BG3 sweep incoming. Some games do certain things better than BG3 but BG3 does everything so damn well. Definitely the biggest contender for GOTY because of the above fact. Here are some thoughts on the categories below: Best Narrative: Alan Wake is a contender here. Best multiplayer: BG3 does online coop across platforms and splitscreen couch coop. Best Sound track: The game turns into a musical a certain points. An completely optional boss has his own Disney villian song that the VA personally sings. Hi Fi Rush is the only other contender here. Best Community: Larian shaped the game with community feedback over the past 3 years of early access and continue to make patches and hotfixes. When there latest patch impacted sex speedrunners (yes, thats a thing), Larian added a workaround for that niche community in a few days. Best Performance: Articles in mainstream newspapers are being written about Astarion and his character arc. When the Golden Joy Sticks Awards nominated 2 BG3 voice actors for performance of the year (which would definitely potentially split the BG3 vote), Astarion's VA ended up getting over 70% of the vote anyways.

Zelda's a great game and all (tho personally not my kind of game), but I sure hope it won't be the case like GoW: Ragnarok last year where it just seemingly gobbled up almost every category for itself even if there were better nominees in the categories. It does kinda make these events a little less exciting to me where there's an obvious "nobrainer" because it's the most popular one. Give everyone else a chance, y'know?

See here's the thing is even tho Baldur's Gate 3 and TOTK got lots of noms, I don't think they win many of those when put against the competition for specifically the category they are in. Performance, Score, and Multiplayer are 3 categories I vastly doubt either of those 2 getting the win over others in that space BUT only time will tell.

Putting Destiny 2 up for best community support made me audibly laugh out loud when I first saw this. Also, I agree whole heartedly that Halo Infinite should have been nominated, the new team at 343 has done an incredible turning that game around when we thought there was no hope left.

I'm admittedly a little sad Remnant 2 didn't get more love, but best action game is at least a very well deserved nomination. The first was fantastic and the 2nd is even better. VERY glad to see Hi-Fi Rush getting so much love. Got in the group of the 2nd or 3rd most nominations (can't remember which). That said, BG3 sweep would not be unwarranted this year. That game absolutely KILLED it and sparked so much conversation and made people who don't even LIKE turn-based games enjoy the game.

People were talking about how a racing game cannot be game of the year. Ah yes, this I agree with. The genre of the game should not dictate what can be nominated for GOTY or other categories. This debate was 2 years ago along with a year Flight Sim got 10/10's left and right the year before, but maybe those games just weren't on submitters minds enough because of their specific genres.

I'd say there's a difference between taste and bias. Bias means feeling emotionally obligated to sway one way. Taste is having preference in something. They co mingle a lot, but yes someone's tastes can impact what that individual favors or believes is best. I recently listened to Kinda Funny react to the noms where they explained how they submitted for this where they all collectively submitted their 5 for the category to their boss (Greg) and which ever 5 had the most votes is the ones they'd submit for their nominees for this. I'd imagine every media outlet has a similar method. At the end of the day this is all done by people and their opinions rather than an agenda to fulfill....but if one wants to disagree or try to sway it to some other way of saying this then all good, but I got nothing further to add than some like chicken more than beef.

@SamuraiKibiji Advance Wars is great and fun, Fire Emblem Engage had a weak story but exciting gameplay, Cities Skylines 2 is expansive but it had a lot of bugs on release. I never experienced Company of Heroes 3, but my friend who is a fan was not very enthusiastic about it. Pikmin 4 gets my vote!

Even the towns, maps day and night transitions like I would say one of the best music transition, if not the best. So I would say it is a strong candidate, could be even better than ff16 and I did play both.

It was in Early Access the past couple years while the devs were building it, never completely released or completed till this year where it officially launched as a full title. Maybe they should make a new category like "Best Early Tests" or something like Infinite's Flights, The Finals Beta, and Grounded's Early Access...

@lurkingposter As much as I enjoyed Yuri's perfomance as Spider-Man, I gave my vote to Idris Alba. He was incredible and if I could I would have voted for Minji Chang because I thought she did even better. Everyone in Cyberpunk are such talented voice actors, they make the characters and world feel so much more real/alive. Especially V, the character you play as, personally I love female V more too.

@lurkingposter To be honest though, I was being bias through my voting and gave it to Cyberpunk in every category just because I think the game deserves all the credit.. especially since it can't get as much for its base game since it's failure at launch.. unfortunately.. But the sound fxs, music, designs throughout its world, especially when it comes to Black Wall, character models, story, the emotions its able to make you feel, the emotions everyone is able to portray, especially Song Bird.. Phantom Liberty is just an incredible addition to the base Cyberpunk 2077.

See the Take2 thing, those are more "remasters" than remakes which are still great to do now and then. This year we got 2 greats of those in Metroid Prime and Quake 2. But Take2 were ok with Rockstar publishing them lazy remasters.

For me the only "lock" for Baldur's Gate 3 is RPG. Everything else it has something that might have done that particular thing better. For instance Performance? Yeah the others there are very comparable. Narrative? Alan Wake 2 is a strong contender there.

Based on Metacritic score,it would make relatively low amount of sense if Starfield was nominated. Especially User Score taken into account. User Score is 7.0 . PS crowd review bombing it? Possibly. Possibly not. Nearly all Game of The Year category games have well above 8 User Score and one above 9. Despite the very LOUD minority bashing Spiderman 2, the fact is it has highest User Score. Not by very much, but it does. It is likely to best Baldurs Gate 3 by User Vote,but maybe not. Jury vote,Spiderman 2 doesn't stand a chance. Edit: Mario Wonder has higher User Score than Spidy,however something like 5000 reviews less,sooooo.....🤔 .

I was pretty satisfied with the Nominees, although I think that Starfield was heavily snubbed (it could have easily fit in the Score, Audio, Action Adventure, and Direction categories but was not it any). It was really cool to see games like HiFi rush and Phantom Liberty get the attention they deserve, which is great looking forward. I do think that games like TOTK were in a lot of categories that were unwarranted (like score, best direction), but I'm definitely not surprised. I agree with you on the RE4 standpoint, as I think that the Game of the Year (emphasis on year) should go to games that really shape and evolve the gaming industry and formula, and putting a remake over so many other games just doesn't really make sense. Ultimately, I think we should all take the Game Awards for what it is, and that is more of a media and press showcase rather than a award show for games. I almost feel like Geoff Keighley took the top 6 highest reviewed games and threw them into the GOTY list without much thought, and as most people know, the gaming review process is absolutely broken to its core.

okay let me give you my personal opinions on the nominees that were chosen Alan Wake 2: but I know it was one of the most anticipated sequels and pretty good despite some flaws a bit Baldur's gate 3: quite obvious who was going to show up here Marvel Spider-Man 2: also an obvious choice Resident Evil 4 remake: I would say bit of a weird choice Super Mario Bros. Wonder: I'm going to look as much as Mario as an iconic brand recognition of a franchise but but I don't feel like they're ready for nominee me with Wonder and obviously tears of the Kingdom: an obvious choice overall I would say for the most part is good but I feel like Starfield should have been a nominee for best game of the year and I feel they are kind of robbed for not showing up in any of the game of the year nominees

Starfield shouldn’t be nominated for GOTY. It was overhyped and delivered a mediocre experience with a dated design and bad performance on pc. Sorry but as a (former) Bethesda lover, I’m glad they didn’t get nominated and hope they don’t win the RPG nomination either since the RPG elements are so shallow compared with say a BG3. Best score nomination I would have been ok with, more than RPG It’s high time Bethesda up their game because if this is the quality they deliver for ES6 I’ll be extremely disappointed

Xbox didn’t have any hand in developing the game as it was already in its beta phase and was planned for a mid-summer 2019 release as they were running low on funds. They delayed the game for two years for added polish and adding in some boss fights after they were purchased. The only addition from the delay was the boss fights which the devs did themselves and not the Xbox team.

If that’s the case then I’d also say Hi Fi Rush, Redfall and Starfield were not eligible this year under that standard. That’d mean a Xbox game is probably not an Xbox game till it’s from a studio at least 3 years after being bought. I’m split on this. I was also going to call out Outer Worlds in 2019, but that game had a different publisher while the studio was bought by Xbox that year so didn’t mention it since it’s tricky. Personally I put Psychonauts 2 as a game under Xbox equally as much as the Bethesda games this year.

The criticisms in many reviews on it I'd personally agree with and can see after playing it (Cumbersome UI, amount of loading screens, lack of special feeling exploration compared to previous Bethesda RPG's, occasional writing). Still a good to great game, just with obvious hindrances that other games did not have in comparison.

I'd say if one only wants the average joe gamer's opinions then Golden Joysticks is that, if one wants purely critic choices then perhaps the DICE Awards, and then The Game Awards are more collective gathering critics/journalists/influencers opinions while letting the public have a portion of the votes. I played three games: Spider man 1 Morales and 2 within a month, i can understand why IGN and GS give it 8/10. I even don't think it can be nominated. HiFi Rush got 9/10 from IGN and GS. Even 10/10 from ign JAPAN and NME . Just like fresh air, there is no excessive promotion, Just a profect fusion of creativity and pop culture elements. Let us know all the joy that video games can bring. it got 5 nominations but not being nominated GOTY,What will our gaming industry become in the future if we do not encourage games like this, More super hero game in the future? Will the Oscars nominateBest pic for the The Avengers? It's hard for me to accept, what's wrong with TGA?

It depends. If one values the people's voices more than the media's then yes it's irrelevant and The Golden Joystick Awards is more for that audience since it's entirely voted on by anyone/everyone. The Game Awards is more about the industry/journalist/critics collectively choosing their best of the year and also accounting the audience as 10% of the votes as well so it's the most collective.

@@SamuraiKibiji all GOTY nominations were sequels/remakes for the most part. We may disagree. It seems as though our current generation’s creativity and skill set is sub par, same with music and movies. Just my opinion. I also believe the bias towards names like PlayStation and Nintendo should only go so far.

The area I do agree on in this front is putting that love for innovation in the Game Direction category better than they did. TOTK deserved it with how they really let the player cut loose, Baldur's Gate for showing what a game can really be with proper care put into it by what is technically an indie team, but the rest not really stuff that smaller games did like Cocoon or Viewfinder did in terms of innovative game design.

Whose surprised? Me? Nope. During the Game of the Year part I didn't bring up any shock about Xbox, just Mario and RE4. Not sure about the source of this. That said this isn't about who "wins", this is about nominations. The last time Xbox got GOTY noms specifically was 2021

I'm really on the fence about it. I really can see both sides of that debate cuz it is a fantastic remake built from the ground up...but choosing it over so many other great completely new games this year is just very...idk if I could have done that if I was submitting.

They were reviewed incredibly well and were all around great packages. Usually the games with the least criticism get into here, and these were the six most well reviewed games this year...other than maybe 3 others
