The geisha scene from Ghost in the Shell is from the first episode of Stand Alone Complex. As a fans of GITS, I actually really liked it, but as Joey said, you kind of have to forget what you know about the original universe as a lot of things does not match. But I really enjoyed it as a sci-fi movie about memory and identity. On a similar theme, just watch Total Recall, you could make some interesting parallels.

Pretty much every scene in Ghost in the Shell: In Name Only is ripoff of a scene from one of the anime adaptations, which is the overlaying problem with the movie, it's just a frankenstein monster made from the best scenes from previous adaptations plus some unwelcome identity politics held together by a mediocre story that doesn't get ghost in the shell but rather uses story elements from other adaptations to emulate the ghost in the shell feel btw, I don't mind the whitewashing, but adding extra character that doesn't even feel like she has a place on the team just to have a black woman wasn't exactly a great choice

I thought Alita: Battle Angel was pretty solid. Not perfect, but still a pretty good, well-acted movie (if you can get over the “big-eyes” effect) that only felt a bit awkwardly paced in some areas due to the nature of trying to cover half of a 9-volume manga series in approximately 2 hours while keeping in elements such as Motorball.

A few fun facts that MAYBE clear things a bit up: James Cameron was not making fun of the original manga of Alita Battle Angel, he is a massive fan of the series. This is why he bought the rights to the series many years ago. Her eyes are so big because she is thy only cyborg with only the human brian left and everything else replaced, she is built with a completely different technology than the other cyborgs, and also there is less light on mars so she needs big eyes to see well there. In the flashbacks, you can see that all cyborgs from Mars had those eyes. It also makes her look more Alien because she is basically an alien. They ended the movie this way because it was the plan to make more movies, James Cameron already came up with the names for the sequels, but well Disney hasn't approved those yet. I don't get the Ghost in the Shell got ranked higher here, it has way more problems.
@thelink67562 жыл бұрын
Because it was honestly better lol. It just had a much more known source material that was held up to a much higher degree. NO ONE has read the alita manga and it annoys me to no end that people make crap up to excuse how bland the film is. If it was james Cameron using his visuals again to sucker most people in. It would have gotten so much more hate. Alita is overrated AF😂😂😂.

They never were as outrageously big in the manga/anime as in the live action movie. Also by that logic almost all live action movies should have characters with very big eyes, because most japanese manga artist draw the eyes a lot bigger in proportion. I am pretty sure I heard in an interview somewhere that Alita's eyes were made that big to make the Uncanny Valley effect. The point was that she doesn't look human so that makes you feel uneasy but you can either learn to look past that to see her personality or you get so caught up in it that all you see is a robot. Sort of like how people in her world would be looking at her. It's like a personality test of what you really would be like in a world were sentient robots existed,(or how hard a robot would need to act human before you actually start to see that they might be more than just a lot of metal) kinda.

The trye passion project he wanted to bring to life. I had no issue with the character. She's supposed to look abnormal. Not look like she completely fits in. It was sinply character accuracy as far as I saw it. And see it I did. Twice in IMAX 3D (Once solo and once with friends) and once more at a normal theatre screening with my family. It's interesting how you pointed out that the acting in Japanese films seems more theatrical whereas the acting in American films seems more subtle. I think its because American cinema intentionally diverged from more traditional theatrical performance styles while Asian cinema intentionally preserved the historical style of the theatre in its development. Everyone probably has their own preference for either one (which is totally valid) but its always cool to see the effects of two amazing styles :D Loved the video! Glad you did this tier list ^^

I will forever hold onto Alita as a shining example of what Live Actuon Anime can be. The character of Alita was supposed to be exaggerated, supposed to look like she doesn't fit in. Frankly, I hardly noticed the huge eyes the second and third times watching. The actress portraying her did absolutely amazing portraying the "born hot yesterday" robot girl out of water character to the effect the og did to "originate" the trope in the first place. The action was epic, the score incredible. Deserved so much more for what it accomplished and succered from having to be a potential one-shot adaptation which I hope to Anime Jesus isn't the case. James Cameron you can tell poured his heart and soul into this project along with the actors. Just so damn good.

As someone who hasn't read the manga for Alita: battle angle, I think the movie was really good. The asthetics were pretty good but the story progression and acting was also very good. Although Alita's eyes came as a surprise to me but idk it felt kinda natural after sometime. Also the cgi and direction was really good. I would give it an A

If there's any live action anime/manga adaptation that deserves to be ranked at S-Tier, then it is Oldboy and Ichi the Killer. Both were originally manga. I'm shocked you haven't seen either of those Joey.

Alita: Battle Angel is one of the best live action adaptations I've seen. I read and loved the manga before seeing the movie and it ended exactly where I though it would. And she isn't the only one with the big eyes. All of her people in the flashbacks looked similar. It should be so much higher on this list. A, tier for me.

Exactly! Also, weren’t her people supposed to be from Mars? That would explain why they don’t look entirely human. I don’t get why Joey didn’t put more thought into his decision of where the movie should be placed in the tier list. It is an incredible movie!
@sericsson19963 жыл бұрын
@@musicaluprising924 I believe Joey must've read the original manga and not the new stuff. I remember the Mars part and some other stuff are from the new manga continuation that's why it had a weird ending in the movie.

Blade of the immortal live action is probably my favorite live action out of this list, and I also agree on the Bleach live action. it wasn't bad (avid fan of Bleach) despite all the sub-par elements, it 100% felt that the twisting of the story to fit a movie story telling setting was executed good. I felt Alita was good from someone who’s read the manga and watched the oav. Ghost in the shell could have been good if they weren’t trying to cram in elements from the animated movie, and sac. It was trying to jam to much content into this movie making it a confusing mess. Visually it was pretty, and fyi the geisha’s were in the first season of stand alone complex.

Mr. Bizinger, wielder of the title of anime man, when you put 'Alita Battle Angel' in D tier I'mma have to respectfully disagree with that opinion. You gotta give the movie for artistic merit in that its visual imagery and use of CGI was incredible, and I think a major reason we might have a difference in opinion is because I wasn't bothered by the large eyes. I thought it was a cool decision (Alita's entire body had to be made with CGI due to the design choices they went with), and I had a blast watching it! I mean, surely it's got to be more than two tiers above Dragon Ball Evolution... right?
@sericsson19963 жыл бұрын

That's from the perspective of a person who consumed the manga. The movie is really good as a standalone, but if you're a fan of the manga and you try to compare them, of course you're going to see the movie as a C or B. It's the same with Ghost in the Shell.
