Why is Pudge the fish important? Because of this, Lilo has come to the conclusion that Pudge the fish controls the weather-as he is a fish in water and rain comes from the water- and gives him peanut butter sandwiches so no other kid has to go through what she did. She is coping with the loss of her dead parents. And this is her only way of being able to express her feelings about this. I read somewhere on Disney facts sideline that explained that she blames herself because on the day she didn't feed him a sandwich, the storm happened, and her parents died. So, this is why she thinks Pudge the fish controls the weather and it's a sad tale yes. But she has a lot to deal with being a 7-year-old who's being raised by a teenage sister. Lilo is also heavily damaged herself. She suffers from abandoned child syndrome which is a common illness among children who have lost their parents. She also has a behavioral disorder called intermittent explosive disorder in which she often has outbursts of anger and usually takes it out on her classmates violently. I wanted to share this with you.

And to add to it, if you look at the scene in Nani’s room, you can see memorabilia of her competitive surfing days, which she had to put aside to take care of Lilo. And to add even more to it, that song she sings to Lilo, from what I understand, is the song the last queen of Hawai’i sang to her people before the land got taken away. 💔💔

There’s actually a deleted scene that gives more context to the strange photos Lilo takes of tourists. Basically, it shows white tourists treating Lilo like something to be gawked at and talked down to and to take photos of without her consent, a curiosity for being a native Hawaiian, just another part of their tropical vacation experience rather than a person. So she gets back at them and asserts her agency by messing with rude tourists and treating them with the same sort of dehumanizing attitude they treat her, including taking pictures of them like they’re something to be gawked at.

19:14 Nani isn't playing hard-to-get, she's 19 and she's raising her sister. She gave up a really promising career in professional surfing to get a full-time job and raise Lilo once their parents died. (You can see trophies, ribbons, etc. for her surfing in her room at 22:25. It wasn't shown in the clips, but Nani also has a Mulan poster above her bed, an easter egg to the previous Disney movie.) She doesn't have a lot of time, emotional bandwidth, and mental space to ALSO have a boyfriend. BUT, as many people have said, David Kawena is one of the BEST, underrated Disney Princes/Disney men out there, and he really deserves credit for supporting Nani and for treating Lilo like a little sister, even when he and Nani aren't together romantically.

17:25 It's not exactly because the creators liked Elvis, it's because in Hawaii, Elvis is a major icon because he sang a very popular cover of "Aloha 'Oe," which means "Farewell to Thee," a song written by the last reigning monarch of Hawaii. Her name was Queen Liliuokalani (Lilo and Nani's names are based on hers) and she wrote the song to say goodbye to the kingdom of Hawaii during her exile, shortly after the US acquired it as a territory and later as one of the States. Nani sings the song later in the movie the night before Lilo is to be taken away by Cobra Bubbles.

I think the reason they had social services checking on them is because Nani is only 18/19 and lilo is 6. They needed to make sure lilo would be provided and cared for. Nani probably got out of high school just recently and had a job for what little expenses and things she’d want to buy for herself, since she was still living with their parents. Imagine having to all a sudden take on all of the house and food expenses and taking care of a really young kid on your own. Great reaction.
@SnowyWolborg
@SnowyWolborg Жыл бұрын
Exactly. It's really only by the grace of god that Lilo is so intelligent and independent at such a young age that she is able to generally care for herself. Nani just doesn't have the time or the resources to be there for Lilo all day. And this is something that a lot of people who've had to grow up fast can relate to.
@Skittl1321
@Skittl1321 Жыл бұрын
Billy doesn't seem to understand that social services really exists like that. It absolutely is that guy's job to determine Lilo is in a safe appropriate environment, and it really is his job to take her away. And as horribly sad as it is, Nani isn't providing for her the way that is required, so Lilo would be taken based on what we are seeing.

There's a decent fan theory that I like a whole lot that Lilo is autistic. A lot of her behaviors fit, from having a special interest (Elvis) to not always understanding something until it's happening (being taken away from Nani). Also, autistic or no, she's the character who acts most like a real kid in any Disney movie. There's also something about the end of the movie that only really struck me right now, which is that the end shows the difference between just monitoring a situation like Nani and Lilo's and then taking a decisive action to split siblings apart... and what can happen when the older sibling is actually *helped* by the system instead of judged by it. When Mr. Bubbles actually started helping and supporting the family, when Nani got help from other people, she was able to do what she couldn't on her own. This movie was criminally underrated when it first came out. I'm glad it's started getting more love.

I hated Bubbles when I watched this as a kid. Now, I can understand why he was going to take Lilo. It's his job to determine if Nani was capable of taking care of her. Nani was only 19, barely an adult herself. She was having a hard time coping with the loss of her parents while becoming a parent. It's obvious she was barely keeping everything from falling apart. After that call from Lilo, he came to find her alone and the house destroyed. What options did Bubbles have? She didn't even have a home anymore, so leaving her there would be irresponsible.

Honestly it is unbelievable how real they managed to make this extremely mature theme. A young girl who lost her parents, her guiding figures, who tends to lash out and be quick to anger because she cannot understand, cannot comprehend the grief inside of her. And Nani. Imagine, you have just reahced adulthood, you think about moving out, going to college, starting your own life. And in one instant, the people who have guided you all this way are gone and you are given the enormous responsibilty to not only deal with your own grief, but to care for a child, find a job, keep a steady household. Nani was practically made a single mom at the ripe old age of _18_ with the responsibilty to care for a traumtized 6 year old. And while Bubba is kind of portrayed as a good person, this kind of "assistance" is clearly not helping anyone. What Nani needs is financial assistance, money to pay a Babysitter so that she _can_ go out and get a job, or take College classes, so that in the long run, she is _actually_ able to take care of Lilo. What she and Lilo do _not_ need is for Lilo to go into the System, maybe get taken entierly away to a different family, with her sister barely and rarley able to see her.

What i love about the movie is the conversation with Lilo talking to Stitch about her parents, him crying at night, and knows that's why he wrecks things and pushes her. Because that's why she is aggressive and does the same to her sister. And how she remembers everyone who leaves. It's so subtle, yet so well written. And how Bubbles became a part of the family. It explains why he was ghosting them so much. He cared about them and wanted to do what's best for them. Of course, all the comments talking about Pudge the fish. Can't forget about them visiting Graceland! 😅

Boyfriend. Surfing career. (She was a good surfer, she has trophies in her room) Or whatever else, all just to struggle through thankless and deadend jobs to raise her younger sister. Just so Lilo doesn't end up lost in the foster system and lose her only family left.

Nani and Lilo singing *Aloha 'Oe* always makes me cry. Disney movies fridge the parents so often, but they're right about siblings becoming so much more important when that relationship goes early. Hearing that the last monarch of Hawaii (Queen Lili'uokalani) wrote it in farewell to her kingdom as she was being forced to capitulate to demands from US colonization makes it that much more poignant.

8:24 Lilo believes Pudge the fish controls the weather because on the day she forgot to bring him a peanut butter sandwich, there was a rainstorm. Her parents went driving in the evening during the storm, got into an accident, and sadly passed away. This is a heartbreaking part of Lilo's story because her coping mechanism is to think the weather-related accident was her fault because of a simple ritual (giving a fish a sandwich) she forgot to do ONCE. And now she's taken it upon herself to never forget to feed Pudge again because she's afraid that if she does, someone else will lose a family member to a weather-related accident. 13:34 Another coping mechanism Lilo has is to take all these pictures. It's not because they're overweight, it's because they're tourists. In a deleted scene that was partially-animated, multiple tourists would make racist remarks to Lilo because she's a native Hawaiian, asking her if she spoke English and where the beach was. (It's an island... literally drive in ANY direction and you'll find a beach. SMH.) She found out the new tsunami sirens were being tested that day, so her retaliation to the racism was to shout on the beach to all the tourists there that if they heard the sirens, they needed to run to higher ground. Seconds later, the sirens went off, resulting in a panic. This scene was mostly discarded from the movie, but the footage of everyone running was repurposed later in the movie for the scene where Stitch plays Elvis on the beach and then loses control of himself. You can still find the original scene on KZbin.

When I tell you this movie helped me SO much when I was s weird little girl growing up in a small minded town... I felt so seen lol. But that one scene always sticks with me, the one where Lilo is telling Stitch what happened to her family and how she recognizes his pain. She said something that was so impactful for me even as a child "I know that's why you wreck things and push me." That really helped me understand why I sometimes came across "problem" children. It wasn't just that they were deciding to be mean out of nowhere, something must have happened to make them that way, and they could be in pain themselves. It really helped me to not internalize a lot of the mistreatment I faced from some of my peers.

The reason Cobra watches Nani and Lilo is because Nani is still only a teenager who’s parents death, fact that she has likely given up going to college and most of her social life, and now has to act as a mom to her sister. All those changes are just as hard in her than Lilo, and people can react differently to those changes, for better or worse. He needs to be sure she’s up to the task, and can also overcome her sister mentality and dynamic to be able to raise Lilo like a parent. She’s basically being forced to grow up quicker than expected. Lilo even shows lots of behaviors and interest that aren’t typical for little girls, so he probably has concerns there, like seeing her try voodoo. Also every time he shows up, something wrong is going on to where when he comes to get Lilo, the house is in flames. Really what would anyone think at that point. He’s tough on Nani because he needs to be to emphasize that raising a child is a lot of work, but he doesn’t want her to fail. When he thinks he needs to take Lilo, he’s genuinely apologetic and acknowledges Nani is trying, but feels she’s struggling. It’s clear he doesn’t want to, but feels he needs to. He gives her chances. It’s a case of him just doing his job and nothing more.

Lilo's entire speech of: "Our family's little now, and we don't have many toys. But if you want, you could be part of it. You could be our baby, and we'd raise you to be good. 'Ohana' means family. 'Family' means nobody gets left behind. But if you want to leave, you can. I'll remember you, though. I remember everyone that leaves."? Makes me cry my eyes out every damn time, and I have seen the film...MANY times.

I love this movie so much. The new intro is awesome and fits you so well. Fun fact: The actor that voiced the scientist has voiced a lot of Disney characters. He’s voiced Cogsworth (Beauty and the Beast), Governor Ratcliffe and Wiggins (Pocahontas), Archdeacon (The Hunchback of Notre Dame), and Fenton Q. Harcourt (Atlantis). He also played Charles Emerson Winchester III (a surgeon at a mash in the Korean War) on the show M*A*S*H* .

Somethin cool I noticed about the family photo at the end of the movie: The space for Stitch's spot in that photo is made partially from some of his own destruction, and an extra bit that his family cut out for him. He burned his way into their lives, and they made space for him.

OMG, I forgot how good this movie was. It has such a great theme that family and friends are forever. and it's about accepting. To me people should be accepting regardless because everyone is born differently. So? Who cares if someone is a different ethnicity, or if someone is born with a disability, or if they are an alien dog. That doesn't matter, what matters is what they are on the inside as much as the outside. Don't judge a book by its cover. I wish I had Stitch as a pet(the cutest thing ever) And this movie came out 2 years before I was born lol. Great reactions like always Billy!

It cracks me up that you watched the updated version where Lilo hid in some table with a pizza box instead of a dryer. In the closing credits you can see its a dryer too😂😂. Also, I read somewhere that since Nani and Lilo's parents died in a storm and Lilo thinks Pudge (the fish) controls the weather, Lilo brings him a sandwich every week as like some kind of offering/appeasement. Also that Nani was a champion surfer before their parents passed (there's a bunch of awards and medals in the background).

Watcher from Hawaii here! I hope you get a chance to visit! Some facts and clarification for you: 1. Lilo means “lost or separated” in Hawaiian, so essentially the movie can be interpreted as lost and put back together as the name “stitch” is a perfect counterpart for Lilo. 2. Yes, we call it shave ice in Hawaii. 3. In Hawaii, the work dress isn’t as formal as other parts of the United States. We definitely embrace more of a casual look even in other higher job positions. 4. Someone else has already mentioned why Lilo is adamant about feeding Pudge the fish.

I really like the conflict between Nani and Cobra Bubbles here because you can tell both want what's best for Lilo & both are right to some extent- Nani's right that Lilo's behavioral issues and psychological needs aren't likely to be met in a positive way in foster care but Cobra Bubbles is right that Nani was struggling with not being able to properly supervise (leaving her alone multiple times, once with food cooking on an open flame on the stove) or control Lilo (and later Stitch, especially their more violent and destructive behavior)

About Pudge the Fish: Like most children her age, Lilo has a vivid imagination. As Polynesian culture includes many Loa, spirits who control natural events, Lilo concluded that Pudge controlled the weather. As their parents died in a car crash due to weather, Lilo 'appeases' Pudge by bridging him a peanut butter sandwich every week because she is determined to keep Nani safe. This seemingly-insignificant little detail throws new light onto everything Lilo has done in the movie - from taking photos of chunky beach-goers to feeding Pudge to her obsession with Elvis, she is absolutely relentless in doing anything and everything she can to protect Nani.

I love this movie so much, and now thinking back, it's funny that I was six years old when the movie came out, the same age as Lilo! I've always loved the series and the movies that came with it, and even though I don't surf, unless bodysurfing counts lol, that giant surfboard is actually a longboard, my guess for more people to ride on. Lilo also believes Pudge controls the weather because the one time she missed sandwich day, was the same day she lost her parents. So this just seems like a fact when your six. Two more things, then I'm done. When you first watch the movie, you probably don't notice, but Gantu, the alien that captures Stitch and Lilo, is in the background for about five seconds before firing his weapon. Since Stitch and Lilo are arguing, Stitch is too busy to notice him, unlike with Jumba and Pleklei. Second thing, instead of a spaceship, they where going to have Stitch hijack a plane, and the deleted scene is really cool, but then they changed it to the spaceship because of 9/11. I understand the reasoning, but you should check out the deleted scene sometime, it's really cool.

"She just wants to make a friend. It's kinda hard when you biting people, though." ahahahah And yeah, shelters do charge you to adopt a dog, usually around $100. They fix the pet and give them all their shots is why. Even with the adoption fees the vast majority of shelters operate at a loss. If someone is ever looking for a charity to give to your local shelter can use it as well as any spare pet things like food or toys. I worked at a shelter in college and it was always on the brink of shutting down.

The amount of times I rewatched this movie as a kid is probably close to a million times 😂! I was 5 years old when this movie came out. I relate with Nani as an older sister and Lilo as a fellow weirdo (weird horse girl all thru junior high and high school). I love Winona Ryder's version of burning love! So the reason why Lilo says Pudge the fish controls the weather is that it's almost like a security blanket, her parents died in a car crash due to the rain and she believes if she feeds Pudge a sandwich he can keep the weather calm so she doesn't lose anybody else. I will now let you ponder this. Also, #binges there is a 2nd and 3rd movie. Stitch has a glitch is really good!
