As someone else stated , they no longer play this song as Tuomas has moved on - but when they did play it , he had said quite often he would have to remove his ear pieces or have the sound guys cut the power off as it was so very difficult for him to listen too.

There are a couple of notable moments in this song that may not be immediately noticed. First, when the words "Three minutes and counting" are uttered, it is exactly three minutes until the dramatic moment when Tuomas draws his hand across his throat. Second, at the end, Emppu and Marko go to stand beside Tuomas. They, were, at that time, the only two members of the band who had been there when the whole incident with Tarja happened, and they go to stand in solidarity with him. Melvin, you did a really good job with this song. One commmenter on another reaction referred to it as "the holy grail of Nightwish songs" and I think that is right. Thank you for handling the reaction as you did.

It remained on my To Do List ever since. I'm definitely glad I tackled this the way I did. Had I literally gone in blind I would have missed the point entirely. Sometimes doing a bit of research in advance clearly works in your favour 😊 And it's definitely up there. It's simply stunning. Yes, exactly. You should definitely listen to Anette's renditions of this song (and others) too. She tends to be the least popular of the 3 Nightwish singers, but wrongly so and I think she's also the most underrated! Compared to Floor and Tarja, she had the least impressive stage presence and her voice was definitely very different (more pop style). But she was (and still is) a great studio musician, so my advice is to listen to the studio albums Anette produced with Nightwish, I think this is where she shines the most, this one (and other songs) have some very unique little features that I really like. For me, this alone made Anette #2 after Floor for me!

That depression that Tuomas felt was due to the huge fan backlash after firing Tarja in 2005, even the Finnish Prime Minister chimed in. This performance is from Wembley Arena 2015. From the 2007 Dark Passion Play album, so originally recorded with Anette. The choir did all the operatic parts then. Floor wanted to do all of them, but Tuomas wanted to keep the boy soprano in the beginning. A VERY personal song for Tuomas, he would often have the sound guys remove the vocals from his in ear mix. You see Emppu go to Tuomas early, to check on how he is doing. Emppu and Marko go over at the end in a show of support, Floor even looks over for a moment before saying 'Thank You' The last part is some of the words Tuomas' Mother said to him when he went home. If we haven't mentioned it before, whenever you hear 'poet' or 'boy' , Tuomas is usually talking about himself. Song was partly inspired by Edgar Allen Poe's "The Pit and the Pendulum". The lyric '1000 pages of erased text' I see as all the songs he would have written , had the split with Tarja not happened. 1 of 3 songs pertaining to the breakup with Tarja. "Bye Bye Beautiful" and Master Passion Greed. None of the 3 are played anymore, Master Passion Greed(Marko lead vocals)has never been played live. The music video for "Bye Bye Beautiful" often gets blocked in some countries, so if you want to hear that, suggest the remastered live version from Exit festival 2008, on Nightwish Arena channel. Refresher, 2nd and current drummer is Kai Hahto. TPATP is the 2nd longest song in their discography to date. Only "The Greatest Show On Earth", at 21 minutes, is longer (Live versions at Tampere 2015 and Wembley 2015). First lyric : The End. Last lyric: The Beginning.

The Poet and the Pendulum is the song about there 1st singer Tarja Turnunen getting fired in 2005 , HERE IS MY INTERPRETATION OF THIS - The Poet and the Pendulum was written after firing Tarja the original singer. She was the face of Nightwish at the time, and Tuomas (Keyboards) wrote this and considered her a muse to many of the songs he had written at that point. They had also grown up in the same city and knew each other since early childhood. All the band members decided together to fire her for acting too much of a diva And her husband & Manager was stepping way outta bounds concerning the band business He always wanted more money , only big paying show but the band did it for the love of music and there fans . According to all the band members, Tarja was missing lots of rehearsals and would not even travel with the band anymore. Tuomas was painted as the devil by many fans, and went through a deep depression. He even considered ending the band . He wrote The Poet and the Pendulum at that time, and actually kills himself in the song. He said he killed himself in the song at the 10:00 time stamp , as to kill the pain he was going through . To this day every time he plays it, it takes him back to those feelings, and shows on his face. In the last part, Mother and Father, words are said to him that his real mother said to him at that time of his deep depression. One part that touches me at the end when the guitarist Emppu and bassist Marko, the only other two involved with firing Tarja (that were still active with the band at the time of this show )were standing with Tuomas at the end in solidarity and love., NOTE : the 1st two words are (The End) and the last two words are (The Beginning) representing the end of the 1st era of Nightwish and the beginning of the next era

I am so very happy that Tuomas had the emotinal strenght and artistic capability to do this instead of joining the club of all the rock/ metal/ grunge talents who could not. This is why we need art studies AND why all need to learn at very young age about feelings, healthy self worth and (to be frank) that boys do have all feelings too because they are, in fact, humans.

The demo version of the album 'Dark Passion Play' was recorded, obviously, after Tarja left and before Anette came. So Marko had to sing the whole demo album alone, including 'The Poet and the Pendulum'. The demo version is on YT. "Nightwish - The Poet and the Pendulum, demo version(Marco) + lyrics" Lyrics in the description box. A few lines were left out from the final version: Would you like to rape my rotting carcass? Dissect my heart? And desecrate my rest? It would make you come, wouldn't it? Plus some other minor changes. Anette's version is quite good as well. Live at Wacken Open Air 2008, and Live at Gampel Open Air 2008 for example. She understands what Tuomas went through and really feels it, but she has her limitations, (operatic vocals). So I think Floor can better portray all the different emotions in this song. Floor had a burnout in 2012, she didn't want to have anything to do with music after her band broke up against her will. She had just recovered when Nightwish asked her to join the band. So I think he could relate to what Tuomas went through.

Guy Elliott was the boy soprano at the start. He was from St Mary's Choir School, Reigate, UK. Another boy soprano sang the part "sparkle my scenery..." on the album but Floor said that she could do it live and Tuomas agreed. If it is possible to have just one favourite Nightwish song, this is mine. So relatable. Marko sang the original demo - darker, cruder, more 4 letter words, very angry - not quite as angry or heavy as "Master, Passion, Greed" from the same point in time and feelings! The third song of the "Tarja thing" trilogy was "Bye, Bye Beautiful".

@@melvinthinks Floor and Tarja dominant the KZbin reaction space as NW is concerned. Which is all fine they are both incredibly talented obviously. I'd say that's your call. DPP is 20 years old now, man I'm old I bought that when it came out 😭 you can always give it a listen and make it an album of week or shout out or w.e works. NW fans are crazy so I'm not gonna tell you what they want 🤣 I just think Anette gets skipped over quite a bit but she was the beautiful voice on my personal favorite albums of NW Also for back catalogs on bands that would depend on the band. If you discover Machine Head today from Of Kingdom and Crown, yeah you absolutely need to back catalog that. There is 30 years of killer music to discover that evolves and changes over time. Lorna Shore you don't need to back catalog to Tom Barber era. For the record Tom Barber LS era is great but I wouldn't suggest it. For like NW you could get by in just doing the hits. To me they have 3 bingable albums in 30 years and really the have a formula that hasn't changed a great deal over that time. Great band great music but in my opinion you can get what they are like via the hits. So back catalogs are very band dependent imo.

That's kinda how I try and tackle new, but older bands I discover. Usually, they'll have their 'classic' album/s that warrant a listen from start to end. And then there are some shockers! 😩 On some occasions, every album from a band is faultless and I try and follow their career chronologically. Other times, especially some of the classic bands, blues artists etc. you can get away with a compilation album. But I try to be careful, if listening to an album, not to follow album 1/2/3 etc in quick succession otherwise I forget which songs are on which album and it all just blurs together! I might spend a month or two listening to certain records. Sleep Token, Orbit Culture, Whitechapel, Lorna Shore, At The Gates, Tori Amos to name but a few, for me of late.

Sargant Emma from Nightwish's "Las Vegas chapter".... 😉 I think I missed, all (or only one???), your previous Nightwish reactions, sorry 😘...; but I'm here now. The first thing I noticed was that lovely portrait (drawing?), of Amy Winehouse...; and I KNEW I was gonna like you 😁 Btw... when the "child inside him" finishes the, "Now I only have 3 minutes and counting - monolog" ; it "ACTUALLY TAKES "THREE MINUTES" , until the "blade" gets him. Imagine writing music for so many instruments AND the angry battle between "Judas and Tuomas", (Marco and Floor); and to get it so perfecly" within 3 minutes...!!! THAT'S AMAZINGLY GOOD!! # We love Tuoumas ❤ PS: Love the reaction, fellow "soldier in the Nightwish army". 😊

One of the best pieces of art of ever made and in particular this performance! This song was form the "Dark passion Play" album, first album with Anette Olson as frontwoman lead singer, so not Tarja "Master Passion Greed" is my personal favorite from the album, as it is arguably Nightwish's heaviest song and its all Marco on vocals.

This was an Annette song. It's about how Tuomas felt about having to kick Tarja out the band, and the backlash he got for it (it was a unanimous band decision, but he took all the flack) Theres a demo version with Marko doing ALL the vocals floating around on the internet... The Dark Passion Play album is an absolute masterpiece, but I hope Tuomas never feels like that ever again.

The last part-as I have always understood it-is the mourning of Tuomas's mother (and metaphorically, how friends and the world might experience these events). Interestingly, Marko is releasing his new album and collaborating with Tarja.

Tuomas is in my opinion the greatest songwriter of our century, No other band brings out so much emotion in me. I`ve heard this song countless times and still get tears. Anette Olzen was the singer when this album came out and I really liked her vocals, not many people appreciated her, That said Floor really is the best fit for the band. Kai Hahto is the drummer now taking over for Jukka. I highly recommend doing more reactions from them as they have many more beautiful songs.

This song is such an absolute masterpiece, flawlessly produced for the Wembley "Vehicle of Spirit" concert in 2015 - with the staging, the lighting, the digital screens, the emotions and intent in the singing all leading to a piece that is more theatre than metal concert. The bit that hits me most - after all the internal/external voices have battled - is the rising to a crisis point JUST before Marko comes in with his gutterals. That sense of crisis is so so intense, and if you've been there yourself you know that feeling. I'm also a lyrics person, and at 50 years old I have lost way too many frequencies in my hearing to tolerate most death metal. Though I like it. I can manage women like Tatiana or Alissa when they growl because the frequency range is more audible to me (maybe their diction is also better, I don't know) but I so very profoundly feel that if lyrics are worth writing, they are worth listening to. What is especially notable for Floor - often in her performances and especially in this one - she is very careful in the higher sections to make sure she can be understood. This is why this performance makes me think so much of musical theatre - if you are telling a story, the story needs to be heard.
@melvinthinks2 ай бұрын
Me too - I adore Tati and Jinjer and was exposed to Angela from Arch Enemy a few months back, and heard Alissa earlier this year. Despite their harsh vocals, they still enunciate their words so well. Can't wait for the new Jinjer album next year!

Yeah, I like that drop as well. It's a (partial) chromatic scale, which is relatively common in classical music, but much less so in contemporary. For whatever reason, it's at times used in metal, though. In spite of this song being one of my absolute favourites, regardless of artist and genre, I don't listen to it too often. I've battled depression for too many years of my life, and this one hits me at a deep level. I feel that Tuomas somehow managed to capture the inner turmoil of depression remarkably well. Regarding Tarja's name, Germanic languages and incidentally also Finnish pronounce "j" as "y" (as in "yes"). So, it's more like "TARR-yah". Don't forget to roll the r's! 😁

I am so glad you said that. I always thought maybe it was a suicide note by Tuomas Holopainen. _"The blade fell upon him, the blade will keep on descending, Tuomas was called from the cares of the world."_ And I thought maybe Floor, previously Anette, was singing in the perspective of his mother. _"Be still, my son."_ And then I thought I was reading way too much into it, but every time I listen to it, the thought just comes floating back. I kind of thought maybe it was what he would have liked to hear from a parent, I don't know.

You'll find many Nightwish fans have their favourite singers, and often sadly Anette seems to get lost in the mix. For me it goes song by song, for example Sleeping Sun will always be Tarja's. Amaranth for Anette, and I couldn't imagine the other two singers singing Lanternlight, only Floor. That's why we Nightwish fans are blessed, so many different styles of songs, three talented singers with their own interpretations of the songs they sing, and nearly thirty years of the band to enjoy.

@@melvinthinks Tuomas has the ability to tailor the songs to the singers' bodies. Unfortunately, Anette had the misfortune that she has no classical opera training and her vocal range is a little lower than Tarja's, which caused problems for her live and gave the impression that she was a mediocre singer, her strength definitely lies more in the studio. With Floor there were suddenly no more restrictions for Tuomas and he used that for songs that he would never have been able to achieve with the other two. But with Floor, even the heaviest vocal lines still sound easy, which is why some people think he can't take advantage of Floors. He just didn't manage to really push her to her limits.
