Sasuke is a good character and even an enjoyable character. My problem when I was reading the Manga, was Naruto being obsessed with him. It became annoying hearing everyone talking about him. They could have wanted to save him and still loved him, without saying his name every two seconds. Watching Shippuden now, his moments are really good. I just watched the Kabuto fight with Itachi and Sasuke and it's a really good time. His conversation with Itachi makes sense. His motivation to destory the leaf makes sense. He hasn't been in the Leaf for three years and he grew up hating basically everyone. Him telling Itachi he doesn't care what he wants, he understands him, but will still destory the leaf no matter what. That was good. Of course, he would still hate them, why wouldn't he?

You missed one of the greatest things about Sasuke from early Shippuden: he will take down entire battle fields of soldiers and not actually kill any of them. When asked about this by Orochimaru all he says is that "There's only one person I want to kill". He stays true to this personal moral code basically up until the Itachi fight, never directly killing them on the spot.

Sasuke was also really smart in that last chapter. He did the math: Sarada was telling him Boruto was innocent, he went and saw...that Momoshiki wasn't inside Kawaki, like memories told him. The math didn't add up. So he looked at the situation and realized that his memories were wrong and ignored them. And all of that because he was willing to take a risk because his daughter told him so.

I really love Kishimoto’s idea to make Sasuke leave the village because back when I was a kid and saw this it blew my mind. Seeing one of the main characters “turn to the dark side” didn’t really happen permanently in shows, maybe an arc or so but Sasuke turned for their entire second half of the series. I think we take for granted how ambitious and groundbreaking this move was for Kishimoto to take. One of the reasons Naruto is so unique in its story telling.

‘Turning to the dark side’ or, in writing, a ‘face heel turn’ is definitely not a new concept, nor do i think sasuke is a perfect example of this. Anakin Skywalker, Arthas to the lich king, harvey dent to name a few are examples of this. I would not consider sasuke as a character being what made Naruto’s writing unique

You usually have a bad guy become good or even a good guy has a one off arc where they align with "bad guy" but it usually doesn't last long. Sasuke was seen as a villain for half the series even though he wasn't really a bad guy more like an adversary.

As much as it must have hurt you, this is honestly the best kind of content. Too many people drift to 100% love or 100% hate for a character or idea or even real-life person or group, when in reality _this_ is what's hiding under the surface in all of us. If you're honest with yourself when looking over the totality of a character, you'll find things you like and things you dislike. It's not "being wishy-washy" or "betraying your love for the character", it's being fair and keeping yourself honest. I wish more people did that...

That created a hate for the village that quite literally took his entire family away from him and that in tandem with having a Mangekyo Sharingan its no wonder he decided to destroy the village.. the only thing he ever did that i didnt like was almost kill karin. Outside of that his actions are very understandable

​@@Itachi_Uchiha7283Even though the manga is called Naruto, an argument could be made that Naruto and Sasuke are dual protagonists after the timeskip with opposite ideals so the plot armour is understandable. Why is it a problem that Sasuke had comrades to save him from damn near everything including the collapsed chest and particle style jutsu? Naruto still had far more plot armour because of his comrades and KURAMA who was plot armour personified which would saved him in almost every fight. So you touch on Itachi's Sacrifice but he wouldn't have had to make it if he wasn't manipulated by the leaders of the Leaf village to genocide his clan. After Itachi's death, from Sasuke's point of view he found out that was being manipulated by Itachi who was also being manipulated by the leaf village leaders to murder all of their relatives and then covered it up by making his Itachi take the fall for the whole thing. Just because Itachi sacrificed himself doesn't mean that Sasuke has to follow his wishes. It is okay for Sasuke to not follow his manipulative and abusive brother's wishes that would turn him into a lapdog for the government that orchestrated the genocide of all their relatives after decades of systemic mistreatment. I think the mental and physical torture that Itachi put Sasuke through was unnecessary and was of his own accord. In the war arc, Itachi even says that he could have done things differently and that he was wrong to go about it in the manner that he did. Itachi admits that he caused Sasuke to become rogue by using Sasuke's hatred to manipulate him because he wanted Sasuke to be the one to kill him. Itachi later says that he loves Sasuke no matter what path he takes.

The whole Itachi twist and Sasuke vowing revenge on konoha was one of the best plotline kishi gave and Sasuke should've got revenge. He wasn't being an asshole, if your own family was killed by your govt you would hate it as well. His motivation was the most grounded and it made perfect sense.

Our memories of the early Sasuke was the reason why he deserved redemption. Sasuke's situation was so extreme that his friends couldn't understand his pain. If his brother itachi had left him alone he probably wouldn't have gone rogue.

Yea people really ignore the real reason sasuke went rogue had little to do with naruto. He was doubting his own growth already because of gaara and naruto then itachi shows up and showed him the gap is just as large as ever before forcing him to rewatch the massacre on repeat 100s of times again. At this point sasuke is hungry for power and Orochimaru literally offered him power on a silver platter. It was an all consuming hatred and need for revenge that made sasuke leave and he had to cut ties because he realized they were in the way. Hell, he almost ended his own ambition twice by trying to save naruto on the bridge and later being willing to help protect Sakura vs gaara. In his mind, the village was making him soft and if he wanted to beat itachi he couldnt be soft. He had to be cold and powerful.

i disagree with nick's interpretation of sasuke's actions on the bridge in the land of waves arc. you only find out after the fact that haku's attack was non-lethal. as far as naruto and sasuke were concerned, the attack was meant to kill. sasuke had no reason to believe naruto was strong enough, skilled enough or smart enough to survive the battle after him. paraphrasing a bit, he didn't think about what he was doing he just moved to protect, essentially sacrificing himself for a comrad. to me that showed that underneath his brooding and edge he was a fundamentally selfless person... at least until shippuden

(Part of why he confronted itachi was to save Naruto) He was too weak to actually save him so staying would mean he effectively would have been too weak for a second encounter. Yes Nick, even with Naruto and Kakashis help he would have stagnated eventually and lost even worse to Itachi. HELL would not even have CM2. Just CM1 and be about the same as Anko in that regard who itachi could easily body.

I respectfully disagree, though not completely. Yes, when Sasuke left, there was a lot of mystery around what he was going to be like when Naruto finally finds him and how strong he would be, and yes, the stakes are much higher with Sasuke gone. However, if Naruto had successfully brought Sasuke back to the village, Sasuke would still be just as dedicated to his revenge as before and the curse mark would still be pushing Sasuke to leave again. Not to mention what Nick brought up at the end of the video about Sasuke having to deal with his evil power from the curse mark while still being in the village. Basically, everyone would now be watching Sasuke like a hawk to make sure he never leaves again. So, it's not like there are no stakes and drama if Sasuke stays in the village, the story would just changed a bit. Now, depending on if you like Sasuke's canon story arc or not, this would either be a good change or a bad change. Overall, I think that there are pros and cons for both sides. It just comes down to personal taste. Though I have to admit, even though I generally don't like canon Sasuke, I thought the end of the 1st Valley of the End fight was well done and a generally good plot twist.

About the Sasuke Retsuden ring point, I believe it was mentioned in the novel that rings are not a tradition from the Elemental Nations, and that it's just a common thing in Redaku (hence why Sakura never had a ring before). Still, it was a very cute moment, even if the anime took away a lot of Sakura's cool moments and Sasuke's internal dialogue.

Almost everyone seems to disregard the psychological aspect of Sasuke and treats him (a teenager struggling with intense trauma and doing it ALONE) as if he should "Get over himself and join the cast again" because his development took way longer than most. Granted, Kishimoto isn't the best character development writer, which is how he messed up Sakura so bad and created arguable one of the worst unrealistic ships in anime.

Congratulations on 500k. Remember, guys, Sasuke literally had his mind destroyed by Itachi when he was a child. Are we surprised he wasn't mentally able to make the right choices? Sasuke didn't just leave Konoha because Naruto was getting close to him in power. It had more to do with Itachi coming back and torturing him about being weak before putting him in a coma for two months. Before that, Sasuke accepted that Naruto was stronger after the Gaara fight, even asking how he could get that much power. And he didn't misinterpret Itachi's will. He just thought his brother was wrong, you know, about the whole murdering their family thing. He explains this more than once. Sometimes I wonder if people just don't want to understand Sasuke.

Sasuke is a person that wanted to do everything his own but not in a bad way. Also the whole reason he's armless is because in the end of Shippuden he keeps it as a reminder for all the shit that he's done, furthermore it's not like he needs both arms anyway, he can perform Jutsus with 1 hand and capable of dealing with Momoshiki and Kinshiki with it. Character Wise EMS sasuke..... How tf ?? Explain it to me. I'm cool with a LOT of things regarding Sasuke's character. The problem is the simple matter of execution. Here's a few ways I'd make his character arc a little better: -Have him become a Chunin after the exams and actively go against a direct order when he chases down Itatchi for the first time. Afterwards, have him be demoted which makes him spiral and believe that he won't get what he needs from the village, making him think his only option is to go to Orochimaru. -Have him be at the Tenshi Bridge confronting Team 7 and have him witness 4-Tail Naruto. This makes him realize that he could never match that amount of power, allowing us to witness him develop Kirin. -Don't make him a psychopath after fighting Itatchi. Instead, have his sole focus be on killing Danzo, and then afterwads have Danzo manipulate him further by making him believe the entire village is at fault. Making his next encounter with Team 7 be more tragic since now he doesn't know right from wrong anymore. -Make him an actual member of the Akatsuki during the war arc, allowing him and Naruto to be actual tragic enemies until Sasuke finds the Edo version of Itatchi and he has a 'come to Jesus' moment with him, bringing him on his journey to learn from the past Hokage.
