To clarfiy what I mean in terms of LOTR being a "sleeper" franchise. I'm simply implying that because of studios like Star Wars and Marvel coming out with new movies and news basically every week/month, it's diluted other fracnhsies of massive scale to the background a bit. Even if the press is negative, SW and Marvel (at least made me) forget just how MASSIVE Lotr fanbase is as a newcomer to them... In the meantime, tea is at 4 P.M. you don't need to knock, anyone is welcome :)

(Movie) Aragorn isn't remotely stern. That's partially why he's peak positive masculinity. Elrond is stern. Aragorn easily and openly laughs, cries, and empathizes. Basically all of the Fellowship are positive role models, and all of them embody different virtues. Sam represents the ideal friend, and Aragorn represents the ideal leader. Gandalf is wisdom, Boromir is redemption, Pippin is curiosity, Merry is passion, Legolas is strength and Gimli is resilience.

Frodo and Sam are depicted as more attached to each other than any other companion pair in the book, and by a LOT. I completely understand people reading about Sam weeping and stroking Frodo's hand while he recovers in the Last Homely House or Sam living a prototypical straight life before leaving at the end of his days to rejoin his Old Roommate as a form lustless love when the only intended romance in the story (Aragorn and Arwen) is stunted yearning. Some of that stuff would be called queerbaiting today.

Theoden's last ride as an ultimate sacrifice is narratively undercut by the the zerg rush from the Dead. He and the Riders of Rohan would have been better off if they had just arrived a few hours later. The Dead don't (can't) do this in the book so Theoden's sacrifice is more impactful.

If you think each individual film is long, I went to the cinema to watch a 12 hour straight showing of all three LOTR movies extended editions back to back. Probably both the stupidest and best thing ive ever done, but it really adds something else to watching the series - you are engaged all the way through. Highly recomend!

I completely agree that the romance between Kili and Tauriel was just horrible and made no sense. What I think should have happened is that the romance should have been between Legolas and Tauriel, but have Tauriel die which then leads to Legolas leaving and setting it up for him to join the fellowship. I also just say this because I've always felt bad for Legolas's character, his mom dies when he's young, his dad doesn't really care about him, he can't get with the girl he likes, and he's basically a background character in the OG series with only a few cool fighting scenes and dialogue between him and Aragorn or Gimli.

What I'm really happy about as a Tolkien scholar is that in spite of modern fashion of sympathetic villains, you got exactly how this Dark Lord force of nature works, and how lesser villains (the Nazgul, Shelob, Gollum and primarily Saruman for the first two movies) complement the presence of Sauron. Reading the books, you'll see that's also how the protagonists work - the hobbits serve as a reader stand in and main characters of the story, while other heroes represent various archetypes, often very complex, but with less character development. Well, waiting for follow up video about books...

Nothing will ever beat the original trilogy, I just finished watching the extended ROTK last night after not having seen it in a decade or so. Those movies meant everything to me when I was a teenager. And The Hobbit films aren't NEARLY as bad as some people claim them to be, especially when you consider the tumultous circumstances and the stress Peter was under while making them. He was thrown in at the absolute last moment to try and steer the ship as it was barrelling down the river. It's a miracle they're as decent as they ended up being, despite a few goofy moments here and there. That silly Tauriel/Kili romance is absolutely the product of studio interference.

I agree with your ranking, and don't think the Hobbit was as good as LOTR, mostly because Jackson added a bunch of (unnecessary?) story. Legolas was not in the book The Hobbit, nor was Tauriel and there was no love triangle with Kili. Azog was already dead at the time of The Hobbit, and Bolg did not chase the dwarves from the Woodland Relam to Laketown, he led the goblin army from Gudebad upon rumors of the dwarves returning to Erebor and Samug being killed. Smaug did not battle Thorin & company in the mountain before flying off to destroy Laketown. Bilbo entered alone through the secret door, grabbed a golden chalice at the very edge of the hoard and went back to show he had found the treasure. The dwarves congratulate him, and when he went back in Smaug awoke, realized a thief was their and he was missing the cup, and when Bilbo tried to be clever with all his fancy title, Smaug took barrel rider to reference Laketown, and flew off then to burn the city and was killed. Thorin did not die at Azog's hand, and he, Kili, & Fili were killed in the battle outside the gates of Erebor, ending Thror's line and allowing Dain to become king. Finally, Legolas did not leave his father's realm over Tauriel. Aragorn had captured Gollum after he was released from Mordor and took him to the Woodland realm to be kept in captivity, but the elves after finding him to be largely helpless and of no consequence turned him loose, and Legolas as sent to Rivendel to tell Elrond what had occurred, joining the Fellowship then to represent the elves in the quest to destroy the one ring. We can argue that Jackson's blasphemy at so altering Tolkien's work added to the drama and cinematic quality of the film, but it was all added to what was already a very good story.

For the Hobbit Movies its also important to say that the Production was a desaster. I mean GDT was planned to direct those movies, not Peter Jackson, but after MGM couldnt get their shit togheter GTD left and then Peter Jackson took over and also didnt had that much time to make the Movies. The decision to include some "Movie Only Characters", as much as I like Legolas and Orlando Bloom, was just a Bad Idea from the beginning. But the worst Idea was the decision to make 3 Movies, even though at the beginning only 2 Movies where planned. And yeah, that Story in 2 Movies would be Perfect and they wouldnt had the need to come up with some useless Storylines (Tauriel/Kili) . But the whole Production Chaos of The Hobbit Movies shows how much luck we had that we got such an amazing trilogie 25 Years ago. And that those Films are one of a Kind, we wont get anything similar anytime soon. Well except for the Dune Movies maybe.

Guillermo was the main director of The Hobbit movies and spent years working on it but the studio kept putting him in limbo not allowing him to start filming which frustrated him to a point he left the project, he got replaced by Peter Jackson who got three months to carry out all of Guillermo's planning. For context Peter Jackson was given numerous years in the planning of LOTR and here he was more or less forced to use whatever Guillermo's vision was or use CGI to change it.

@@joramsim I prefer the extended editions myself (except for "Battle of the Five Armies"), but Peter Jackson has said that the theatrical versions are actually his director's cuts, but that he created the extended editions so people could have a more in-depth version to watch at home. Occasionally he'll say that he wishes he had kept a particular scene in the theatrical version (the one that springs to mind is the scene at the Green Dragon in FotR, which IMO improves the pacing of the first part of that movie in such a way that it makes it feel shorter rather than longer), but for the most part the theatrical cuts are the ones he's happy with.

the only problem I have with the first trilogy is how they changed the battle of Minas Tirith, it was a combined effort of all of the men of the west and Aragorn uniting them like the gigachad he is, instead they stole it with ghosts, like if 0 freaking men showed up they would still won, because the ghosts masacred everything. Not in the books baby, the ghost only caused fear in Pelargrir?, allowing the men to form up and win, then sail on Minas Tirith. Imo thats much more epic on showing bravery of men as whole and Aragorns character

Great video. Also small thing at 12:48. That wasn't just a black rider aka Nazgul. That was the Witch-king of Angmar the chief of the Nazgul and Sauron's great captain in his wars. The most powerful black rider and the one that stabbed Frodo nearly turning him into a wraith. Needless to say she was her and stroke a pivotal blow against Sauron.

I think it's really interesting seeing your perspective on the hobbit and lotr, how you see the hobbit as a prequel. I can't remember which ones I saw first, but it's weird to think that the hobbit came out over a decade earlier, and the lotr books was a sequel trilogy to just one book. I think if one watched the hobbit movies first, then lotr the hobbit would look rosier, as lotr would be the one reintroducing and expanding on characters rather than the hobbit. Its the grand daddy of high fantasy. Without it, Game of Thrones, Harry potter, and many many others WOULD NOT EXIST! its a classic good vs evil franchise. as for rings of power.. its okay to watch.I always warn people to dont put too much hate in a new iteration because if it DOESN'T DO WELL, it doesn't encourage other studios to give it a shot. and even if it kinda sucks rings of power is still a good watch and entertaining.. i had no issues watching it despite its flaws.. It was great to learn about the orcs, see Numenor etc.

I really disliked the rings of power and thought it was really bad. But I am still thankful for its existence for this exact reason. I hope it accomplishes the same thing the Disney Star Wars sequels do, even if they are not good it reignites peoples passion to see good content from that universe again and leads too the creation of so much more. I don’t think rings of power has to be received well to encourage others to make more, I think the shows existence in itself is enough to get people wanting more good lord of the rings. We have already seen new projects like war of the rohirrim coming out so that’s what I’m hoping is next for the lord of the rings.

I would highly recommend the Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War Games. They're not canon, but in their own seperate timeline they fit in between The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings and are amazing games

I recently watched the third movie in theaters for the first time. I’d seen it several times, long-term fan, but missed the movie releases. Man was it worth the movie ticket. The big screen did so many good things for it. Watching Gandalf ride out to save the soldiers fleeing the Nazgul from Osgiliath actually felt like you were there riding behind Gandalf. It was a thrilling experience. Great reviews brother! Agreed all the way bar a couple minor details maybe. Definitely agree on Rings of bleh though. 😂

I got to see all 3 of them in theaters again during the recent re-release and it was like getting teleported back in time 20+ years and experiencing it as a little kid for the first time again. I will absolutely take every chance I get to see it in theaters again any time it comes back. 11/10 experience.

well... Sauron's will, his escence, his evil prescence is tied to the One Ring, so technically Sauron is still the Main Villain and he is always there, lurking like an unseen but omnipresent force of nature. That is one of the things that makes Sauron one of, if not THE BEST villain ever.

The Ring is the ever present antagonist. Constantly trying (and often succeeding...for a time at least) to twist and corrupt the "good guys". While it's not a perfect comparison, I like to think of it kind of like Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader. The Emperor is Sauron,, the ever present and ominous threat that doesn't show itself very often before the finale. The Ring is Darth Vader, the constant threat that is always trying to corrupt the "hero" ( or "heroes" as the case may be).

The Hobbit in book form actually came before the Lord of the Rings. And was written more light hearted compared to the later Lord of the Rings. Hobbit films are honestly kinda stretched and forced when it came from one book that shorter than any one if the original trilogy. Could have finished it one maybe two movies

You're missing three films, films that have been made several years before that Lord of the rings trilogy. And total there's four Hobbit movies and five Lord of the rings movies. The first three movies made are animated. The animated Hobbit I think is better than the live action hobbits. The animated Hobbit for example has the eagles talking to our heroes. Which is perhaps one of my favorite scenes ever in all these movies.

The honour of friendship, kindness, good vs evil and that even the smallest of people can make a difference. The problem with RoP is that it's not holding any of these values and doesn't understand what they can change and what they can't. Peter Jackson understood the principle behind Tolkien's work and tried to honour it with his first trilogy. Amazon unfortunately understands just money and ticking inclusivity and politics boxes. They simply made a show that has absolutely nothing in common with the source, except of the names.

I’m glad that you were able to appreciate the Hobbit trilogy despite some of its flaws. I grew up watching those 3 in theaters and it was really my intro to Middle Earth, so I’ll always be really nostalgic for them, even if LOTR is better. Every 1-2 years I rewatch all six from AUJ to ROTK, and it’s just a fun, epic, emotional rollercoaster every time. But yeah we don’t talk about Rings of Power 😅

Its probably worth noting that The Hobbit book was written before the LOTR books. Meaning, that alot of "fanservice" was just how it was written. The Hobbit was also originally one book, which is why The Battle of Five armies was short and Smaug died early.

No. Legolas was not in the book. The necromancer was not in the book. The white council was only mentioned (meaning we didn’t meet Saruman or Galadriel). The book was written with children in mind. There was action. But Bilbo hit his head in the beginning of the battle of five armies. Then he is retold what happened in the next chapter. The book didn’t need three movies. One could have been enough. Two could have worked. But the final movie has pretty much nothing from the book.

The Hobbit, i.e. There and Back Again, was written by Bilbo and he delighted in telling his stories to children so the story has a more fanciful point of view. The Lord of the Rings was written by Frodo who was more serious than his uncle. He recorded his story for posterity but the Ring forever altered him both physically and psychologically more so than it did Bilbo. Frodo did not enjoy retelling his tale and the story itself reflects his more adult point of view.

I finally got around to watching these series.. and HOLY SHIT guys. I sat through the first lotr movie, and then for the rest of the day and the next one I watched all 6 films. So compelling with the action and storytelling. I must say also, great editing Dylan and this is a well worded review of the series. I saw all of these films in theater (numerous times for the original trilogy). I was 10 years old in 2001 when The Fellowship came out, and remember being so excited because my dad loved the books, and read The Hobbit to my brother and I when we were younger. I remember him telling us about the books, and being so fascinated. Seeing The Fellowship for the first time was beyond all expectations. These films are meant to be seen in the theater. I still think it may be my favorite movie experience of all time, and I have been obsessed with LOTR ever since. I agree with your picks. The original trilogy is perfect, but the Fellowship barely edges it out for me as my favorite. I enjoyed the Hobbit movies, but they are not on the same level as LOTR. Very happy that you also found, and enjoyed these films.

When your discussing the Hobbit, I feel like you don’t realize that the Lord of The Rings, and the Hobbit are books, adopted into movies, the original book for the Hobbit, was a book, not a 3 movie series. For some context, JRR Tolkien wrote the Hobbit before he wrote Lord of The Rings, and it was meant as a children’s book, where as the lord of the rings was much more mature. That’s why in the hobbit you have scenes like the trolls, where they are clearly there to be more comedic rather than an actual threat. Another important thing, is that the Orc guy, Azor whatever his name was, did not exist in the books, nor did the Elf guard who fell in love with the dwarf, or alot of other things. The film makers really embellished a lot to add more screen time. The main antagonists of the hobbit was smog in the books, but also, the necromaner, which, tho not explained in the movies, was Sauron. A lot of the lore of middle earth is realy interesting and sadly missed tho understandably missed in the movies. I would suggest reading the books to start, starting with the hobbit, which is super short, and if you like tolkiens writing, then get to enjoy the massive series that is lord of the rings. If you enjoy that then there are countless theories, online discussions etc, not mention the silmilirian (book that goes over the first age of middle earth as goes in depth on the gods and elves). There is a lot of lore to discover if you’re interested.

Once you read the 100 book page that they were made after you realize that peter jackson screwed up massively with them. i am a hardcore Tolkien fan and have read both LOTR an Hobbit more times than i would care to admit and the comparisson between how the original trilogy remained very close to the book vs how the prequels added most of the caracters and changed the story completely is just a disspoinment and an insult to Tolkien's works... And im not gonna talk about ROP because KZbin has a caracter limit for comments...
