One of the most ironic events in music history. A song that was a spoof and a parody of the fashion world, became iconic and played in every single catwalk, night club and party around the world. And Fred, who was making fun of the people who acted like they were too sexy, became a sex symbol himself.

This song was supposed to spoof arrogant, over-confident and egotistical people who thought they were hotter than everybody else in the room. It went over a LOT of people's heads back in the day, but I laughed every time I heard it. STILL incredibly catchy to this day and can still be heard in TV commercials today too.

The reason for the song was that Richard Fairbrass (the singer) and the other band members used to work out at a gym next to a modelling agency, and would often laugh at the pretentious models who came in and just admired themselves in the mirror.

@ballyastrocade56723 жыл бұрын
@@stevecarter8810 That happens a lot. :-) Electric Light Orchestra's "Don't Bring Me Down" was basically thrown together by Jeff Lynne at the last minute, too; the album ("Discovery") was running a bit short on side 2, and he felt like it needed one more song to fill it out, so he just banged it out in the studio practically overnight, no orchestration, just synthesizer and guitars and a drum loop recycled from an unused take of a different song -- and it became a huge hit for them. "Black Water" by The Doobie Brothers is another one -- no one, not even Patrick Simmons (who wrote it), expected much from it when they recorded it; it was just a thing he felt like doing and they put it on the album because, hey, why not? It ended up as the "B"-side of the single which they (and the record company) thought would be the hit song from the album... and the "A" side hardly got any airplay after the first week or two, while any time a DJ at one of the free-form AOR stations played the B-side they got buried with calls from listeners requesting to hear "Black Water" again and again, and the record company had to rush-produce a new 45 single with "Black Water" as the A-side to meet the demand. :-)

I can never hear this song without remembering my late Uncle, he was a good looking guy with a since of humor and I remember him liking and even singing this song when it came out. RIP to a great guy

This is the earliest I’ve ever commented! Happy New Year everybody. JayVee you were the best thing about 2020! This guy also was a featured player in the band in David Bowie’s Blue Jean video. Artist for next year...John Cougar Mellencamp.

Milan, New York and Tokyo, Japan are places with frequent fashion shows and also cities where fashion models often congregate. This guy is saying he is better looking than all the fashion models in all the big cities.

This song was great back in the day. Still is. It's the song that best describes me.

this was a light-hearted slam on the vapid personalities that propped-up "image-culture" such as modeling and society's emphasis on looks over substance -- by creating a song that was the same thing. Pretty brilliant as far as cultural-parodies goes.

The 90s had so many different types of music. EVERYTHING was up for grabs. Grunge, Alternate, Rap, Gangster Rap, R&B, Pop, Country, Metal, Boy Bands, Techno, Trance and some- like this, we have NO IDEA what the hell it is, but we really didn't care! This was when color, sex etc just didn't matter at all. You like it- you just rocked it!
