I'll be honest, I thought GOW 2018 was mediocre. That game was rarely fun for me to play at all because EVERY ENEMY had like, way too much health. How is this dead guy, falling apart at the bone and dripping parts of his orange blood everywhere, still alive after Kratos implants his axe in his skull? I did not like the combat at all, I thought the older games did that way better, and the story was... a strange direction to go in after the last time we saw Kratos he was killing himself.

I feel like it is big enough to be its own game, kinda, despite its flaws. Like, it has its own full story, a decent variety of bosses without a lot of the reused fluff that the base game had. It has a lot of flaws and imperfections, but it is basically like Elden Ring but 2/3rds of the size (without the fat of the original), which is still big. I honestly think it is a step up from the original in most ways. Having it be game of the year though still doesn't feel right though. Its a massive DLC that plays like a game within a game

The fact that Erdtree actually convinced them to add DLCs to the top award probably triggered everyone who played Wtcher Blood and Wine, CP2077 Phantom Liberty, FFXIV Shadowbringers, MH Iceborne etc...... back in the day.

PL was too short to consider it 'game-worthy' (Also 2.0 update came out not long before so people think the two are the same thing in their mind), B&W was good hence it won best RPG over DS3, Iceborne in a vacuum is not better than world in a vacuum, and can't really speak on shadowbringers. SoTe is a larger game than most games, how long to beat shows that. And with the scope it had, I would've been happy if they sold it as a fully priced game. I would not say that about the others.

At least Phantom Liberty gave you the option to skip over straight into the point in the story where the content is accessible. But I digress, DLC are, no matter their quality or quantity, are DLC. Unicorn Overlords was such a phenomenal experience, honestly. I'm super thrilled it even got a nomination amongst the same like ...6-7 games that dominated over half the categories. A lot of folks have really slept on it--anybody that's a fan of strategy games should really give it a look. Another one that didn't get a nomination here was Slay the Princess. Probably my personal favorite game of the year.

As usual: the music during the ceremony is what I'm looking forward to most. Can't wait to find out what song they pick for Metaphor! Also I'm very glad to hear more people giving Death Stranding the credit it was due. The game got mega panned when it came out for not being like MGS, but it truly is one of the biggest steps in the direction of "games as art" that we've had in awhile.

Ironically I pretty much disagreed with Muta on alll choices vote wise but I do somewhat agree with the sentiment. I wouldn't say the nominations are 'terrible' but Shadow of the Edtree should have been in a new DLC of the year category and we'd have almost none of this backlash. I personally think the GOTY selection is pretty good though. Rebirth and Metaphor are absolute masterpieces. SotE was pretty good but in the wrong category, I've heard great things about Wukong, Astrobot and the other game too.

How can a game of the year, be something that isn't even a game? Shadow of the Erdtree cannot be purchased and played by itself, it's not a game it's additional content, Erdtree should have been in the "ongoing game" category. Same argument could be made for remakes and remasters. They aren't stand alone games, they're often chasing the nostalgia crowd.

One thing about Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth is some people from the community did not like the story in it, at least from what I've heard, so it's very debatable on whether or not it deserves the best narrative for this year. For the show though, yeah, it blows. It's apparently made by the same people who made the Fallout show which really shocked me considering how many people liked the Fallout show. I mean, Yakuza has had a rocky history with the big screen, but it's really sad that one of Sega's most popular franchises stumbled with a modern film/show adaptation. At least the Sonic movies were not like that.

DLC shouldn't even be mentioned in a game award setting. To have it be nominated for GOTY is INSULTING. First off, you have to own the game in the first place to buy the DLC so that instantly disqualifies it. Secondly, this sets a HORRIBLE precedent where game companies will just release a game and then just keep releasing DLC for it and never come out with a new game. People really need to stop buying DLC completely. I mean it.
