Back in the eighties, I dont know if there was a lot of right side up or upside down meaning, but I went through college with a pink triangle pin on my jacket - it was the pride symbol along with the lower case lambda before rainbow flag became a big national thing.

Since I don't think anyone realized in the reaction (or at least didn't say it out loud), Eddie was in the freezer because Frank used half his brain to make Rocky. He was one of Frank's many lovers but when he and Columbia fell in love Frank got jealous.

I’ve been going to live showings of RHPS since I was 16 (I’m 33 now) with my best friend and we still do it every year! There’s NOTHING like attending a live viewing of the show. People shout out callback lines, throw things, etc. it’s a hell of a lot of fun and I look forward to it every year.

Many Brits of a certain age know him best as "Reckless Rick" from legendary game-show "The Crystal Maze" in its original run. It's had other presenters since then, but nobody can hold a candle to O'Brien, who I think was the mastermind who first created it as well as presenting it. He was particularly memorable for obnoxiously playing the harmonica really loudly to distract contestants if they were doing too well, or relying too much on clues from their team. He's been in a few other "groovy" cult films too - he had a relatively small part in Flash Gordon, and a rather more prominent one in Dark City.

I'm sure there are others commenting fun facts, and I haven't finished the video so some may have been said, but these are some fun facts ab Rocky Horror: 1) It was originally a stage production with a lot of the same cast! 2) The guy who pays Raff, Richard O'Brien, wrote the musical on his downtime between acting gigs 3) Speaking of the tap dancing, Eric, the role of Columbia was given to Campbell purely because of her ability to tap dance 4) In order to keep much of the original cast for the movie, the director had to maintain a smaller budget and a much tighter time schedule 5) During the dinner scene when you find out about Eddie, the director only told Tim Curry about the choice so everyone's reactions in that scene are genuine 6) Regarding this film's release in the 70s, a radical but still more socially conservative time, it flopped majorly when it first released. The Waverly Theatre in NYC began showing the film at midnight showings in 76 because they still wanted to show it but knew people wouldn't come see it during the day. This is what really helped it's mass cult following - you didn't have to be afraid to go see the gay trans sex musical (especially if you saw yourself in the characters) since no one else was out besides others into the gay trans sex musical. This is also what encouraged things like dressing up for showings. 7) The interactivity that comes with social showings of the movie actually comes from the film's worse parts. When the audience got bored they thought it may be fun to yell back, and this made it's way into every part of the musical (shoutout the bread) 8) This was Susan Serandon's first musical - and she played much of the role while horribly sick. Due to budget constraints there wasn't money for a lot of heaters so everyone was kind of ill all the time, but after the pool scenes was when Serandon got a major flu yet she still went on 9) Barry Bostwick, the guy who plays Brad, origniated the role of Danny Zuko in Grease (he also makes a cameo in the Rocky Horror Glee episode)! 10) There are 2 technical sequels, but only one of them was ever actualized. O'Brien produced a movie called Shock Treatment, focused on Brad and Janet, but it was a flop even cult-follower wise. The other is a written script that has never gone anywhere, but it focuses on Frank-n-Furter's mother in Transsexual (you can read the script online though) 11) According to the written script, Brad goes on to become a bottomless go-go dancer and dies falling from a trapeze 12) The movie was originally meant to be shot in black and white for the first portion (the production company ultimately did not let that happen), so that's why when you go to the lab for the first time it's so bright and colorful. Entering into Frank-n-Furter's world as super intense and queer experience still lands though 13) The guy who played Rocky, Peter Hindwood, was a model who quit acting after his role in the movie. He did auction his little gold shorts in 1994 though, and got $1,000 for them 14) Richard O'Brien also voices the dad in Phineas and Ferb 15) Midnight showings are still super popular! The experience is super interactive; if you decide to go you'll probably be branded with a lipstick V on your forehead to show you're a rocky horror virgin if you've never been to a live showing before. People will often get up and start acting out the movie on "stage," there's bread thrown, popcorn, water guns shoot off during There's a Light, and even more 16) I don't know if you guys point it out or not yet but I'll say it here anyways - Eddie and Columbia were the human couple prior to Brad and Janet to have been taken by Frank-n-Furter; the tires going out in the beginning are because Frank-n-Furter lines the road with spikes to entice humans into his home

It’s a Jump to the Left … which I have experienced the stage adaptation to this story & it was wild - Oda was definitely inspired Ivankov's appearance is based on Doctor Frank-n-Furter from the "Rocky Horror Show", but he was based on Ivankov’s first voice actor Norio Imamura who was a friend of Oda & was in an acting trope with Luffy’s voice actor Mayumi Tanaka - During the dinner party scene when Furter reveals that they been dining on Eddie in order for the actors had a genuinely shocked Sharman told only Tim Curry - Tim Curry tried to attend a midnight screening of Rocky Horror at a New York theater which he called but they didn’t believe that it was him & when he went in person to get a ticket he was thrown out for being an imposter that is until he showed them his passport - Fun fact there are Easter eggs in this movie & I mean actual colored eggs hidden around the set

i was the narrator in a college production of this show when i was 16 - it was SO MUCH FUN. i can still do all the choreo 4 years later. every time somebody asked me to summarise the plot, though, despite my entire job being to narrate it, i had to basically shrug and go "i dunno, gay aliens and living unapologetically as yourself? or maybe just that everyone looks good in fishnets. who knows."

I stumbled into this movie at the age of 12. I missed my train and it was raining, so I decided to go to the movies until next train. Walked in and all other viewers were fully dressed and prepared. It probably changed my life path. They had it all: water pistols for the rain, Tp, sparklers, you name it. Went there 2 days later, fully prepared. Also introduced my daughters to it later❤.

My Senior year of high school my girlfriend took me to a midnight showing of Rocky Horror at a little old theater in downtown and I saw this for the first time with all of the audience participation action. It played at midnight every Saturday and Sunday and I think we ended up going about 40 times. This was just 4 years after it was made to a relatively new cult sensation (1979). You definitely need to see it in the theater with crowd participation, it's a trip...

Richard O'Brien (who plays Riff Raff here) actually wrote it after being fired from another stage musical (I believe it was Starlight Express, but not entirely sure). He was so annoyed that he went home and wrote the show as a kind of F**k You to the more "typical" stage musical.

What's cool AF is the fact that due to midnight showings of this film, it's been in circulation since it debuted in 1975. Making it the longest running movie of film history. I'm 63 yo and I was about 16ish, I think when this movie came out. It was wildly popular with teenagers for most of my HS years and beyond. They'd play it ever Friday night at many theaters. I remember we'd go to watch it occasionally and when we did we'd take props, like lighters and things so we could all respond together at certain times in the movie. Many people would dress like the characters and of course we'd all get up and go to the front of the theater and do the time warp together! The Rocky Horror is a great teenager memory for me.

Wrong, it was a stage play first in 1973 in London featuring the majority of the movie cast, it moved to New York in 74 then they made the movie in 75. The castle was Bray studios in the UK which was the mansion used in all the Hammer Horror movies. While the UK was quite bohemian in the 70’s we were too strait laced to embrace it but you guys loved it and it used to be shown every Friday\Saturday midnight in theatres across the US. There used to be a cast who’d play out the movie below the screen and all viewers would cosplay and shout a participation script back at the screen. Not sure if this still happens but here in the UK we don’t show it so it only happens when there’s a new stage production. Richard O’Brien who created the show (Riff Raff) is a well known to personality in the UK who hosted a game show called the crystal maze in the 90’s but he’s very much retired now, Tim Curry isn’t faring that well either after he suffered a stroke a while back. Shocktreatment is the odd sexual movie continuing Brad and Janet’s adventures in their home town of Denton, new actors play Brad and Janet but many of the actors return playing new characters, the actor who played Ralph at the start returns with Ruby Wax playing his now ex wife Betty it’s fun but not as good.

I was in Ocean Beach, California in 1979 when I first saw this. It played every Friday and Saturday night at midnight at this one theater. The line started forming for both midnight performances around 9:00pm. They used ropes to section off a portion of the sidewalk and that's where the party started. The diehard fans would always be at the front of the line, and they would also dress in the costumes of the actors in the movie. By 10:00pm or so, the line extended around the corner of the building... alcohol and drugs were rumored to be present... then the doors opened (the poor people at the end of the line would usually not get in because the theater was full). Once inside... several fans would go up on stage, while the movie played in the background (in costume) and act out the scenes as they appeared on screen behind them. Meanwhile, the audience shouted out pre-planned responses to about 80% of the lines in the movie. For instance: The scene where Janet is lamenting her poor choices of the evening, and she says... "If only the car hadn't broken down." The audience would shout in unison... "BUT IT DID!"... "If only we hadn't come to this castle."... "BUT YOU DID!"... etc... If you ask me about other lines in the movie, I will try to remember the responses we yelled and reply to you... I don't know how long this movie was playing every weekend in Ocean Beach. I was stationed in San Diego in the Navy for 2 years (1979-1980) and it played the entire time I was there... every Friday and Saturday at Midnight... line starts forming at 9:00pm. I saw the Rocky Horror Picture Show at that theater 32 times. (Everyone kept a count of how many times they had participated.) I went back after my first experience just to see what the movie was about. I mean, a large part of the plot was obvious from the get-go... but I had to watch the movie about 5 times before I completely noticed all the plot points... there were way too many fun distractions to care about plot, at first. The good ole days...

You guys should really go see a shadow cast performance! A live cast performs with the movie playing on the screen, and there's props and call backs the audience can use! The bread, for example, you would throw when Dr. Frank-n-Furter says "A toast-" (throw bread) "-to absent friends!" The experience brings this to a whole new level.

What a cult CLASSIC!!!! One of the quirkiest movies ever, with a following and traditions wackier than your average visit to Florida. The only movie my dad has seen more than twice. He rarely even rewatches movies at all. But he has told me that he has seen this movie well over 2 dozen times. He even played the role of Eddie in the theatre by riding a tricycle up and down the aisles during his big entrance scene a couple times. You see, in select theatres they would show the movie along with a bunch of added effects and actors doing stuff during the movie. There were even lines the audience participated in. Such as when they say "Great Scott!" the audience threw roles of "Scott" branded toilet paper across the theatre. And when the male visitor's name was called out you would say "Asshole!" There are so many things I am not remembering but my dad basically has the whole routine memorized by heart.

I absolutely love this movie! Made it a yearly Halloween tradition to watch this every year and listen to the music. My favorites are "There's A Light", "Time Warp", and "Creatures Of The Light". Also I remember watching that Glee episode when it was new and was like "how was the able to air this on TV?!" I think this and the song Born This Way was their only controversial episode/song! Also, also remember. Despite them being in highschool setting most of the Glee casts actual ages at the time was between early 20's to mid 20's so they was able to consent to the more "risky" songs and topics! Glee went on from 2009 to 2015

For a VERY fun listen check out the album "The Rocky Horror Punk Rock Show." It's an album of really amazing punk covers of all the songs by various bands including Swingin' Utters, Big D and the Kids Table, Tsunami Bomb and Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. Also 15:00 yes I would go to the room. Life can either be long and boring or possibly short, but fascinating. I'll take the latter every time. Anything bizarre is worth investigating. Take me down every rabbit hole. I've found myself in some truly precarious situations due to having that attitude - everything from crack houses in Detroit to brothels in Medellin (I haven't slept with a prostitute, but I've hung out with quite a few of them and they're brilliant, fascinating people) - and my life is full to the brim because of all that. It's one thing to know about crazy humans. It's another thing entirely to experience them and totally worth whatever risks are associated.

I was a teenager and part of the 1975 phenomenon - seen this at least 50 times at a theatre in Montreal. It was an experience ! Nothing like it since. We dressed in character, threw rice and bread, danced and sang every song by heart. What memories!

the guy who answers the castle door RIFF RAFF is Richard O'brien who wrote this. he also hosted Crystal Maze a 90s UK tv game show he was brilliant in that too

The first time I saw this it was the early 80’s. There was a live cast shadowing the movie on a stage right below the screen. People would throw rice, use squirt guns while holding newspapers over their heads and a lot more.

You def need to see Shock Treatment. Is almost the same cast, but more modern weirder movie. It follows the adventures of Brad and Janet when their marriage is falling apart and the are trapped inside a TV station in a reality TV show (that is, decades before reality TV was a thing)

This movie came out the year I was born. So, when the 90s came around, I was in my late teens/early 20s. I was also in a theater stage production, playing Janet. To help promote our show, we visited movie theaters performing with the shadow casts, that performed the show live in front of the movie theater screen. I can say for certain, having done that in many theaters in multiple states, the vast majority of the audience, were in fact teenagers. So yes, this movie is extremely popular with teenagers as well as adults. Fun fact about the Glee episode The actors that played Brad and Eddie, were also in that Glee episode in cameo roles.

Saw this for the first time as the stage show on the Kings Road Chelsea in a due for demolition theatre in 73. Rocky, Magenta, Riff Raff and Columbia from the movie were in the original stage show; along with Dr Scott who was the narrator then. Little in the way of stage props other than the light, a tin tray for the thunder and a crome garden fork end as the laser. Magical

This movie means the world to me (In my personal top 10!) and I do feel like some of the greatness is lost in a culture of fans kind of making it the butt of jokes - I've been to a screening and I'm not entirely convinced people weren't laughing at its expense at times rather than along with it, for example. But it operates on two levels: One is the subversiveness. The straitlaced couple are the squares and the weird hypersexual aliens that hitherto would've been demonized in any other movie, are treated as the main event, the characters you watch this for. The ones the movie expects you to relate more to than Brad and Janet as they initially are. The other level is this movie loving the genres its borrows from to death. Few movies love their inspirations as much. They don't use the zaps and pew pews unironically, they know this is all very cheesy stuff 20 years out of date. But that's exactly the fun, they're not making fun of when movies used to do that, but *reveling* in it. The point of the movie I believe is neither to bask in absolute pleasure (Kind of the ruination of all the characters lol) nor to uphold traditional values (The very thing it mocks), but to indulge in feelings others tell you are wrong but don't in actuality hurt anybody. RHPS encourages you to come out of your shell if you feel that calling strongly, and no matter how much I wonder at its fans actually liking the movie itself rather than just the culture around it, it has done that almost 50 years now. This is more than just a film, it's a revolution. Changed my life. 🥲

It is the lure of going to a theater bringing a bag of props... eggs, toilet paper, lighters, squirt guns, rice... and throwing them, knowing what to yell during the film dressed as your favorite character in the film even acting out what is going on in the film in front of the screen. What you yell is ever changing... yell the wrong thing and people will chastise you for being a virgin. That is why it is so loved... you are part of it. Theater's are quiet places, but not at this film!

You mentioned a young Susan Sarandon. If you’ve seen That’s My Boy with Adam Sandler, the young woman playing his teacher at the beginning is Susan’s actual daughter, which is why there’s such a striking resemblance when Susan herself plays an older version of the character towards the end.

FUN FACTS: RHPS was initially produced as a tax write-off; it was adapted from alive stage show. It was later released as a Midnight showing, and became the longest running theatrical movie in cinematic history, with Midnight showings to this day; there is a little-known sequel called Shock Treatment.

This is really an outrageously fun movie all the way around. At 66 I saw this about 19y/o in a midnight showing, it was the most fun you could have (legally speaking) there was full audience partisapatence throughout the movie. which included rice thrown in the air, bread being tossed at the screen, water pistols being used in the air, audience yelling out in unison at different parts of the movie, lighters being used and everyone up out of their seats performing the Time warp dance. Then there was the one drunk guy who really didn't know so he would yell out random crap that never was suppose to be yelled by anyone. Then everyone favorite Transsexual from Transylvania. Tim Curry most excellent performance. All in all, I hope this movie never leaves and remains a top pick for cult followings.

Every Saturday night at midnight for years! I worked unofficially as security keeping the balcony clear. I didn't get any pay but it allowed me to get in the theater for free any time I wanted. For that theater that was better than any pay. Walking the eight blocks from the bus stop home around 3 or 4 Sunday mornings dressed as Janet in the men's dress shirt and half slip could be a bit torturous though.

I too saw this as part of a double bill (with slap shot) at a drive in - people were confused and a lot drove off in the middle of it... but I thought it was great. I went to a midnight showing in about 1978. do they still allow squirt guns and rice?

It was a huge thing to go every Saturday night to watch it. Extremely popular cult movie.had water guns to create rain during the rain seen. Rice to throw at the wedding scene. Everyone dressed up. We would all do the Time Warp. After we all cleaned up our mess. A time when we could laugh together.

Dude, the whole student sleeping with teachers was waaaay before Glee. Hell I recall early 2000's where one of my teachers was arrested for getting a student pregnant. Older stuff not only showed a lot more promiscuity and such for teenagers, but also RomComs from before the past 10 years, if viewed now would be creepy and fucked up. Stuff like stalking, Stockholm stuff, not taking no for an answer was all over RomCom movies before the last ten years. Try looking at any romance movie or such you were into in todays views and you will be shocked how creepy they all were. "You Got Mail" creepy. Ruin all your old faves.

The "accidental" nip slip you guys are talking about at 50:00 (the one in Columbia's shirt) -- not an accident lmao. Richard O'Brien (Riff Raff) asked Patricia Quinn (Magenta) when they were doing the audio commentary together if Little Nell (Columbia) knew about the nip slip, and Patricia confirmed that not only did Little Nell know, but she knew before hand. She either chose the shirt because of the rip or she cut the hole herself (I can't remember which one it was, it's been a long time since I've watched the movie with the audio commentary). Either way, she chose to pull down the shirt because she knew the hole was there and what would happen if she timed it right. It was her way of teasing the audience.
