Immortal Technique was born in Lima Peru. He is of mostly Amerindian descent, and also has Spanish, French and African ancestry. His family immigrated to Harlem, New York, in 1980 to escape the Peruvian Civil War. During his teenage years, he was arrested multiple times due in part to what he has said was "selfish and childish" behavior. He attended Hunter College High School on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, where his classmates included Chris Hayes and Lin-Manuel Miranda, whom he bullied, although the two later became friends. Shortly after enrolling in Pennsylvania State University, he was arrested and charged with assault-related offenses due to his involvement in an altercation between fellow students; the charges stemming from this incident led to him being incarcerated for a year. After being paroled, he took political science classes at Baruch College in New York City for two semesters at the behest of his father, who allowed Coronel to live with him on the condition that he went to school. Honing his rapping skills in jail, and unable to find decent wage-paying employment after his release, he began selling his music on the streets of New York and battling with other MCs. This, coupled with his victories in numerous freestyle rap competitions of the New York underground hip hop scene such as Rocksteady Anniversary and Braggin Rites, led to his reputation as a ferocious Battle MC, one of his most famous battle' was against deceased Rhymesayers MC, Eyedea in 2000. Immortal Technique visits prisons to speak to youth and working with immigrant rights activists, and raising money for children's hospitals overseas. He created a writing grant program for high-school students as well. In June 2008, Immortal Technique partnered with Omeid International, a non-profit human rights organization, and dubbed the work as "The Green Light Project". With the profits of the album The 3rd World, he traveled to Kabul, Afghanistan, to help Omeid build an orphanage without any corporate or external funding. The orphanage, having been successfully established, currently houses over 20 orphaned children from Kabul.

No one is ever ready when it comes to Immortal Technique Dance with the Devil, he's one who base his songs off the art of story telling,he was actually questioned by the feds due to similar occurrences that happened in neighborhoods, this story is true based off a guy from prison he met when he was incarcerated so when he said "listen when I tell you the story is true cause ei was with Billy jacobs" it refers to him being locked up with him and feels like after learning the story he became a part of it

@@LeahReuben It is supposed to, the song is meant for people especially young men who are going down the wrong path, it makes them stop and think. It is meant to scar us so we don't dance with the devil. A lot of people think the song should be banned or the artist shouldn't have made it so vivid, but then it wouldn't make you feel this way and it wouldn't have the same effect.

Immortal Technique is amazing. Enjoyed his songs for a long time. The only reason he never got huge is because he didn't sell himself to some record label. This story and how it unfolds is so brutal but genius. It’s like a dark slow decent into evil and when you think it can’t get worse it punches you over and over at the end so that last confession feels real. It isn’t but that’s not the point, this type of evil exists and corrupts those willing to give in.

Omg, THANK YOU. You picked the right video if you ask me. The animated version is missing what I think are important parts of the song, including the bridge between when he puts the gun to her head and then when it comes back in with him thinking about the platinum and ice. They just completely skip it, and I think it’s an important moment of reflection time for the audience. If anyone is like me, they pondered if killing her might actually be the kindest thing at that point.. Plus you woulda missed the sample of Prodigy saying, “I’m falling and I can’t turn back.” Thanks again! 🎶🖤🎶

The story is true and he heard about it while locked up from what I can remember. Immortal Technique is as real as they come. He spends his money building things for youths that are in trouble to help out as he was one of them. He even built a school on the Middle East in a very dangerous area of Afghanistan. My Peruvian brother is a good one and he has so many other great songs. His use of words and timing is very unique. I suggest reviewing Big Pun, “Beware” off of the great album called “Capital Punishment”. He just might be the greatest dead MC / Lyricist. Also, review Immortal’s view on the N word on that VLAD interview. It may open your mind to understand.

Song gives me the shivers everytime I listen. Reminds me of a kid I knew in college(high school to Americans) who was arrested for setting up a kid to arrange a meetkng to sort out a petty drug debt and then stabbed him to death. I thought about stuff he used to say to me like if I want really money I should sell cocaine and talkin about how hed send his girl outside to do his sales for him. It's True the devil grows in the hearts of selfish and wicked. He was a conflicted kid now dancing with the devil on a cold cell block. Whenever I hear this song I see his face and think about him but cant remember his voice just certain lines he said to me which were the devil showing himself that I never clocked onto at that time. He was very street wise I was out of my element.

First of his songs I ever heard. The lyrics just get more and more painful until every word feels like a knife stabbing you in the gut. One of the most soul crushing pieces of poetry I have stumbled upon. It is just a story, but it still gets me every time, he really is "good with words" as Joan Baez would say. I think the worst about this song is the realization how many people choose to go this path every single day, hoping to come on top, but in reality ending up in prison or dead while destroying countless lives along the way to their own funeral.

So late to this video but this story is based on a real life story that Immortal technique had heard by an inmate when he was in prison.

He has said that he wanted to show how the black community is eating itself alive. No better way to do it than being absolutely brutal and honest. He also added in an interview that saying he was there was just for dramatic effect, but he heard similar stories in prison.

As far as.we.know it is just a story...But I am sure it has real world influences. but he did time in prison for assault. Dude just use to get into fights but never anything like that. Definitely check out more of his music. Years ago "the martyr" album was free on viper records. You could download the album or have them mail you a CD. The money made off his previous album ...I think it was called "3rd world" ...was used to build a school/orphanage for boys and girls in Afghanistan. The left over money he used to produce the martyr album so his fans didn't have to pay. He had a cool documentary about building the school/orphanage on KZbin at one point. Might still be there. As for making music I haven't seen anything in a while. He spends most of his time as an "activist" . Glad you checked out the song. It is truly a hip hop masterpiece.

5:06 YES, he’s giving the cold hard truths. Love your insight into what this song is about halfway through. This song gave me a glimpse into “street life” far more than any other show or movie or song or anything ever did for me before. He’s a beautiful lyricist. If you’re open-minded enough, he drops a ton of “truth bombs” all over the media and the governments and churches and schools, etc., in the song “Tell the Truth.” I recommend one of the red animated versions as I don’t think there’s an official video, but those ones have a cool ending. But to be honest, you may not want to upload it on your KZbin channel depending on your audience, but it’s a great song if you wanna check it out.

I had one of my best friend get dragged into this gang life he was forced to do this by sick individuals in his circle, this kid was very intelligent straight A student he really wanted to be an engineer an change the world but he got dragged into this life an everything change. Those sick individuals influenced him to kill his brother rape his sister an rape/kill his mother............. he killed himself after talking with me for a whole 7 hour chat non stop he layed everything out, telling me he wanted out of that life but couldn't leave, this guy still had good in him I felt it he told me that this was the last conversation he will ever have with anyone he told me these individuals gave him pills to kill himself an he did, I remember his quote before hanging up to me this haunts me everyday, "remember me for the good I could've done, the good I could've become, an the good I could've of brought, remember my voice this is my last time I will speak to u, I hope an pray everything good happens to u, thank you for being my only friend....." he committed suicide at age 16. rip kevin save me a seat beside u ill be there shortly
