The moment that really stuck out to me was when Hope Cervantes (Tosha) revealed that she went through SA as a child and Barney was the one thing that brought joy to her childhood.

Yes, that was definitely one of those memorable parts of the documentary. Pia Hamilton (Min) stood out for me as well; you can see just how much being in the show meant to her, especially since she was able to embrace her Filipino heritage through her character.

It seems that Hope is in a happier place mentally. But man does it hit different seeing her on the show now. It makes me wonder if she is acting or is really happy because she’s away from her pain. It’s really sad.

After watching the documentary, I have such a great respect for the Barney actors, cast, and crew. Especially the kids. The kids were kinda the relatable connection for us the viewers when were all kids ourselves. And to know at least four of the former kids had tough lives just because they wanted to help spread positivity, is actually kind of heartbreaking.

Yeah. Especially knowing how tough the world has always been. Like you said, all they wanted to do was spread some positivity and they were hurt for it.

This has gotta be the darkest Barney special I’ve ever seen. All those Barney haters can go to hell. Seriously. It’s one thing not to like a certain franchise. But it’s another thing to start a hate campaign against it. Imagine being that hateful towards a kid’s show. Smh. Also, I sincerely hope Sheryl Leach's son, Patrick is in a better place, mentally. And I hope Sheryl herself has fully healed from it.
@jeremyriley1238

Not everyone who did it was on a hate campaign. Site that did this made it clear they were not doing this to incite violence and is just done for comedic purposes. It's the people who took it too far and commited violent crimes against people dressed as Barney or fans of the purple dinosaur who deserve to go there.' IMHO, the special was informative, but sadly, it's very far from perfect, as my issue with it is the topic seems to be random (one segment focuses on the Jerry Springer controversy, which while taking about the 1990's pushing the limit, did not even mention Barney until the very end, does not go on to tell the truth that most of the anti-Barney sites are for comedic purposes, and near the end, it focuses a segment about Sheryl's son's arrest, which again, does not have anything to do with Barney other than it involves the son of the woman who created the character. The only good point made in the interviews was Steve Burns saying the reason Barney was targeted was because, when compared to Sesame Street's cast of Muppet characters, he is not broken, as he is always happy when the likes of Grover, Bert, Big Bird, and Elmo actually have more than one feeling that makes them closer and relatable to humans. Overall, this is nothing but a jumbled mess that is one-sided and does no research at all.

Not gonna lie, when Steve Burns turned to look directly into the camera, I about started crying right there because I knew he was about to impart a very important message, like he did back in 2020 when he told the internet all the things that he taught us in “Blue’s Clues.” His part in this documentary was so valuable!

Overall, I enjoyed the documentary. I thought it was really dope seeing the former cast members being interviewed. I got pretty emotional when they talk about their lives after Barney and how they struggled trying to fit in society and falling into bad habits. It just a reminder that all of us go through real life situations but I’m glad that they were able to overcome it. Steve Burns’s message at the end is soooo powerful. When he looked at the camera, I thought Blue was going to jump out of nowhere lol.

It's odd not seeing Sandy Duncan in the origin story this time. I mean I know they probably couldn't use her likeness, but as someone who's heard the story a million times, it's strange seeing an important figure to early Barney not even get a nod.

I showed the first part of the documentary to my parents today, because I really wanted to watch it again. When it said “In 1988, Sheryl Leach created a monster.”, my dad said “Did she really?”, and I couldn’t say anything. What those haters did was AWFUL and WRONG, and the cast and crew didn’t deserve to be hated on like that.

I just finished watching the documentary and, man, it was a time! First of all, Steve almost had me bawling at the end! I grew up with Blue's Clues along with Barney so his insight was very cool to hear. Second, the whole documentary gave me a better understanding of where the Barney hate could come from: peer pressure, lack of relatability, unrealistic character traits, jealousy, and even the culture of the world outside of the show. But what I appreciate about Barney and other shows like it is the desire to create a bright spot in a dark world. It gives kids and even us older fans a safe space to escape and also be inspired to bring good into the world.

Loved the documentary for the bts footage and for the interviews with the cast & crew (and with Steve Burns, who was the best interviewee in the entire thing - the ending of the second part was the most powerful, touching moment ever). And I love the idea of exploring the Barney backlash while also being a social commentary on hate culture. I do feel like they could have focused more on that stuff as opposed to Sheryl Leach's family life. I think I know what they were *trying* to do with that, but it didn't really seem to pay off all that well, and just became unnecessary. But for what the documentary is, it's fine.

Man, Steve Burns really got to me asking who my Barney was growing up. As much as I loved Barney, I grew up more with Thomas the Tank Engine. Seeing what would eventually happen to him, especially from a corporate standpoint, really made me feel hurt inside because of ruining a great legacy that was meant for anyone to enjoy turning into a greedy company wanting to make a profit because of his name. It’s why I still and will always prefer the classic Thomas today as he’s still considered to be my “Barney” today. Off topic, love that Miku plushie you got in the background!

One thing I liked was the use of "I Love You, You Love Me" to start the documentary. As many of you know, originally, I Love You Love Me was sung at the beginning when Barney first comes to life instead of the end, to say goodbye. And I felt like they brought the documentary to life by doing that. A nice little homage 😌

Steve Burns asking the audience who was their Barney toward the end of the documentary , It made me think of my childhood and think of several shows besides Barney, Lampchop, Mr Rogers, Teletubbies, Sesame Street, Dragontales, Arthur, Zoboomafoo, Between the Lions and a few shows from the 70’s that were live action with actors in puppet costumes New Zoo Revue, Sid and Marty Krofft’s, I think these shows all are my Barney’s because they helped shaped my love for puppets and get into a hobby of making puppets I found it interesting that Carey Stimson’s interviews were cut from the final documentary, I wish they had kept it and we could hear what he had to say Patrick moved to Malibu I’m not sure if Sheryl lived with him at that time, prior to that they lived in a Caribbean island and ran a restaurant Edit/Update, I didn’t realize that the original first writer was also interviewed and his interview was cut short, I think that is a shame, I hope they release the footage that was cut from the documentary I Love You You Hate Me, from the first writer and Carey Stimson

This documentary drove home a very powerful message and as a whole, while they threw caveats for us here and there, it didn't feel targeted towards the people that loved Barney and understood his message but to those that essentially drove him away. It was certainly interesting to see a few of those people who were driving the moving train of Barney hate kind of have a buyer's remorse on it if you will, especially learning about the trials and tribulations the people involved with it had to go through, which I also feel was a large reason for the emphasis on the Leach Family's story post Barney. I too, didn't agree with the way they introduced David, but they cleaned it up really nicely. Also one aspect I'm surprised they didn't touch on and felt it could've produced a 3rd part was the hate he received from other children's programing, specifically Sesame Street. All in all, I'm grateful for the aspect this documentary took as it shed light on something so positive that was driven away by those who didn't understand him, and in a way, how much his presence is sorely missed amongst the youth of today's world.

In the documentary when they talked about the creator Sheryl and her son Patrick and what became of them, it somehow frightfully brought some truth to that opening statement about Sheryl creating a monster. You see Barney was solely created because of Sheryl's son. Even though the son had no involvement in the show, I think some of the kid actors knew him in person. They probably even saw him as a friend or maybe even like a sibling. I think one of the girl actress "Luci" knew Patrick in real life and the body performer and voice for Barney. All of them were heartbroken to hear the news. In a metaphorical sense, Barney was Patrick. I know it's supposed to be Barney being a fictional sibling to Patrick, but to me I viewed Patrick and Barney as one entity. Barney was supposed to represent every positive thing that Patrick should look up to and instead he chose to commit an act of evil. I know that to Sheryl this would most definitely break her and after that incident, it would probably make her end up doubting her own fictional creation and what that stood for.

@@atavious2491 I know what you’re trying to say, but equating Barney (who was created for someone) to the kid that grew up to commit a heinous crime himself is a bit much even as a metaphor I don’t think the “Sheryl Leach created a monster” should be interpreted that literally, but rather that’s what the public saw him as with no basis as to why

I just finished watching the documentary and there were a lot of times where I just felt like crying. Seeing what the production crew had to go through, what the child actors had to go through, and tragically what became of the creators of Barney. It's horrifying to know that a lot of negativity was going on behind the scenes of a live action show with child actors in it. As a kid you don't see this, but as you grow older you somehow get the TRUE story of went on behind those childhood experiences. It really paints a disgusting picture that we as a species don't care about the young and innocent. It's almost like we treat our own newborn offsprings like faeces or we "eat" them like food. Why do some adults like doing this to children? Why do people like to completely destroy innocent things? It makes no sense!

One of the most memorable parts of the documentary was when they interviewed a sports team mascot who got sued for using a Barney lookalike at a sporting event. No, not the guy who was in the mascot costume, the actual mascot itself. And that was hilarious. Long story short, he got off Scott free because the judges saw it as fair use. The guy didn't even hate the show, he just thought it was harmless. But it was nonetheless a very easy target.

I grew up enjoying Barney and Thomas the Tank Engine. Thomas gets some hate today and some memes here and there, the hate was nothing compared to Barney. I feel like this is in part due to Ringo Starr and George Carlin being connected to the show and it being more grounded. Growing up I had to act like I hated Barney or never watched it. Anyone that didn't would be teased or bullied non-stop. That's the one part of the 90s early 2000s I do not miss, the edgy phase was so extra. Glad I found your channel. There were several things I loved about the documentary: 1. The behind scenes footage 2. I loved the personal stories of from some of cast about what happened to them after leaving the show. Which is something that I thought was a interesting question in of itself because what does happened to former child actors after they leave something iconic? I also loved the story about the father who founded the secret barney hate society and how that helped him with his own problem. 3. Steven white saying (and correct me if I'm wrong) why he wrote for the show for as long as he did. 4. Steve Burns. As for the things about the documentary that I personally thought where okay I think you hit the nail on the head with that. After the documentary was over I sat and thought about the question Burns had asked; and thought about who was the barney ( or barnies, in my case) in my life? Aside from barney himself. Several came to mind of course. As opposed to how I would feel about someone hating them I would feel sad. After thinking about that question I then listen to the song Northern Sky by Nick Drake from 2019 Mister Roger's movie its a beautiful day in the neighborhood. If there's one thing characters like barney did help me with despite being 3 or 4 years old at the time, is deal with my parents divorce. The lesson in that being something good might come out of it. In which several good things did: If my parents never got divorced I probably never would have loved going to the library which would lead me to my love of movies; and working on my minor in film and media studies. If my parents never got divorced I never would have met my step nephew or ever visit Nebraska in 2010 to visit my stepmom's family. If my parents never got divorced I would not last year have sat in the back of my dad's car with my five year old niece (in the best simplest way one can explain it to a five year old) and saying I know what its like to have be shared by parents who are no longer together but love you. That's just one of the impacts left on my life characters like barney have left on my life. Apologies if I rambled a little too long on this.

I only recently found your channel a week before the documentary and I have completely gone through all your videos. I really dig them. I'm more of a Thomas the Tank Engine person but Barney was certainly there. I eventually stopped watching but you made me look back at some of his stuff. As for the documentary, it felt like the Patrick situation derailed what I was the most interested in, that being the idea of finding something to irrationally hate. That and some things felt a little inflammatory like a snippet of a RE 8 mod that's clearly a joke. Besides that, I really dug the stuff that touched on the subject of hate and Steve Burns at the end.

To be honest, I haven't watched the documentary yet. Been busy all day today. I will get around to it at some point. I still wanted to watch this cuz I wanted to hear your opinion about it anyways!😁🖒 Btw I didn't know you played Splatoon, that's cool! I have the first one, but it's still fun today!

Thank you, that was a very well done review/recap. I have a question: I was the original head writer for Barney, but I haven't seen this show yet (I'll have to subscribe to Peacock and find time to watch it.) They interviewed me for about an hour, but I get the impression, both from print reviews that all quote only one thing I said (the Bruce Willis story) and from this video that never mentions me at all, that virtually everything I told them was cut out. Is that correct? The reviews all just say that I was "fired early on." In fact, I wrote the scripts with Kathy Parker right up to the second-to-last draft (our scripts were the ones Sandy Duncan read and liked enough to sign on) and didn't leave until all three shows were shot and awaiting editing. The main reason I finally agreed to talk was to correct a long-standing false impression about why Barney comes to life from imagination, but I get the feeling they didn't even include that. Is it in the show?

Firstly thank you so much for stopping by and for your contribution to the franchise!!! From what I remember, the Bruce Willis idea for Barney was entirely there, I don’t remember the mentioning of writing with Kathy , nor was Sandy Duncan brought up at all throughout the docuseries’s entirety now that I think about it. I had no idea, I’ll have to watch again but as far as my memory goes it wasn’t there 😮

@@HedgeOnStage Thanks, that's what I suspected. But don't go out of your way for me. I need to watch it myself. I'm just swamped with writing work at the moment.

I watched it. A few things stood out to me. First, I thought it was interesting that they chose Andrew to host the documentary. And second, it wasn't a documentary about Barney. It was a documentary about Sheryl, and the Barney haters, and then they shoehorned Patrick in. And that's why I honestly hated it. Because it had so little to do with Barney. You could replace Barney with any character, Dora, Big Bird, Elmo, Blue, Mister Rogers, Caillou, etc, and you would have the exact same documentary. Because Barney is not the only character to ever receive hate. Far from it. This had very little, if anything, to do with Barney. To me, the best part of the documentary was Steve from Blues Clues. He is a really genuine, good guy. If you want to watch a documentary about a children's show, that's actually good, I would suggest, _Won't You Be My Neighbor._ That movie is actually good. Or even _A Dinosaur Sensation_ here on youtube. But the person who made it, never uploaded part 2. But the first part is really good.

I don’t remember Big Bird or Mr Rogers getting hate, maybe some people didn’t like these characters, but I think the difference between Barney hate vs Mr Rogers or Big Bird, while Mr Rogers and Sesame Street were preschool shows, they didn’t sugarcoat feelings and act happy all the time, Mr. Rogers had a episode many years ago that talked about assassination, There was an episode in Sesame Street that talked about death, and the documentary discusses about how Barney was just too happy all the time and that turned many adults off, it didn’t educate kids on serious topics, it was a preschool show of kids playing with a purple dinosaur

Barney didn't have the fancy house or perfect material items. My family was very poor at the time and my parents were having allot of problems he got me through alot by showing something that was not there for me in the real world anytime we were around a tv barney was the first thing I'd watch because he was rare to me on a channel i could only see at my friends house because we never had a tv Barney let many kids leave the real world behind for a minute and know that love and friendship actually existed.
