After the launch of the Guitar Fetish SBS (Steve Brown Sound) guitars last year, many guitarists had complaints: The frets are too small! Only relic finishes? Are these necks REALLY roasted maple?? Thankfully GFS has addressed these issues in their new super strat SBS models. AND they have released an even more inexpensive model! Let's check these out.
The guitars are here: www.guitarfetish.com/SBS-Guit...

Great review as always! We live in such great times in terms of guitar build quality per dollar spent. I looked at Guitar Fetish when I was looking for a Tele-style. It came down to them and Michael Kelly. Although I went with the latter and love that guitar, I like the GF Slick series also, especially the modular pickups. Anyway, at these prices, I can indulge myself sometimes. Your channel is always a go-to resource. My last purchase was a Westcreek Revenge (Explorer-style) which one of your videos helped sell me on. Another awesome axe! Keep up the great work!!

I have bought 3 Slick SL 59s over the years as well as the Slick P bass, and all were good except one I bought second hand with a bum 11th fret. By good, I mean leveled crowned & polished frets, no unexpected issues (p90 noise doesn't count), no swaps or surgery needed. I have no problem ordering one of these. Hell, they should port those necks over to the Slick line! Guy I sold the bum one to plays in a classic rock cover band, still has it, it was either worth getting fixed or wasn't an issue for him. A Slick SL54 & an SBS would be a killer live gig pair that does basically everything, durable sound and play great, that costs less than a single brand name import.

Great break down on the Floyd Rose stuff. And yes, it is confusing. Too many versions of the FR. The licensed one on my Dean ML Dime Shadow is pretty bad. So bad I just won't play it until I replace it. I have a FR special on my EVH wolfgang standard. It is actually ok after some tinkering and adjusting. But, I think I am gonna try a Gotoh 1996 soon in the Dean. If that goes well, I'll put one in the EVH too. Gotoh is made in Japan, there is one version, and I only hear good things.

Thank you for clearing this all up Max... I was one of the overly critical people who didn't care for their use of the term "Real Deal" Floyd and I believed from the wording on the website that the neck was just a finish and wasn't actually roasted. I was up in the air about this or the Squier Affinity with the same Floyd and I ended up buying the Squier because their messaging made it clear the neck was roasted maple.. That was the deciding factor, had I known these are actually roasted I may have chose differently as the Squier was $469.00. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Squier, but these SBS guitars definitely embrace more of the 80's shred feel and design. Thank you again for clearing all of this up!!

FWIW the original 2023 line didn't have roasted wood, but a finish that looked like it. This was spelled out in the ad, but perhaps subtly. Most people rightly said "cheese" and looked elsewhere, so now they are roasted maple going forward. The old version is now discounted. Eons ago they sold unpotted "kmz professional" paf type pickups and advertised them as such. The OEM or GFS decided to only offer them potted after a certain point. I have a pair of the unpotted ones, they exist, and the ad copy was updated in a similar fashion after the change.

Thank you Maxx you really cleared up a very important note about how it is listed, the FINISH word on the roasted maple necks really throws me for a loop as well. And it is sad that we would need be so precise because the way manufacturers ripped people off in the past. This is great insurance to know for sure, because without that i would not buy it. Thanks to you i can now buy in confidence. Thank you so much max and SBS for making such a good guitar. If they keep the price the same, i am sure they would dominate this market. Because even jackson and ibanez resorted to using that molding fretboard wood we all hate on thousands upon thousands of guitars in this price range, it was very hurtful to see with a shape like the jackson warrior. Well i have had problems with non original floyds in the past, so i wonder if truly the floyd rose special is as bad as they say? How long does the knife edge hold up before it chips? i have heard much good things from a licensed floyd that i like to use. Well can we case harden the baseplate of the 'Special'? i am shall just machine one out of 4150 heat treated steel if it doesn't work out.
@SolaChristus
@SolaChristus 5 ай бұрын
The Floyd Special baseplate is already hardened. The FR website states this and I know that it is because I’ve added Graphtech Piezos to them which requires using a dremel to enlarged 6 slots in them…they are insanely tough. The major weakness of the Special is the zinc saddles and block….other than that I’ve found they can work just fine

These guitars are insanely good for the price. I got the custom model in arttic white HH with the reverse headstock. I had a chrome original Floyd and chrome gotoh tuners laying around for a while that I’ve been wanting to do something with. For $259 I figured what the hell, and took a chance. The generic Floyd Rose was okay, it worked. When I swapped them I couldn’t believe how good it played after a little setup tweaking. The neck feels awesome and is really flamey. All the hardware is chrome now instead of black, but I kinda like that better anyway. I also had some jazz bass knobs that I swapped out too. I think they look better too. I also blocked the Floyd to dive only. That’s just a personal preference. But I just can’t get over how well it plays and sounds for $260. I had planned to swap out the pickups too, but It’s not a priority. The stock ones sound fine. I am going to get rid of the gloss finish on the back of the neck and do the Ernie ball oil/wax thing. Now I’m curious about what the $100 difference between the custom and showroom models gets you. The Floyd is probably definitely better, but I’m wondering if the neck is better or they’re the same. Or if the alder/poplar body makes a difference. If the Floyd on the showroom model isn’t as good as a Floyd Rose special I’d probably go with the Custom model and spend the $100 on a better Floyd Rose if the custom and showroom models both have the same neck and finish quality. I’m not going to buy a showroom model to find out. I don’t want another Floyd Rose guitar. I have a love/hate thing with Floyd Rose guitars and everyone I’ve had I’ve always traded or sold. I’ll keep this one though.

I purchased one and made a few modifications…. That I recommend you do to make it incredible… brass tremolo block for Ibanez edge $29.95, red noiseless tremolo springs $9.99 and Floyd Rose turbo tremolo arm $19.95…. The turbo arm has the Allen wrench built into it…. So for changing strings you always have your wrench… the mounting mechanism is better too… the brass block and springs make it feel better and sustain longer. I also put tremolo stops on all floating bridge guitars… just for set up ease… once it’s intonated and set up, the tremolo stop gets backed off and the bridge is full floating… that’s completely optional but it really helps you quickly intonate and dial in your guitar… I highly recommend these guitars … they flat rock !!!!

One thing I saw immediately on both of these guitars (the purple one has it worse than the yellow) is that the strings don't sit centered along the fretboard, meaning that there's a misalignment from the bridge or neck pocket, making the low-E quite sit far from the edge, but conversely the high-e is pushed right to the very end, which will make your string slip each time you do a pull-off.

Yep, you cleared that up nicely, Max... thanks for that. First, I hate the color of roasted maple and find it sad that it's now a "trend". Second, I'm pretty sure GF is just a distributor and don't know much about actual guitar construction or quality, and lastly... I'd never spend a penny buying one of these. Good video though.

How is the set up out of the box - any fret buzz? You say the frets are smaller - I assume they are smaller than jumbo and/or close to medium jumbo? Thanx!

Is the pickup routing on the purple axe off kilter? The spacing between the top of the pups seems wider than the lower portion.

Look at how much fretboard there is on the low E. Very little on the high E. Something is not lining up on that purple one.

The yellow ones Body shape is the Jackson Soloist shape and the Purple is the Charvel san dimas shape. It is not very difficult to see these are modeled after Charvel/Jackson and the neck spec's even have the same .750" at the first fret and .780" at the 12th fret. The exact same as a Charvel. What i would do is get the one for $259 buy a Gotoh 1996T trem for it and a set of Duncans and that thing would be off the hook for under $700!

Hey Max, Can you explain why guitars with a trem and locking nut have a string tree or string bar in the case of these guitars? Thanks!
@GuitarMAXMusic
@GuitarMAXMusic 5 ай бұрын
Great question! It's because the surface of the locking nut is not flat, but it angles down towards the fretboard. So you need string trees or a string retaining bar to keep the strings pressed down flat onto the surface of the nut. If this wasn't done, then the strings would go way out of tune when you locked the string clamps on the nut. I hope that all makes sense.

I noticed recently that some of the listings on the GFS site have changed a little. For what it’s worth, it looks like they changed some stuff and the necks are actually listed as “roasted maple necks”

I don’t trust them. I got one last year and it was undoubtedly the worst guitar I ever played. The neck sticks a whole inch out from the body, making it feel weird. Worst part though was that the fret work was EXTREMELY poor!!! Lots of uneven frets and dead spots! Also the neck felt weird and fat not like a good neck, but more like a 2x4!

@@tomaslopez2940 I bought before I saw the new Maxx video about the frets. So I bought a relic with the stated "medium-jumbo" frets. They're not "med-jumbo". They're more like small. I buy my guitars with med-jumbo up to ESP's seemingly extra- jumbo. I had a Washburn A5 in the 80's that had these little flat pieces of wire they called frets. I don't remember what size they said they were but they were small and bending strings sucked. These are like that Washburn

I almost brought the purple relic one with reverse headstock, I absolutely loved it, however I started seeing some of the reviews and videos was definitely concerning. I might give these a second look, I'd still prefer the relic purple though, for some reason it's the only relic guitar I actually liked lol.

IMHO the best bet would be the VS260 then add a few layers of lacquer to it.. coat of clear, polish good to go .. wonder if they'd give up the paint code so we could do this.. not really into the relic'd bodies but its alder is attractive.. jumbo frets, whatever.. or leave it rub oil into the wood that's exposed will darken it up significantly, polish that oil in, burnish it.. its like the old Charvel CSX bodies. more square whatever long as its contoured . . .

Would be cool if they released a version of these with a fixed bridge like a Hipshot or Hipshot knockoff like Jackson uses. I would personally rather have a fixed bridge than a cheap 'licensed' FR or the lowest of the low end 'Real' FR bridge.

There is something very wrong with string alignment on the purple guitar, you can see it especially higher up down the neck where 6th string is much further from the edge than the 1st, and the 1st is too close to the edge. Other guitars don’t have that problem though, and just generally speaking they are pretty awesome.

I'd like the yellow one, but in purple! For that amount of money, you could buy a better bridge, and upgrade the wiring, and maybe the pickups, and it would still be cheaper than a lot of super Strat's? I'd have stainless steel frets put on as well.

The thing uys... I do have the money for a Charvel. And I've been wanting a San Dimas for ages... But I keep thinking this year they'll finally start giving them contoured heel joints... But they don't! 🙆‍♂️ They do on the Dinkies (got one - they're great)... and they have just started to give the slightest corner off on the 24 fret san dimas Japanese and relicced ones... But I want a San Dimas...standard. With a contoured heel! Jet guitars are doing a really cool one. And now SBS. But neither seem quite up to standard... I think I'll buy Charvel and just deal with the heel...
