Alcohol and cigarettes were not banned during communism, but only licensed Bulgarian brands were sold, which no longer exist, with the exception of the "Sunny Beach" brandy. On the other hand, people made homemade brandy and wine for personal consumption. Greetings from Varna, Bulgaria!

Alcohol and cigarets were never illegal in Bulgaria. It is even funny to think that. Bulgaria was one of the largest producers of cigarets. It was illegal to make and sell unlicensed alcohol from your garage like it is now. But making your own and buying from shops was always legal and actually cheep. By the 90s most of the families will produce their own wine and rakia from grapes or fruits. When I was a child in the 80s the very normal thing was to drink after school from the slightly fermented grape juice “ blagushka or shira” before it turned to wine :). It is so so weird to hear that alcohol was forbidden 😂as you can be 10 and buy your father cigarets and alcohol

Sofia was founded 8100 years ago and is not only the oldest city in Europe but one of the oldest cities in the world. Rome, which was founded in 753 BC is like a newborn baby compared to Sophia, which was founded 6100 BC or 5347 years before Rome. Two of the oldest churches in the world, built in the early 4th century, are located in the center of Sofia, the rotunda of Saint George and Saint Sophia, after which the Bulgarian capital is named.

2:15 Converting to muslam was the law in the Ottoman empire. Christians would get severely punished for resisting. Any Christian church in the empire had to be shorter than a Muslim riding a horse. There have been a lot of mass murders because the Bulgarians refused the conversion. Christians had to pay higher taxes and had a bonus tax - the blood tax (devshirme). It involved the Ottoman soldiers going from door to door in settlements looking for young, strong Christian boys, and if a kid was Christian, but a girl or a weak and ugly boy, they had the full right to kill them in place. Once they have collected the young boys, they would bring them to deeper parts of the empire and convert them to Muslim, training them in a very brutal way and basically turning them into super soldiers. Those soldiers were the bodyguards of the ruler and a substantial part of the army. Those soldiers (who are just brainwashed Bulgarians) would burn and ravage settlements when the empire felt dissatisfied. Some events associated with the whole Ottoman empires leadership in Bulgaria are countless times Bulgarians have rebeled and failed, and the bloody punishments after attempts to be free (Batak after the April Rebellion). The whole thing is very well documented by the country's finest writers - Ivan Vasov, Hristo Botev, etc. The Ottoman empire left a huge mark in the history of Bulgaria, but it has made a lot of beautiful literature and a reason for Bulgarians to be proud

Bro, you have not lived, until you try bulgarian chicken with rice (in oven) with Кисело мляко (sour milk - the bulgarian milk) on top, or Musaka with sour milk on top, its perfection! Also, 9:56 it is bulgarian lev - лев which comes from the old bulgarian word from the old bulgarian language - левъ which means lion. 12:35 we call those клек шоп, duck/croutch shop because you have to croutch to shop from it :D 13:45 you are right, we are the fastest dying country in the world, due to low birth rates and emigration. 13:59 during the late summer, most of the people are out of the capital and near the seaside on a vacation this is why there are fewer people on the streets, however Sofia is pretty much 70% of Bulgaria's population, due to work deficiency in smaller towns.

Man, where have you been? Glad to see you again and especially in the country of my forefathers. If you are still there and want to relax and enjoy a very mellow and scenic mountain town, then I suggest Bansko. I really think that will will like it but read up in it and decide yourself Sly. Keep up your travels. Great to see a video from you again and I’m So surprised to see you in Sofia. Plovdiv is another excellent and ancient city. You would like Plovdiv too but there’s a lot of possibilities in that small country just be careful with taxis and gypsies. Just saw you eating and you eat like a Bulgarian too! In the capital, Sofia, and Plovdiv as well as resorts on the Black Sea prices are higher. Check out Bansko 😊🍀I’m very impressed about your knowledge of things there! Alcohol was legal in communist times. I know because I visited there. Talk about head movements for yes and no when you find out.

@Sly why don't you ever show your interactions with the locals? Doing so would add more value and personality to your videos. Locals are just as important as food and monuments. Just a suggestion

I went to Bulgaria only for a day, but their ladies are mesmerizing, their food simple looking but unforgettable, just a place that you need to visit at least twice.

I visit Sofia, Bulgaria 🇧🇬 in August 2021 and I didn’t encounter many people who spoke English and it was hot 100 degrees Fahrenheit. I also drank the water.

visiting Bulgaria or any Balkan city in the summer that's not near the sea is a bad idea. Its not surprising, the temperatures are always like 40 degrees. Also Sofia is great, but you should really try with Plovdiv-more history, ancient Roman stadium, architecture....or Sunny beach if you like night life and parties

@@Simona0707 yes I agree, most of Europe has been very hot this summer.

It’s cause during the summer most of the younger people leave the city for vacations or going back to their hometowns. I live in the centre of Sofia and right now in September it’s full of tourists and expats now that holiday season is over. Honestly 1/4th of the convos I hear on the street are in English

Sofia is a working city, so the weekend it's mostly empty from most people who work, they live near by. And yes the cyrilyc is invented in Bulgaria.

Another reason for the quiteness in the city these weeks is that a great number of people are out of the city for vacation on the Black See or in Greece. In september it will be much more different:)
