My favourite part of all of this is that back in the day when we were screaming for them to please make a game set in Japan, they said it A. was too generic and B. wouldn't work. Not only has Ghost of Tsushima proved that wrong, they've now finally done it and still messed it up because the character more akin to old Assassin's Creed works but the one placed in to fit the new school combat doesn't. Ubisoft are really their own worst enemies.
@NeutralGuyDoubleZero10 күн бұрын
They waited way too long is the main problem. If shadows dropped as a 2012 game it would've been eaten up. But now even if they didn't split the characters up, people have played Tsushima now. Ubisoft isn't the only one making impressive open world action games anymore and what made them special has fizzled into thin air
@MaTtRoSiTy10 күн бұрын
It was a free win for them, they could have just taken it to the bank yet somehow they managed to take this obvious and easy formula (AC - make it based in Japan - add Japanese Samurai/Ninja - profit) and turn it into a complete fail. It is kind of unbelievable they could mess it up this much
@sjtaylor795010 күн бұрын
It *is* too generic though. This is grasping at straws. AC was always fun because it was a bunch of different, European settings. Ninjas have been done to death, and this is no different. They should absolutely have spent more time on some of their earlier settings, rather than trying to bash them out so quickly and cheaply.
@NeutralGuyDoubleZero10 күн бұрын
@sjtaylor7950 Sounds more like you just personally dislike the Japanese setting as a whole. Their fanbase was desperately asking for a japanese assassin creed game for over a decade and when suckerpunch did it, it was (shocker), an amazing critical and sales darling. But now Ubisoft is bloated and burnt out. People are sick of assassin's creed games and how samey and grindey they've become. Better studios now make big open world action games that once made Ubisoft unique. And this being delayed shows how terrified they are of Ghost Of Yotei which people are hyped for.

You absolutely can judge a piece of media's writing after 5 hours. That's more than enough time to set up a story and start digging into the meat of it. If it's not good by then, it probably never will be and even if it finds its footing later it's still a huge failing to not get there earlier.
@le_fancy_squid9 күн бұрын
Absolutely. If I'm not enjoying a book after 5 hours I'm not going to finish it, if I didn't enjoy the first 2 hours of a movie I'm not going to watch the sequel... 5 hours is more than enough time to make a game interesting, and if they can't make that happen that's on them, not me... I can't stand when a game takes even 1 hour to get going... The first part of a story is called 'The Hook' for a reason, it's supposed to grab the audience in, but more importantly keep them there. After 5 hours I think it's pretty clear that this IS the game, and it's just more soulless slop.

Even if you did kill random civilians, it's not like the various city-states could co-ordinate a police action to come after you- and even if they did, there was no way to actually take you down. Both Naoe and Yasuke are, by contrast, ordinary humans. Super athletic, maybe, but not beyond the ability of regular people to catch and kill. Also, Yasuke is perhaps one of the most recognisable men in Japan; it wouldn't be hard to keep track of his movements and arrange to gang up on him with overwhelming force if he is a known serial killer. And, ultimately, Odyssey was a power fantasy. Shadows doesn't claim to be. The standards for world reaction are much higher in a story that is supposed to be more 'realistic'.

My only real criticism of Syndicate was the uninspired combat. One attack button, a counter button, and a guard break button. The brawling should have been something similar to The Warriors, heavy handed, throwing people around, using the environment, using your Rooks and being able to properly mix things up. It could have leaned into it more, or even tried giving the twins more distinct play styles different to one another. At 6:44 the guard looks you straight in the face, then conveniently corrects their body position so you can do the assassination move. This kind of canned animation system is the curse of many modern games.

If I remember right in AC Unity it would've played a different animation depending on front, side, and back assassinations.
