You also could argue that the movie is non canon from the show because the pirates were shown watching the SpongeBob movie within the actual movie. Also many people been claiming Stephen Hillenburg confirmed that season 4 and beyond take place before the events of the movie but there’s no evidence he ever said that, no interviews or articles of him mentioning any of that beside him wanting the movie to be the ending. It’s just a rumor that around for a while.

It keeps the charm of the SpongeBob series while also being a good standalone movie with a really good message of how adults should still be treated as adults, even if they enjoy things that kids like. The animation is also an upgrade from the show, the humor is golden, and the soundtrack is amazing.
