And prices skyrockected there to the point they cant afford live in there own home state no more. I see engines that designed that way made late 50's early 60's. We can do better but not overnight. I love when I seen Woman WV State Police pick up a big loud mouth male protester & body slamed them on ground over slapping her in her face. Wrong Mistake. He did not move for over 5 mins. KO him. Great video again, thank you. Just a tip - take the hole air cleaner off, when servicing it. No risk of dropping the hole cup of oil into your engine compartment. Daily checks can be done by just undoing the two snap locks and lowering the cup a few centimeters for inspection. Everything as described in TM9-803 chapter 73.

My 1977 Ford 1 ton truck had a factory heavy duty air cleaner,and sure enough it was an oil bath unit. Had a factory intermittent wiper,unusual for that year make and model. Do a full LOF once a month,grease the front end twice a month,change the air cleaner oil once a month,remove and clean meticulously every second month. Enough of a pain and somewhat messy. That truck never broke without warning me first. Back when Ford built a simple,strong vehicle. Best investment I ever made was the factory shop manual series.

Oil bath air filters were common on many, if not most, American cars well into the 1950s. My grandmother's 1953 Ford F-series truck had an oil-bath air filter, with lines stamped into it to make the correct oil level, and a sticker telling how often to change the oil, how to clean it and what weight oil to use depending on summer or winter temperatures. A 1954 Plymouth BELVEDERE Coupe a friend has (and he drives it almost every day) still has an oil bath filter, as did my 1953 Ford Fordor...my first car BTW, got it in 1971 for $50. I also remember most small engines for such as mowers also had oil bath cleaners, but car companies realized they can sell you a LOT of paper filters. KA-CHING! Irony here Is I convert all my vehicles to K&N oil gauze air filters, they are cleanable and re-oilable. They come with a million-mile guarantee, and are more efficient after 10,000 miles that a new paper filter, if I remember the paperwork correctly. I clean mine once a year (probably overkill), that's about every 20K miles. NO, this is not an ad, I've been using them since I found one on a motorcycle I bought about 24 years ago..and still have that bike. Took it from 32K miles to 153K miles.

Almost all US made vehicles had oil bath air filters back when the Jeep was designed, it wasn't just a military or industrial thing, they all had them. Paper air filters really didn't come into common usage until after WW2. One thing about paper filters whether it's air or oil, the dirtier they get the better they filter, the problem is when they get so dirty that they restrict flow, especially with a lot of modern oil filters that have a bypass in them, your oil pressure will be normal but you'll be circulating unfiltered oil through your engine.

Other reason the oil bath air cleaner is a must for carb fitted engines is that due to the self cleaning by oil spray of the upper filter (most likely packed with coconut coir) means the air restriction to the engine will not change as long as one keeps up on when to clean out the dirt out of the oil in the very bottom of the air cleaner. With paper filters as soon as you run the engine it is clogging up with even the very finest dust with every mile. This slowly but surely causes the air to get harder and harder to suck into the engine. Which in turn with a carb results in more and more fuel getting sucked into the engine so it runs more and more richer. Which can result in so much fuel getting into the cylinders that is washes off the oil and ruins the pistons and cylinders due to lack of lubrication. With electronic fuel injection the air sensor in the exhaust tells the computer to cut down on how much fuel the injectors spray, so it does not get too rich of fuel mixture.

Cyclone filters work. In a sandstorm in the Sahara I filled the dish in 1h and kept the secondary paperfilter spotless. Its NOT for topend lubrication..its to keep your paperelement from failing and dust killing bearing surfaces and seals in your engine. Industrialquality paperelements are not cheap either..not your orange fram.

Nice little Jeep, but with some inherent and interesting design quirks. -- And it's history has British roots, in 1930 Austin of England founded the American Austin Car Company, which eventually was renamed the American Bantam Car Company. This company provided the basic design for the jeep, truly a great vehicle.

I had the same problem. My solution was a wing-nut on the brush guard to body. And leave the bolt slightly loose on the MP-50 to brush h-guard. When I want my top bows up, I take the wing-nut off. Remove the bolt, rotate the brush-guard and pull them out. Reverse process. To rotate and attach brushguard to body. It is a lot easier than removing the spare every time I want the top up or down. Nobody any wiser.

Maybe mentioned elsewhere in the comments: There is more than one type of oil-bath filter. This one is much different than other American automotive filters from the 30's through the 50's, and different than my old Yamaha Tri-Moto 125 two-stroke three-wheeled ATV (man, I wish I still had that thing). Most Oil-bath filters I'm familiar with use capillary action to wick oil into a thin filter membrane, where the oil in the filter element captures the dust particles. This requires frequent cleaning with solvent and the re-application of oil. It's also very restrictive: Air doesn't move through a mesh with oil in it very easily. The advantage is that it's a reusable system, no need to get a new paper filter, just wash the old one. Perhaps your system might be better described as an "oil sump filter." The filter isn't in a "bath" at all. I think as you described, it's a rather cleaver system. I'm not sure how effective the filter material above the oil sump is, perhaps it makes contact with the oil, and therefore also works as a "bath..." but you didn't describe that bit. Turning the air back and fourth through the filter is inefficient, but it's already a Flat-Head, so it's already inefficient. I doubt much is lost in induction. With an OHV engine, that might change.

Great video,looking forward to seeing more. Not all Jeep’s are built the same. Great grandpa started his automotive repair business here in Southern Illinois in the 20’s,I’ve heard stories about the WW-II Willys Jeeps since I was little from his son my grandfather. The WW-II era Jeep’s were built by several different auto makers under contract. Grandpa waited 6 weeks for transmission parts for one of those Jeep’s that had a mostly Jeep drivetrain but the transmission case itself was filled with a mix of Dodge and Jeep gears and shafts. He also talked about some of the wartime stuff being mixed with Ford and Studebaker parts. I myself worked on a federal construction job and learned firsthand that the US government giving contracts or projects to the lowest bidder isn’t the brightest idea. Anyway,keep up the great work and I’m sure glad to see other people interested in the history that got us to the technological point we’re at today.

Best way to renew oil from air filter is removing clamp that connects filter to metal duct to carburettor, unscrew four wing screws that fix filter body against firewall and simply remove it in order to proceed to oil replacement. Five minutes is more than enough for this unless you also decide to wash with gasoline the metallic core that is inside ( you should do that once in a while). That’s the way I do with my Willys MB from 42! 😎

It's not a Jeep answer. But look at the Ford 2n,8n and 9n tractor's they used the same system. It's a great system as you said for dusty condition's. At that time yes when it got time to clean you would just dump it somewhere close. If there was a wartime motor pool they just dump it on the ground. Most likely in a hole they dug and when they moved on cover it and head out. I have a 1949 Ford 8n tractor and the drain hole for the oil pan is 2 1/2 inch hole. Even catching it in a pan is hard.

I agree with that totally. I think the bracket should actually be forward of the top of the wheel arch. Personally, the best option is to position it just left of the jerry can bracket on the back panel. Remove one of the footman loops and put it instead on the top of the bracket. Works a treat. It might not be wartime correct but its tidy and your jeep will still fit up the narrowest alleyway. Whose to say what correct in a wartime field modification.

Actually, why not put a fly nut on the brush guard on the under side of the brush guard where it meets the Jeep body? (and maybe another one on the other end so it can be loosened quickly) Then when you want to put the top up, instead of having to remove the spare tire (bummer), you just undo the flynut (or whatever they're called), twist the brush guard out of the way, put the top up, and reattach the brush guard.

Maybe there's a Mil-spec for how much the lower top bow is to be bent? ;-) I thought one of the headlights could be moved to aid in repairs?

Is it just me, or does the picture of the woman painting the star onto the jeep look like the antennae is mounted forward of the tire well as opposed to behind the tire well as it is mounted in the "factory position"?

I am backwards, a 2,25 petrol has a oil bath filter... a 4.6 V8 has a paper filter. if i use a oil bath per cylinder bank i can upgrade to a better filter unit.

As someone who works in the engineering field your a bit off on the air filter. As with anything there are trade-offs. The oil bath design as you mentioned is simple and won't clog, however it isn't very effective, and let's fine particles through. HOWEVER, the life expectancy of the jeep was only 6 months, so they didn't care if the engine lifespan was reduced. Paper filters are more effective but clog. Personally I'll trade the extra maintenance of a paper filter for the added bonus of less mess and longer engine life. Cheers.

The beauty of an oil bath air filter is that all you need is gasoline to clean it and 30 weight motor oil. Something that is always in the inventory of the army at the time. Also where are you going to find a paper element in a Third World country?

Nice spare
@TairnKA
@TairnKA Жыл бұрын
You may not need to remove the spare completely, just enough to get the bows by? I was wondering if an oil bath unit "requires" new oil or can old oil be used, thinking the only difference is the old oil lubrication properties is lessoned or gone and there's contaminates (metal, water, fuel) and if it's just the former, why not?

Then again Willys wasn't making any percentage off the oil bath air filters, but like the disposable razors with a paper filter you bought a replacement every so often. More money!

Here's a question for you. When you fill the radiator up and drive it around for a while and then park it. Does any water flow out the over flow while cooling down. Mine will drop down some and stay a little low from the top. It has never overheated.
@michaelvrooman5681
@michaelvrooman5681 2 жыл бұрын
Any vehicle without an over flow tank will do that. When heated to operating temp, the coolant will expand a certain amount. That pushes excess coolant out of the overflow outlet. Then when it cools off it contracts the same amount. When you remove the cap the coolant will be lower in the radiator. If you do not want to lose the coolant, add a small aftermarket over flow tank and hook a hose from the outlet under the cap to it. Then add a proper overflow radiator cap. It will catch the coolant when it expands and return it to the radiator as it cools
