Jiu jitsu made me start eating better and wanting to do s&c to get better. Ended up losing 45lbs and feeling better than I ever have.

You know Kieren, when I was watching your original video, I didn't LIKE what you were saying but deep down, I knew it to be true. And the reason I say so is because I am a person who was very very unfit and I wanted to start BJJ to get fit while also learning something useful. As opposed to just like lifting weights and training at a normal gym all the time. I quickly realised it wasn't exactly feasible because even two minutes of light rolling would gas me out completely. That's when I realised that, you do have to get fit before you start BJJ not as a matter of gatekeeping but so you can survive. To give some more perspective, when I say unfit I mean if I walk up a flight of stairs I'm out of breath already. That's how bad I was. Then now when I watch this video I ALSO agree with what you saying. Absolutely jiu-jitsu can be the motivating saving grace that a lot of people need in their lives that make them better equipped to eat healthier and train more. That's just what it does for people and that's why the world is kinda obsessed and enamoured with BJJ as a lifestyle. So I do know what you mean when you say it is kind of gatekeeping to say that BJJ is only for fit people and that it should be accessible to everyone. As I mentioned the accessibility of it to everyone is a big part of the reason why the world loves it. So yeah. It comes down to individual cases. If you are not in such a terrible physical condition as myself that you physically CAN manage rolling and sparring with people however many times a week you go, then it's totally fine. You can train at your level. Not everyone is training to be a competitor of any kind. But if you ARE like me, then I absolutely would advise approaching it in a way such that your BJJ training is kept a little light at the beginning and at least for about 3 or even better 6 months you focus primarily on number 1 nutrition and number 2 cardio and strength training. As you see yourself come into your own and take shape, especially if you have been out of shape your whole life as I have been, then you can train BJJ at higher levels and it will ABSOLUTELY help you get in even better shape faster than anything else. The KEY is whether you are physically able to survive on the mats or not. If you are not physically able if you just cannot do it, then you have to do some work off the mats unfortunately there really is no other way. Somebody like Keiren most likely has been fit their entire life so they can't relate but take it from me. It does take a lot be able to admit when you are wrong and more importantly, to learn from your past experiences and modify your opinions and ideologies for the better, and that shows a lot of character. Kudos to you for doing that.

Thank you so much for this comment, I totally agree with what you're saying 100% I have been fit for my entire adult life and it comes with a touch of arrogance and a dash of naivety sometimes, but working with BJJ guys and striving to make this "hobby" my career has made me realise that it really can be more than just fitness for people. Thanks for sharing your perspective / story!

Try to tap earlier when u get your arm caught. Usually holding this for a few sec a few times per training hurts you joints

@@Traderealista im the one who makes my peers tap all the time and yet i get home with wrecked elbows. If i do bjj 2 days in a row the pain is so horrible it feels like my elbows are gonna break in half. Im 37 so i think ages plays a huge factor here.

@@Babayaga130 what belt are you? well maybe if you make them tap all the time is because you put so much physical effort on it, BJJ trainings shall be more about flow and technique, ofc you should be exhaust when you finish, but not full of pain. We say, there is no medal at rolling

@@Traderealista im white belt and yes could be that im puting a lot of strengh to it resulting in a lot of pain in my elbows. Im doing daily streches/ weights and it does help but because of this pain i can only do bjj twice a week.

I was 24 when i started jiu jitsu and had similar issues. I had severe pain in my elbows whenever i trained. I took magnesium but they really didn't help. What i found helpful is readjusting my game and being mindful of my grips and how much strength i was using during live rolls. I've been training more and less pain but i do find myself having these issues if i train too much and try to use too much strength @@Babayaga130

I pulled (maybe tore?) my left hamstring yesterday running sprints (was on my 10th or so after running 2 miles). At first I thought it was my cellphone moving back in my shorts and slapping the back of my leg but I thought I heard a pop through my earbuds. Came up limping but the limping got less and less and I walked home after pullups/chinups. I'm supposed to go to jiu jitsu today but am still unsure if I will go. I mean, I paid so..I'm always having to Freeze my jiu jitsu this year and last for ok, COVID last October plus some crazy rashes I've never had (changed diet to carnivore to get rid of it). All this plus fasting 75 hours (first time ever) and intermittent up until May cause a weightloss of 205 lbs down to 158 lbs at 6'2." So I eat/build myself back up to 180 through the Summer never missing jiu jitsu until mid-July when I break my left middle finger in no-gi vs 220+ former wrestlers/gungho ex-military (at least 3 of em that day)- I kept going one week later thinking it was just jammed like my right ring finger had been. So I go back to jiu-jitsu three weeks ago because I'd went on another freeze of classes due to a month vacation out of country. Now this, a hamstring tear, but I feel like I can still attend today. Going to Chiropractor right now.

Well when you think about it, the reason that saying doesn’t work for bjj is because bjj is a sport, a hobby, a passion, something you do for fun. Where as military is a job, it’s something you’re expected to perform at a certain standard, and that saying works for other jobs as well (ie learn math to become a mathematician, don’t become a mathematician to learn math)
