From "I'm totally confused" to "I could do this dance" to "I wanna join their gang!" to "Yes! Slay!" to "I feel so filthy watching this but I kinda like it." ..... Welcome to Rocky Horror Picture Show fandom, Trixy Blue!! --- Also, just like when reading Shakespeare, if a line in this movie can be taken in a sexual way, you should assume it was absolutely meant in a sexual way.

My Pop and I used to go to every "monster" movie ever made. One day in June of 1978, I was 14, and Pop took me to see RHPS at midnight at the Falls Theatre. I have no idea how he reacted to the film-he was in back with the virgins. I was in the front row having my life changed. Within a month I was in the stage show and even toured with a local production. Was in the cast for five years. That movie literally gave my life a framework. Long live RHPS.

ikr? Going to RHPS for the first time and seeing Mr. Bungle live for the first time (knowing nothing about their music beyond the fact that FNM's Mike Patton was their singer) were the two most jarring first experiences I've ever had with entertainment. Blue this movie had a HUGE cult following for years and is easily the most famous midnight movie event of all time. People would dress up their favorite character and bring props like rice (not sand), or dance like the Time Warp. Audience members would take turns acting out the scenes when their character had an important scene in the movie. This went on for years and still has midnight showings all over the U.S. to this day.

Even during Covid, when everything was shut down, they still did private performances with and for the actors and their families every Saturday during lockdown to keep the trend alive. "A graveyard? Next to a wedding?" -- Many old, rural churches in America had a graveyard right next to them where the local residents would be buried. It not only made logistical sense, but it was considered "hallowed ground". And yes, churches also book back-to-back events over the weekend so you might have a wedding, then a funeral service next. I never thought it sounded weird until now, lol.

@@vandergrad Yes, for centuries, you got buried next to a church. However, you had to be a member of that church. In fact, the very wealthy nobility were buried IN the church, often under the floor. As cities grew in size and crowding during the Industrial Revolution, church property became too valuable for graveyards. In the 19th century, the "rural cemetery" concept arose, a large area of land just outside the city, where anyone could be buried no matter what religion they practiced, if at all. In Victorian times, with the rise of street cars, families were often take picnic lunches and stroll around the rural cemetery - seems ghoulish to us to day but with limited transportation, the cemetery was a practical trip within range to escape the city confines for a day.

19:49 Why does Riff-Raff torment Rocky with the candelabrum? Because that's what the sadistic henchman did in the original Frankenstein (1931). 32:11 This is obviously a callback to King Kong (1933) as Rocky climbs the RKO mast with the damsel. Also, Rocky is mute and can sing only during his intro, "The Sword of Damocles" and "Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch Me". Poor Peter Hinwood, he only agreed to this role as he needed some cash and nobody was going to see this weird low-budget film anyway...

In order to fully experience "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" you have to go to a real theater with a live cast acting out and spoofing the movie while it is playing on screen. Also, keep in mind, this movie represents many things. A throw back to the Sci-Fi/Horror movies of the 50s, rock and roll musicals, and the change of sexual attitudes within the culture. The first song makes so many references to classic movies. The basic plot is aliens are creating a Frankenstein monster movie as a rock and roll musical with very pushing sexual themes for its time. However, if you ever do see it in a theater with a live audience, you have to. A fan cast going through the motions, everyone going down towards the front of the theater to dance to the Time Warp, throwing rice at the wedding scene.. shooting water pistols during the Brad/Janet rain scene.. The audience yelling particular dialogue at various moments of the movie.

TRHPS did push the barrier but wasn't pushing that hard. Came from the 70's. There was an incredibly liberal sexual culture at the time.. Hippies, communal living, group sex, free love, psychedelics, transcendental religion. Long before the fundamentalists started reinfecting everyone with puritanism. Rocky Horror gets a lot from the New York 'scene' - which is a big part of why it has a weird reality & feels so different to anything else.

This was a stage musical first, and Tim Curry (Frank N. Furter) and Meat Loaf (Eddie) were both in the first American cast. This was Tim's real big break and he went on to have an amazing career in film, television, and theater. Among his roles: Cardinal Richelieu in 'The Three Musketeers' (1993), Dr. Petrov in 'The Hunt For Red October', Rooster in 'Annie', Wadsworth in 'Clue: the Movie', and Darkness in 'Legend' in films. He also originated Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart opposite Ian McKellen as Antonio Sallieri in the Broadway production of 'Amadeus', and King Arthur in 'Spamalot', the musical version of 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail'. A couple of years ago, Tim suffered a stroke and has been in a wheelchair ever since. Meat Loaf (real name Marvin Lee Adday) created Eddie AND Dr. Scott in the stage version. While Meat Loaf continued to make movies (Fight Club being one of the biggest), he was mainly known for his music with songwriter Jim Steinman with the huge-selling rock albums Bat Out Of Hell', ' Bat Out Of Hell II: Back Into Hell', and 'Bat Out Of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose', which combined have sold over 100 million copies worldwide. Among his hits "I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)", "Paradise by The Dashboard Light", 'Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad", "Life Is A Lemon (And I Want My Money Back)", "Rock And Roll Dreams Come True", "Heaven Can Wait", and "A Kiss Is A Terrible Thing To Waste" (music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and lyrics by Steinman). Meat Loaf passed away in January of this year.

Tim Curry, who plays Frank-N-Furter here, also played Pennywise the clown in the original movie adaptation of Stephen King's "It". Which is also a movie that fits this month's theme if you havent seen it already :) fun fact: in the opening song, the mouth/lips is of the actress who played Magenta, but the voice singing is actually that of Richard O'Brien (who played Riff-Raff), and he's also the creator behind this. This was a stage production before becoming a movie, and in the stage production Magenta sang the opening song, so she was pretty miffed when she wasnt allowed to sing it for the movie adaptation. But what can you do when the author of the work insists on singing it himself :p Here he is singing an acoustic version of it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bp3cqKmOj7h2fKs I believe that's from the extra material on the original dvd release of this in the 90s. It's also nice because it shows clips from all the classic horror movies referenced in the song :)

I've been seeing it advertised here in Sacramento, CA. I'd love to go but I'm saving for a rather expensive 65th birthday celebration next summer -- Amtrak, motel, VIP concert ticket -- and I'm determined to make up for my 60th, which was ruined by a broken ankle. I used to go to San Francisco's Strand Theater on Market Street. That's the main downtown street, with tall building lining the street, acting as a wind tunnel. I went as Janet, in bra, stockings, and half-slip, freezing in the wind whipping down the street at 11:30 at night, even with my dad's white button-down shirt. Once I got "hired" as unofficial security (simply keeping people downstairs, out of the balcony, until the pre-film cartoons started -- no pay but I got in for free whenever I wanted) I didn't have to stand in line anymore and I got to view the theater's widely varied genres of movies.

You don't have to feel dirty watching this. The plot is straight from Classical Greek theatre, the theme being what happens when mortals, even aliens, dare to be like the Gods, with no limit or consequences to their behaviour. You can basically imagine yourself at the Theatre of Dionysus in Athens, watching the latest play from Sophocles or Aristophanes.

I saw quite a few 'deeper' meanings. Brad and Janet were engaged and on their way to speak with Dr. Scott for advice (science), but having a flat tire caused them to be stranded and philosophically it could be interpreted they 'never left the car' and began exploring their new options (nature) with Frankenfurter being the embodiment of several religious taboos. It just keeps getting crazier if one allows their inner self to associate all the actions on screen as pure symbolism. "I'll remove the cause, but not the symptom" is a strong commentary on the nature of reproduction and life in general.

American tradition is to throw rice after the wedding. No clue why though. Also it's common for some churches to have graveyards right on their property. I went to a baptist church in the country and you had to drive through the graveyard to get to the church directly behind it.

There was always a race to run to the screen at the theater, during the wedding church musical scene, for someone to stand where the pitchfork was thrown. The person would feign getting stabbed and fall dead. The cool thing is it was always respectful, if it looked like you wouldnt get there first, everyone else would back down to make sure the person who did, had a great performance. I went to see it in theaters about 20 times, and I tried for the pitchfork positions about 10....I made it once, and its was COOL AF!

I saw it 4 times in my local theater, performed live by an amazing crew from London. Those evenings absolutely make it to my top ten best nights of my life. Most of the audience was dressed up in corsets, heels and with heavy makeup - yes, men, too, a lot were better dressed than their girls. People brought rice, paper plates, toilet paper, water balloons, little umbrellas and toast. And made good use of all of it, the theater was a mess (at the entrance was a huge tip jar for the cleaning staff, it got pretty full by the end of the night). The narrator was hilarious and engaged in ridiculous banter with the audience. During the intermission, some of the cast members sat on the edge of the stage, joked with the people, criticized outfits etc. If you ever get the chance to see it live, you have to go. Put on an outfit you'd usually wouldn't dare to wear, but always wanted to. It will be a night you'll remember forever.

I went to one of the first performances of the stage play in 73 on the Kings Road in London. It was put on in a derelict cinema and the stage show portion is a near replica of the cinema, with all the action being the same as in the movie. The actors playing Rocky, the two girls, Riff Raff and Dr Scott were all in the play. It was a hot ticket at the time as nothing like this had been put on the stage before. This was in the days long before the responses became part of the show,

Your reactions to this were priceless, its a great blast and the references are clever and deep and keep on giving. I just would ask you to imagine yourself in the audience for the very first night of the original stage production... 19th June 1973, or even earlier at the two pre-run performances... imagine the mores and morals of society then... and now imagine what takes place in front of your eyes. If you are 30 on that first night, you were born during the second world war, a year before D-Day... WTF!!

Trixy, as others have mentioned, you have NOT TRULY experienced the Rocky Horror Picture Show, until you have seen it at the local cinema, Midnight showing or not. There is a pre-movie costume contest. People bring props to throw around, umbrellas to open, they yell at the characters on-screen when it is time to do so. THAT is the real Rocky Horror Show. I am not a part of this culture but I was a kid in 1975, upon the movie's release. I finally saw it in 1984 or 85, in one of Montreal's largest cinema's, downtown. The Seville Festival Cinema had announced that it was closing down -- the landlord was turning the property into a mall, ugh. I sat at the back of the upstairs balcony. An elderly German couple made their way up toward where I sat, but they could not find seats together. They were dressed up just like it was still the elegant 1930s. Madame sat next to me, while Monsieur had to sit two or three rows in front of us. As the audience began to vocally and physically participate in the show, the old lady looked in dismay all around her, trying to avoid the flying rice and the thrown toast and water, muttering to herself in her accent, "Vat eez zees? Vhy are zey srowing theengs in ze air, like zat?" As the audience participation grew stronger, she muttered words like "Aneemals" and looked fearful for her well-being. Between songs, I took it upon myself to lean in and ask her how she and her husband had known to come see this movie. She wasn't sure what I meant, so I prodded, "Did you and your husband hear about this film, on the News, perhaps?" They had, she admitted. "Well", I went on, "the reason this movie is famous for decades and on the News, is because of how the audience participates with the characters and the story, as it progresses." The next song began, the audience sang along, kept enjoying itself, and I didn't know if I had helped the poor old woman. After about the fifth song, the woman's husband came stomping up the steps to our row, and proclaimed, "Come on, ve arrre goink. Zees eez crrrazy and I cannot stand to be herre one more moment!" I thought she would be relieved, but instead, my explanation had had a wonderful, loosening effect upon her. Not only did Madame disagree with Monsieur, but she actually pleaded, "Oh, nooo, I vant to stay! Pleeease, eet eez so much fun!" "NO! Ve are goink! "Pleeeeease, please let us stay." "Come on, enough... Now!" And the poor old lady had to get up and drearily follow her husband down the steps of the Seville's balcony, to the upstairs lobby and out of that magnificent movie palace forever. A few weeks later the Seville was demolished. TMy first apartment was only a few blocks away and across the street, so the Seville had become my living room, not having a living room in my apartment. The only other movie that we all got to enjoy during those final weeks was Jonathan Demme's new concert film, "Talking Heads Stop Making Sense". That is an equally wonderful memory, with its own tale to tell. Trixy, if you react to "Stop Making Sense", I shall relate to you that story, if you like.

The Eddie part is a bit confusing because they cut a few bits from the play that didn't make the movie. Eddie was Frank's first experiment, but he rejected Frank for Columbia. Frank froze Eddie in the freezer, which he breaks out of in the party. That's not really clear in the movie why he was in the freezer.

The LEGENDARY Tim Curry in the LEGENDARY role of Dr Frankenfurter. The movie was first a stage show and the creator is the guy that plays Riff Raff. This is THE Cult Classic Movie. Every year at Halloween small theatres around the worl will play Rocky Horror. And there is Audience Participation. People come dressed as characters, and sing along and do certain things, like throw bread at the screen during a certain scene. Rocky Horror is an expereience as much as it is a movie.

I first saw this film in the old Varsity Theater in Palo Alto, California, with a few hundred young people in attendance, many of them dressed as characters from the film. Turned out, they knew all the dialogue and would shout it out loud at the most amusing moments. They also knew all the songs, and when the music came on, some of them would run up on the stage in front of the screen and perform the songs with the movie running behind them. It was hilarious. Of course, I was drunk. So, that helped. When I left, I sang "Let's Do The Time Warp Again" all the way home. I'm sure the neighbors didn't appreciate my effort. 😏
