It is funny, most watchers at first treat Joy and Sadness like people and of course it’s understandable. They look like people, they act like people. But this is a giant metaphor. These are emotions and are therefore not conscious, nor responsible for their actions. They are a natural reactions to outer circumstances in our lives. This is about toxic positivity, about childhood depression, about repressing emotions, about maturing. But to package these particular psychological issues in this metaphorical, child-friendly way, and at the same time depict the brain in such a clever way, is an absolutely brilliant concept. I can also imagine that a work like this gives children in particular an extremely helpful tool to explain and describe their own emotions and reactions to certain things.

14:30 if you watch the scene again, it was not because of sadness. Sadness was doing her job. It was joy meddling in things and refusing to give sadness a place that messed it up.

I never think of it as "death" because its not. He is just forgotten. Many people recall them later on in life. Those are those moments of "OMG! I forgot about that till now." So someday in another memory when Rielly is old, she will remember Bing Bong and he will come back.

When you realize all of this happened because Joy was being an overbearing dictator. We need ALL of our emotions. Joy wasn't allowing Riley to work through them as we're meant to. She was suppressing all of them, most especially Sadness. Repressing emotions is what leads to this kind of chaos. Joy even stopped Riley from working through it all in her dreams as she's meant to by replacing the dream with a happy memory. Mom didn't help when she asked Riley to keep being happy for her dad's sake. That had to have made Riley feel as though she wasn't allowed to be sad and so couldn't talk to them about it either. I'm sure mom meant well but that also caused some of this damage. That was a lot of pressure to put on a child. We NEED sadness, anger and all the rest. It's how we cope with the world. We have to work our way through the more negative emotions to find our way to happiness again. Edit: Just found your channel. Loved the reaction and subscribing! 🥰

Tbf, it was Riley herself who was repressing sadness. Riley had a good and stabil childhood. The emotion Joy just grew the strongest. Riley never had to deal with major life changing moments before, moving can be very traumatic. She is trying to keep happy, because that is the emotion she knows best. Most people tend to repress sadness ("put on a happy face", "swallow your tears"). She had to learn to allow sadness and her other emotions to be there and to expres them to deal with the moving, leaving all her friends and all she known. When we grow up, sooner or later we will face loss, grief, unfairness, change, failing... etc. Children don't know how to regulate and deal with their emotions yet. Hey..., even adults often can't. But the emotions are Riley/Riley is her emotions.

@@cmo6055 Yes...I was speaking in the context of the movie too, though. The characters are all PART of Riley. They're her emotions so I thought it was pretty clear that she was doing it to herself. But again, Mom didn't help when she asked Riley to keep smiling for her father either.

To be fair, her mom was saying that if BOTH she and Riley could keep smiling, it'd really help Dad out. She wasn't putting all the responsibility on Riley.

@@johnpooky84 I mean yes looking at it as an adult it would seem that way. But a child isn't going to feel that way. Her saying "both" doesn't make a literal child feel any less pressure to be happy and smiling even if she's not. It was still a poor move on mom's part. I'm sure mom meant well. I'm sure she didn't think about the effect her words would have. but her meaning well and not realizing doesn't make the pressure Riley was feeling any less than it was.

i LOVE this movie so much because it truly shows real depression. happiness goes away and ppl tell u to stop being so sad. its the lack of joy and sadness, your left with anger and fear until your numb. tears everytime. thanks for this great reaction video!

Yeah. I understand that some people might think that depression is just being really really sad, but I think that sometimes it's so severe that the person is unable to feel anything. Even sadness. That's an important distinction!

As a 90’s kid, it’s really hard for me to say anything tops Toy Story, but I honestly have to say, the pair go Inside Out and Inside Out 2 are ABSOLUTELY my favorite Disney or Pixar movies ever made. They are both phenomenal. And i won’t get into a debate about which is better because they are a set and each one compliments the other perfectly, but I completely believe everyone that worked on these movies was at their absolute peak here.

One of my good friends has a very mature little six year old. Last year she went as Sadness for Halloween because of how important Sadness is. She got to have color rinsed blue hair for a week or so. She was so precious. Thanks for reacting to this. I know it is hard sometimes not just time and editing wise and all but you can be very vulnerable here. Thanks for taking the risks and letting us experience the film again with you. You are awesome and it was a great reaction.

The cost of living difference is accurate. You can get a bigger place in Minnesota than you can in San Francisco, California, for the same amount of money. I lived in San Francisco for 10 years and I love that city, but I couldn’t afford a safe place bigger than a shoe box there now. Riley’s plan to go back to Minnesota alone? That’s about 1,974 miles, about 3,160 kilometers, passing through 4 additional states, crossing into a different time zone and a different climate zone.

Inside Out is sooo good and not to mention a fantastic therapy tool. Kinda nervous about the 2nd one just because alot of the movies recently are desperate cash grabs trying to remain relevant but I have heard good things about it too so there is hope lol. Idk how they're gonna rip my heart out in the second one but if we have something akin to Bing Bong Electric Boogaloo 2 I'm not gonna survive because that scene will never not make me ugly cry. Nooo, the second film is actually GOOD!!! I was hesitant at first because of Pixar’s reputation but I’m just glad that the creators of inside out put a lot of thought into it. Riley has more character in it, and it breaks my heart everytime i see her face. Feel bad for her, she’s so me

Inside Out is one of my favorite Pixar movies for sure :) The second one is great, too! I think this one is still my favorite of the two of them so far, but the second one is also very well done :) One little note, I really enjoy your reactions, however personally I've been finding the moments where you quiet the movies to speak, but then add in other music in the background a bit distracting? I find it hard to focus on what you're saying with the other music in the background, and personally feel like it may help to just quiet the audio without the additional music? Of course they're your videos, so edit them however you'd prefer, just wanted to give some constructive feedback :) I hope your week is going well!

My 2 year old nephew is called Riley (and like this Riley he’s a goofball and wants to fly a rocket to the moon) and it makes some scenes from this movie such as the opening birth scene hit me in the feels even more.
