you can also do it with keyboard which I have been doing. You just need to press the arrow key immediately after selecting the upgrade. Just try to press space and the arrow key at the same time, but delay the arrow key press by the smallest time you possibly can. It's extremely inconvenient and you won't get it every time, but it works. Didn't know you can do click and drag, will try that next time.

I did it with bone as starting weapon like instead of runetracer. All you needed to do was to stand all the way up, but right above the table instead of to the left of it. I did take some damage, but I never got under half hp. This is also good since bone is better at killing the reaper then runetracer. But when you do your upgrades then you can still get runetracer. And since bone is more rare I would prefer starting with bone.

@@NeverNathaniel Yeah I just randomly got a bone as starting weapon, and instead of restarting I tested a bit for fun. I found that you can't do it with the positioning left from the table since the bone hitbox is a bit different and allow enemies to kill you. But right above the table the combo of santa water and bone seems to be pretty reliable, only tried it once but it worked fine that time

UPDATE: Managed on my 5th try. I will leave my initial frustration message down below for people interested and explain a VERY IMPORTANT factor that I found out. Maybe Nathaniel can also explain or do a video. The VERY IMPORTANT THING is to actually hit the Reaper with ALL that you got. While everybody talks about YOUR positioning, nobody talks about the Reapers positioning. I used to think damage numbers were ok, before I got him in the correct position and then the numbers turned red and bigger. That's the real DPS! If you're not doing those numbers, try repositioning. Don't be afraid (that's what I did. I froze because I was afraid to move) - you can move with only 1 reaper on the screen, Laurel + freeze will keep you safe. On my 5th try, the reaper got stuck below the table and I was peppering him with knives doing damage, but not RED damage, so I circled him once, went farther away, got some extra chests, maybe thinking that he will follow, get frozen and come back. He didn't, however when I went above the position mentioned in the video, he came closer, glitched a bit through the tables, then I resumed my position and the damage went RED. Pointing the knives down, different position than the video, but still managed to down him without the 2nd reaper even getting close. Original Comment: I really don't get it. I can't do it. Followed everything to the letter. First time I definitely failed because I got over eager and the Reaper didn't spawn, so I collected a bunch of levels before I saw him. Second, Third and Forth time I made SURE that he was on the screen before I started going for gems. Maybe I was lvl 3 one time, but still didn't manage to DPS him in time. I see my damage numbers, I stand in the correct spot and see Runetracer bouncing in his face, Had all the items mentioned here, death gets stuck on the chair and remains frozen all the time (the position he stands in is where the Big Runetracer from picture 1 is under the clock. I'm on the right, peppering him with knives, wand and Runetracer bouncing). 4 minutes pass and 3 extra reapers show up and still, this first one is NOT DEAD YET! (and they stand above me, not ruining the line of sight with the 1st one) Then I eventually die, of course. Any tips or is my experience a part of RNG?

Good stuff, both this update and the original guide. The wiki is nice, but it's always good to have a visual presentation. Got his ass on 1st attempt, same build as this vid, except for attract orb instead of duplicator, which led to la borra obviously. Took a bit longer, and the 3rd reaper ended up pushing the 2nd one out of position, which led to that one pushing the 1st one out of position. They went back and forth a couple times, but it ended up working out in the end.

Huge thanks for these detailed guides. I tried to figure it out myself for quite a while and got the main build right, still it was beyond me how you could do enough damage. But the posinitioning to avoid leveling up and get a level 2 Death to spawn was key. It worked on my first proper try(not getting a rune tracer doesn't count ^^). Even though some exp was dropped too close, so I was level 3 by the end of the run and the red gem was left out of screen it worked. But the difference between level 2 and 3 Death is already noticable. 3rd Death was quite a while up when the 1st finally fell. Could also be due to having cross instead of wand and not having the evolved knife. But still it worked out wonderfully smooth and just shows how much room there is for a little bad luck.

You can still move without the controller. You have to start pressing your movement keys a moment after you click your level-up option.

Just a little extra, the following were all possible and none really worked better than the other. It purely relies on how the Reaper moves. -Empty Tome alone -Spellbinder alone -Empty Tome + Spellbinder -Garlic + Empty Tome -Garlic + Spellbinder The only benefit in knowing these is that you can flex pick depending on what you get offered.

I thought about mixing in garlic for the longer freeze. With the recommended strategy, I did it three times in a row. Second time was pretty close, because the second reaper somehow got knocked loose, but the first one came back and knocked it away, and I just barely killed it. Both other times basically looked like the one I did on stream. PS, would love to do a joint stream / video sometime. I do it all the time with Monster Train but haven’t found a good group yet with Vampire Survivors.

I got Reaper after 8 or so actual tries and over 20 resets. It took me over the course of 4ish days taking breaks to gather my thoughts and practice positioning and angles. My Loadout: Runetracer and Santa Water(duh), Thousand Knives, Lancet, Laurel, and Cross Tome, Candelabrador, Bracer, Spellbinder, Duplicator, and vitally Tiragisu. I had killed the reaper just as I died and nearly cried thinking it didn't count, it was literally a photo finish. It all came down to luck with the positioning of the reapers.

I've been trying this for a few days now and for some reason the reaper refuses to show up at 30:00 instead it comes at 30:40 and then a second one at 31:00. They keep pushing each other around and I still haven't managed to kill it. What might be the reason for the first reapers late arrival?

I think something with the most recent patch made it more likely for reapers to get stuck on the bookcases on spawn. Try doing what I did and slowly make your way down (hopefully only getting one or two levels) and see if he manages to reset his location.

So the item setup worked for me. I took tiragisu for safety but didn't die even once. The only thing I would correct is the initial position. I set my character so it touches the bottom of the clock and it worked perfectly fine. All other positions from all videos made me dead about 24min...

So I've been following this to the letter and still can't get a kill I've done 8 runs. Managed to do it without a controller, and got lucky enough to not need to move much at all before I got hold of the clockwork lancet, if standing correctly the reaper can't slip behind you at all, he typically spawns high enough that he just hooks outside the reading nook, but additional reapers will knock him into the nook so you can't avoid moving from there. I didn't get the holy wand upgrade either, only the thousand edge, but runetracer is what slaps everything in to kibbles, especially since I got the optimal setup on attempt #2

Fire wand because it targets a random enemy and may break out the additional Reapers. Axe not so sure, but I guess because you get the candle, the aoe of the upgrade may result in the same problem.

prolly had tried over if not close to 2 dozen post 30 min attempts i have gotten the the best setup countless times and regardless if i have the extra revives have not been able to kill went as far as 33 mins with most damage taken by the first still haven't killed it. I just killed the reaper with the PENTAGRAM!!! I can’t believe it actually worked! I tried and failed the strategy multiple times, but the instant I tried using the pentagram, it actually worked! You gotta try it yourself! Basically, every time you upgrade the pentagram, it activates, so once you get the red gem, you can spam the pentagram, dealing 6666 damage each activation, so you basically eliminate half the reaper’s health in an instant!

I'm playing v0.5.0e - EA, followed every step and worked perfectly, my issue is that the reaper never died, even after being spawned before I started leveling at all. Seems to have more hp couse was 4 minits of continues damage untill the 3rd reaper killed me -.- any help?

I tried this, got the perfect setup, and Death just wouldn't die. He was in exactly the same position as in this video, but after 4 minutes of constant damage the first one still wasn't dead. He killed me and used up my revive before I ever levelled past 2, so maybe that did something. Giving up on this, because it honestly seems like such a ridiculous waste of time. Sit there not able to use your computer for 30 minutes because the game won't run in the background only to have it fail for seemingly no reason.

I feel you man. I think I put at least 15 hours in attempts before I got it the first time (back when we thought bone was mandatory). Since then, I've done it another 4 times with ~50% success rate. Still kinda meh, considering I have the benefit of all the other attempts helping me get muscle memory for how to position accurately.

You can use stuff like Autohotkey to toggle "Window always on top" for the Vampire Survivors window and drag it way smaller. This way it keeps running while doing something else.

Some of it is RNG, but, critically, chests tend to drop in the front, so standing a bit back can really help.

I would recommend waiting until you see the reaper. As you see in my video, I was very careful not to get too many xp gems until after I saw the reaper (even at the expense of losing my extra life).

Every enemy scales their hp based on your character level. With the reaper, it's just the most noticable.

Driving me crazy...., got the reaper in the same spot, doing (by the looks of it) same damage (mostly red), same items... Goes on for 2 minutes, more reaper spawn and get stuck on shelves, so its just me and reaper 1 in the "ring"... By min 34, reaper 2 et 3 join in on the fun (get unstuck) and that c*cks*cker is still not dead - by 34:50 im dead.... Have done over a dozen tries by now, mastered the initial positionning, but the darned bastard just ain't dying.... Edit: Shit man, finally got the sh*tter, and on a 'trash' attempt as well (had to take the whip as last weapon). I think what was happening was that I got 1 bug run (the one I described above) and other than that I stood too high so not all rune-missile were hitting the reaper (only the top ones). Took probably over 20 runs but Thanks for the guide mate!! Gonna go milk the living F out of red death now :)

so I was just trying to get my first death kill following this (and your previous guide). RNG gave me good until all I had left was to get Tome, and one free weapon slot. Thought the run was over when it rolled me Thunder Ring and Pummrola. Surprisingly, evolved Thunder Loop clinch the kill, getting the highest crits. So maybe its not one to avoid? That or I just got REALLY lucky

The problem with thunder/fire isn't the damage, reaper hones on hits so if it's stuck from spazing around the screen, lightning/fire can unstick it.

Makes sure that the reaper is getting pinged by the Runetracer. The smaller runetracer will stay quite low in the space, and it's easy for the reaper to get stuck just outside the damage area.

I am sorry, I am new to final boss killing and I have a very basic question, if I may. What is the reason behind doing the 30-minute run using the aoe-runetracer combo trick and not playing the run the normal way? Is it just to save some effort, or is there an actual boss-killing benefit in doing it this way? Because you can finish the 30 minutes and spawn the boss the normal way even with a build including all the skills needed for the boss kill. Thanks a lot.

It’s explained in full in the full guide video, but the main reason is that all enemies HP scales with character level. Staying at level 2 means that reaper has an amount of health that is actually killable.

I do not understand what I'm doing wrong. I follow this guide to the letter, including positioning, and run into either not enough damage output to kill the reaper; or a reaper that NEVER spawns on screen before I am forced to move to get him to appear, and I wind up leveling before I see him, making him unkillable. ORRRR, a reaper that just. Does. Not. Die. Despite over two minutes of firepower being pumped into it with an on-screen spawn at level 2. What is my missing component?! Upgrade order? It sounds like that doesn't matter anymore! Pixel-perfect positioning? Then why does it seem like other people have been able to kill the reaper with slight errors on that? Weapon choice / upgrading the weapons? In post-game screen it looks like neither 1k edge or Holy wand can scrape past 100-150k. What in the fuck is the X-factor on this?

I tried it 2 times so far so my sample size is quite small but I encountered the same problem. I waited a bit when hitting 30 sec to be sure first reaper spawned before running for the red gem. Once he spawned I grab gems, updates, then chests and run to the explained position. First reaper gets tons of damage but just refuses to die. I even took Tiragisu just to be safe but once 4 reapers were on me I died with not even the first reaper killed. Something seems off here, dunno, maybe it was just bad luck or something. Have to try more but it felt like I did everything right and still failed and "wasting" another 30 mins just to see if it works is veeeery annyoing.

After leveling up and moving to the second position, the first reaper always gets stuck at the table and without the full runetracer damage I'm not able to defeat the reaper before I get killed by 3rd/4th reaper. Is there a way to avoid this and guide the reaper "safely" behind the table/stool?

@@ToastedSynapseGaming It can be anywhere at the big table, i.e. in the gap between the table and the right stool.

@@Greizeeing I had a couple of runs, all ruined precisely because the reaper got stuck in places where only white damage numbers would appear (so not max DPS). In the run that was successful, he did indeed get stuck between the table and the right stool, just under that gap. I tried doing a circle around him, going off and collecting some chests and eventually returning to the spot in the video, however I moved Upwards, to the edge of the map, then he glitched just a few pixels North, closer to me. That's when I resumed the position in the video and saw that all damage numbers were now RED (indicating max DPS). And it worked. With him stuck between the table and the right stool and with me pointing the knife attacks downwards, as opposed to the video where he was above the player. I hope this helps. All you need to remember is that you don't have to be afraid, he will be frozen for a long time and you do have Laureal, so you can move around a bit as long as the 2nd reaper isn't there. Don't be afraid, move around, try and see when he changes position, have revives in case he jumps and hopefully he will get into the correct position. HIS position is MUCH MORE important than YOURS. And videos seem to disregard this.

Me too, the reaper also seems to sometimes gets stuck off screen and you have to move down and collect xp, leveling up a few times to unstick him which fucks your run after sinking half an hour into it...

yours died at 31:30 and here mine only died at 32:35 after reviving like 5 times

dunno what i do wrong... reaper just dont want to die... to the point that the second reaper and the first are both on me... and both take damage until the fourth comes and kills me
