I find that the Iridium's "jack of all trades, master of none" approach is actually kind of a strength in and of itself -- it encourages you to pick entirely different synthesis engines for each oscillator and mash them together into something totally unique, which is always a pleasant surprise. Being able to combine totally different things into one is what I love most about my Iridium.

Not to speak for him, but I believe he was referring to the various synth engines - all of which are very good but none of which are top of class on their own - rather than suggesting that it wasn’t extremely good at a certain style. It’s a “the results are greater than the sum of its parts” kind of machine.

I feel exactly the same way about the Elektron Analog Keys. As an analog synth, without effects, the sounds are kind of "meh", when compared to another analog synths it lacks weight. But when used along other gear it always fits in the mix without overpowering anything. It is also a great controller for other gear, makes for an amazing analog drum machine, sequencer and CV sequencer! ... it also acts as an interface when connected through USB and as a FilterBank with its two inputs. It is the only modern hardware synth that I've kept. The Iridium of course is on a whole other level, nonetheless, I get exactly what you mean with ""jack of all trades, master of none" approach is actually kind of a strength in and of itself"

I had the same experience with the Hydrasynth. It was so much fun exploring new sounds and playing with it. But when moving I thought that I'd maybe be better to sell it, because it safes space and I already have Massive, Massive X and all kinds of other softsynth to replace it. So I sold it and had some extra bucks for the move, which was nice to have of course... but since I sold it I am almost every month at the point to buy it again, because I cant get the same feeling, sitting in front of a PC with a Mouse. I was more creative with the hydra than I was with more powerful software programs.

I love this video. I know how you feel. I had a desktop version of the Hydrasynth. I loved it. I didn't really like the pads but the sound engine, beautiful. but I had several emergencies happen all at once and I had to sell it again just when I was really starting to understand it. I missed it. a lot. I tried a couple smaller and cheaper pieces to replace it and they were bad. Well , a couple weeks ago I got to the point where I could get another one. On top of that the Explorer had come out at a lower price point, so it has a smaller footprint which I prefer, and a keyboard instead of the pads which I hadn't liked. I am so happy to have it back! the last couple weeks it has been so inspiring. So I do feel your pain, and your joy.

is the experience of the explorer similar to the desktop? i had the desktop as well and sold it. regret this so much. I was a bit hesitate to get the explorer because of the less buttons, that I cant get the same tactile feel of the desktop version. How did you feel the transition overall?

1. This was funny how is was put together. 2. I was on the fence about getting this when it 1st came out and then your video made me want to actually buy it but I didn't because i wanted to hold out for something. Got the mpc keyboard which at the time of the iridium release was only a spec sheet floating around 3. You returning yours didn't help me decide on whether I should still get one or not. 4. This video made me feel like I Knew I should have gotten one. Congrats on getting it back. I cant see me getting anymore sampler/synths at this point. I've reached my gear goal 5. I did the same thing as far as getting rid of 1 particular gear (twice) and getting it back. Which was the Ensoniq ASR-10 Keyboard. Primitive compared to today's gear including the Iridium, but I will not get rid of it again as I always somehow go back to it for the sound it produces.

It's been a while, but can I ask you how satisfied you are with the MPC keyboard? I have the iridium on my wish list, but I'm also looking for a manageable centrepiece for my hardware setup - and that's where the MPC keyboard comes into play for me too. I would therefore be very interested in your opinion and experience.

I just got an open box/new keyboard version, for under 3k before taxes. I've been wanting an Iridium since I first seen one, and planned to get the module, but luckily I found a good deal for the keys version. I have a Hydrasynth 49, so I probably could have used it as a controller, but I obviously preferred the keys version. I also ordered a Squarp Hapax, and I'm looking forward to hear what a Hapax, Iridium and Hydrasynth sounds like sequenced together. I'm looking to upgrade my gear, but due to the prices for premium gear, I'm super indecisive. It's crazy how fast things add up. I'm thinking about selling some things. I have an Opsix, which I feel like could be obsolete in my setup, due to having the Hydrasynth and Iridium now. The Opsix is still simple, and sounds great for a lower costing synth. I got it for a great price new, so I may just keep it.. I'm currently on the fence on what I should focus on next. I hate my current layout. I have multiple desks, and one synth stand, and it's cluttered. I'm trying to figure out if I want a Jaspers or BlackPanther Systems setup, or if I should get a large desk, or both... The unfortunate part for me, is I would rather spend the money on gear, but having gear, when it's cluttered, takes away my inspiration. I wish there were some stand makers like Jaspers in the U.S.. It's crazy that the U.S. has such a limited stand market. I'm not trying to give customs 10%.. I've only ordered from overseas a few times, and luckily things like the Deluge don't have customs charges. I don't really know how customs charges work, from one country to another. From what I understand, is they don't charge if it's under a certain dollar amount, but I'm not sure if I fully understand. Sorry for steering off topic, I'm just trying to streamline my gear, and I'm looking for help/opinions on what stands and desks are best for a hardware synth/sampler/etc.. setup. Without having to spend $2k usd. I would like to spend $1.5k max for the entire setup, which would preferably include a new quality/comfortable desk chair.

Sometimes an instrument just does that to you. I have had and still have some instruments of that nature. My Microwave 1 and Q Rack are a couple that fit that bill, along with my Evolver and Mopho. Some of my modules, like Reflex LiveLoop and Graphic VCO are growing to be that way as well. It happens, and it is a blessing when it does. Most instruments don't do that for me. For now, the ones that do, tend to be a little menu dive'y, but that's ok, because in a lot of cases, that's where the seeds of magic can often be found. I say "seeds" because ultimately, they have to be nurtured and cultivated to allow their distinct personalities to emerge. Glad you found that in the Iridium.

One thing I learned a while ago was when I get the urge to sell something; put it on a shelf for a month and pretend it's already gone. Inevitably, if it's something I'm destined to keep, after a few weeks I find myself longing for it and will start a renewed relationship. That timeframe may be different for you, depending on how active you are, but generally the concept seems to work for friends I've mentioned it to.

I had the same experience between the Opsix & Modwave. Thats why the Opsix is in the studio, and the Modwave is not. The Modwave sounds great, but IMO the Opsix UI is superior. And dare I say the best hardware UI of any FM synth ever. You're making me want to try the Iridium though.

I saw loopop's video , but you can confirm that abput modwave i notice that it is so menu diving right ? to do any parameters tweaks , or to acces to certain controls ? . In opsix review video i saw also a thing so close , but i think that is more intuitive way to deal with. Haven't got any one of them , i'm so interested in purchase the opsix . I already have elektron digitone , i never before worked so deep with fm sintesis ( well when i was coursing a grade in sound technician we usually take sometimes ni fm7 but that's another historie ) but now i understand more things about sintesis than before. For me digitone it"s so extreme restricted in fm modulation and operation in general if you want to program complex things , Its fun sometimes but maybe its not a synth for me.

Supercool video! :-) I had high expectations before I bought the Iridium (keyboard version) and I got some 3rd party libraries to hear what this beast was capable of. I thought that he Iridium was good, but I didn't have the same positive experience as I did with for example the Korg Wavestate (definitely recommended for ambient stuff). So in a way, I was a little disappointed. I have many software synths that I was using instead of the Iridium in my music. BUT: when I started to make my own patches with the Iridium this beast became my new best friend! Making patches with the Iridium is pure joy and very inspiring. Both deep, complex and easy. My impression of the Iridium is so much better now and I will use it a lot in the future. Looking forward to see all your forthcoming Iridium videos and patches! :-)

You know the old saying about not fully appreciating something/one until it's gone, well that's the root behind GRAS. Clearly that's your experience with the Waldorf Iridium. Your passionate reunion gave me a moment of GAS (I'm easily influenced) until I discovered the price of the Iridium. I have the Waldorf Streichfett but that's more of a glorified strings pedal than a full-on synth module. I was put off Waldorf when considering the Blofeld. It has too many technical issues (apparently), which made me lose faith in the Waldorf brand. I'm glad the Iridium in back in your life, given how inspiring you find it. Oh, and I'm thoroughly enjoying your videos! Just commenting for the sake of the algorithm, and practicing my 'waffling old man' skills. They're coming along nicely, as you can see! 😁

Now that was a most enjoyable video! i'll try to respect your feelings in this matter but also suggest you go on as a happy person from this point. You learned a valuable lesson. We sometimes do make decisions too fast, realizing the consequences too late. And as long as it doesn't concern something living or irreplaceable, your fellow humans should understand that and not shoe you (i.e. throw footwear at you to leave the stage). Since you ask, here comes my confession: Many years ago i gave away my EMS Synthi A, my Roland Jupiter 8 and my Korg Sigma, on the same day, to the same person. Drove about 100 kilometers single distance to do that. Financially speaking a very bad decision. That person gave me a PPG 2.3 and the PKF (88 keys PPG modified steinway keyboard) in return. Financially still a rather unbalanced exchange. Why did i do that? Because i had lots, too many, other synths and did not use these 3 very much anymore. Was it a success? Yes, for a short moment at the guys home, where the PPG proved working i was happy as a child on Christmas. After driving the 100 kilometers back home, it didn't work anymore. Now that, in short, is the issue with collecting vintage originals. Given my background i should have been able to repair it easily but diminished eye and hand functions prevented me from doing that. Aftermath? My final regrets are only about the EMS Synthi A, since i loved that and was very proud of it. Given today's availability of amazing synths there is really no need for the Synthi A anymore. So i only regret the 14.000 Euros it was worth at that time, which otherwise would have been available for my family. i learned a lesson: Appreciate what you have, and what links to your heart. No need to replace that or acquire more. Is there a synth that i will never ever part with? Yes, my Roland D50 / PG1000 combination. It's cool, it's in my heart, soul, and muscle memory.

I got an Iridium myself just a couple months back and instantly fell in love with both the sound and the workflow, but not everything is for everyone, and I can see how the Iridium could be unpleasant to use for some people. It is kind of menu-driven as there's a *lot* of screens, but I wouldn't say it is menu-divey like some synths as most menus are only 1 or at most 2 steps from reach. But if you're not a fan of any kind of menu then yeah the Iridium is going to not be fun.

When you say that the synths you purchased in place of the Iridium sort of masters the synth type that they’re unique to, what do you mean exactly? Are you saying that from a sound design/ quality perspective or specifically the workflow/ knob per function aspect?

Just bought a keyboard version a week ago... been playing keys almost 40 years now, owned Oberheims, Minimoogs, ARPs, Prophets and this is vying for my favourite off all time... seriously... it's so addictive and easy to use for anyone that's been in the game a while... hate 99% of the presets and all the sample fodder included.. but import some wavetables and add subtle modulations, panning, filtering and fx and it's like crack for my brain... so many sound engines.. I would not feel as inspired sitting at Pigments...

i ended up feeling this way about my old MPC 1000. got caught up in the "its sound is so flat/boring/insert-adjective-here" rabbit hole and ditched it for a couple older drum machines. i hopped from almost every single MPC save for the 3000 and the 60 before i realized that it's what i made my favorite and most successful music on. bought another one to rebuild from the ground up alongside an Ensoniq EPS16+ and a 404MKII to keep as my main production hub and i couldn't be happier than my GAS is sated lol

Sold a lot of stuff to get the Iridium and the M. It was the best decision I ever made. The Iridium is one of the most powerful Synths on earth and the sound of the M ist absolute fantastic and outstanding. The sound quality of both machines is first class and hard to beat.

not so much a synth rather a controller the kordbot; despite its built quality being a major turn off sold it just to rebuy it some months later 😅 with synths the Lyra 8 and yamaha reface dx “with Dtronics controller” are the ones i had that instant connection with :)

I recently,sold my Iridium, I hope I won’t regret it! I disagree that it’s a master of none: the granular synth and the comb filter are truly excellent and it it in a class of its own (not to mention the UI which you won’t hear on a track).
@JamesonNathanJones
@JamesonNathanJones Жыл бұрын
Master of none might have been a little harsh, but I would still probably reach for other things if I were looking for any of the individual synth engines on their own (apart from the wavetable engine). The granular engine has relatively low grain count/resolution compared to something like the GR-1, but it’s definitely amazing that it’s all packed into one package. That digital former is absolutely gold 👍 It’s really an inspiring synth for sure.

Going through the manual of the Desktop Iridium and it seems to have Poly aftertouch. You need to play with the Mod Matrix. I have not tried using it yet But I will experiment with this.

Maybe you were not mistaking. Honestly? I Bought it and returned it to the shop after 1 week!. Plethora of possibilities, but the sound lacks dynamics, grit, bite, nastiness. Ok for cinematics but that's about it. Furthermore, no digital I/O and no audio over USB ?? And more people who sell their Iridium have the similar complaints about rather average sound... I think for 2.5K, there a more 'real' synths out there. And I didn't even mention bugs and screens falling off... Just put Omnisphere on and BANG, DYNAMICS !
