I watched a surreal folk horror film | The Vourdalak

The Vourdalak is a 2023 French horror film directed by Adrien Beau in his feature length debut, based on a novella by Aleksei Tolsoy. The Marquis Jacques Saturnin du Antoine is on a diplomatic expedition to eastern Europe for the King of France. He arrives in a Serbian village under constant attack by Turkish raiders. When he takes shelter with a family, they recount to him the strange circumstances of their patriarch Gorcha, who has left to fight the Turk's leader Alibek. Gorcha warned that if he had not returned after six days, he should be left for dead as he would suffer a terrible curse. After the sixth day, Gorcha returns, but is transformed into a terrible vourdalak (a vampire). He terrorizes the family and Jacques, who finds himself embroiled in an unholy familial conflict.

I've watched this twice, love the folk lore and how it takes you back in time to another world, the way it was filmed as if it was made in the 80s and there was a tragic love story hidden behind it all, it was dark yet romantic at the same time if that makes sense.....are there any other movies like this?

Dark and romantic folk horror, I'd go for Leptirica, Morgiana, Blancanieves, The Ghost of Yotsuya, The Mad Fox, Kwaidan (specifically The Snow Woman), House of Usher, The Tale of King Crab, I Walked with a Zombie

I really adore this movie. I thought it was funny when you said "Yeah, he brought all this with his pale a.." I love the Marquis and Sdenka. You should check out the Annie Lennox music vid to her song Walking on Broken Glass. I can just imagine the Marquis and Sdenka together at that type of soiree if things had gone very differently for those two!

I saw this at an Indie theater in Las Vegas, having watched the original film adaptation from Mario Bava’s Black Sabbath I was excited to see this interpretation. It’s not a perfect film, but the life size marionette was an interesting choice and I really enjoyed the performances of the actors. I’m hoping for a physical release.
