted tv of the last decade (or more). It is very difficult to explain why it is good without spoiling, but if you liked Toby Stephens in this, it is nothing compared to his performance in Black Sails. Everything about it is just perfection. ✨ I love how you noticed the clapping sounds being muted partly because he's dissasociating and partly because he doesn't care about glory. And to add, the sounds coming back when Annabeth hugged him because she's his tether to the world. This also is a perfect representation of their partnership dynamic. The mutual understanding and respect without saying anything. Her making strategic moves and Percy trusting her without pause. So biblically accurate Percabeth. Also, when you clocked in the changing beat when Luke was talking (it's the Lightning Theif theme btw, whole show soundtrack is on spotify) and the color during the fireworks scene. Aaaah perfection. There are more layers to the Luke betrayal scene that I hope I can discuss because it was really perfectly executed but it will spoil you. 😅 So, I'll save it for later seasons if it's already safe to mention. My brain did not expect that a twist like that could happen. Charlie's scenes were so well executed and written. I'm so excited to see where his character goes in this adaptation. Extremely talented actors and the kids were just perfect for their roles! Thank you again for reacting to this

Looks like season 2 is confirmed! Also, it was amazing how early you caught on to Luke, the clues were there, but I think they did a great job at making it subtle enough that most people wouldn't be totally expecting it. But at the same time, they left enough small clues that it doesn't feel totally out of nowhere (like Hans from Frozen did, for example... haha)

I'm so glad you enjoyed this series - wasn't it fun? And yes, we need a Season 2 announcement ASAP! As for reading the books, I can attest it would be very difficult not to read them all once you started; they're easy reads and very addictive. Also, if you read them after seeing the full series🤞you'll be able to appreciate the Easter eggs. There's even one from "The Chalice of the Gods" in Episode 1, which I haven't seen anyone catch. 😏

Been anxiously awaiting your reaction! So glad to see you enjoyed it. As a kid, I was blown away by Luke’s betrayal and I guess that’s fitting but growing up all the signs were so obvious lol especially as a writer myself 😂

Watching you catch on to Luke's betrayal throughout your reaction videos has been THRILLING!! I've waited with anticipation for each of your videos. I super hope we get a season 2 announcement soon, I don't know how long I can wait

Loved your celebrations during this episode. I said it would have been worth the screeching sound and it really would have been. But thank you for looking out for us. 💜 Knowing the books definitely has not made the series less enjoyable, but I would have seen some things differently. So I can see where you are coming from with waiting. They originally planned for five seasons (one for each book), but there are six books now and the way the sixth one ended, I'd assume there is more coming up. We may get lucky and get seven or eight seasons. I really hope Disney does continue. And there are more books in the same universe, so who knows what will happen.

As someone who grew up with these books, it's been a delight watching you as a non-book reader AND as someone with a background in film react to this show! I've been looking forward to this last reaction video. I thought this last episode blew us out of the water-- literally! It's been so refreshing getting your insights and takes and seeing you just vibe with how fun the concept was. Also, you were one of the few non-book readers I talked to who saw the twist coming without spoilers, so serious props to you!

Oh, Jacqui, I had been checking your channel several times a day ever since last Wednesday because to be honest, your reaction videos were almost as fun to watch as the show itself. 😉 As a long-time fan of Rick Riordan's books, it was so much fun to relive the adventures again through fresh eyes from your POV as a non-reader. I thought it was really cool how quick-witted and observant you were. I think from all the non-readers' watch-alongs I've seen on KZbin, you were the only one who was suspicious against Luke. Also, you noticed the little error with the wooden pearls on the necklace, I would never have noticed that, bravo! You know, if you decided to watch Black Sails, I would consider watching along, because I've become quite a fan of Poseidon / Toby Stephens, too, and I haven't watched that show yet. Little side note on the issue of Gabe Ugliano (stepdad): In the books, he isn't just a jerk but a truly abusive husband, mentally and physically. So when we book readers realised his character got somewhat softened for the series, there had been week-long discussions in the fandom whether or not he really deserved to die in the end. Without giving anything away because I know you want to read the books at some point: The way they resolved it in the after-credit scene did his character justice (curiosity killed Gabe), the solution in the book was much harsher. Here's hoping for season two, fingers crossed!

Yeah the changes they made to socks and sandals guy were pretty weird. In the books, the guy is horrible, he is super abusive to sally and Percy, and that includes physical abuse. In the end it’s sally who finds the box, guesses what’s inside without opening it because of something Percy told her, and she uses the head on purpose to turn socks and sandals to stone, she then proceeds to sell him as a statue and makes enough money to start working on her dream job (writer) instead of working in a candy store.

There were a lot of changes from the book but mainly in terms of ordering and pacing which your comment about Luke's story shows it made sense and allowed the show to head into the quest faster leaving important scenes like Luke's sword training to be given in flashbacks. Also appreciated the scattering of Sally flashbacks so she remained a constant throughout the series. Gabe's fate made sense as we were given an obnoxious-nosy version who brought about his own demise rather than the more violent-abusive version of the book who met a more deliberate end that impacted the moral image we have of certain characters. The other changes I quite liked was to make the trio apply knowledge of Greek history to identify traps and dangers BEFORE they had to face them rather than go "oh, I should have realise" AFTER walking blindly into obviously dodgy situations. In the book it felt more nervous kids overlooking the clues due to panic/exhaustion etc., here the years of training Annabeth and Grover had and Percy's determination are given a bit more respect. On the negative it felt a bit rushed at times with little space to flesh out day-to-day life in Camp; the creeping dread of the Lotus Casino; the exhaustion of the long road trip... and also Olympus should be busy and lived-in and not deserted - the set designers also fell into the trap of making it look like Greek ruins (rubble on floor, broken columns etc.) And of course a couple of things were rushed past too like being told to see visit the oracle in the attic, the meaning of the beads, the nature of Luke's sword and Clarisse's spear - which would all add to the richness of the story and would only have needed a couple of minutes here and there. But generally very good, hopefully even better next year.

RIP Lance Reddick. I really love how they handled Zeus in the show, it's very accurate to the myths. We tend to have this idea of Zeus (probably by association with the Christian God) that he is a loving god, but that couldn't be further from the truth. In Greek mythology, Zeus is arrogant, cocky, self-absorbed and extremely insecure. He doesn't really care about humans, unless he's taking them to bed. As a sidenote, it's kind of weird that the most accurate representations of Zeus in media are Percy Jackson and Thor: Love and Thunder...

I like how Luke is the betrayer and is the lightning thief, it makes so much sense, like he is the “gifted” son out of the Hermes children or the one Hermes cares a lot about and he just so happens to be an excellent thief, just like his father since Hermes is literally the god of thieves, the answer was basically staring us in the face 😂

Please do watch and react to the documentary. I just finished it the other day and I got a bit emotional because you could really see how much this show means to the cast and crew and how much love and dedication they gave to live up to a faithful adaptation of the book. Also, THE SHOW HAS BEEN RENEWED FOR A SEASON 2!!!

i need to say that Gabe was awfull in the books, sally never raise her voice againts him and enable his behaivour because in that way gabe was even more awfull and so his smell of human was more heavy and protect percy from the monsters. Sally (books and show) is such a strong woman, but in the books was because she give up everything, even her own safety by letting this man abuse her. in the book she is the one that kill gabe with medusa head, and i absolutly love her for that

Epic Finale Reaction! The fight between Percy and Ares was good. I definitely love how Percy confront Zeus regardless of what could happen, and how we get to see Poseidon’s love for Percy, when he not only intervenes, but surrenders to his younger brother. But I think the best thing that they definitely did adapt well for the finale was the revelation of Luke’s betrayal. Not only how they had used the flashback of sparring practice to foreshadow Luke and Percy’s duel, but how surprisingly Annabeth was there to witness it as well. You can see how this act of betrayal affected all three of them. Luke was a brother to Annabeth, was a friend to Percy, and even he still felt hurt for what he did to them. I definitely did love seeing how not only do our Celestial Trio make the pact to meet back for camp regardless, but we get to see the aftermath of Kronos still planning his revenge and needs Percy still to make it possible. The fact that for the post credit scene was to see Gabe actually turn to stone was well executed. I cannot wait for the second season as I’m more interested to see how they adapt a new certain eye catching character. 🧑🏼🦱👩🏿🦱🧑🏾🦱🧑🏻🦱🔱⚡️⚔️🌊💙💛🤍

The reason she kept Socks with Sandals around for so long was for the same reason Annabeth sat Percy near the bathroom on the bus. He had a horrible scent that masked their location.

So far you are one of the best reactors out here! 😁😇 So I’m hoping there will be second season so I can see more of your reactions! About the show I think after the movies it was amazingly executed and sadly many readers are too picky on details that the “book author” decided to change just because of the movies. If there were not so bad movies before, I believe, the people actually enjoying this show would be more. Luke’s portrayal was perfection and it does make sense. As a book reader you actually feel sad about him and everything he went through, one of the best book characters ever written to my mind. About last scene and Kronos, remember it is Greeks, everything is about prophecy’s and probably if they release the next season, you will hear the ultimate prophecy that will take place. But that for another season 🤭 Gabe and his unfortunate accident in the end, in the series, he was a turd but he did not deserve to die but they had to keep it just to continue with him being gone completely. In the books he totally deserved death he was abusive and also alcoholic and it was said all the time about how he abused sally and Percy. Great reaction and welcome to the PJO fandom 😇

Now that you've completed the first season, you should read the first book and make a video comparing the book to all the things that were done differently in the TV series. That way, you can find out what actually happens in the book and give us your thoughts on the changes that were made in the adaptation.

Toby Stephens step-mum is Patricia Quinn who is Magneta from Rocky Horror Picture Show (and a redhead). Aside from Black Sails, Toby was also in the reboot of Lost in Space which you might enjoy to react to (don't need to watch the OG series or movie to enjoy it) I also think Clarisse and Percy had a chat before meeting Luke. She says "I'll explain" so when she got back to Camp and saw Clarisse and also realised that neither her nor Grover betrayed Percy and the only one who Percy classed as a friend was Luke. I also think the line "you will lose what matters most" was aimed at Percy and Clarisse (Luke's friendship which was important to Percy (the burning of the blue candy and telling his mum he had made some real friends). I also love that the nickname of Percy, Annabeth and Grover is the Golden Trio. Great reaction
