I Watched All of Naruto in a Month & Here's What I Thought | Naruto Retrospective

Hey I haven't made a video in a while so starting off with a rather ambitious and long project like this probably wasn't the best decision. I know there's plenty of things glossed over and many more aspects I can talk about but my focus was making a (somewhat) manageable video first while still leaving certain topics and characters for more concise standalone videos in the (very, very distant) future. On a technical level I apologize for the occasional weird artifacting in some of the Shippuden footage which I couldn't get rid of no matter which encoder or presets I used. There's also the occasional awkward cut in audio which is less of an oversight and more of a decision in editing to make this video not the 1hr+ length it was originally supposed to be. No clue what I want to work on next but I had a great time watching Naruto this summer and less of a great time scouring through 80+ hours of footage in editing. fillers in Naruto drag it down...a lot....its a great idea good story and amazing anime but kishi is sorta ass at writing the fans had too much involvement with how the series shifted based on popularity since pretty early on and the fillers and bad filler moments ruin what should be the equal of one piece but better cause it isn't the same rescue storyline over and over again so its even smarter but that's what it became sadly...

i loved hinata in the canon parts of the series and even mostly in fillers...did you watch naruto the last...its ironic how that film makes me like hinata less when its goal is the opposite..i mean its not much since I still find her adorable in the film too but I liked her less in that film then before due to the writing that seems to miss the point of her character kinda...I love the romance angle but shes not at her best in that film until the end when she saves naruto and the romance stuff after and sakura surprisingly is at her best while being in the background sorta...ironic imo...especially considering a lot of naruskau fans who are mostly sakura fans that just don't want her to be with sasuke didn't want to see a film based around a couple they don't support yet if they did watch the film they would support it cause its so sweet and they would like sakura even more...seeing her save everyone and fight is cool for once..this movie actually did that...sure they have to sneak in 2 scenes of her yearning for sasuke but hey what can you do..its who she is...loved the film for its subtley though..if you did watch it did you notice how naruto didn't open the gifts the other girls gave him for saving them as the hero for the festival as we see into his home when hes looking at his moms scarf and out the window all alone in darkness waiting for someone to give him a scarf like his mom aka what hinatas knitting at the same moment for him aka a gift that he can use but also from her heart...seeing naruto in shadow as it snows and he looks sad and hinata contrast that in light all smiles is such a great transition scene that I wish got more focus..its quick but brilliant and no dialogue is needed..again subtley is the films key...I love the callbacks to the scarf ..its always there and always shown in different ways from the start to the post credits.

Well itachi is the only one who fits the image of strong ANBU....that and kakashi. Anyway, from what i understand ANBU are not actually supposed to be strong, as much as they are able to execute orders without any complaint. Remember when Guy Sensei wanted to join the ANBU and Danzo told him that he IS strong enough , but he dose not have the darkness requied to serve? Allmost all ANBU members we know have no family left.(exept itachi, but........yeah)

I love how honest you are about your feelings for the series. A lot of people are embarrassed to say that they actually like Naruto, thinking that they’ll lose credibility of the people in the anime community that have “good” taste, not realizing that the series, while flawed, is actually very solid and definitely one of the better shounen anime out there.

Naruto is about ironically subtle feels and themes and people only like to look at it from a surface level of narratives sadly...stuff like sasuke and narutos bond is made fun of for being gay forced or a total yaoi ship all along and while not well established it does make sense why their bond matters to naruto when you remember sasuke risked dying for Naruto vs haku and didn't kill him in part 1 so to Naruto he isn't evil since hes done these things...he accepted him willing to share his food with him and made naruto happy knowing someone else had it off worse than himself.....it kept him striving cause he thought if my life isnt as bad as his then I can't sulk...Naruto has to save him to become hokage...these are things that go over peoples heads...the romance is meant to be subtle..people want it to be so obvious and boring like every other romance in shonnen???..why?...its not meant to be love at first sight for Naruto..its a gradual sign of growth for him to be with her and be attracted to who she is rather than her looks which is a big reason why their romance plays out like it did...they made it clear Naruto has to fall for who hinata has become and is not her looks

@@yonatanhoresh2695 I mean my point is looksis so generic a reason to like someone..whats inside should matter more...the show goes out of its way to make sure naruto and hinata don't love each other because of looks so it has to build that chemistry without forcing it slowly as the characters grow up cause if naruto curshed on her right away it loses all meaning making it all about looks..thats why the sakura crush naruto has in throw in there to be a red hearing to show naruto wants a destructive wrong girl who like someone else and if he did end up with her it would be so wrong on so many levels....the way every girl wants sasuke because of his looks or skills or both is not how the series wanted to portray the main romance....not once does hinata say naruto is hot or cute ...she never even thinks it...

as good as one piece hunter x hunter are and even jo jo in its own way and gintama, once you get to boruto i feel sorta empty that naruto is over...it really is one of a kind looking back...his character took the good parts of a hero and broke them down into the perfect entity to root for and while i don't love the sasuke character the story and finale of his character is very solid to contrast it showing two main characters basically and it just would of meant more if he was a more interesting or likeable relatable rational character which he is not but its fine cause his side of the story is necessary like when he sees naruto's memories and journey he has been on everything he felt and missed out on it just hits you like damn sasuke you could of been there for him through all that training and the invasion of pain and all that neji stuff and before when iruka saved him you had no idea about that i bet and you were not there for a friend like should of been...even in a story with 2 psuedo main characters sasuke is mostly used to contrast naruto and make him more heroic so in the end he too is a side character in this tale in the end as much as his fans like to lie to themselves and think he was separate from naruto and did his own thing in the end it all tied back to naruto so he too was apart of naruto's story ..naruto's story just had it all and made me more interested in its themes meanings morality dialogue emotional storytelling and symbolism more than the fights or basic plot setting or characters themselves which is rare.. ..his son has a less interesting story and it does not matter that one day he could have a intense cool storyline, hes not naruto hes not as engaging i don't want to follow his son in a series kishimoto does not have much involvement in ...i wish naruto continued post war even if it was more of a slice of life filler show ...its better than watching violence for violence sake in boruto between kids for no reason thats for sure...at least the naruto slice of life show would be about characters we watched grow and like unlike the boruto cast which does not have that saga to make them endearing...not saying suffering makes you endearing but it helps...

@Connor people are right that one piece is overall better written in many aspects I guess and more imaginative sorta and less cliche with its use of side characters but naruto is intimate like no other series..when you look back sasuke's perspective at the end is so real cause he was not there to see what naruto been through for him..see naruto only grew cause of his rivalry with sasuke..without that he could of halted but he didn't cause what kept him going was to surpass him and bring him back around in the end....it mist of been tough without having that rival next to him to keep pace with...from afar is not the same ....it just makes you care even if you are not a fan of team 7 which I was not..by the end you love that they got back together and in boruto i love seeing them 3...only kishi can do that..he subverted my expectations a lot and I am glad he did to tell his compelling narrative not what would sell better....if he did what all these fans comment say his series should be, it would be shit...he changed its direction killed off many characters made the end feel worthwhile...many other authors would of blown it....his ability not to do the cliche make your main characters likeable all the time like many authors do is unique and I never thought I would say it but I wish more series were written that way instead of the usually every main character is likeable trope that is common in shounen...its so boring...we get it they are all good..but then wheres the flaws the growth the mistakes?..kid naruto is flawed thats what makes him endearing hes stupid insensitive rude a perv weird spazzy an underdog semi ugly...sasuke is tormented and isolated and sakura is every flawed girl ever ..sorta spectrum cause theres not a main female for her to bounce off of like naruto has so she is sorta broadly written to represent all insecure girls with a semi rival in ino

the sasuke retrieval and konoha invasion arcs did as well ..shino lee kiba choji shikamaru neji naruto even garra all did their parts ....the issue is no females did anything in those arcs and shino kiba choji lee even neji all got forgotten about ...so now its just naruto garra and shikamaru with a tad bit of neji in the war and a moment of characterization for choji vs asuma i guess...like its so small...thats a problem...

What? The second series gave more insight to the Hokage, Danzo, Kabuto, Itachi, A LOT of villains, etc. The first part literally helped the Konoha 11 like this and that’s why people say this. Sorry the other Genin mostly didn’t get as much shine but Shippuden was awesome for most other characters

The problem with that idea is that it's not accurate. At the end of part 1, the only characters we understand are Naruto and Sasuke. At least of the recurring cast. Everyone we actually know is either dead or one of the two main characters. Whereas by the end of part 2, we have a pretty good idea who most of the key players in their entire world are as human beings. Including every single member of the cast of part 1, with the exception of Kurenai. Correct me if I'm wrong, but "only two" tends to be significantly lower than "all but one", yeah?

if you watch and pay attention to the story of naruto its narrative actually is way better than people give it credit for once jiraya's peace idea gets introduced and that sounds like the author putting himself into the story like thats what i want naruto to teach people to just let go of hate and want peace in the end so he used jiraya to be a surrogate for his own ideals using his platform...smart move using an action series to do this cause can kill people and show pain and make people realize through drawings how awful it all is...which you can't do otherwise.......it took awhile but it gets to its point eventually..you just have to sit through some garbage ...behind all its flaws is a great idea and theme...it just has a lot of extra crap that drags it down sadly...like certain characters and moments...ugh one of the very worst is when naruto says sakura is his gf to his dad like 6 chapters after neji died...makes you just feel like throwing up..totally uneeded joke there...and she hits him in the head like one does to the hope of the war a teammate a friend while surrounded by dead people..thats actually in the manga..smdh ..i hated that moment so much...it really is one of the worst moments timing wise by an author i have ever seen put to paper

Been watching naruto since when it first aired on toonami. I admit there are flaws in the story and the anime itself, but I believe it is still a solid one with amazing emotional themes. Some flaws are way worse than others though. Flashbacks that help understand a character are my favorite. You also absolutely cannot disagree that itachi’s plot twist was the biggest wtf moment ever

I love Naruto, but my complaints about Naruto were: 1- The lack of focus they gave to other jinchurikis 2- Ambu being so weak 3- Sasuke ending up with Sakura instead of Karin 4- Too many fillers focused on irrelevant characters 5 - And while I like Kaguya, WTF is she doing there? Really. It would have been better if the war had ended with Madara and not Kaguya. They removed all of Madara's weight and instead replaced him with a character we barely got to know. 5- Also, Gai shoud have died, nothing against him, but it could have more impact on Madara as an enemy I know my english is not great and some of the nanes are mispelled, but whatever I didn't even try xD

What I mean is that they still remained as side characters, while they should have been more than that. Or at least they made it seem as a big deal when the Naruto's story and lore was stablished at the beginning, which kept me wondering all the time "where the hell are the rest of them and why they don't get any screen time". When they finally did, it was disappointing.

It's crazy that I've known Naruto my life yet just started watching it this June 2020. Now I'm at 4th Shinobi War Arc. It even became my personal favorite anime ever. Though, I regret not watching it before, at least I did today and I am so happy that I started watching Naruto. So much sentimental it gives me. Never knew that someone who doesn't even exist gives you a lot of realizations in life. Sure, it has its flaws, but despite that, it's greatness overpowers it. This will always hold a special place in my heart until I grew up, dattebayo! :)

The Naruto series has a big place in many people's hearts here in Slovakia. It's one of the series that many of us grew up with and remember it as one of the more brutal TV shows here when it used to air on Jetix. My classmates also read the manga. I remember them talking about the Zabuza arc and the Battle on the bridge.

I think the reason you felt naruto had such a sudden shift between part 1 and shippuden is the anime. If you read the manga instead you find yourself seperating it between everything before the pain arc and everything after the pain arc lol

His new goal is given to him through jiraiya and nagato, which is to figure out how to rid the world of hatred and bring lasting peace instead. Which is good since Sasuke’s hatred mission intersects in a way with Naruto’s new goal, in that he must find how to rid the hatred in his friend first before he can do it for the entire world

so true. The pain saga was SO GOOD... And then literarily at the finish line, it tripped, broke it's neck, fell down a set of stairs, and then went over a cliff. I have never seen a moment that mangaed to take something so great, and then absolutely ruin it in a single chapter, but pain mass ressing everyone who died completely and totally destroyed any and all stakes the series had before that moment, and the series NEVER recovered from it.

its better than you think right?...i think its a little cliche early on and does lack a real purpose and message its just simple boy has dream and makes friends until then story but once you see kakashi's past and the jiraya vs pain itachi vs sasuke stuff you really get to see what the show is really about and through naruto we learn about so much from his lessons but thats when the story itself starts to teach us even without using naruto finally to do so ...it becomes more of a narrative morality story then just basic themes.....we learn throgh jiraya through pain through itachi through obito through sasuke through madara..its not just about naruto anymore ...other people matter too

sakura fans completely overrate her in the first shippuden arc and war and forget how useless she was to the plot outside of literally a few moments in 2 arcs...what does she do between beating sasori and summoning katsuya in the war vs the ten tails?..nothing...that is literally 340 episodes apart...and between part 1 and shippuden she went 220 or so eps doing nothing too...so that means for 660+ eps shes useless to the narrative..essentially...great

I dont hate Sakura, in fact I really want to like her but instead I only like the idea of her. Sakura represents most strongly an overarching problem in Kishimotos writing, one that doesnt apply exclusive to her. Every female in Naruto is shallow and one dimensional, yes, even everyone's favorite waifu Hinata to an extent. Sakura had the potential to be a brilliant character, and take the crown as best waifu, but Kishimoto failed to follow through on her character arc, not only leaving it unfinished but making blunders along the way both in part 1 & 2. Sakura should have evolved from a dislikeable, annoying little girl into a teen girl who realizes her shortcomings and works hard to become a better person, friend, and ninja, The Chunin Exams should have marked the beginning of Sakura's character development but instead marked to me, the end of Hinatas. Hinata unlike Sakura has meaningful character development early on. During the Chunin Exams Hinata takes on Neji and we see her progression from the academy until now. Hinata fills the cute, shy girl trope who idolizes the protagonist. But her background, determination, and ability to stand up for herself gives her character and depth. However, she doesn't change at all from this point on. Her next big moment in the series is during Shippuden when she fights Pein. She's gotten stronger sure, but shes still the exact same person. Then shes only used to hold Narutos hand and have his babies. Temari had a similar problem. In part one she was by far the most interesting female character. She had PERSONALITY and was a total badass. In part 2 she was Gaara's big sister, and maybe had a thing with Shikamaru. Konan was also a great character who was underutilized. Sakura on the other hand, while she has a similar moments during the Chunin Exam, defending unconscious Sasuke and Naruto, and her later fight with Ino accompanied by flashback, is only just beginning to understand that she need to work harder and become a better ninja. Now I personally like Sakura's arc during the chunin exam , its everything after that's the problem. Once she is disqualified she should immediately start training, of course Kakashi is off helping Sasuke completely ignoring his own students, but this would have been the perfect opportunity for her to show her own initiative, train by herself and offer to train with Naruto. She could have started working on Genjutsu, that thing shes suppose to be "a natural" at. but NEVER actually uses. There is a month until the 3rd round, and I assume at least another month or two covering the search for Tsunade, Land of Tea, and Sasuke Retrieval Mission. Instead any determination or motivation she had seems to be forgotten, and we're just suppose to believe she spends that time bringing Lee flowers! Once she starts training under Tsunade, it seems like we're finally going to see a change... And then we get Shippuden. Sakura in Shippuden has a great opener, her fight with Sasori and Chio is BADASS... And then. Nothing. Happens. She suddenly reverts back to being "useless". Everyone else is getting character moments, development, minor power ups, but not Sakura. She doesn't do anything unti the War Arc, when she unlocks the Strength of a Hundred. Which she uses. To do. Nothing. Sakura, ie: the most wasted potential of any character in Naruto.

Neji did talk a lot about his philosophy, that being that some people are great and some are destined for mediocrity. Every power Naruto ever used bar one was something he inherited as a birthright or was given to him. Rasengan was his dad's, he never would've been taught it if he wasn't the fourths son. The nine tails was given to him, he never would have had it if he wasn't born Uzumaki. His Senjutsu came from the toads who never would've looked at him twice if he wasn't literally a child of prophecy or his father's son. His nine tails cloak was given to him by his Uzumaki heritage and is not his own power. His sage of six paths power is because he's a literal reincarnation if a demigod. The only power he earned himself was shadow clone. And at the beginning everybody was claiming he was an underdog but at the same time saying he has more chakra than Hokage then how can he be an underdog . Naruto was just lonely, that is it, that is his trauma and the repeated flashbacks how everybody ignored him and his sad swing didn't make me sympathise it just annoyed me even more,boo hoo it made it seem like he was the only orphan in the whole ninja world and that his childhood is the worst but it isn't close.

I agree with you on almost everything, very great yet conflicting series. On one hand, an extremely enjoyable journey, it is one of the best action series of all time period, with a very unique and interesting story, and amazing and deep plot. On the other hand, it is a flawed series filled to the brim with plot holes, lazy plot devices, messy lore, and at some points straight up bad storytelling (especially 2nd half shippuden). However, the good outweighs the bad, i love this series so much and it has a very special place in my heart.

Naruto will probably always be my favorite anime, even though I think it falls apart in the war arc. I was following it since Asuma's death every week. The lore and morality is what makes it, along with good fights (for the most part). Despite how relatively simple the moral delimas were, I still made me think for a while. I could see how a good person could give in and grow jaded like Nagato. I could see how Itachi could make such an unfair sacrifice for country. I could even understand Sasuke's plan on the end. I was furious when Naruto said "I don't know" to Pain, but it helped me think about if I am too quick to dismiss other viewpoints. It probably wasn't that deep for a lot of people, but I was at the age where I was still figuring out who I was and it will always have that place. I was reading Bleach and One Piece at the time, but they weren't even close until the whole Ace situation. The only other anime that really connected with me at that age was Gurren Lagann and FLCL. PS: I don't watch Boruto and Kaguya was a disastrous last villain in my opinion, but the reverse harem jutsu was tight. There are a massive amount of reasons I can see why people don't like it, but if you think Naruto is trash, you probably weren't looking for a therapy action ninja/mecha ballad with occasional angry women and perv jokes. If you didn't get invested for one reason or another, that's fine. But I think some of you look rediculous when you have to be edgy and claim your anime pallet is so much more refined than others. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Justin Beiber was a phenomenon that a lot of people hated, but one of his low effort songs may have shaped someone into a better person...maybe? I hope not, but you know...art and storytelling will never agree. Some people have very specific taste while others just appreciate that its there.

It isn't that it is hard to understand, it is that it completely ruined the story that was originally being told. Originally Naruto was all about the fact that there was no inescapable fate determined by destiny that you couldn't get out of. It was the story about how even a kid who was completely ostracized and hated by his community and considered weak and useless by his own peers and classmates could eventually become the most loved, respected and powerful member of said community through nothing more than that kids own determination and grit. Then comes along the ret-conned to hell idea that Naruto and Sasuke are reincarnations of literal Christ figures and were destined to be that strong and battle it out. Just like Hashirama and Madara before them. Yes they were destined to be that strong. The old sage toad had a prophetic vision that a pupil of Jiraiya would change the world. How are you going to change the shinobi world without gaining immense strength? Not trying to start something and not saying that I hate the show(I've watched it three times now. Lol). Just my two cents.

The idea of an inescapable destiny literally means you can sit and eat icecream your entire life and what’s gonna happen is gonna happen, no matter what and that’s not the show we saw. All reincarnates weren’t strong, most were inconsequential during 1000 years. Only those 4 became strong and they mostly work hard (except Sasuke 😏) to get that strong.

It's pretty to know that people started watching Naruto only after it had ended. Most of us having watched Naruto, we grew up with it, the subs, the dubs, the Manga, waiting for each new chapter, but being let on a cliffhanger each week, Kishimoto being the biggest troll in the whole Manga community, characters that are dead in one episode being alive in the other etc.

part 1 is still solid...minus fillers...shippuden is so bad until like the asuma death..its embarassing how bad it is for so long..and even after that initial couple episode reaction to his death its not great until what episode 119 when obito's flashback is shown and then sasuke fights deidara and we get jiraya and itachi's arcs come to an end...and then pain's invasion...yeah thats when shippuden got good then its bad again outside of sasuke vs danzo until like mid way into the war....chiyo's death is sad and i like her fight at times with sasori though i will say even during the best arcs of shippuden aka that range of eps 119-141 and 152-169 and 172-175 theres some bad material in there too like when the gang fights tobi in the forrest its so awkward and boring...and sai's background is sad but it was executed horribly his storyline thus is incomplete and never fully explored either

Id like to say that, as a person who also binged through the entire series, that watching a show as it progresses through time instead of all at once is very different. This show spanned 15 years and it would have been a much different experience if I would have grown up waiting to watch the next episode instead of watching like 10 in one day. I think what happened with Shippuden is that you skipped a lot of the filler. Filler in Shippuden is usually plot adjacent (childhood and Paradise on a Boat aside) and it gives a lot of the side characters like Rock Lee time to shine.

lets be honest though without jiraya itachi orochimaru zabuza pain madara obito garra the story would of felt a bit boring...those characters helped naruto become legendary...i like sasuke naruto lee shikamaru hiruzen tsunade kakashi bee but those characters plus the annoying sakura are not carrying a boring show....the villains really helped boost the series and then the twists with jiraya's storyline and itachi and their character's true purposes changed the themes of the series

I'm not really a big anime person, but when Naruto was out I was in my early teens I would take my little sister to a friend of hers a lot, and the little brother basically had nothing to do at these events, so I would watch Naruto with him since that was something he was really in to (I was basically the "cool older kid" so he loved it). So I watched the first part (I guess pre-Shippuden?) and I enjoyed it, what I liked most was everyone had strange unique powers like they were mages and not ninjas (though come to find out that was the original idea). Later on I actually went back to watch the sequel out of curiosity, but I was actually really disappointed it felt completely different, it reminded me sort of like DBZ later with everyone throwing mega-death energy balls at each other, which I guess is fine for DBZ since that's kind of how it's always been, but Naruto didn't start that way. It also felt like the world building was thrown out the window too. I kind of lost interest and just read a summery of the rest of the story, so I'm not sure if it got a lot better.

Naruto is still probably my favorite shonen. I know it drags a bit in Shippuden with Kishimoto stretching out the manga longer than he wanted at the request of his editor, and a lot of the powerups at the end stem from the fact that he accidentally wrote himself into a corner with making Madara too strong. I agree with many people that the flashbacks are a bit much but I disagree with the people that say you should skip "filler" content, so much of the filler is actually really good and develops the world, characters, and story. My favorite thing with Naruto is following the characters from kids and seeing Naruto grow up to start a family and become Hokage filled me with a sense of nostalgia and pride for this fictional character achieving his goal after following the series since the early 2000s. I even really love the Boruto manga/anime and being able to see how the world has changed because of the events of Naruto.

Naruto was my first anime so it always lands on top of my all time lists if for nothing else but being OG for me. Used to hunt down the manga when i first saw a kid with it in class back in 1st grade . I stole one after i was sure the kid had finished it and it happened to be the first volume. Great story, and say what you want about the show i think if nothing else it taught a lot of people not to give up .

17:20 ... hit the nail right on the head there chief .... the first part is more realistic with heavy undertones the greates fights ever ( gaara vs Lee is in top 3 in almost every list .. top 5 at worst ) great character moments and even greater development not to mention everyone gets respected as a character one way or another etc etc ... shippuden had so very few of this man ... shippuden became basicaly a brawl fest 80% of times and very moments were given the proper respect ... after the pain arc things got downhil with the ocasional good but omg nothing could have prepared me for a alien rabit woman
