American breakfast isn’t really an everyday breakfast, at least not for anyone I know. It’s more about the culture and mythology surrounding it. In the US “breakfast food” is almost a synonym for comfort food. Parks And Recreation is an American TV show that does a great job of demonstrating the place that this meal holds in Americana. Lazy weekend mornings, late night diners, etc. When I lived abroad for a spell, I remember going to an American style diner one day and ordering the full American breakfast. The setting helped me understand that this breakfast food just feels like home, for me and millions of other Americans. And yes, it’s delicious, even if it doesn’t have vegetables (although the US has a history of counting fried potatoes as a serving of veggies)

I agree with comments saying this is more "American Diner" style breakfast. It's definitely not an every day breakfast for most people (more like once a week/month), but almost always available at any restaurant serving breakfast. But good on you for actually giving it a genuine second attempt! Thick cut bacon is definitely the way to go, hash browns looked great, and those pancakes are definitely a step up! It can still be improved a little bit, and in ways that can partially address some of your criticisms (but a lot of those criticisms will be hard to avoid completely. It's the USA. We aren't exactly known for balance) "hash browns" are divided into 2 styles, and the dominant style depends on where in the US you get them (but usually you can find both styles pretty much everywhere). The type you made are northern style. Southern style are cubed potatoes, and you can take a step up by making home fries. Home fries are southern style hash browns with things like onion and bell pepper mixed in while cooking, boosting flavor and nutritional content when made well. It's also not uncommon to customize your eggs with things like onion, mushrooms, tomato, and peppers (usually bell pepper or jalapeños, depending on spice tolerance). Finally, you can just as easily substitute orange juice with milk, coffee, or tea. It's really up to personal preference here, and idk why orange juice is considered the go to. On a different note, another very common breakfast that will probably better address your concerns is an omelet with hash browns (both styles are acceptable), sometimes bacon or sausage, and a small bowl of fruit on the side. Not sure this would really reach a 10/10, but I think it would be an improvement over pancakes.
@EmbraceWithin2 жыл бұрын
what is an every day breakfast for most people in america?
@16chaos612 жыл бұрын
@@EmbraceWithin there are a lot of options due to the mix of cultures and variety of restaurants that serve breakfast to go, so coming up with a single breakfast that is an every day breakfast for most people is hard. In my experience most of the people I know will have something like oatmeal, cereal (which is not always sugary, but admittedly almost always lackluster), yogurt, eggs, or toast with fruit. Smoothies, or breakfast sandwiches (which are often something like a toasted bagel or biscuit cut in half with an egg, some bacon, some vegetables like spinach/peppers/onions, sometimes cheese, and sometimes hot sauce) are also common. It often boils down to either easy to prepare (cereal, oatmeal, etc), easy to eat on the go (a sandwich), or both (smoothies). Right or wrong, most people I know don't treat breakfast as seriously as other meals (usually due to time constraints in the morning). Unfortunately, this pressure for a quick easy breakfast encouraged the rise of (often sugar filled) cereal or fast food, instead of more balanced home cooked meals. Regardless, that's why I don't think the standard "diner style" breakfast is representative of an every day breakfast in the USA, but more of a special occasion breakfast, or "brunch". It's neither easy to prepare, nor easy to eat on the go. I think pancakes with bacon is seen as an every day breakfast by people from other countries because it's the iconic "ideal" breakfast across the USA, and is served in nearly every restaurant that serves breakfast. All the TV/movie parents make pancakes and bacon for their kids before school, but that level of effort put into breakfast is not a common occurrence (at least among the people I know).

Kind of like the british breakfast, the all-American breakfast is rarely eaten in full, and certainly not on a daily basis. Typically your standard every morning American breakfast will be one, two, maybe even three elements of the big version of the meal. Its easy and relatively painless to fry up some bacon or sausage in a pan, fry up some eggs in the grease, and then have a buttered or jammed piece of toast with a cup of coffee. Its not nearly as grandiose or as indulgent as is typically depicted by modern culture, and the only people who really eat pancakes with breakfast regularly are big families with several kids to feed, because pancake batter can stretch out to feed a lot of mouths for cheap. Otherwise, the BIG American breakfast that everyone immediately thinks of when the think of the name "American Breakfast" (I.E. Short stack of buttered buttermilk pancakes dripping with syrup, bacon AND sausage, toast, eggs, hashbrowns) is eaten in its entirety pretty rarely, and almost always on a Sunday or weekend where you feel like indulging yourself to some good food and lazing around for a couple of hours on a morning you're not planning on doing anything.
@Soulstice13192 жыл бұрын
💯💯💯👏👏👏 nailed it. I love a full American/English (generally continental) breakfast on weekends, sometimes as dinner but definitely not on a daily basis! An entire spread is too excessive. But as I write this, I just realized that if you make a full brekkie with all the elements, just massively rduce the portion size, then you can literally have a sausage/bacon, egg, toast with butter/spread, a small pancake and coffee, without it being too heavy.

Thanks for giving the 'American Breakfast' a second chance. You made enough food for two, maybe three people. As many have said, this is the 'hospitality' breakfast, personally it is two different meals for me. I would fix myself the eggs (fried or scrambled), meat, potatoes (optional), bread (toast, English Muffins, or biscuit) for one meal and pancakes or pancakes + meat for another meal. Orange juice is optional (it talks back to me = indigestion) and can be substituted with apple or grape juice. My breakfast is 1 egg scrambled, 2 slices thin bacon or two American sausage links and a biscuit with jelly and sweeet tea is my beverage of choice. Leave Out the Sugar and Vanilla in your Pancake recipe! The sweetener for pancakes is the type of syrup (maple syrup, corn syrup, golden syrup, molasses, or honey) you pour on it. I mix all the liquids for my pancakes together before adding to the dry ingredients for the pancakes. Try buttermilk, sour milk, or yogurt & sour cream as substitutes for the sweet milk in your pancakes. For the hashbrowns, use the larger holes of the box grater and as you get to smaller pieces of the potato use the pad rather than the tips of your fingers to push the potatoes through the holes. Veggies & fruits - since you didn't serve any bread, i.e. biscuits, toast, English Muffins or croissants, you didn't serve any fruit jelly or jam. In the summer, I like to add a garden fresh tomato to my breakfast, especially if I am doing fried eggs. You left out the biscuits and sausage gravy, oatmeal (porridge), and grits (which I like with fried eggs and fresh tomato slices).

That breakfast is usually what I had after church as a child. Truthfully, we eat smaller, faster breakfast (if we eat breakfast at all). So we do country potatoes (has other veggies in with potatoes, like bell peppers, onions, garlic, salt and pepper). But we do parfait types too. Or non-dairy fruit smoothies. That's my preference for breakfast. My husband does a scrambled egg, onion, Roma tomato with day old rice seasoned with garlic powder. It's awesome for breakfast.

I’m an American too, despite the alias. I only occasionally eat breakfast, which is usually yogurt or something else that is grab-and-go. On the rare occasion I do cook a breakfast, it’s almost always eggs with toast, or flavored rice. Making “the traditional American breakfast” is so time consuming, my parents only make it once every-other month (with begging and preemptive planning lol). It’s a rare treat, definitely not healthy 😅

I mean, I think you have to remember that this breakfast was widely accepted due to the inexpensive surplus of calories it provided. Many Americans working on farms or doing some other type of physical labor would have no problem burning an extra 1000-1500 calories. Though the issue of it being packed with unhealthy ingredients makes you feel slow and sick at first, those extra calories are sometimes necessary. Though yeah, it’s definitely not meant to be eaten on a daily basis

My favorite thing about American food in general is how regional variation there is. Between north and south there's a split in what hot cereal people eat, with northerners eating oatmeal and southeners eating grits (boiled cornmeal, i think it's gross). Here in Wisconsin people will fold copious amounts of cheddar into scrambled eggs, the Southeast loves biscuits and gravy, the cities in the Northeast prefer breakfast sandwiches, and Southwest fare mixes American and Mexican cuisine. You rated Mexican breakfasts as one of the highest so I think you'd enjoy a Tex-Mex meal.

two things that are overlooked about the American breakfast are that one it's not an everyday meal it's not even an every-week meal its more of a semi-special occasion meal once in a while type thing. another thing is that it's a lot more customizable than most people think you can swap out a lot of the items like pancakes for oats, toast,waffle , french toast, or just nothing. you can have your eggs any way you like them you can have sausage or turkey bacon you can add fruits and use honey instead of syrup

I think the only thing this is really missing is fruit. A small handful of raspberries or blueberries, maybe a wedge of grapefruit. The orange juice is nice, but only a small glass. You would typically see a glass of milk with this as well. And there are definitely ways you can make this breakfast even more luxurious. And as others have said, this is not an everyday meal. This is for special occasions, weekends, or to impress guests. A normal breakfast is going to generally be scrambled eggs and toast or a bowl of cereal and cold milk. We Americans don't usually have vegetables with our breakfast. If we do, it is usually in an omelet and will have some combination of white/yellow onions, bell peppers, tomatoes, green onions/scallions, or mushrooms.

Some things of note that others would have told you: 1. This is not an every day thing, that's only perpetuated by tv shows where they show the character walk downstairs to the smell of freshly cooked breakfast. We eat it on special occasions or generally just weekends. 2. While not stereotypical, adding fruit and veggies is kind of fun. I personally like some fresh spinach in my scrambled eggs along with fresh shredded cheese because it adds color, texture, and some extra flavor. I also really like bananas and/or chocolate chips with my pancakes, but if you were to ask all Americans who like pancakes, what they like on them, you will find a good variety. Some like blueberries and strawberries and raspberries with their pancakes. My family even has a family secret to make ours taste better, but what I can say is it isn't just about maple syrup. Maple syrup is good, but buttermilk syrup is pretty good too. It's a lot of finding what you like. 3. That bacon is kind of horrendous. Thick is good, but that is super short and stubby. 4. The Orange Juice pick is a pretty bad choice for us when you go all out like this because it's naturally sugary here, even the freshly squeezed stuff can be pretty sugary imo. Milk or coffee would work better here.

Still though, it’s just his opinion and everyone is entitled to one especially with something as benign as food. I am fact feel sorry for anyone who feels so sensitive about their food choices that they don’t like hearing someone else be disgusted by it. I mean I empathize with you, I definitely have foods are near and dear to my heart but that doesn’t mean I’m gonna let myself get uncomfortable or severely offended because someone doesn’t like the same food as me. I mean I can’t wrap my head around the idea of someone being disgusted by Raw fish such as sashimi, nor can I fathom the idea of being utterly disgusted by canned sardines. My first exposure to both of these was absolute delight. I was told my whole life how disgusting canned sardines were, I decided to finally try it in my teens, and it was one of the most heavenly package food experiences I’ve ever had. Maybe it’s just that I only have certain foods that I have that’s close to my heart but I can understand how it can be a bit of offensive but I wouldn’t say to the point to ridicule a KZbinr for doing what his KZbin channel is about, giving his commentary and opinions on food. Also I find a different one someone just rants on and on about how disgusting particular food is, for example I’m still confused as to why this one particular woman felt the need to keep going on and on and on about how absolutely disgusting sardines were to her as she was making a design regarding canned sardines. Like it’s OK for you to not like it but why do you have to go on that long in your video talking about how disgusted you are by the taste and smell and everything. We get it, you don’t like it. You can mention it once or twice and that’s good enough to emphasize a point that you are horrendously disgusted by it. After that though, it just starts to feel annoying. By the way when I’m saying you I’m referring to the woman who kept detailing on how disgusting canned fish specifically sardines are as again, she is making a design regarding it. Again I have no problem with someone being disgusted by it and if someone makes a review video about food and that’s what the series is all about and they don’t like the same food as me, that’s fine. It’s a whole Nother thing when they just go ham on it, no pun intended by the way, but they just go all out in expressing their utter disgust of a food in a piece of Content that isn’t even about that. So all that being said I think he’s being pretty respectful By the way again don’t worry I totally respect your opinion of American breakfasts, I didn’t really have the traditional kind all that often in my household growing up, and I’ve completely or almost completely lost my taste in breakfast cereals .By the way again don’t worry I totally respect your opinion of American breakfasts, I didn’t really have the traditional kind all that often in my household growing up, and I’ve completely or almost completely lost my taste in breakfast cereals.Like I can stomach it if it’s what I have but I much prefer to cook myself up a meal of some sort and or make a smoothie or something. Seems like a lot of the ire you're getting is you're assuming this is typical everyday breakfast here in the States. I get that it's our famous breakfast spread, but people typically only eat like this on weekends (and even then there's regional variety, weekend breakfast in the South will likely be quite different). Actual everyday breakfast here in the States are usually things like: - Oatmeal, with fresh fruit and/or nuts, with or without cinnamon. - Omelets. Specifically American Omelets, usually stuffed with veg. For example one of my staple breakfasts is an omelet with tomato, mushrooms, and spinach cooked together and a sprinkle of cheese. Peppers, onions, and meats are also very common omelet stuffers. - Grits, which is so versatile you can go many directions with them. - Breakfast Burritos, which like omelets can be done any way you like from healthy to quite indulgent. (and are frequently prepped the night before for extra efficiency (we Americans are obsessed with efficiency)). - A grapefruit, commonly seen with other options in this list. Also, I commented on your original American breakfast video that a more Southern take is worth a try. Eggs however you like, sausage gravy and biscuits, a fresh tomato, and grits being very common for weekend breakfast here in the Appalachians.

My American breakfast looks like this. Two parts protein (One rich, plus savory or strongly flavored), to one part starch, one part fruit, and then your drinks a small hot drink and a cool one (usually coffee and a sweet tart juice). It's also important to remember that America has a wide varity of local varations on their average breakfast. Most of the time when I picture "American breakfast" I picture Diner breakfasts. Average American Breakfast includes bacon (rich savory meat), with small sausage links (porky and herby), and some kind of egg for extra because that's also in the American spirit of sharing wealth and richness. Then a few triangle slices of toast with a thin layer of butter and a tart sweet jelly. For a fruit it's whatevers in season or a local favorite; bananas, apples, oranges, or say half a grape fruit are a few varities that come of the top of my head. Then finally for drinks a cup of coffee and a small glass of juice, in early American Diners the juice was freshly squeezed. Thus the drink is fresh, varied, and sweet. It's still a very savory breakfast. But the fresh fruit, juice, and optionally the starch of choice are parried to contrast the savory parts of the dish. Some varients include changing the thickness of the bacon from extra thin and crispy, to thicker and more tender pieces. Or changing the eggs from scrambled to fried, or even boiled. You can switch the toast for potatoes. Use any local fruits. Have some drinks, and chat with a close friend or with family, but it's obviously rich, savor, and fresh and delicious by yourself. This is my American breakfats treaty as a dumb American. Thinking of the breakfast even state by state you at least have 50 varities technically, at least I'd argue it. But I love all kinds of breakfasts anyway. Great video btw!

Can you try Spain? From the top of my head, I can think about mainly 2 things that are common and universal for breakfast in Spain. First is a just olive oil toast combined with a variety of ingredients; jamón, salchichón, manchego cheese... And we also do a weird thing with olive oil toast where we smush the interior of a tomato and then spread It on top of the toast, It is called "pantumaka", specially popular in Catalonia. And then we have Spanish Churros, but not the star-shaped churros that are popular in the US because México, spanish churros are not very sweet, very sweet and full of Air bubbles so It ends Up hollow. It needs to be hollow so then when you dip It in Hot cocoa or Hot chocolate milk (here we call It Colacao) It absorbs the liquid, It is mad tasty. Also churros need to be fried in neutral oil, olive oil is way to overpowering. This is just from top of my head, you can find more stuff out there

as the top commented said, "american-style" breakfast, especially with ALL of those components is not an every day thing, also something i do to eggs if im wanting more veg is to add kechup or even salsa. there are also other styles for extra variety, it's not just that combo.

@ananon57712 жыл бұрын
@@differentideas8231 the style in the video is probably most common in diners, but for home, its far too much to do consistently even if you had all the ingredients, id take like an hour at least to prepare it all, so eating it every day is just not feasible (id also be really unhealthy, even by Americans standards) also many stuff changes alot regionally. like one really common breakfast in the south (though it has spread alot) is biscuts (not like the birish kind,which is cookie-like), sausage and white gravy, and that is the main dish, no need for most of that stuff,or my father would just roll up the eggs, hashbrowns, and some cheese (sometimes also sausage in or on the side), and have it like that as a casserole (he was from northern IL/ southern WI, though it seems to not have a precise origin), with salsa on top, which seems to be his addition. also a common one (especially in the northeast from what i can see) is having a breakfast sandwich (probably due to convenience) or as a kid i had alot of sugary cereal, yogurt or oatmeal (southerners have grits, which is similar) cause it was easy to make. the US can vary alot more than you think (the distance from seattle to NY is over 1000km longer than the distance from paris to moscow,so even with somewhat similar people, local culture will develop, especially once immigration is also put in the mix, which can make places like miami slathered with latin culture)

Yes, that's what your IMAGINATION tells you is what we have for breakfast. NOW you have actual, real Americans telling you what is the usual fare. What you've imagined are breakfasts you and the world, including Americans, too, have seen projected in movies. Different times, different eras, different regions, idealized to project a specific image for the narrative. The US is a huge country with approximately 32 millions of people living in it, even some from very diverse cultures of the world. And our different states and regions are just as diverse and do not march to one single drummer. So what may be typical in the South and Midwest, would be different from the North or Western states. We do have the eggs, pancakes, etc., but not as a daily fare. It would be a different fare, on a rare occasion when we actually have time for it, and there would be totally different menus to choose from other than that diner staple. Arizona, or California, would have different interests and influences than Appalachia or Alabama, etc.. Not better or worse, but just different and diverse. You can't lump millions of people into just one standard fare nowadays.

Do breakfast from the Southern US. Essentials: Grits (make sure it is nice and buttery) Biscuits - Can do a sausage gravy with it Hash browns or Diced fried potatoes Sausage Country Ham - Can do bacon too, but traditionally Ham was a staple in most Southern breakfasts. Scrambled eggs - Can be cooked with diced onions and peppers, or an omlette Also, what many southerners do, is they'll mix their grits with the eggs they eat, or with cheese. You can even mix in some of the sausage, ham, and/or bacon. Keep in mind, these aren't everyday breakfasts. Mostly special occasions or Sunday meals when it's okay to be lethargic afterwards!

What you're eating there is called a farmer's or lumberjack breakfast, although you're missing coffee with clotted cream. It's high in calories, fat, carbs, and protein. It's meant to be eaten at 5am, so that you can be working - heavy physical labor - by 6am. From there, you work until 12pm, have a heavy lunch, and then work until 6pm or dark (whichever comes first). You usually have a lighter dinner and then fall asleep at 8-9pm to start all over again the next day. It's not unusual to burn 10-15k calories per day in that kind of job. The breakfast is high in sugar to get you going fast, high in carbs and proteins to last you for 6 hours of heavy labor. Vegetables and fruit aren't needed - too much bulk for too little calories. If you're not in that kind of job, it's insane to eat this breakfast more than a couple of times a year.

I LOVE ❤ your channel!! I think the ‘image/reputation’ of the American breakfast stems from 1950 TV (showing prosperity after the war) and continued to be promoted through media 🗞 rather than reality. I think an Americans ‘everyday meal’ is going to be VASTLY impacted on which ‘diet modality’ they follow. As you probably now know, Americans rarely eat this way. Its something maybe eaten on holidays and usually the pancakes would be toast and if pancakes, (1-2 at most!) eaten as a separate meal by the kids at the table. Americans also use ‘streaky’ bacon not thick pork belly (I LOVE your pork belly in this). My special occasion meal are Eggs Benedict 🍳with sausage and for everyday either just coffee or 3 eggs, just protein & fat. 🙏 Thanks for all you do, its fantastic!

That full oversized American breakfast is very much a "once or twice a year" thing for me...it's delicious, but if you don't want to be waking up with horrible heartburn, it will basically be the only meal you eat the whole day. My personally most common "big" breakfast consists of an egg, some kind of meat patty (I make my own sausage...usually Sweet Italian made with pork loin at about 10% fat) some veggies that I chop and fry off in any residual oil and brown bits from the meat and egg (most commonly the veggies will be onions and either peppers of some kind of leftover veggie from the previous night's dinner which will usually be either broccoli or green beans), and some kind of fresh fruit...often banana, strawberries, an orange, or a pear. My actual general most common breakfasts are either leftovers (luck of the draw) or frozen shrimp that I fry and add to grits (usually Cajun seasoned) or a bit of rice (usually just some soy, garlic, and ginger).

As an American we weren't necessarily upset with the rating, more so just the approach. In fact I think a "Classic American Diner Breakfast" is more like a 4/10 It's good but it's not necessarily like you said, a Balanced breakfast. it was simply the fact that the American breakfast got such a low rating compared to the other breakfasts. France for example was just jam on toast, and while only getting a 4/10, it was still approached with the love and care that an Icon of culture such as breakfast deserves. Regardless, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. you gave the American breakfast your all and gave it a great shot honestly better than some Diners I've seen and It means a lot to see that kind of thing :)
